I'm excited for my first 2023 grow, and first indoor grow since this time last year. I've always been a fan of Jack Herer and happy to be finally growing my own. Also my first time growing Fast Buds. After she germinated (which took ~48 hours) I put in her some Fox Farm Happy frog soil with Mykos mycorrhizal inoculant mixed in, in a 4" pot on Jan 26. She sprouted Jan 29. I turned the lights down to 2/3 power and at a height of ~24 inches.
She's doing fine, just feeding her plain pH6 water whenever she needs it. I decided to just have one plant in the tent this grow since the tent is only 2x2. Last time I grew in the tent I had 4 plants and it was pretty crowded. Plus I didn't prune much since it was only my second grow and I didn't know what I was doing. So this Jack has plenty of space to stretch.
She's a cute lil thang 💚
She's growing at a good pace... Her biggest leaves are wilting a little I may have over watered a bit so I'm laying back on that til she's thirsty. I'll transplant to a five gallon pot in a few days or next week.
I transplanted her on Feb 12 into a five gallon pot. It went well. Her root system is looking strong. In the top few inches of the pot I have happy frog soil and the rest below is ocean forest. I added a dusting of mycorrhizal inoculant where the plant went in. She's recovering well. I started her on some grow big and big bloom nutes from Fox farm. Later this week once she's fully recovered I'll start with some LST.
It's been a good week, I did some leaf tucking and readjusted the tie down and that's it.every other feeding I give her some Big Bloom and Grow Big. She is definitely bushing out.
Feb 24 She's starting off her fifth week strong. I flushed her yesterday since she should be in preflowering this week. I did it outside and noticed a fly land on her, so I put a couple of sticky fly traps in the tent just to be safe. I'm not doing a lot of LST mostly leaf tucking and a couple branches weighted down with luggage locks.
March 2 end of week 5 she literally doubled in height from 8.5" to 17".
I gave her a heavy pruning/defoliation today in the lower branches, and then turned off the lights early so she could recover with 9 hours darkness instead of the usual 4.
Day 36: I gave her a heavy pruning a couple of days ago and she's taken it well. I did a bit more this evening. Also I weighed down the main cola with a luggage lock to make it lower than the next lower stalk.
I found some sort of bug in the tent, which was a risk since I'm talking my four smaller plants in and out of the tent... So I added a third sticky fly trap.
Day 39: I'm a little surprised she's still barely showing any pistils. But then this is my first Fast Buds grow; when I grew Humboldt Seed Co Mint Jelly last year each time they'd start showing signs of flowering before the fourth week. Probably the pruning from a few days ago has slowed her down a little. But she's still looking vigorous and healthy.
I'm watering her every day, 9 cups of water, with nutrients every other feeding. I've phased out the veg nutes and phasing in the bud nutes.
She's really filling up my little 2x2 tent, so I'm glad I decided to just do one this time. Previous grows in this tent I tried to cram too many plants in there. Someday I'll get a bigger tent.
Week 7 is going well so far. She's taking more water, developing the buds, fully recovered from the defoliation.
On day 39 I added a little soil to top her off, I saw a few small exposed roots after the soil settled. Giving her two tsp Fox farm bud nutes every other feeding.
Her vertical growth has definitely slowed down and now she's focused on growing those little buds out... Into giant fat ones hopefully!
She got some nute burn because I didn't flush her as soon as I should have. So I took her outside and flushed, noticed the water was draining slowly but not much I can do about that at this point. Overall she still looks pretty healthy.
Buds are starting to fatten up. I'm wishing I had a bigger tent, she is smushed in on all sides.
Day 61: The top buds are only about 10" from the light, but I'm not seeing any burn from that so I'm not going to worry about that. The light is as high up as it will go.
I pinched a bud to smell and it was nice and pungent and citrusy.
I watered with nutes for the last time; I think she has another 1-2 weeks or so before harvest , so I'll flush her next time and just plain pH water after that.
The top buds seemed ready to harvest but the lower buds still needed to mature a bit more. So I did a partial harvest on Day 68. Second harvest was Day 73. the staged harvest is an interesting harvest method and is really like a type of HST, getting light to the lower buds at the very end of the grow, rather than during veg or flower stage.
Th man stem at base was about 1" in diameter, and the buds for the second stage harvest were all 20-24" tall.
I'll update with more pictures in the coming days of the drying tent.
Thanks for stopping by!
