It was pretty chilly some nights so I brought them in to stay in the grow tent nights and chilly days. The tent was filled with my one big Jack herer (The Deathless Horsie) but I crammed the little 4" pots in the corners.
I transplanted them on day 26 from 4" pots to 12" pots. The bottom half of the pots are Ocean Forest soil and the top half is Happy Frog. I added some mycorrhizal inoculant just before plopping them in.
So, I was totally focused on not screwing up the transplant and FORGOT to track which plant was which, and now the Jacks and the Bruces are mixed up. Not a huge deal but for the moment it's impossible to differentiate. In a few weeks it should be apparent which are the Bruces since they should be bigger than the Jacks. I do know that as of today, the two biggest plants are one Jack and one Bruce.
I decided not to grow these plants as big as possible, since it's a stealth grow, so that's why I'm not using 5-gallon pots this time. Also they'll be easier to move around.
I'll be topping them soon for the same reason: not looking for the tallest colas, happy to sacrifice that for a bunch of shorter ones.
The pots are covered with chicken wire to prevent the squirrels and chipmunks from digging holes in the soil, and the fly traps have worked well so far.
They range in height from 6" to 8", on day 26.
Update: I topped all 4 this morning since they took the transplanting so well.
They had a rough week last week, with the transplanting and topping, a few cold nights in the low 40s, and some nutrient burn from the Fox Farm Ocean Forest. I should have been more careful with the ocean forest. Next grow I'll use something different. Anyway they came out of the week looking ok, maybe a little delayed growth except for Bruce #1 which is the biggest. Bugs haven't been a problem yet but I'm checking every day.
I decided, after losing track of which strain was which during transplanting, that the two bigger ones are the Bruces since BB is known for size and production and hardiness. So I labeled them B1, B2, J1 and J2.
Day 77 their buds are fattening up especially the Bruces, and the Bruces have more trichomes too. But all four are progressing well, I figure I'll harvest in about a week. My vigilance with fly paper has paid off, no real leaf or bud damage to speak of. Some wrens have been hanging around the pots getting flies and other bugs which is cool. All four plants were stunted early on the the transplant, topping and cold weather (40s F at night a lot of nights). They'll be fine, but I'm not expecting a big yield this time. I'll do another Bruce my next grow and not do topping or transplanting.
I am super impressed with FB's Bruce Banner. Great outdoor strain as advertised, very hardy. It endured a lot including cold weather, topping, transplanting, an attack by my cat (the little bastard), and of course was under constant attack by whiteflies, aphids etc. They were stunted early on but otherwise did great. Beautiful structure to the plants, with the leaves reaching upwards. These grew next to my two Jack Herers and I was struck by how frosty the Bruces got compared with the Jacks, which was expected. Can't wait to smoke the finished product. Will definitely be growing again soon.
The harvest was easy this time since the plants were stunted. I had been out of town a few days and the bugs got into one of the buds on Bruce #1. They ate a couple of calyxes but that was it. I'll update after drying, with the weight etc.
Final dry weight for the two Bruces was 21.7 grams, way less than hoped for but that's ok, it'll be better next time.
This was my first try grow Jack outdoors. They got stunted early on when I transplanted and topped them, also the cold weather held them down a bit. But they got through early setbacks and stayed small but healthy the rest of the grow. It's a beautiful plant with more sativa-like thin leaves. It's not frosty with trichomes but that's to be expected since Jack is not bred to be super strong THC-wise. It's more of an old fashioned smoke which I love, it doesn't knock you on your ass.
Harvesting was easy since both plants were small. I'll update with weight when the buds are dried.
I tried to update with dry weight but GD isn't letting me yet... I made up the wet weight of 38 grams, but the actual dry weight is 19.1 grams for the 2 plants. Low yield, but again, that's due to the cold weather, topping and transplanting. But hey it's still good smoking and home grown so I'll always be happy with that.
Oui mon pote on ne transplanté pas une auto et pour faire du topping sur une autofloraissante, choisi une variété qui a une grande structure (exemple cheese auto) 👍👌 tu as fais du beau boulot !!
