Welcome to Growing with Grizzle! I've been a Cannabis user and advocate for many years, but this is my first official grow. A few years back, I grew a skimpy photoperiod outdoors, and had no clue what I was doing. She wasn't really cared for, nor dried and cured properly. Now, July 2021, as we celebrate our nation's independence, my home state is also celebrating independence, as the recreational use and cultivation of Cannabis has been legalized!
With that being said, things are different this time. In addition to the desire to produce our own medicine, I feel I have the knowledge and tools to succeed. In addition to the medicine produced, I feel this journey is also going to bring me patience and great joy. Stick around!
I like being different. I hope to disprove some common misconceptions around growing cannabis, even for first time growers:
- I'll be growing autoflowers as a first timer
- I'll be transplanting said autoflowers
- I'll be using soil that is "too hot"
- they will be trained, both HST and LST
Now, for the grow:
6/24 - Used paper towel method to pop the seeds.
6/26 - 1/4" tap roots! Right into Fox Farms Ocean Forest, amended with additional perlite, in solo "instant transplant" cups.
6/27 - fully emerged a little over 24 hours. Started under an underperforming light..still need for indoors.
6/28 lid removed from cups
6/30 moved outdoors 100%
Pics added for end of Germination week!
Steady growth. Instantransplant solo cup time!
Veg Week 1 stats:
Avg high: 86.8
Avg low: 67.4
Avg RH: 64.7
We transitioned to the 5gal Vivosun fabric pots in the same FFOF soil. Moved at end of veg week 1, so about 12 days or so. Light water after the transplant, no signs of stress so far. After a day and a half, gave a hefty watering to both.
Welcome to week 2! The Critical Auto has maintained the lead in growth (3.5"t x 3"w) compared to the Green Crack Auto (2 3/8"t x 2 1/8"w). Exciting to watch them grow.
They remain outdoors 24/7.
Day 13: all is well with the #criticalauto after moving to 5gal fabric bags. Soil remains FF Ocean Forest. Ran out of soil, need a bit more to complete the move for the #GreenCrack. The other was moved first as she was the most leggy.
Really pleased with the #FastBuds #genetics so far. Stay tuned!
Update 7/12: With germination week being 6/27 to 7/3, we are officially into Veg week 2 here. Will start week 3 on 18th...Now that I got my timeline straight, heres an update! Both autos have been transplanted to 5g fabric pots, no signs of shock!!
Let both get accustomed to their new homes but kept them in full sun. Gave both a good soaking today.
Made it to 3rd week of veg!
24 days old today (7/21)
Green Crack has been tied down to start the LST.
Critical is showing signs of pre-flower and was taller at 12". Will be started LST on her this evening.
All is well. Watering based on weight and feel.
Slight introduction to Fox Farm's Big Bloom.
Week 3 weather stats:
90 F max temp
71 F min temp
77 F avg temp
61% avg humidity
93 max RH
32 min RH
Made it to week 4!
Day 28
LST training is going well for both, even though the Critical Auto has signs of pre-flower.
Both plants are looking great with no signs of critters or deficiencies.
Will be updating week 3s avg temps and humidity.
Day 32 - hot as hell this week with temps around 95 F. The girls haven't skipped a beat. Keeping them hydrated and keeping eyes on them has certainly helped. They shared a gal of water this morning with 1.5TBS of Big Bloom. Have been letting the soil carry them to this point. Hoping to see some solid gains. Will monitor how they like and continue on course. Responding well to the training, except I did manage to break a stem. Attempted to save it, so we will see.
The Critical Auto is oddly shaped, probably because I started LST late. Can't wait to see how she turns out. Pretty little bid sites developing nicely.
Green Crack is laid down well, can't wait to see how full she gets!
Week 4 weather stats:
94 F max temp
78 min
81 avg temp
61% avg humidity
93% max
30% min
Greetings Growmies! Safe to say that we have started the flowering phase!
Critical Auto has already been showing a good bit of white pistols. Now small purple hairs can be seen as well. Quite a few bid sites. Have her opened up as much as possible to allow max sun penetration. With a little touch, the buds are giving a nice pungent and citrus smell!
The Green Crack is really loving her training and has just started to show signs of flowering. Have her really flat and open after the training to maximize her potential.
Defoliation has been light, only removing leaves if they are blocking a bud site.
Plan on increasing the nutes to 2 TBS/gal as directed on the bottle as well as slightly increasing frequency.
8/2 - Each took 1 gal water with 2 TBS FF Big Bloom. They were thirsty!
It's been HOT with multiple days over 90F with high humidity as well, but so far no signs of stress or damage. Keeping them hydrated is key. Still feeling the weight to determine if need a refill, or will also water if top layer of soil is super dry.
The Critical Auto is in full flower mode, and the buds are starting to thicken up. Fair amount of frosting on the leaves around them too! They smell really great also. I have accepted that perhaps LST was started a bit late, as she kind of stop vegging at that point and went into flowering. Comical how she's bent over, but can't wait to see how the buds continue to grow.
The Green Crack is the real super star of this show. She's not very tall due to the heavy LST, but she sure is low and wide, with a TON of bud sites and colas. Some of the smaller branches are still pliable, so gently securing them down continues to allow more light in. Minor defoliation, only removing a leaf of it's in the way. Hoping for a big yield!
Both accepting full serving of FoxFarms Big Bloom, which is 4tbs/gal every other watering.
8/8 is day 42!
Photos from day 45!
Avg high temps: 93
Avg high RH: 86
Week 7! Very impressed with these two from FastBuds! Stopped any LST at this point, with the exception of a smaller branch or two being pulled back to keep the buds exposed.
Creen Crack loved the training and I was able to keep her low and wide. What would have been the top of the plant has transformed to almost resemble a candleabra. Some lower fans started showing color, so light defoliation applied to ensure light and airflow.
Critical is compact with buds stacking up. She was the first to present the buds and Stankey aromas.
Both have been doing well with the nutrients. Started with smaller portions so far, like 1.5tsp/gal.
Avg high temps : 80
Avg high humidity: 94%
Weather was brutal this week with avg highs in mid 90s with 69% avg humidity. I have been sheltering the ladies when it rains to try to stay ahead of any rot or mold. So far so good. A couple of neighboring plants have shown signs of possible phytoplasma infection, but none on these two girls.
Reduced Big Bloom nutes and upped the Tiger Bloom to normal dose of 3tsp/gal. No issues noticed so far.
Green Crack is starting to get some smell to her buds.
The Critical buds feel dense and sticky, and are pungent yet fruity. Can't wait to see where they finish!
Moved the gals inside to protect the bids from a week or more of temps in 90s paired with high humidity.
Hyphotonflux HPF3000 for the light, 20/4 schedule.
Transition to indoors seems to have went smoothly. Not sure if color changes were due to light or not.
Critical Auto had a good bit of aphids. Used DrZymes to treat in the days ahead of harvest.
Still learning a lot!
Being my first official grow, I wasnt sure if what I was seeing was right or not. About this time much of the fans has yellowed, and some were starting to dry out it seems. Decided she was ready for the chop.
Stopped feeding Midway thru the previous week.
Great learning experience! Easy to grow and maintain, and was a joy to watch her grow! May have waited a tad longer than I should have to harvest, but that's part of the learning process. Did not do a wet weight as I hung the whole plant to dry.
Ended with 3.15 oz after drying! The smaller, dried leaves were a pain to remove. Will try a wet trim next run.
81 days
Day 83 chop!
Little over an ounce dry weight.
She's not the biggest but she's mine!
Discovered a heavy aphid infestation on the lower bud and leaves of this gal when we brought her inside. Treated the best I could giving how ripe she was. Washed the buds at harvest, and that helped a ton!
She was smaller in size and density compared to her cousin, but that could have been my fault. Possible stunt from the solo cup or from the LST. Tons of trichromes on her too, even after the bath.
Prevention is key outdoors!
