How to defoil while stuck in scrog?

GolliGrows
GolliGrowsstarted grow question 21d ago
I’m stuck in a scrog and can’t properly defoliate. I can’t take the plants out of the tent and can’t reach the back or lower areas. I’d really like to defoliate for airflow and humidity, but I have no idea how to reach them. Any tips?

Better planning next time? Don't set something up you can't reach everywhere. You can cut your scrog or find a way to crawl in there, lol. Looks like a 3x3? that tent should open up on 3 sides.. should be able to get in there one way or another. Also, You can easily avoid the need to defoliate. That is some bro science stuff unless it's congested and creating a pathogen risk, in which case it may be necessary for a specific context, but that can be avoided by not over-crowding the canopy in the first place (goes back to planning ahead). You'll find that fewer colas per sq ft (aerial density) will result in the same yield as long as there are 'enough' colas. Yield is more strongly correlated to leaf surface area and DLI. 2-4 cols/sq ft is all you need to maximize a yield. More only creates unproductive work and effort. if it's a pheno with smaller bud sizes, then ~4 is a better target. I did 2 colas per sq ft last year, but i want slightly smaller buds than what i got last year to better avoid pathogen risks, so i'm trying ~3/sq ft this year (closer to 2.7), while still remaining easy to trim and not over-crowding canopy. I think ~3 will be the happy zone for me, but your mileage may vary. Local variables have their say. Save the hassle of a need to defoliate altogether. I sometimes remove some leaves at bottom to avoid trapping excess moisture from medium, but taking off a shit-ton of leaves is never a good idea and any need to do so can be completely avoided. A ton of benefits come from not over-crowding a canopy, and you still maintain potential yield. Save yourself hours of time and hassle dealing with overgrowth. Makes training decisions for you too... there's and end goal to target and therefore you can make an effective plant to maximize avoiding pruning off wasted growth -- useless growth = wasted time and money. Some useless growth is unavoidable but minimizing it is a benefit.

It can be a bitch, just do your best. I do a single plant scrog per 4x4 usually. But those plants get so big I can crawl in there and sit "Criss cross applesauce" with my spine not bent and its not too bad. I purposefully left about a 1 foot gap on the backside of my tent to the wall so If I have to I can climb back there and get the backside easier. to get the front get a small step ladder to reach in farther, being carful not to fall onto your plants obviously. Easier said than done, I've done it. if you start from the bottom up then start attacking from the top again it makes it easier to see what's goin on and less intimidating to clean up. I had to go in my tent and defoliate my 4 plants a few days after getting my wisdom teeth pulled out. that wasent fun but i got it done. you can do it man!

Yep, the one and only reason I don't like using scrog. Pain in the ass to access plants when you need to. What if that one at the back had some mould or pest issue-you'd never know and you find it when it's too late

Damn dude, you described the only reason I don't do scrog anymore lol, like the rest have said, get on your back and make yourself small and crawl in, getting dirty won't kill ya lol.

Don't feel bad. Im stuck in week 7 in a 4by6 closet. And can't get to the back 5 plants. I didn't mean for them to grow all together but over night they did and they needed to be defoliate im new to coco coir and autos good luck they said cocc would increase my yield by 20%to 30% well more doubled to tripled my plant size from dirt. As far as yield im just now finishing up my first grow with cocc.

Get on your back and work upside down or use long tools. Most tents open up around the sides, or at least mine does. it can open up 75% of the way. only one panel is locked in place. Other option is just add a fan into the under canopy and push that air around.

Sometimes the tent opens on the other side also or around 2 sides abling you to reach in in this situation.
