I soaked the seeds for about 18 hours. I planted about a knuckle deep in expanded peat pellets with Endomycorrhiza. The peat pellets are sitting on a tray of perlite. Each transplant up to and including the final container will be placed on perlite, creating a sub irrigation planter of sorts. Nice that both seeeds came up within 24 hours of each other, although the BB is just barely up. This will be my first time growing these strains.
Update: After 48 hours with no change, the BB is not growing. I have started soaking a second seed.
The DP seedling is growing well. 1 week from seed and working on leaf set #3. There were roots growing out of the bottom of the peat pod, so she is in a quart container. 1 scoop of composted super soil followed by a 50/50 mix of Fox Farms Happy Frog and perlite. I plan on using the ScrOG grow method and will be topping as soon as I see leaf set #5.
It’s been 4 days since I planted the Blueberry seed and still nothing.
I’ve started adding a capful of hydrogen peroxide to the water to counteract the green on the perlite
The Blueberry seed never germinated and I don’t want to grow 2 at different stages, so only 1 plant this grow.
The Durban Poison seedling is still growing well. The 5th leaf set has appeared and I topped as soon as I knew I could remove it all. The goal is to have the plant begin branching as early as possible. The leaves had grown past the pot sides, so I potted her on to a 1 gallon pot with a 60/40 mix of composted super soil and perlite. I will top water for a day or 2 then only water from the bottom.
Update: 3 days after topping and she is growing strong, lots of secondary growth. I have put a small fan in the tent to rustle the leaves and encourage transpiration.
3 weeks from seed and she’s working hard on secondary growth. As soon as the new growth tips are long enough, I will start bending them down, I am hoping to keep the plant short. The leaves are growing past the pot sides, it is almost time for the final transplant.
The final container will be a milk crate lined with landscaping fabric. Keeps the soil mix contained but allows for plenty of oxygen to the roots.
I have prepared the screen, made from pvc pipe. I screwed eye hooks along each side to run garden string.
Update: Lowered light to 20 inches and top watered with SEA90 and silica.
Day 27 The tops have grown long enough to be tied down. I tied both the top and second leaf sets.
Day 28 & 29 I moved the ties out farther on each branch each day, as needed
Day 30 Moving Day is here! The roots are growing into the perlite, she is very ready for a larger home. The milk crate lined with landscaping fabric is ready, I added Mycorrhizae and prepared the perlite sub irrigation tub.
Some of the roots were left behind in the perlite, hopefully she’ll be ok, but now she’s in her new pot and under the screen.
I have centered her under both lights, hopefully the increased light will spur her on to growing. I top watered with silica and sea90 and also bottom watered to wet the perlite.
Day 31 New growth this morning, no stress from transplant. Time for the second and final topping. I pinched out the middle set of leaves growing from each of the 4 main arms. This should double the available branches to spread out under the screen. Now we wait for her to grow. I will check daily, any branches that get too tall will get tucked and encouraged to move outward. As soon as she fills 2/3 of the screen I can flip to flower.
There hasn’t been much change this week. Some new growth, but it’s slower than I had expected for this variety. I also noticed a slight twist to some of the leaves. I suspected root stress. There had been some loosening up of the rootball during transplanting due to the high percentage of perlite and I hoped it would be ok, but maybe not.
I let the soil dry out for a day then stuck my knuckle in to see. I discovered a few small voids in the soil, I’ve added new soil and lightly pressed it all down. I watered her in, hopefully I fixed it.
The growth continues to be slow, but she definitely seems better. I’ve lowered the screen right down to make the training easier. I will need to check everyday so I can tuck and shift as necessary.
I topdressed with kelp to help the roots recover faster. I am confused about why she hasn’t started regrowing where I pinched the second time. I speculate the cause is the root stress. I am hoping we are past that. She still isn’t drinking a lot of water, but it is increasing😊
She finally has started exploding, I’ve been bending and tucking everyday. I got a little too aggressive and one of the main tops broke. I taped it back since it wasn’t completely severed, but a few hours later it was wilted and I knew it wouldn’t work. I recut the end and trimmed some leaves then put the cutting in water. Since it was 3 full nodes and 1 just started, I really want to save it. I will put it in my Areogarden and hope it roots. I will need the AG for the other cuttings I will take in a few weeks.
She didn’t grow as big as I’d hoped, but I still have a schedule to keep. She showed her first pistils, so she’s officially a girl! Today will be the first 12 hours of dark, she may be slow to show the change to flower since she’s only just shown maturity. Since the plant is so small, I’ll only do a light topdress in the next couple of days, there should be a decent amount of nutrients left in the mix.
I can’t wait to see how much she stretches!
After a week of 12 hours dark, she is starting to shift growth patterns and there is more secondary growth. Every morning at lights on I tuck and shift. The last day before switching to 12/12, she filled approximately 20 squares. After a week, she fills approximately 35. I hope to get a good stretch to fill as many squares as possible.
I cut the lowest 2 branches as they were not getting any light. One was only an inch long , the other about 2 1/2 inches. I put the larger of the 2 in the Aerogarden with the broken top. I added composted supersoil to the pot, burying the stem to the cotyledons, and watered it in.
She is behaving as expected, which is wonderful! Tucking and shifting daily brings her to 48 squares. The lowers are reaching up and getting bigger. Budlets are exploding all over, I expect the stretch to slow down soon. Water intake is up as well.
Third week of flowering and it appears that the stretch period is over. No more tucking and shifting. The buds are building and filling in. I’ve noticed some nice purpling which is quite pretty. Occasionally there is a slight smell, but only close up to the buds or if I bump one. I topdressed with a mix of worm castings and perlite. That will hopefully be the last feeding, water only from here out.
The broken tip and cutting have both rooted, took 10 days and 12 days respectively. After spending a week growing roots, they are now both in pots with soil mix.
End of Week 4 and things are ok. The buds are building, but not as fast as I’d hoped. Some of the earliest leaves are starting to yellow. It’s time to clean up under the screen.
Water consumption is pretty steady. Smell is increasing some, but still not enough for carbon filter.
End of week 5 of flowering and the leaves are definitely yellowing more than they should. When I looked closer I realized the center stem has started to split. Normally the plant lifts the screen up and it’s not a problem, but this grow I am using a small fan that is attached to the screen. I think it’s weight was just enough to keep the screen solidly in place. I have propped the screen up on blocks about 2 inches higher, it relieved some pressure. I zip tied and taped the stem, hopefully that will allow the plant to still get nutrients to the buds. This grow has been just one little thing after another and I don’t have high expectations. Thankfully I have a cutting that rooted and I can regrow these genetics.
The smell is increasing some and is quite lovely!
End of week 6 and she’s doing decently. Quite a few leaves have turned yellow and fallen off, but the buds still look nice. The sugar leaves are still nice and green, the pistils are all white and standing up, so I’m not too worried. The buds are not very big, but are still plumping up, there’s still time.
End of week 7 and things are still ok. There are a lot less leaves, the yellowing has spread, but still not affecting the sugar leaves. Buds are still getting fatter, pistils are still standing up, but some have started to turn brown. The stem split has not progressed further, the zip tie seems to be holding everything in place, but it dried out instead of healing. I’ll look at trichomes next week.
End of week 8 and things are progressing as expected, thank goodness! Given all the things that have not been great with the early stages of the grow, she is finishing up nicely. The wave of browning pistils has passed with a flush of new white pistils and the buds all seem plumper. Water consumption is still steady, I’ll be watching this closely over the next week. Under magnification, the trichomes on the buds are still too clear, but we are getting nearer to harvest day 😁
End of week 9 and she’s still going strong! There’s been another wave of white pistils and plumping followed by browning, but not as many as last time. Water consumption is still unchanged, leaves are continuing to yellow and drop off, but there aren’t many left. Sugar leaves still unaffected, I’m watching closely for that. I cut a small bud from just under the screen to look at under magnification. The buds are very purple! I couldn’t get a great picture of the trichomes, I’ll keep trying, but there’s still too many clear for my taste. The smell is very weak when the plant is undisturbed, but very nice when I bump it. There’s a good chance I’ll be chopping within the next week, but we shall see 😬
Day 69 from switch to 12/12 lighting and it’s chop day. Very few new pistils have formed and the brown ones are wilting. The trichomes on the buds are mostly cloudy with a few ambers, while the leaves look very amber. (Sorry about the quality of the pictures, still working on it )
I’m taking a completely different approach this time. My ambient humidity this time of year is low 40s on average. I’d like the plant to take longer to dry, so I cut the plant and hung the whole thing upside down. I only removed the larger fan leaves, anything with an obvious petiole. I’m leaving the rest to dry, then I’ll trim before I jar it up.
I will post a harvest report after, thanks for following along 😘
Durban poison is a nice smoke! Very sticky, sparkly buds that smell citrusy and sweet when ground up. Earthy and peppery when smoked, they leave a bit of dank sweetness behind.
Be warned that the first few hits will surprise you with their intensity.
The high brings about a feeling of extra in all the senses, for example things around you are extra loud, extra bright or extra smelly. If not prepared, there could be a little jittery feeling that can cause paranoid feelings momentarily. It then settles into a clear and energetic buzz that makes tasks and chores more easily accomplished. As the high wears off, there’s no crash, just a leveling off. Definitely a daytime smoke, I highly recommend it! I am going to grow it again and see if I can cause less problems this time. 👍
Overalls, I’m pretty happy with how this grow turned out. I made some mistakes, but I’m hoping to learn from them and get better. In the jars I have almost 3 oz of buds to smoke and I can’t complain too much about that 😬
Funny to see a FIM fail, indoors. Outdoors I protect the fimm’d node by taping the branch, right beneath the FIM.
Only makes sense when indoors, your Loading the Branches with Huge frickin budz!!!!! Joking of course. Super nice grow. Glad you met Durban Poison. True champion
There are some real nice crosses that have been made with Durban Poison. It’ll be great every time you return to it. Have a great Cure. Lock some up for 90 days! You’ll be surprised.
Cheers
@trerevilo, Thanks 😊 the high lasts 2 or 3 hours now that it’s cured for several weeks. I tend to have only a few puffs at a time though, it’s kinda strong. I’m liking it more and more!
