Well, another crop is starting. Keeping it simpler this time with number of strains... only 3. LA Peyote Kush from Seedsman is one of those strains. Just received these from the GotM contest in October or November, getting old and i smoke a lot of pot... flip a coin, doesn't matter. Kinda excited to grow these for their advertised flavor as well as never having grown a Seedsman seed before.
This is obviously a boring week, and that trend will continue for another month. However, the diary must start somewhere. I'mnot taking 20 pictures of a simply, tiny plant, so expect more of the same while it is boring.
I'll be using a fully dimmable 150w light for seedlings and early vege. Some diy lights will be used as the plants outgrow that footprint. They wil likely spend at least 5-7 days under the FC-4800 before 12/12 light schedule flip. The FC-4800 is flowering 4 plants right now and doing a wonderful job as expected.
A not on quality of lights -- most lights nowadays give you an excellent spectrum for growing. You can split hairs about CCT, but most of it works well. Where you get return on investment with a more expensive light is efficacy. You also get less heat with increased efficacy, but in some cases you may want that heat, so i leave that in a grey area. No matter what, we all save money if we spend fewer watts while producing same number of photons per second.
You also get increase longevity with higher quality lights, like the FC-4800. Those advertised 50-60k hours of use are only accurate when run at a similar watts per diode as the FC-4800. At 0.25watts/diode, you are up against diminishing returns. More diodes don't help at this point. Watts per diode values higher than this will not reach the same 50-60k hours of use before dimming to 90% of original intensity. They will not achieve teh same efficacy. This is one way you can spot shady spec sheets. If yo do the math with the FC4800 and compare to Samsung's chip spectsheets etc etc.. it makes sense. When you look at cheaper lights advertising similar values, like 2.7-3.0umol/j range efficacy, you can see just how badly they are lying.
This is also how you can see there is no difference according to samsungs own information between the H and B version of LM301. The "D" version is different. It is a lower version of the same chip... for a person (me too) who lacks the vocabulary to say it more eloquently and precisely why. Spec sheet don't lie! You can convert lum/w to umol/j. it just takes a conversion i know nothing about. Since we have a the spectrum maped out, it is possible though. these values are equal to each other when you do the math per bin... same tables, same graphs, simple changes of metrics used due to target markets invovled with the chips.
Alrighty... 1 picture.. but made up for it writing a book for the opening week.

LA Peyote Kush from Seedsman
Vegetative Phase: 7 days completed
Okay, so 1 week above ground. I only pictured 1 plant and over time the best one will be the primary focus. I'll reference consistency among the plants, of course, but will show 1 plant developing week-to-week in the pictures. A couple of the plants are showing some red/purple pigment in 2nd set of serrated leaves. First time with that, and another strain went 5/5 showing the trait.
When it rains, it pours.. not necessarily in a negative way. I'm mostly indifferent about it, but the novelty is interesting for a moment. I'm a pragmatist. If it doesn't improve quality, i don't care much for superficial aesthetics compared to things more directly related to function. It's gonna be set a fire and smoked.. incomplete combustion looks the same regardless :P Regardless, hopefully we get some red expressed in future pictures for those that are interested in it. I had no idea this strain had that trait.
This is a boring time.. as long as they survive all is well. Don't expect 20 pictures of a 2.5node plant. I am just trying not to burn them with light at moment, while also pushing that boundary relative to my environmental factors.
At moment the FC-4800 is flowering 4 plants, so it obviously is not illuminating these plants, yet. They will be in the Mars 4x4 under a slightly larger light than currently within a week. I need to sanitize that tent as it had a load of pollen in it.. and still does at this exact moment for that matter.

LA Peyote Kush - Seedsman (Thanks to @seedsman for sponsoring GotM contest, this being one of my choices)
14 days above ground
Okay, doing much better than first winter crop. At 10 days, they were twice the size. Mission accomplished not stunting these girls. A 40-day-ish vege should be plenty as long as i don't cause any self-inflected impediments. Relatively best plant is pictured. None are especially perfect specimens at this point in time.
Hoping for a minty-menthol smell and flavor from these plants as advertised. these plants have a few defects early on, but i expect tem to grow out of those minor aesthetic issues. One is more prevalent than others with some wrinkle and imperfections in first 2 sets of serrated leaves. Germination for LA Peyote was not 100% like the other strains i planted at same time. That's okay because planted a ton relative to need and expected to cull some anyway.

20 full days above ground and on 21st.
These pictures are taken immediately after transplant and a heavy irrigation. They are not in 1 gallon pots. They will have 1 more transplant, at least 7 days recovery, and then off to bloom phase they go. Nothing got stunted, so I'm happy with this run so far compared to last. Light was swapped out for a 240w to cover more square feet. It is running at 180w and 24" from plants. We'll see how they react and adjust.
Any isolated stetching, i'll move that plant to middle. If it is accross the board, i'll inch light a bit closer. It's a 2.8umol/J lamp, so it's a bit much for vegetative phase given 6" on center spacing of bars. If it were 8" i could run these full power and have a little more even spread of light. I have to reframe a couple of these 240w bad boys and make them proper for a 4x4 vege area.
Good color, decent growth... wish it were a bit faster. We'll see if the increased umol/s kicks them in their ass a bit.

*** at least one of these is not the plant listed. The pigmented one is definitely platinum swabi punch. i moved tallest plants to center, so at least 1 has moved from the original positions, which is what i photographed. this goes for the other 2 diaries, too. it is 'mostly' the right plants in the pictures, BWAhahah. I bet nobody could tell, though. This week only. This will be corrected next week.**

I've got a few of these going in hopes of a couple with a minty flavor to keep for breeding. So far they look great. Decent vege growth.
Seeing signs of axillary growth and nearly large enough to top relative to number of future colas i want. I will top above the 5th node. I will strip the lowest axillary growth. 8 future primary colas will remain. The nodes at top i will train out to side until lower growth reaches same height. Once apical dominance is split, i'll let them all grow vertically together. Everyting below that point will likely be stripped heading into bloom phase.
That's the plan... we'll see if my Lenny-side comes out between now and then. "Can i pet the rabbits, George?"

40 complete 24 hour cycles, 41st ongoing in pictures. Wil flip to bloom after 45 days due to schedule... have a couple extra plants to fill space as they all seem healthy. ripped off 2 leaves over 6 weeks from entire garden with hint of wpm. Been religious about applying neem after seedling stage.
The structure of these plants is all over the board.. no consistency. I'm more interested in flavor, so this is a minor concern for me but could be important to others. I am bending down the top most nodes to break apical dominance. Will do that for the next few weeks. Will take a few clones off the healthiest plants. robustness is an important trait for me.
Transplanted into 5-gallon nursery pots (3.6gal actual volume). Will be increasing nutes to 700-ish ppm next rez refill. The current rez is somewhere between headed in that direction. Have some nutrient issues that have slowly crept in, so i don't have to overreact. May have irrigated with some bad water, but the rez was cleaned and re-filled before the transplant. Even before that i thought i needed to increase N a bit anyway.

These are all over the board in structure, but a few have some thick stems full of vascular tissue that have some promise. These were stripped a bit late - 6 days into flower. On lowest 2 limbs i stripped all by top 2 nodes. I may use these for any last minute cuttings from any plants setting themselves apart.
Glad i planted more than i needed. If i get a nice menthol/mint flavor i'll be happy.

I planted quite a few of these. 75% germinated and of those the phenotypes are wildly volatile. I've got at least 3 or 4 good plants, though. I'm hoping one of the good ones has a the advertised menthol/minty flavor or even piney... anything along those lines.
Like the PSP, i took some 2 more cuttings from a different plant. As flower progresses i could see one stacking up much better than the others. Nice thick stems. Good internode lengths (unlike platinum swabi punch, lol holy fuck is that thing stretching). This will be a sturdy plant with potential to hold some weight.
Plant 10-12 of these, if you are looking for a few good plants. They are happy looking, healthy, but just little stumps compared to vast majority of my crop. Definitely have an aroma i can imagine develops into a menthol-like profile. It's a bit different than i've had before, so it should be something new for me to harvest in that regard.
I want to make some fem seeds this summer. Flavor and yield will be my top priority. I wouldn't mind 2 minty phenos and some throw-in hybrids to fill the space. I've got some other options panningn out. I really liked the flavor of Buttermilk Biscuits, so that's at least one of pollen donators for 2-3 breeding runs over spring/summer. Can do 1 outside and a couple back-to-back inside.
I was a bit worried when flower began, but these really ... blossomed, lol. They are super healthy and happy all throughout the grow room. The runts are a bit worrisome due to congestion and potential for microbes. If you follow my diaries, WPM has plagued me for the last 1 year of grows - even with all new equipment and a new room to use. This run has no hint of it. This further cements my sentiments it was weak, inbred genetics. The same strain/brand was the epicenter of each problem. I think i got a bad batch of Garlic Storm seeds or the seed seller stored them like shit? i don't know but it sucks, because that was one of the tastiest blueberry-flavored plants i've had to date, but it was a fucking dumpster fire evertie i grew it and ruined 3 different crops.
Lesson learned -- throw out the trash.. don't try to salvage it. It only ruins everything around it. In future i won't bother with these runts. the only reason they are alive is because i didn't pop enough seeds to cull them. So, they waste space in my grow room with 1/3rd of a proper yield. It wasn't just LA Peyote Kush, but LAPK was the highest percentage of duds. PSP had a clunker and NL had a clunker. 4 or 5 plants... so in future i'll pop 150% of what i need and kill off the extras to ensure a properly filled room. This means getting off teh 20/seed train and making my own. The prices for seeds are a total fucking joke. It is price-gouging no matter what way you look at it.
It shouldn't be 3-5-10 packs.. it should be 30-50-100 for the same damn prices, respectively. It's like consumers are so fuckign bad at math they don't even recognize getting ripped off. gladly get ripped off... this is caused by equal parts stupidity and greed.
Looks like i do have a little taco-action going... headed to reais lights 2-4" after i am done updating diaries.

Well, how things change a few weeks into flower. These plants have turned out to be a good choice. By far the most trichomes at this point and based on my liited experience, i think these could get quite crusty. I'm not sure which has more trichomes - the Platinum Gelato mother or 2-3 of these plants. Go check out either platinum gelato diaries to see what those end up looking like. this mother is the frostiest of the bunch (seen in first run).
Excellent stretch, which seems to be done. The pistils are that super thick fluffy type, which i like for whimsical reasons. These are stacking up the best of the current crop. These are moderate to high yielders, i'd guess at this point. We'll see how fat the get.

Well, despite some germ issues and a couple plants being on the runtish side, LA Peyote Kush is the 2nd best strain in my tent based on looks alone. If it has a nice strong flavor i like, it will be the best stain of the 4 grown. While it has gotten crusty, platinum gelato has taken the lead as expected (clone, grown exact plant twice previously and 3 or 4 grows with the strain).
Some wpm issues have cropped up. LAPK is one of the plants that has showng some symptomes. You can check the NL posting this week for more indepth info if you want.
These are ripening nice and fast. Eight weeks should be no problem. They are keeping up, more or less, with the platinum gelato mother, which will be done in 50-55 day range. Thought they'd get a bit more crusty on teh leaves, but i don't smoke leaves so i don't give a fuck what kind of trichome coating they have. It looks good in pics and may mildly correlate to potency, but lacking that trait does not strongly correlate to weakness. It's a trait that gets augmented for purely sales/asthetic reasons, so i care not for it.
Probably the best yielding plant of this bunch, and has potential to be an excellent producer with at least a moderate-to-above average floor in that regard. I like to write out how i feel at the moment and can see how that progresses over time... Seeing the volatilty reinforces patience. However, the more i encounter mutants and retards, the more i realize they are a total waste of space.
Hope this tastes good. I need some more 'keepers' to breed this summer. Unlike their website, this has a fruity, sweet aroma. I hope it evolves into the menthol/minty, though.

This strain was in my doghouse early due to germ issues, but it ends up being the best new strain in the current crop. If it has more flavor, it's better than the Platinum Gelato, too. The rate of development through flower day 39 has been ridiculously fast... it's just about Ludicrous Speed... (Spaceballs reference)
It's also frosty and bulbous... One of the plants is packing on an additional layer. It is the one macro above that doesn't look as ripe, but it is underneath. I do prefer the others, actually. This causes 2 different timelines for development with new growth much later than previous growth. It is tougher to harvest at a consistent point.. Either let the old stuff amber up or the new stuff will be a bit underdeveloped etc, but not a major problem... I didn't take a cutting from that plant anyway.
Some inconsistency, but less so than the Northern Lights i am concurrently growing. Five or six of these are fantastic. One is a runt. I believe the one that sprouted a little funky is behind the others too, but turned out okay despite the handicapped beginning.

Well, these girls are nearing the end... Really like how these are turning out accross the board, despite 50/50 volatility in structure. The buds are dense and consistent on all the plants. Still don't smell much menthol-tpye of aroma, but still hoping for that evolution. I did take 1 plant down a couple days ago. I got a little anxious about some wpm. That plant had more than others at the time and my concern was as much about the rest of the room's risk. Despite the early harvest, they haven't shrunk too much more than normal. Haven't checked today, but bet they are almost dry on outside by now. can get a better idea of that plant's outcome soon enough.
These have been ripening since just before a full 6 weeks, so they won't need much more time. The colas are already super dense/tight. Mostly cloudy trichomes. I expect it to slow down drinking soon. I'd like to push these as long as i can, but the moment it looks like i'll lose buds instead of fan leaves to wpm, i will cut them down early if necessary. I don't mind removing fan leaves, but when it's on the sugar leaves i remove the whole bud that is adjacent.
side note... platinum gelato.. again, exposed to weaker plants and just swats that wpm away like it is nothing.. this further reinforces teh feeling that it's more about some weak plants and not much i can avoid. I've taken microbiology. i understand the very simple and basic concept of sanitization and employ it properly.
Tell you what.. most of those concoctions out there are utter bullshit... cornell formula? pbbbt, trash. potassium bicarbonate or sodium bicarbonate? milk? nah, doesn't work... low rh? just spreads faster, little higher rh, just reproduces faster.. i'm going to try a regimen of B.a. next cycle... try to outcompete those little fuckign airborne spores.. .those fucking rat bastards pieces of shit... The neem does keep things clean in vege and into first 10 days of bloom before i can't apply anymore. Need something safe for flowers.
all these magical antifungal organic natural bullshit.. it all sucks. it doesn't work.

Harveseted on:
98th day from sprout
53rd day of bloom
These have been a treat to grow. Even the smaller plants have consistent buds. Density and smell etc are all very similar despite different structures present. Took one early due to concern with wpm problem, but i quickly got that under control and held off ont he rest. That extra week definitely helped with the more recent harvested plants.
If you want high percentages of amber trichomes, you probably need to go 56-63 days. I don't want my weed knocking me out.. i do shit while high... i don't want some broken down used-to-be THC molecule, lol. FWIW, degradation starts when it is cloudy. Clear absolutely does not mean absent of THC nor low THC on its own. your eyes cannot resolve these things.. it's silly to think they can provide any useful information as to the contents of a trichome at any particular time... unless you got a GC machine in there? didn't think so. if you have research related to this, link it in comments... that's potentially real applicable knowledge you can bank on, unlike anecdotal nonsense that gets perpetuated for generations, like flushing at end of harvest.
Second time i've used the bowl trimer for a harvest. It is sufficient for me. I've noticed much larger, heavier nugs do get caught up on the sides and the 'fingers' won't roll them (2 nugs i am holding in pictures are an example.). The platinum gelato didn't produce nugs like that, but LAPK did. Even though i snip off some nugs to reduce size of top colas, it was not enough. I had to reach in and push the heavier ones toward center anytime they got in a traffic jam along sides. Anyway, if considering a bowl trimmer, expect to pull of some ruffage when you break the buds up to smoke or pull out the pruners and clean them up if important to you. The later obviously doesn't save as much time and effort.
These develop quickly. They will look like nugs early. Once they look like real nugs with retracted pistils etc, it takes about 2 weeks for aber to start showing up in a consistent manner. I probably took them down with 5-10% amber, but they've been ripe-looking for 10-14 days and not changing much externally since then.
Auto-burping bucket for curing. A bucket(s) with gamma lid, a couple check valves, some 1/4" tubing, a couple top-hat grommets, an air pump and a drill... Easy enough to do. I've put a mesh bag around my air pump to help reduce any dust blown into bucket. First time trying this, so starting out with a 2-minute burp every 8 hours. Refresh that o2 and avoid anaerobic growth, which is the cause of bad smells and other bad outcomes. Defintiely need a commecial air pump if you want to run more than 1 or 2 buckets. Playing with manifold valves and such didn't do the trick. Need more psi to power through any minor difference in necessary pressure per bucket to pop all the check valves without issues.
I'll do some dried nug shots later. I'll update any description of smoke too. A couple nugs from the plant harvested 9-10 days before are posted. The more recent plants won't have nearly as much hair.
