First time ever germinating seeds. Soaked in water for 12 hours and placed into pre-wetted happy frog potting soil and placed on the dinning room table. Once germinated, I moved under some cheap LED shop lights for a couple of weeks.
3/26/22 - Day 7 - Its been a week since germination. Not much to report on just yet, but things look like they are going well. Keeping the tops moist when they dry out and bottom watered 2 days ago just to make sure the roots are making their way down.
4/1/22 - Day 14 - I've been moving the plants outside in our hoophouse during the day to make sure they are use to the sunlight and bringing them back inside at night using the Horticulture light group 135 KIT. Currently have them set up for 16 hrs of sunlight/grow lights as I'm a bit worried about transplanting them outside and having them revert to flowing with the reduce light. So I'm keeping them close to the 14 +hrs of daylight that will be available to them when transplanting outside.
Its been a good two weeks in the solo cup and she's about ready to be transplanted up. Took a trip to Menards to buy a couple of 1 gallon pots as all I had were 5 gallon pots which I'll be using for the next potting up. Looks at her roots they are just started to wrap around the bottom of the cup so I think we are in a good spot. Since I was a beginner last year, I learned a little trick from one of the forums that you can place the smaller pot into the potting up container and fill the dirt around it to get the exact shape of the transplant. Its a great technique so I figured I'd share it incase any other newbs didn't know this. Anyways, when transplanting, I sprayed a bit of some pure protein 15-1-1 on the roots and the plant itself to try and help reduce any transplant shock. Was hoping to have some compost tea ready for this, but its to cold outside as it was snowing a bit earlier and the only alternative I would have is to brew it inside, but hearing the pump at night would drive me nuts.
4/8/22 - Day 21- Not much to report this week. Its been pretty rainy/cloudy and a bit cold (Low 40's) here so I haven't been moving them out into the hoophouse much this week. I expect her take of quite a bit this week so it will be interested to see what she looks like on the next update. Every Friday I try to give them a small sprits of 15-1-1 so I continued that ritual today. Hoping to get my orders in tomorrow at the grow store so I can get their homes prepped for going outside.
4/15/22 - Day 28 - We've had a few nice sunny days over the past week so I've been able to move the girls outside into the direct sunlight at times. Still getting some cool nights in the high 20's, but it looks like that should break by the end of the month when I planned on transplanting outside. In the meantime I trimmed off the first singular set of leaves and plan to top her at the 4th node once its a little more pronounced. Water schedule has been about once to maybe twice a week.
4/22/2022 - Day 35 - I was able to top her a couple of days ago and it seems like she took it like a champ. I've been hoping to transplant her outdoors soon, but temperatures around here have been all over the place. Highs in the 80's during some days and lows in the 20's at nights so I've been holding off. The end of next week may be my change to get them outside finally, but I still need to get their homes prepped.
I think I could of held off without up planting again, but I wasn't sure how long she'd stay in her 1 gallon pot due to the weather, so I decided to go ahead and put her in a 5 gallon pot with some foxfarms ocean forest potting soil.
Continue to give her a misting every Friday with 15-1-1 pure protein and I spray the roots a bit when transplanting.
I moved her from 16 hrs. to 14 hrs to make sure she's on line with the current day length. I've continued to throw them outside when possible otherwise I'll throw them back under the lights when its to cold or rainy outside.
4/29/22 - Day 42 - Was hoping to have these girls in by now, but mother nature had other ideas. I've been leaving the plants out in the hoophouse during the nights in hopes to get them used to some of the cold nights without any wind and she seems to be taking it well. Doesn't look like the nights will be dropping below 40 anymore *Cross fingers* so by the end of the week hopefully she'll be in the ground.
I'm a bit concerned about my planting location though. Its at the bottom of a slope on the farm which is known for getting wet in the spring. I've installed some french drains a few weeks ago in hopes of removing the water from the area and it seems to be working. Water table is still a bit high as you can see in one of the pictures, but it looks like I can go ~14" deep before hitting this water. Thinking I'll mound up the soil a bit to give it a little extra drying space.
Nothing special for feeding this week. Just watering when needed and of course 15-0-0 misting on Fridays.
5/08/22 - Day 51 - Not much to update on this week. Still haven't been able to get her into the ground. The hole I dug a few weeks ago filled to the top with water during some of the rain the past week so I've been holding off to see if it would drain as the rain starts to slow here. Fortunately it looks like its finally reseeding. I was on the fence deciding if I wanted to plant in 100 gal pots or not, but I think I should be good without. This weeks weather has changed drastically (high 70's/ low50's) so this week is my do or die day for in ground planting.
Plant is a bit droopy looking today as it spent most of the day outside in the sun. Past week its been in the hoophouse with the cold temps.
5/16/22 - Day 59 - She's finally in! I've been a bit hesitant putting her in the ground, but she's officially at her final destination. I plan on using these same holes from here on out so I dug out ~100 gallon worth of soil and backfilled with my own mixture. Once transplanted I started with some low stress training trying to get all the nodes some light. Bottom node I have coming out the third hole up, 2nd node the forth and so on. I was a bit worried about fert burn as I mixed up my soil a couple of days ago, but so far so good. Giving her a 15-1-1 and 0-0-17 misting every friday and a drench of compost tea every Saturday.
Soil recipe
-Canadian peat moss - 1 Bag (5 cu ft)
- Compost - 4 cu ft
-Perlite - 2 cu ft
Added amendments
Kelp Meal - 3 cups
Neem Meal - 3 cups
Crab Meal - 3 cups
Rock Dust - 3 cups
Gypsum - 1 cup
Oyster shell flour - 3 cups
Worm casting - 3 cups
Azomite - 2 cups
5/22/22 - Day 65 - Its been a crazy week with the weather. Temps have been in the high 80's when the average this time of year is 65 F. We had a crazy wind storm the other day where most of the plants had some wind damage and I just noticed tonight when taking pictures that I had a few small caterpillars on the leaves.
-Wind Damage - As we get into the growing season, I have a fence of willows that are finally getting filled out which will hopefully prevent this type of wind damage again. I just received a wind screen I ordered as well for privacy (lack of foliage in the front) which will also make a great wind break for this plants.
-Caterpillar - Don't seem to be doing to much damage yet. Found a few pin holes that they've been eating at. Sprayed the plants today with some Montery B.t which I'll repeat weekly.
- Feeding - Continue to mist the plants once a week with 15-1-1 pure protean and 0-0-17 seaweed then following up the following day with some compost tea (Boogie Base and Boogie Boost).
-LST - Once every day or 2 I'll adjust my strings towards the top of my originally branches and continue to stretch as planned. Twist the branches clock wise making sure the nodes on each branch are parallel so the sun reaches both sides.
5/29/22 - Day 72 - Its been a rainy these last couple of days. Didn't get a chance to brew any compost tea for this week as its been to wet to add anything. Same goes for my weekly Seaweed and protein spraying.
I'll probably start a patch of tea tomorrow so it can be applied on Tuesday and get another batch ready for the following Saturday.
- Growth - Growth seems to be going o.k. You can see a lot of the flower branches coming out of the top in these pictures. The bottom stems haven't poked out to much yet, but hopefully I can get them to stretch out soon as well.
6/04/22 - Day 78 - Weather was beautiful this week with the average in the high 80's. Plants were loving the sun and seem to be filling out now. I continued to stretch my original branches and the new flower branches are taking over the tops.
Not much else to report. I will point out that I did break one of the lower branches when I wasn't paying attention walking around the plants. Ended up tripping over the string and snapping off the tip of the branch. Shouldn't do much harm as its a lower branch, but I can probably take one of the branches growing from the node to stretch in its place.
06/12/22 - Day 86 - Week has been moderate temps hovering around 75 deg. Had a few days with over an inch of rain. Plant looks pretty health although the bottom doesn't seem to be keeping up with the upward growth.
I accidently topped a few of the top branches thinking it was time in my planning, but in doing so, maybe it will allow time for the bottom half to catch up. Added a scrog netting to help with bringing the flower branches up as well as allowing a little bit of support. Netting installed about hip height.
Fert - Spraying with pure protein and 0-0-15 seaweed every Friday and compost tea (boogie brew & boost) every Saturday.
6/20/22 - Day 94 - The heat of summer seems to have finally arrived. Most days were in the high 80's this week with a couple of days reaching into the 90's. Bottom portion of the plant finally seems to be reaching out catching up to the top.
One of the bottom branches that was broken off by accident now has a new node I'm using as its main branch which seems do be doing well. The branches that are being stretching are getting adjusted every 2-3 days when I can find the time to do it. Made another mistake on the other side of the plant. I was trying to stretch out the branch and wasn't patient enough as it was pretty stiff and ended up breaking off yet another branch.
Need to learn to be more relaxed when working with these girls.
Growth - Seems to be growing well. Will have to defoliate the bottom soon to allow better airflow
Feeding - pure protein 5-1-1 and 0-0-15 every 7 days but may adjust to every 4 days to make sure its eating enough. Boogie Brew & boost added every 7 days. Added boogie black frass this week which is usually done every 8 weeks.
Pests - Not to much pressure with pests but noticed a few damaged leaves on my other plants. Used Montery B.t again and hopefully will be able to remember to do it weekly.
6/26/20 - Day 100 - I'm a bit late adding last weeks photos, but I did capture them in time to make sure I updated accordingly.
Well its been pretty dry these last two weeks. Have only been watering when adding compost tea and I think you can see the results. Has only grown about 3 inches in the last week so I'll have to start watering more. I've been curious on why it hasn't bushed out as much as some of my other plants and I found the reason. One of the top nodes must of came loose a while ago and I never caught it so the branch has continued to grow upward and not out. I found it and strapped her down so we should see some results this coming week. Started to take a few leaves off the bottom off to get some better air flow for the upcoming August weather (Humid).
Growth - Slow with growth as its been dry and haven't watered at all. Will start to water at least twice a week now.
Feeding - Pure Protein 5-1-1 and 0-0-15 every 4 days now and compost tea (boogie brew & boost) every Friday/weekend
Pests - Haven't seen much pressure since applying some B.t because of caterpillars, but I'll continue applying for the next week or two.
7/19/22 - Day 123 - Sorry I've been a bit behind on my updates. With a new job and our Farm in full production its been a little hard to find some time to update. Haven't missed much the last two/three weeks for updates as not much has changed.
She is still growing strong as she's at a nice height of 81". I'm still a bit disappointed I wasn't able to get her to fill out more, but I made a few mistakes when training her, but what can you do. Started to water twice a week when possible and feeding her a tea still every Weekend with a continued foiler spray of Pure Protein and Seaweed powder. I've slowly been trimming the small branches on the inner area as well as removing some of the yellowing and dead leaves since I know she'll need all the airflow she can next month and it gets hot a humid here.
Growth - She seems to be taking to the extra watering I've been given her and I wouldn't mind if she actually started to slow down as she's starting to get big! :) No signs of deficiencies and haven't had much bug problem yet. Will probably have to keep a Bt spray on her once she starts to flower though.
Feeding - Twice a week of Pure Protein 5-1-1 and Sea weed powder 0-0-15 with a compost tea during the weekend.
Pests - So signs of any major issues right now. As she starts to flower I'll start to use B.t as the caterpillars got a little bad on last years grow.
7/25/22 - Day 129 - Not much to report today. Took a picture of the stalk today as the base of the stalk is about a soda can size which is pretty impressive compared to my first grow last year. Checking on my dates last year, I should start to see pistils starting to form within the next week or two. Would love to get another 2 weeks of veg, but we'll see. Continued my weekly feeding as usual but put an order in for some gaia green mineralized phosphate to start feeding once flowering starts and will act as my bud hardener.
7/31/22 - Day 135 - So far so good, but these are the easy weeks. She seems to be stretching so flowering is just around the corner. Weather hasn't been all to bad so far as we just got into a couple of days of high humidity (90%) which is normal around this time of year but the future forecast is calling for low 80's during the day and high 50's at night which is rare. Haven't had the chance to put any compost tea on her as its been raining during the days I planned on doing it and humid during the others. Will probably start shooting her with some amazing doctor zyme this coming week to deter any mildew as well as start to get a preventative for bud worms.
Work has kept me busy so I missed this week for measurements and updates. I'll make sure to update this coming weeks soon. No big updates, just waiting for flowering to take hold.
8/11/22 - Day 146 - Welp, Its official.
She she is finally 8' tall. I was hoping I'd be able to get her this tall, but I had my doubts. Weather has been cooperating lately as this past week and next will be in the 80 eights all week with limited rain. Should be some great growing weather espacilly being watered twice a week. I misted her with some Doctors Zymes early in the week as I wanted to make sure I'm preventing any bugs taking over especially being so close to starting to bed and making sure to stay on top of any mold forming. Finally able to give her another watering of compost tea as I havn't had time and the weather wasn't cooperating the last two weeks. Added some insect Frass to the tea as well to try and deter any insects and started to add some brix for flavor and trichome formation. Took a nice picture of the stalk today with a water bottle for scale.
8/22/22 - Day 157 - So I'm officially going to call it flowering time. Pistols are starting to show a white cap on the top so she's ready to go!
With that cue, I decided to start providing her some slower power with some Gaia Green Power Bloom(2-8-4) . I've been fighting with myself trying to decide what I wanted to use as a hardener (banana peel tea), but figured I'd make it easy on myself this year and went with a premade fertilizer instead. You can see I have a branch on the bottom that seems to be turning yellow. I had a few others on other plants doing the same so I thought adding a bit of Nitrogen would help. Taking a closer look at my other plants, it looks like there is a small ring around the stem. Looks like a dried out ring which is caused by grasshoppers munching on the plants. I found a couple of large grasshoppers (2") hanging around the branches so I'll have to figure out how to get rid of them. This plant however doesn't have those rings. I'm wondering if there was some damage caused by the wind or maybe I hit it when watering that caused it to crack or something. Will keep you posted for next week.
Fertilizer - Added 2 lbs of Gaia green ~(3 cups) Continue schedule of Compost tea (Boogie brew & Boogie Boost) and trying to hit them twice a week with Pure protein and Kelp foiler spray.
Weather - Temps have been pretty mild this year. Low 80's with little rain.
Pests - Grass Hoppers are munching on the branches. Probably pick them off and smash if the chickens don't take care of them.
8/27/22 - Day 162 Flowering seems to be well on its way and she looks to be in pretty good health. One of the lower branches that started to yellow completely fell off. Not sure if I damaged it while watering or I stretched it wrong causing it to grow wrong and break. Continued to spray Dr Zymes and B.T every week as a preventative which seems to be working well. No signs of Mildew yet, but it has been some nice weather this year and have only found one caterpillar on my other plants.
Pests - Have a few crickets causing some problems, but nothing major. Continue to spray B.T each week to prevent caterpillars and Dr Zymes to try and fight off any mildew
Fertilizer - Compost tea weekly. Have added some Brix as well at 1 tbsp per gallon which I'm told is suppose to help taste, deter insect (They hate high brix plants) as well as trich formation. Continue to foiler spray when possible with Pure protein and Kelp.
9/05/22 - Day 171- Not much to report this week. Been making sure to keep all the dead leaves out of the middle to try and help prevent any mildew. Weather has been pretty decent staying in the low 80's with little to no rain. The lower part of the plant that was yellowing up a few weeks ago seems to be doing a bit better after putting on the gaia green. Flowers seem to be budding up pretty well and lets hope the weather continues to cooperate.
Fertilizer - Boogie brew with boogie boost. Adding brix with every compost feeding as well.
Pests - None at this moment. Continue to use Dr Zyme and B.T as a preventative.
9/16/22 - Day 184 - Weather has been amazing these last few weeks. Temps have been in the mid 80's and nights in the 60's. We did have a few mornings though that had some heavy fog which ended up causing some powdery mildew on some of her leaves. It was easily treated with Dr. Zymes and everything looks like it's been cleared up and she's back to her old self. I did buy an electric leaf blower from EGO that I've been using every morning to clear off any built up dew on the leaves to try and prevent any rot in the buds. Continued spraying her with B.T and Dr Zymes as a preventative and so far so good. Weather Takes a major dip next week with Highs in the 60's and some possible rain storms moving in, so I'll have to be vigilant blowing off those leaves after each rain.
Fertilizer - Continued with use compost tea every week as well as adding Brix to improve taste and increase trichs.
Pests- No major pest since the B.T treatment and Dr Zymes seems to be taking care of everything.
