As with most crosses with Bubba in it an heavy defoliation was needed - water isn't scarce in our conditions, and my plants always react well to it.
They didn't stretch much but the overall vigor was quite impressive for an indica. The smell are somewhat sweet and coffeeish for the broad leave one, and more chlorophyllic with a touch of freshness for the skunky one. I said skunky but it was displaying webbed leaved at first, like the duckfoot, and that without being a runt, hence the clone session. Plus the lights and some equipment made me poor.
Edit : the pre flowering is over, the ec has been lowered by 0.2 a day to 1.85.
Hello and thank you for taking the time to read. Sorry if my grammar is wack sometimes, English is not my first language.
Nothing much to say except that, it grows lol, and i'm already starting to think about how i'm gonna feed my plants later.
My thinking is : i do know that plants take nutrients at a different uptake, so my tank will be unbalanced soon. Apriori low in N and micros in excess. I also know that P and K are way overlooked for the yield. Like, for me, the Ca to K ratio with these plants under this lighting looks much closer to 1:1 than 1:2.
So, if i add only calnit - sadly i don't have any calcium sulphate and my goal was to do the cheapest grow possible - with epsom salts and a low dose of P and K, i should get a good nutrition for the last 3 weeks, with the smoothest smoke possible and without any loss of terpenes or cannabinoids. And still get a good brix value - hence the K.
I'll maybe lower the ec from 0.1 this week. It's rock stable but i feel that i could feed them a bit lower.
I cut a lot of leaves over the past 3 week, maybe 3 lbs, that's ridiculous. I like to grow buds, not leaves! I won't touch them much anymore, a few leaves from time to time and a big defoliation at week 4 or 5, and maybe another one later upon the growing conditions, i'll see.
The smell in the tent is nice, something skunky - i assume the double serration pheno - hashy with a minty freshness, i do like it. And it's not overpowering too, those are plants friendly to the grower.
See you next week!
Hello and thank you for taking the time to read me.
I made a mistake, i lowered the ec, defoliated then added too much K - the lush foliage with twisted sugar leaves - thinking that it would force the plant to use any N in excess. But it increased the need of the plant on the left for Ca while her sister is showing N sensitivity at the same time. And the low ec just made her short in micros - the pale sugar leaves on the right.
Instead i should have just kept a much lower VPD and ditched the K.
Also idk if it's related, i don't think so but i can't be sure. The plant on the right may be the smallest producer that i ever came across. The 2 first sets of leaves were fully webbed, it also barely roots, i shouldn't be surprised after all. But still, i'm not very happy with that.
About the smell ; it starts to become stronger but manageable. The plant on the left smells like sugar, skunk sausage and hash, and her sis is more citric, creamy and kush. It will probably keep changing a lot anyway. The trichomes coverage is nice, even the stems are sticky. And they finally start to stop growing that many leaves, i'll be cautious from now on.
See you next week!
Hello and thank you for taking the time to read these elucubrations.
This is a good example of why i only grow 1 strain ; the plant on the left has clearly the pine cone buds from the og, along with a structure inherited from the critical and with bubba leaves in veg. So it'd be safe to say that she has a kush phenotype then.
While the other one has a cookie structure, trichome coverage and yield... But although they are sisters, she should be by 1 week faster than the kushy one and, furthermore, both have different nutritional needs inherited from their ancestors, it's really obvious with them.
The kush craves for Ca and the cookie is Ca and N sensitive.
Hence the slight iron def on the right but there is not much that i can do about it, and i couldn't have dropped the calcium earlier because of the kushy plant.
About the plants, i cut off a few leaves 2 days ago. I also tried to avoid leaves with trichomes on it. And they are extra sticky. To the point that i had the "trimmer's nails" - if it makes any sense - after just defoliating them. This strain is definitely a resin producer.
The plant on the left may be a small yielder but she might compensate it for extractions, even the petiole are smokable material - cf the picture. I don't think i ever saw that but i also tend to forget how old my plants are.
(she somewhat remind me of a "the white x 88 g13 hp" that i grew years ago)
I'm happily surprised by the smell! The kushy one smells like skunk, hash, cream and mint while her sis has a pungent citric smell along with cream, kush and gas. The kushy one was even smelling like cheese the other day.
I'm gonna mostly top my reservoir with ro water until the harvest in more or less 3 weeks. I think that this way, the senescence should be fine on the left, and i'm not so sure about the other one buf if it ends up in extraction anyway...
See you next week!
Hello and thank you for taking the time to read me.
The smells are getting stronger. Trichomes are also starting to show themselves, i like these plants. The one on the left still smell something skunk kush while her sis is on the citric side, still with kush - to me kush stands for something piney, earthy with gas.
The iron def is definitely a pity, i'm a bit afraid too about the cannabinoid yield but it may not be related to too much Ca after all. Most EU fertilizers are designed to be used with tap water, i use RO water and can lack calcium or iron... Seems pretty clear to me. it's only my second grow with those, the next one will be better.
About the yield ; i like the plant on the left, especially with the skunk smell, i've been after that since a while to say the least. But, i do love a lot the look of the other one and it's also a frost machine, i think i might be able to make her a decent yielder with a proper nutrition and, above all, a LOT of training and lolloping. I might run them again.
Also i'll harvest 1 week later than expected, in 3 weeks from now ; the plant on the left is still throwing new pistils and her buds need obviously more time. And i might get a "good" senescence / yield with 3 week of leeching - the iron def kinda ruined it all but i'll see.
See you next week!
Hello and thank you for taking the time to read me.
When i open the tent today i saw mold... There is always something lol. Argh.
I use an automated step transformer for the humidity and the temp, and the plants were handling it quite well so i though that, for a week a 2, it would be fine without the AC. Wrong. Also it's never just one cola in my experience, botrytis is systemic but there's nothing that i can do about it...
The "good" thing is that i'll be able to sample some, i was curious about the potency. But still. Yikes.
Otherwise the smells are really nice and strong, the kushy plant smells like skunk, pine and gas and her sis smells like lemon but not sour, cream and hints of kush.
Trichomes coverage and yields seems good too. Possibly a commercial strain. Also i'm just topping my reservoir with RO water, my goal at the harvest will be to dump the least possible amount of fertilizer down the drain, when one think about it it's a bit crazy how much we can pollute just with indoor growing.
See you next week!
Hello and thank you for taking the time to read me.
This is gonna be the last update before the harvest in a week and half, or so. I don't see the point of doing 2 that close, i'm not doing much anymore nor i have much to say.
The plant on the left would have needed a different feeding too, she was still bulking up until very recently, and i started from clones. This pheno and under these growing conditions should be close to 70 - 77 days. I could chop her sis this week but the smoke would, imo, still be too harsh.
About the smells ; nothing much to say except that it now stinks. It didn't change much over the last weeks. The kushy plant now smells like skunk, lemon and gas while the cookie pheno smells like lemon, cream and hints of kush.
I can't manage the ph anymore, it drops from 2 points every day. I tried adding calcium (there must be carbonate in mine) but it didn't change anything so i just let the plant empty the reservoir, then i'll top it today or tomorrow with a lot of RO then give up on the ph, it should be below 0.5.
Or i might just top it with tap water. Although I did a few grow for comparison and even if the conductivity here isn't bad, i always had better results elsewhere. But the Ca def, then the iron def, then again a small Ca def on the left plus now the ph swinging, i might just get less headache by using the simple faucet...
And in a week or two, i can't be sure of it tho, the chelate levels in my solution should be low enough to be safely dumped in the tub.
See you at the harvest!
(I'm debating with myself if i should use the tumble trimmer or not. On 1 side, i suck at it and i don't want to spend a week trimming, on the other one, it would def be a pity with this bag appeal.)
Hello and thank you for taking the time to read me ; especially for those who read me over the weeks, i tried to make it worth your time with what i can imagine to be useful thoughts / information.
Also sorry for the super late update, i've been busy and lazy and i harvested in 3 times, the last one was last week. And for the quality of the pictures too, i "learned" - not really - how to use my camera with this diary.
It didn't take me that long with the trimmer, in total 6h and i take my time, also i always cut the tip - or more - to get only valuable trim so it could be much shorter for someone else.
About the plants. It was super leafy but not in a bad way for the biscotti pheno, all the trim is covered in trichome, i barely put anything in the bin. The kushy pheno yields slightly more buds but with much less trim, i liked it less.
I found a few bananas / immature seeds on a biscotti pheno but as stated before i harvested super late. They didn't throw anything with temp higher than 30c so i wouldn't say that they are sensitive.
The mold didn't progress at all on the kushy plant, i only lost 1 cola and i didn't change anything except cutting it - late, the previous update. I don't really know what to think about that.
The yield. I probably already smoked a few dozen grams, it's been 3 week and i smoke a lot. I also harvested grosso modo the same quantity in trim / popcorn than buds so i'm pretty happy with the yield. I've seen better but the cookie pheno can taste like lime soda or lemon sorbet...
About my reservoir experiment ; i couldn't go lower than 0.7, no matter how much ro water i put in so it's safe to assume that it was mostly ballast salt - sodium or something - at the end. And it didn't taste harsh, just a bit heavy on the head. So, with my conditions, draining it at 1.0 with a short flush could have also produced a great smoke 2/3 week ago. Also even at the end, plants can still select what they eat. I'm less and less sure about the pertinence of the npk ratio in drain to waste with 0 cec.
All that you see is all i put in! If somebody want to try it at home, we all use different nutes / water, when the pH becomes really wild it's safe to drain.
See you soon for the harvest - i already did it but i didn't think that the diary would look like this for the final update lol.
