Exciting first grow ever trying autos!
Due to my past issues in overzealous watering habits, I have chosen coco coir as to offset my pathological overwatering habits.
I selected the Purple Punch because of what I have read about its fast flowering abilities. lets see....
SO The purple punch seed I planted on the 20th seemed to be a dud after all. Quickly replanted another one on the 27th which germinated in 2 short days.
germinated directly in substrate with minimum watering and transparent dome.
Started to pump on nutes a little and, of course, the PP picked up its pace like a charm.
PP: looking like the underdog for a while, you now cannot almost notice the 8 days germination difference.
applied some LST all over with some defoliation and tucking o to promote side branching and allow light to penetrate.
Explosion: almost overnight all the ladies have to doubled in size, and then some.... the full 4x4 is now filled completely and space management is starting to get difficult.
PP: look at her going! just because the others are in full flower and she is in pre flower, otherwise no one could tell she is over a week younger than the lot.
I am noticing they are doubling in size every 36 hours now. The sheer growth is quite impressive. I can probably say that this is the true week of pre-flower: all colas are showing blooming pistils at each apex.
Started to use some michorizae friendly additives to support the root growth.
Preflowering for them all. Pistils are now clear and bud sided as forming all over.
Nute schedule has been amended to introduce bloom feeding gradually.
PP: probably the most symmetric topping and LST I have ever done. strong growth and consistent all over.
And when you start to think that everything went well:TAH DAH!!!!!! signs of mites!
I panicked checkd all pots an, sadly they are affecting every plant. everything has been sterilised with bleach and cinnamon tea/ neem oil has been thoroughly sprayed and poured in every pot.
I am tending to think they are compost mites: thy have not attacked any roots, they only gather on decomposing leaves and rotting stems in the soil. Not a single mite was noticed anywhere but the top soil and nowhere else. that been said: better them dead than me worried. I will continue with cinnamon tea and neem oil spray.
We are in full Bloom! the pistils structures are getting filled in exponentially daily, we may be able to see a fully fledged bud by the end of the week.
The compost mites issue seems in check: I do add cinnamon powder to every watering as it appears repels and kills mites and critters in general.
Daily monitoring of the leaves and colas also shows no sign of mite in anything but the top soil yet.
Slowly but surely we are getting there.
The bud sites are stretching and blossoming all over
The mite issue seems to be kept in check: topsoil daily misting of neem oil solution plus the use of atomised cinnamon in each feeding seems to be doing the trick. No leaf or bud has seen any mites so far, fingers crossed, and 3/4 weeks away from harvest I would like to keep it that way.
It may very well be the case that they are compost mites and they are only feeding on decaying matter in the soil.
I have increased the feeding schedule a little:I have kept it still relatively low considering these are the second or third to last week of feeding. ppm is at 1000 or lower; I could admittedly push it to 1400ppm right with intermitted lower days at 7/850ppm, but the last thing I would like to do is to fall into another nute lockout.
Did split the main trunk moving her: immediately patched it with tape holding it to its original shape firmly. 3 days after, still no sign of dining branches, hopefully it won't be affected much and heal itself.
Weekly flush done: now she is ready to gorge on nutes for the next 2 last weeks
She still doing her thing. I have lightly increased the nutes to a full dose of nutes and she seemed to have taken it well but a faint burnt tips, almost too tiny too notice: I am at least glad I have finally witnessed the whole spectrum of how much she take take in feeding.
The mite issue seems to be in check. nothing but the casual white mite having a stroll through the topsoil and absolutely nothing on the roos/stems/leaves/buds.
Without any particularly invasive LST she is bulking up massively on her last stretch. she will rival the MOBY DICK in size in no time. Plenty of bud sites everywhere.
witnessing the various stages of growth in this entire 4x4 grow tent, I will focus on less plants ( 2 max in 5gal pots) or will plant 5 in 3 gallon pots, next time.
why all this? I am noticing it is become counterproductive having the tent literally so densely packed with 4 gorgeous plants. The Purple punch is not showing her full potential, she has about two dozen colas altogether, packed with bud sites, but sadly I can only expose the first 5cm on such canopy through tucking etc. I could have get a shot of filling the whole 4x4 tent with this plant only.
My fear was to not being able to fill the whole canopy and I not only achieved it, but it soon got out of control. The beautiful genetics from barney s farm are certainly a powerhouse in consistency and size (4 different ones in one tent, and all well above the average auto size you get researching and browsing out there).
Will certainly either upgrade to a 12x8 or plant 1 or maximum 2 phenos per tent so to get the most out of them.
Such I shame seeing so many underdeveloped popcorn buds to be just beneath the canopy that will never fully develop.
Alrighty then!
the upper canopy is in the final it of stretching, it looks she will be the largest plant in the tent, even bushier than the Moby dick.
I can see a dozen of colas, all developing massive flower sites and very short internodes all the way down to mid canopy. fingers crossed, we can see a good yield with her.
This particular phenotype is starting to sow a distinctive and characteristic fresh pineapple scent. Sweet, sour, aromatic, just gorgeous: I am curious to see how it will develop and translate into the plant final terps profile.
Will update as the week goes by as much as I can.
Well Well Well.I said that this plant was going to come the largest in the tent, and I am not that far wrong: although she finished stretching and she sit the taller, she is packing massively.
I am currently experimenting a different approach with this strain: unlike any of the other 3 strains in the tent, I have not done much but the bare minimum to the plant past topping.
I am curious to see if by leaving most leaves on, I can help the plant increase photosynthesis. So far I must say that, although considering PP is a notorious sturdy strain, she is quite vigorous and covered 33% in fast enlarging flowers, all with small or no internodes.
The flavour is still very pineapple-y, with an almost citrus peach undertone. very lovely.
The plant has now started to drink less: the coco medium is still visibly damp after 24 hours, may reduce watering to 1L a day.
