Hello everyone!
This is the first grow in coconut substrate (Coco Kaya by BioBizz). I've noticed that the pH values seem to be lower than in normal perlite/soil mix. Is that normal? What pH value should ideally be reached when growing in coconut?

Hi, the pH value should be between 5.5 and 6.5 in coconut substrate, with 5.5 being the target during the growth phase and gradually moving towards 6.5 as the plant ages and transitions into flowering. However, if it’s a bit below 5.5 at the beginning, it’s not that bad, just make sure it doesn’t drop below 5.2. I used to grow in coconut substrate for a while, but it’s not really my thing. I prefer regular soil. What’s important with coconut is that you always give it nutrients since it’s very likely sterile. Good luck!

Soilless/hydro is slightly lower. I like to shoot for ~6 just so there is a little leeway above and below. Some swear by 5.5-5.8 - probably needs a little extra Ca at 5.5 vs 6.0, so it can impact your overall concentrations and ratios that you eventually settle on.
Good soilless/hydro nutes will be ph balanced and buffered. Shouldn't need to do anything, but if you do, not too big of a deal either. Above all, be religious about the minimum 10% runoff. it's what maintains the balance in the rootzone and prevents buildup. The equilibrium that results in the medium will not exactly match your formula, but the consistency is the key. From there, any issue related to nutrients is fixed with a formula adjustmnet.
