This is my first BF seed and first time I'm trying living soil. I used Gaia Green Organics All-purpose, coco, sphagnum peat, perlite, worm castings, marine compost, peletized lime, chicken manure, and some kelp to make the soil and it sat for about 2 weeks.
For the GZ germination I did 24h in water, then paper towel for ~48h, then into the soil. For the kosher cake seed I tried 24 hours in water and then right into the soil.
Transplant was wonky, probably stressed her out a bit. New leaves aren't coming in as well as the first ones. No idea how fertile the soil is, but the roots looked great. I'll put some clover on top next week.
I put the kosher cake plant under the light this week and she seems happy so far.
I watered once this week, about 5L
Watered 1L Monday to keep the soil moist
Transplanted the kosher cake friday. The transplant was really bad.
Haven't really been watering this week just trying to keep the top moist. Temp and humidity came down this week as autumn is near.
They're really growing well now. Topped and started training the GZ this week. I've been spraying the top of the soil and watering a bit every day now to keep the soil moist. Clover is coming in nicely.
The leaves of the GZ are coming in a bit strange I think, but I'm not sure. She's started producing some long white hairs so I guess my veg time is just about up. Man, autos are wild.
We lost power for about 16 hours from the 23rd to 24th, hopefully they aren't too bothered. Got them on 24h light for a bit to recover the lost hours.
It was unexpectedly warm on the 25th and the tent was 30° so they're probably not very pleased.
I'll be tying her down to the screen every couple of days. I only have the one light so it'll be tight but manageable and still have a great yield (let's hope). I put the clover in with the kosher cake today, maybe a bit later than I should have, I was being lazy.
I switched to 24h light late last week due to a power outage with the hope of regaining lost time. I'll probably put her back on 20 after this week, but she is happy so perhaps this is the way.
Tied the GZ to the net Tuesday, she looks pretty great. Trimmed her Wednesday night. I didn't take off that much, just some of the larger fan leaves in the middle that were blocking light to the bottom. Trimmed a bit more off Friday morning and trimmed the kosher cake as well.
I noticed last night that the pots are really heavy so I think I may have been watering too much. I've stopped watering every day but I still try to mist it to keep the top of the soil moist.
Added top dressing and watered about 1.5L on October 2nd, Gaia Green power bloom mixed with a couple handfuls of worm castings and a bit of Gaia Green all purpose. I'll do the same for the cake next week.
Added top dressing of Gaia Green power bloom and earth castings and a bit of GG all purpose Sunday. The GZ is looking excellent, added a few more ties and trimmed a bit Monday.
My efforts of tying her were unsuccessful, she grew too tall and has some heat stress on the top from the light. She's a strong plant so hopefully it won't be too much of an issue, but definitely something to pay more attention to next time.
I turned the lights off for a couple of hours Thursday morning and rose it another few centimeters to try to ease some stress. Some more light defoliation as well.
Added top dressing to the kosher cake Monday. I haven't been watering them as much but when I lifted the pots Monday they were quite light so I gave them a couple of litres each.
Another half a litre on water on Tuesday, still misting. I took the first pictures of flowers today, the heat stress on the GZ is very apparent. feelsbadman. I really should've caught that earlier. Oh well, she's still healthy.
Wednesday morning when I was taking pictures and looking at them I noticed the smell is starting to get stronger, they'll be really stinky in another week or two.
Watered again Thursday morning, about 2-3 litres each. They're drying out pretty quickly now, I'll probably start giving them water daily again.
Defoliated Thursday morning and turned the light off for 4 hours. The KC is fine but the GZ still hasn't fully recovered from her stress last week so I wanted to give her some time in the dark.
Saturday I turned the lights back to 20/4. Heat stress still apparent so I raised the lights another 5cm or so. Added a couple tablespoons of kelp to help recpvery
KC buds are looking better than the GZ ones now, though obviously there are fewer. The GZ buds look really tiny, I'm not sure if it was stress or if she needs more food or what. Oh well.
Defoliated quite a bit again Monday, maybe for the last time. I definitely get the feeling I've been doing it too often on the GZ which would have contributed to the stunted growth. She has tons of small fan leaves whereas the KC has plenty of large ones. I was hoping to defoliate lightly and often to avoid stressing, but that may have been a mistake.
I've avoided defoilating for the rest of the week, on Sunday added another 6 tablespoons of power bloom into about a gallon of soil and added it to the top of each plant. I added some more clover as well as most of the cover crop was depleted. I probably should have done all of this a week or two ago when I added the flowering top dressing. KC looks great but small, GZ has lots of flowers but looks stretched and may not provide good buds.
They've started to produce some sugars and are smelling pretty good now. I am skeptical that they will actually be ready after 9 weeks but here's hoping.
The KC is really beefing up, smelling and is very sticky. I defoliated her again on 25/10. I've been hesitant to get in there much with the GZ as she still looks annoyed and the leaves aren't super big yet.
They're doing well, not much to say, just waiting for the flowers to plump up. One thing I regret is how much shorter the KC is than the GZ. Maybe I'll get a little platform for it to be closer to the light.
Lot of flies this week, seems like I'm watering too much. Normally I would only water every 4 or 5 days but with the living soil I thought it needed to be moist always. Turns out I should be watering from the bottom more often than top, then the top can dry off to prevent the bugs but the middle and bottom are always moist so everything stays alive.
GZ fan leaves all have yellow tips now, hopefully just because she's getting old :)
Watering from the bottom is going well. Flies are almost completely gone now as well.
The GZ is starting to yellow and I want to defoliate, but I'm worried about stressing her out this far in. She's probably got another 2 weeks or so to go so maybe I'll give it a shot.
Ended up defoliating Monday night, she's looking better now. Hopefully didn't stress her too much.
Watered about 2L each Wednesday morning. The GZ really exploded this week, super happy.
Watered again Saturday evening, about 2.5L each. Bought some sticky traps to help with the rest of the flies as well.
They're looking and smelling fantastic, I'm quite happy with them. These past two weeks have been really impressive, autos beef up so quickly! The GZ is amazing, but the KC is getting really thick now and without doing any training, she's doing a lot better than I expected.
It looks like I'll be chopping the Kosher Cake this weekend! Starting to see some amber trichomes now and the buds are looking thick and sugary. The GZ still has another week or so to go, I expect the heat stress and topping contributed to her slower growth.
The Kosher Cake is certainly ready, I probably should have cut her down on the weekend. I still don't see any amber trichomes on the GZ but I'm sure this will be the final week for her as well. Looks like she'll have 2, maybe 3 ounces which is pretty good for me. I'm excited to do better next time using this journal as a reference.
Harvested the KC on Tuesday so the GZ has the tent all to herself now. I imagine she'll be coming down this weekend.
It was a pretty decent strain that probably would have done a lot better if I had trained it. It was pretty fast, but the yield probably suffers from such a quick flowering period. The buds aren't very dense at all. Maybe I should have left it up longer but it was pretty done.
It was super bushy - I don't usually grow indicas and was surprised how long it took to trim. I didn't do super heavy defoliation so perhaps that's something to look out for next time.
I didn't bother weighing it wet, that doesn't make any sense to me, but after drying for 4 days or so, the scale reads 58.5g - a bit over 2 ounces. I'm pretty surprised and happy with that, usually I'm happy with 1oz/plant.
In total, it was 78 days sprout to harvest.
