I used Crop King's method for germination. It is May 25 and one of the seeds still has not sprouted properly. The healthy seed is now in a 2 liter pot as I have read that Auto plants do not enjoy being repotted. My intentions are to transplant only once and that will be to an outdoor grow area. Not sure if the slow seed will produce a healthy tap root. Just a little white spot on seed thus far.
Sprout only became taller no true leaves. I submerged it deeper into the soil. The second seed sprout has not come out of the soil. I am going to start 2 more seeds.
Of my 5 seed package from Crop King only 3 have sprouted. I still have a unsprouted seed in wet paper towel but it has been 2 weeks and all it has done is swell up enough to crack open the seed shell.
The 1 plant from the first 2 seeds I tried to sprout has not grown in height this week. It has the beginnings of the third set of leaves appearing.
The next plant is now 2 inches and has second set of true leaves showing.
The most recent sprout only has its seed leaves above a 1 inch stem.
No nutrients given yet, as the Miracle Grow had some included. Learned that lesson on a previous grow. I did not think it would take this long to get these Autoflowers to get growing. That last seed did not sprout, so I threw it out. That means only 3 of my 5 seeds grew. As you can see from the photos the smaller ones are a week and 2 weeks younger than the largest, due to germination issues.
I have been putting the plants in a sunny window or out on deck for a few hours of real sunshine to toughen up before being transplanted outdoors. No nutrientes just water provided. I noted that the cat tasted a couple of leaves, have to protect plants from that predator.
The oldest plant is now 9 inches tall. I wanted to put the plants outside this past week, but the weather has been terrible. For the past 5 days it has rained with wind. Temperatures have gone down from 27C to 18C day time temperatures. Night time down to 8C one night. Averaging about 10C for the past week. It has been so cloudy a that it was no point to placing the plants in window for real sunlight. Plants stayed under the LEDs. I wish I had the power to send some of this rain to western Canada where they are having a deadly heat wave.
I topped the oldest plant to see how it would react. Two days later I could see that it has created new small leaves at some of the leaf junctions. New bud sights?
I have read that it is NOT recommended to top Auto-flowering plants. Naturally I read that info the day after I topped two of my 4 autoflowers. That same source highly recommended Low Stress Training. The plants responded well to training and the lower branches developed a lot in the 5 days they have been outdoors. As I knew in advance about the wind and rain storm, I had the plants well protected. I was surprised at how much the 3 plants grew over the past 4 days.
The 3 plants received nutrients in 10 liters of water this week. I noticed some yellow on older leaves so I am happy I have been giving nutrients. The plants were started 1 week apart so there is a big difference from the oldest to the youngest. They have some bug damage. Plant 1 and 2 have begun to flower.
A lot of heavy rain this past week, so I could only water with nutrients 2 days this week. The plants grew well. The three of them, each started a week apart vary in height from 14, 17 to 20 inches. I have been tying down branches to allow light to reach the lower bud sights.
Another week with lots of rain. This week also provided cooler temperatures, especially at night with last night being at only 10 degrees C. The youngest plant not flowering yet. I decided it would be a good time to include some Cal-Mag in the water with the 3 part Advanced Nutrients. Only able to water twice this week due to lack of sunny days. As I had a PH level of 7 in the garden soil, I decided to give PH Down a try this year. My well water has a natural PH level at 7 and the PH Perfect does not lower the soil PH. I wanted to try getting the PH to the ideal of 6.5 for my plants. Very disappointed that I could not find any instructions on the bottle or on the Root Farm website. The bottle text just has "The amount of pH adjuster needed will vary depending on the volume of the nutrient solution, its strength, and the purity of water you are using." I had to guess and hope for the best. I tried 5 ml in 4 liters of water. It worked. I tested the soil after watering yesterday and one plant site was 6.5 and the other 6.6. I tied side branches down more, leaving just one branch growing upward in each of the 3 plants. Plant heights are 20, 17 and 14 inches respective of age.
Another rainy week. Watered on 2 different days with a total of 14 liter nutrient solution this week. Before watering I tested soil PH under this plant and got a reading of PH 7. After watering with 7 liters that contained 5 ml of PH down and waiting a few minutes, I got a reading of 6.3. Before watering the PH of the soil under the plants was 7. Today's watering with a 7 liter container which had 5 ml of PH down the plants came up varying amounts of PH levels. Plant 1 (the oldest) had PH 6.6; Plant 2 had PH 6.1 and Plant 3 PH 6.2. It would seem that my soil has an inclination to revert to a PH of 7.
It was a week of sunshine and higher than normal temperatures. The good news is I was able to give plants an extra watering with nutrients. The soil had its first chance to dry out in several weeks. Buds on plants continue to become larger. I picked of a few of the larger leaves.
Mold!!!! Yes there has been very high humidity most days. Some rain this week. Increased the amount of nutrients within the water I applied.
What am I going to do about that mold? Picked of the infected bud for now.
I have a new toy, it is a Wi-Fi Digital Microscope. I read a GrowDiaries article for recommended types. Ordered the Skybasic 50X to 1000X WiFi Handheld Zoom Magnification Endoscope Camera Magnifier 1080P FHD 2.0 MP 8 LED Compatible with Android from Amazon.ca on Monday and found the package on my deck Wednesday morning. Now that is fast delivery. It was play time and my first photo is above. Showed photo to my daughter and now my son-in-law wants one also. So much for my plan to get it for him as a Christmas present.
The fight against mold in the two older plants continues. First some desperation caused me to try drying the plants with my hair dryer. Apparently I need a hair dryer with a cold setting. I just had warm and hot, which caused me to heat the leaves too much. I had tried to hold my hand in the flow of air to keep me holding the hair dryer at a distance. Still a couple of days later I see leaves turning brown. Rats, I am being my normal self and learning things the hard way. The hair dryer had been put away. The good news was lack of rain. You may have noticed that I put a barrier between the plants and the ground. That seemed to help. I put windows over and sometimes around the plants to protect from the heavy morning dew we have been receiving because of the very high humidity this past week. That helped as well. I have been picking of some buds that looked infected and brought them into house to dry. They have not smelled of mold. I took some photos of buds from plant 1 and 2 with microscope.
I provided no nutrients this week. It has rained so much that it was very difficult to keep plants dry. More mold issues for me to deal with and I picked a few buds that looked damaged. I brought them into house to dry. Today is the 5th day of rain in a row. As I now have amber trichomes I intent on harvesting Plants 1 and 2 this coming week.
All 3 plants harvested this week because of the mold problem. I only measured the wet weight on Plant 3. I saved as much of the sugar leaves as I could to be used for edibles. Naturally I threw away the moldy bits in the garbage. All of the buds and leaves are now drying. Weight of day buds from the Plant 3 which has the least amount of bud rot was 67 grams.
