At some point they will get rootbound. At some point you'll have to learn how to trim roots.
People keep 'mother' plants for years.
If it is a matter of keeping a plant for later use, you can also take clones before it gets rootbound and regenerate the plant, toss out the soon-to-be rootbound one etc. I used to keep mother plants in 1-gallon pots. Every 4-6 months i'd clone them if not taking cuttings for a crop. It's a pita, but with limited space it was necessary. Inbetween regenerating them i'd prune them back to a few growth tips too. Just have to time that sort of stuff with intended use.
