GrowCNanswered grow question 3 years ago I soak my seeds in water for 24-36 hours. Then I plant them in moist soil or peat pellet. During this critical "start of life" phase you have to be careful to NOT over water. If your seeds turn black or a tap root or sprout emerges and dies soon after it was probably too much water.
I personally do not like the paper towel method. The tap root is very delicate and is easily damaged. Also, if you check the paper towel before bed you might have almost nothing but by the time you get home from work the next day the root can be much longer making it more difficult to handle and plant without damage. Mother nature doesn't use a paper towel so I don't feel bad about not using one either. The paper towel does have the benefit of allowing you to see when the seed has sprouted. But, if you just plant it you will know in a day or two anyhow.
