The buckets are bubbling and this time out I'll be trying another offering from my local seed bank's ever-growing collection of 'souvenirs'. I'll be growing an intriguing sounding hybrid, Grandaddy Bruce.
Grandaddy Purple x Bruce Banner comprises two widely venerated strains of weed with quality genetics that resulted in combinations to calm and stimulate flawlessly. This hybrid with certain Indica-bias is renowned for the weed adventure like none other. It’s no strain for reckless exercise; otherwise, the effects will be daunting. First is Grandaddy Purple, a widely-known Indica, while the second is Bruce Banner, an especially heavy strain with elevated levels of THC.
- Strain Genetics:Grandaddy Purple x Bruce Banner
- Strain Dominant: Indica-Dominant
- THC Content: 26%
- CBD Content: 0.7%
- Flowering Time: 8-10 Weeks
I soaked the seed overnight in distilled water and then popped the seed directly into a pete plug the next day. I placed the plug into a grow tray containing some PH balanced, filtered water. I placed the tray on top of a seedling heat mat and placed a humidity dome on top of the tray. Seed sprouted within 48 hours and the first root broke through the pete plug about 48 hours after that. I transplanted the seedling into a 4" net pot containing clay pellets today, 7 days after soaking the seed. A moderate dose of nutes in the rez, EC .5 and PH at 6.0. She'll get top feedings until her roots break through the net pot. The plan is to veg for 3-4 weeks before setting up the ScrOG and flipping things to flower. The lighting in the tent has been upgraded so I'm keen to see what differences it will make 😎
Off we go with another grow.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
Grandaddy Bruce is doing well. I'm surprised to already see some purple hues in this seedling and am wondering if it has more to do with a couple of cold nights in the tent (around 59 F) than her Grandaddy Purple heritage. In any event, she's alive and seems to be thriving. I was giving her daily top feedings up until the roots started showing through the net pot a couple of days ago; 5 days after being moved to the bucket.
There's been feed in her bucket since the transplant last week and I won't be changing things up for another week as she's just started sipping her drink. I had to bring the PH down a little earlier in the week, but other than that I haven't made any adjustments.
Things should take off over the next couple of weeks and you can look forward to my usual dance moves - FIM, ScrOG, pancake.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
Grandaddy Bruce fell victim to a some overfeeding and nute burn early on (as evidenced by the lower leaves) but seems to be back on track.
Rez change today and the VeloKelp is now out of the mix. Visited my local hydro supply store to pick up a few things last week and had a great discussion with the owner about nutrients. She highly discouraged the use of VeloKelp in DWC, stating it had the potential to cause more harm than good given that not everything in the product can be easily absorbed, and further, had the potential to attract gnats, promote mould/fungus and rot. She also said to use a light hand with Nature's Candy because complex carbohydrates can't be broken down in DWC and can attract some pretty nasty microbes. This is something that has been pointed out to me before by a fellow DWC grower, the wise and powerful, @Oozlefinch 😉
The plants seem to be good with the new lighting. Currently, it's about 30" above the canopy (such as it is) at 50% power.
I plan to FIM her later in week and get her ready for flower, hopefully after week 4.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
Grandaddy Bruce is back on track and looking much better. PH was running high during the first week but it's now under control.
Gave 'her' a FIMing and lollipopping two days ago and the plan is to switch the lights to flowering by this time next week. I turned up the light intensity a smidge, now running at 60%. I'll ramp it up as she starts to fill out.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
Grandaddy Bruce is looking good. Lights now set for 12/12 after 4 weeks in veg.
Rez change today, 14 days since the last one. Bloom nutes in the mix now.
ScrOG net will go in a week or two once she starts to stretch a bit.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
The Grandaddy Bruce is starting to fill out nicely. I'll let her stretch out a few more days before getting the ScrOG net going.
Lights have been running 12/12 for the past week; she's been enjoying the addition of bloom/flower nutes and Sensizym since that time as well. Things should start popping soon.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
Grandaddy Bruce is getting bigger and doing well.
Broke out the ScrOG net yesterday and bent her into place. Also took the opportunity to do one last rez change beforehand while I could still do so easily.
A few weeks of stretch to look forward to now. It looks like Bruce will be the smaller plant in the tent this time around. We shall see.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
Grandaddy Bruce is chugging along. Her stretch has been pretty modest up to this point and has only grown a couple of inches since last week. I've had to raise her bucket to bring her canopy more level with the Larry OG growing beside her.
A bit of rust on some of the leaves - a hangover from previous weeks PH issues me thinks. She doesn't seem to like anything north of 6.1 and it was a daily battle for a week or more to get things under control.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
Grandaddy Bruce is starting to shape up. The rusty leaves caused by her 'former' deficiency don't seem to be spreading 🤞 and she's looking more lush. As my buddy @Oozlfinch so wisely said, "Some plants are just assholes". Ya. Bruce kind of is.
Bruce has had a really modest stretch and is only 20" tall. She has a suprisigly compact structure.
I raised her bucket again to even her canopy with the much taller Larry OG growing beside her, who is 10" taller. Got myself a bit of a redneck jenga tower going on.
Rez change today. EC has been running .8-.9 and PH has been between 5.8-6.0.
Did some light pruning and a little cleanup. We'll see what she becomes.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
Gotta eat some crow this week. Last week I referred to this plant as a bit of an asshole. Turns out it's me.
Finally dialled in the cause of my ongoing rusty leaf issues. Lockout due to overfeeding. Turns out my EC pen was reading very low and after calibrating it I discovered readings that I thought were around 1.0 EC (500 PPM) were actually 2.5 (1250 PPM). Yikes.
Note to self: don't forget to check your equipment regularly 🤦♂️
Stupidity noted. Rez adjusted. Crow eaten.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
Old Bruce is still looking a bit rough but is definitely on the upswing now that the lockout issues have been corrected.
She's small of stature, but she's developing some nice chunky buds. Smell is fantastic, sweet fruit and Mr. Clean. Oddly delicious.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
Old Grandad is toddling along. She's looking a bit crusty following earlier lockout issues but that's behind her now. Buds are getting fat, frosty, and fruity. About three more weeks to go me thinks.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
Bruce is finishing up nicely. I gave her a pretty good clean up earlier in the week, pruning away quite a few lower branches. Her fat buds have a wonderful sweet and fruity smell.
Rez change today and I've started to reduce her feed a bit. Had a peak at the trichs with the scope today; things are mostly cloudy but she still has some ripening to do though. Probably 10-14 days from harvest.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
Grandaddy Bruce is finishing strong.
Buds are fat and chunky and have a nice fruity, shoe polish kind of fragrance. Top buds are starting to show a few amber trichomes but I'll wait until I see more throughout the plant before harvesting; hopefully, within the next 10 days.
I removed the ScrOG net from the tent a few days ago as she doesn't really need the support being so short and stocky. Removing the net also allowed me to more easily do some cleanup and remove a lot of the crispy leaves that resulted from the earlier lockout issues.
Getting close! Looking forward to the harvest
Thanks for tuning in ✌️
I overfed the crap out of her for several weeks as my EC meter was out of calibration and she really suffered until I finally set things right. She was a really short and stocky plant and I can't wonder if my overfeeding stunted her growth. In the end she produced some very fat, fruity smelling buds - somewhat akin to Mr. Clean/shoe polish. Quite a unique and delicious fragrance.
