This is a summary of the vegetation phase for PAK. She is a bit slow in veg like a true indica but has a vigorous root system and short internodal length. Almost no smell at all until she accumulated some size and even then just a very generic "plant" smell. Her structure is short and bushy and she does not like to spread out/branch quickly. Picture with the LED on is the last day before 12/12.
She is almost a week (5 days) into 12/12 and she is starting to show her flowers. Pictures were taken right after watering so she still looks a bit droopy. I had a few spider mites in veg that I haven't seen signs of for weeks but I continue to spray the entire plant with a homemade garlic-hot pepper spray at each watering. Bit of a sweet earthy smell starting to emerge when you rub the stems but still very mild overall.
Summary for 2nd week of flowering. Almost no stretch whateoever and PAK is packing on the pistils with some resin development already. While I'm not anticipating a great yield the buds are stacking nicely with a mildly sweet kushy smell to them, should be a tasty smoke.
Day 21 today and everything is coming along great. She is extremely dense so I'll probably slowly defoliate some of the lower fan leaves over time to open air flow for the buds. Nice stacking and buds look like little golf balls. Mild smell so far but it's definitely got the sweet pineapple smell I was hoping for.
Day 27 Update: Everything coming along well. Odour and trichrome production picked up a lot this week. She has a pineapple/piney/dank smell that had me get the carbon filter out. I lollipopped her a bit and will use the popcorn I harvested later to make butter.
Noticed a little tip burn this week so dialed back the nutrients a touch. Everything is coming along great though getting fatter and stinkier each day. I got to sample one of the larger popcorn buds I trimmed off when lollipopping last week and it's already pretty potent with a complex flavour profile. You can definitely taste her Bubba kush heritage with some fruitiness that makes her unique.
Things are starting to fatten up and she is getting LOUD. Really strong pineapple musk whenever I open the cabinet. Noticed some spider mites this week so doubled up on my hot pepper/garlic spray to keep them at bay while staying pesticide free. Not too long till flush/harvest now!
The violet/reddish tones really started to show in the calyxes this week. Spider mites have continued to be a problem on some fan leaves but haven't affected the buds so I've been spraying every 2-3 days with hot pepper spray. Aroma is pretty strong now almost too much for my carbon filter but it's pretty pleasant. Soon I'll be starting the flush and preparing for harvest!
Final week of bloom. Unfortunately I've been battling the mites pretty bad here at the end regularly stripping infected fan leaves and using capsaicin, garlic and 50/50 isopropyl/H2O sprays to keep them at bay but it's just controlling their population at this point not eliminating them. I started flushing and will harvest a bit early (around day 55, supposed to be a 60 day strain). Will be thoroughly disinfecting/bombing my cabinets before my next plants go bloom.
Other than mites though this has been a pretty smooth sailing grow. Definitely would have vegged a lot longer had I known just how little she would stretch. The buds are every dense though with a good caking of trichromes and definite reds and violets adding color contrast. Aroma is very pleasant as well which to me is like a sweeter-fruity Bubba.
Purple Afghan Kush is a slow vegger that doesn't stretch hardly at all in bloom as such needs a prolonged veg time to get good yields. I could have vegged mine longer for yield but she still put out dense resinous buds with deep purple almost black colors in the tops. She builds a very sturdy structure however and is fully capable of supporting her own weight in flower so not a high maintenance strain by any means. I ended up harvesting a little early at Day 55 mostly for personal reasons but also because the mites were getting tougher to control at the end. It's got a really great aroma that smells like a somebody soaked Bubba kush in pineapple juice. Bud structure very golf ball like with a fair bit of fan leaves to trim. Dry weight and smoke report to come after dry/cure.
Hey Mark! We have never talked before but I became a big fan of Dinafem a couple years ago when I grew out a few Sweet Deep Grapefruits. Those turned out to be the most vigorous, high yielding, sweet tasting buds I've ever had. As soon as I saw the release of PAK I knew I had to grow her. Always been a fan of tropical aromas/tastes and I love the Bubba Kush-lazy fan leaf-tropical look. So far looking great. I've seen you post somewhere it was one of your top 5 strains. Hoping I can say the same in a few months.
2 weeks into bloom and looking in great shape :)
Our pak or purple Afghan Kush is a very special strain and as you are discovering very easy to manage in this flower stage ;)
Good luck with the flower show I'll be watching with interest :)
All the best
Mark..
Thanks Mark! We've definitely rounded the turn and she is into the last half of flowering now. Definitely excited to see her fall colours as she finishes up as I've never grown a "Purple" strain before. Harvest and smoke report are only a few weeks away!
Only thing I would change about my grow is I would have given her a longer veg time. PAK doesn't stretch much at all so make sure she fills the footprint your looking for before flip. Otherwise it's a low maintenance super bushy strain. Best of luck with yours!
Your well into the flower phase now and those buds are exploding :)
So glad that our genetics have pleased you and we can't wait to see how our purple afghan kush turns out :)
Looking fantastic so far and that finish line is getting closer :)
All the best
Mark..
Hello, sorry I know this is an older grow diary. Just wanted to say what a good job you did with this stain. I can only hope that my grow turns out like yours, yours is exactly what I have in-visioned for mine. Anyways great job and happy sowing my friend. :D
