5/23 Seed put into shot glass with water
5/24 Seed moved to wet paper towel
5/27 Wasn’t able to check up on the paper towel until tonight. Had a big taproot that was unfortunately somewhat “in” the towel, so I had to gently yank it free. It’s in a solo cup now so hopefully no harm done
5/28 The Stoopid Fruits has popped up and looks good
6/13 Last couple of weeks were uneventful, just been watering as needed. Transplant day is for sure coming soon
6/17 Transplant day. I mixed up 50% coco and 50% perlite, then added 2 Tbsp total of pelletized gypsum to the mix. Once I got her transplanted to the 5 gallon pot I hand watered in 1 gallon of RO water with calmag, yucca, and H2O2. I won’t adjust the light at all, new reading after the height increase is 225 PAR / 14.6 DLI. Later in the day I decided to remove the first and second nodes in preparation for a mainline.
6/18 No signs of stunting after a stressful day yesterday. I’ll keep an eye on it until it’s time to turn on the autopot, which should be about a week.
6/22 The pot was light and it was time to water. It’s been 5 days since the transplant so I’m going to turn on the autopot system, let the pot get nice and heavy, then turn it back off. Next time the pot gets light I’ll turn it back on and leave it on. I just checked the reservoir and it’s at 5.9 pH and 1350 EC. I figured it’s also a good time for a bump up in light so I went up to 300 PAR / 19.4 DLI. I also noticed my environment settings weren’t exactly set up right so I broke out the humidifier and got the VPD where it needs to be.
6/24 I may have had the light up a little much so I backed it down a tad. I also decided it was time to commit to a modified mainline technique for this grow so I topped it above the fourth node. This means the first and second nodes have been removed, the third and fourth nodes remain, and everything above that has been removed. I also turned back on the autopot system and will leave it on for the duration now.
7/2 The transition to autopot fertigation was a little rough with this one. I’ll need to revisit my seedling process to make that a little more effective. But everything is back on track now and looking good. Really not much to do until the plant grows up a little bit more so I can top all the new branches again.
7/4 Finally reached the point where each branch had at least 4 nodes so I topped each just above the third node. This will bring it up to 8 top sites, but now I have to debate which tent to grow it in long term. If it’s the 3x3 then I’ll probably top again to get 16 tops, but I’m done with topping if I keep it in the 3x2.
7/6 Day 40 from sprout. I did decide to do some LST now to get the branches to start spreading out since it’s too soon to use the trellis net for anything. Also clipped just a couple leaves that were either blocking the branches or were damaged.
7/11 Day 45 from sprout. Trimmed off all branches from the lowest nodes for a proper mainline, but left them on the highest node for now. I didn’t want to take too much off at once, plus I’m still debating how hard to go with the mainline. I’m already doing a hybrid mainline, not really all the way so it doesn’t matter much to me if I leave some branches be.
7/16 Day 50 from sprout. Did some more defoliation today as well as topping every site that I could. I think I’ll be keeping this one in the 3x2 so knowing that I think I would flip to flower soon. But now I have the Mac N Jack started to get a head start before moving into the still occupied 3x3. So I figured more topping and defoliation would not only be good for more tops but also to slow it down a little bit. It’s 2 weeks minimum before I have the 3x3 free so I don’t want the Stoopid Fruits, a sativa, to fill my small tent before flip. That could get hard to manage.
7/24 Day 58 from sprout. I’ll admit I haven’t really done anything to the Stoopid Fruits since the last topping. I think I really should be flipping to flower now but I have no choice but to wait until the Mac n Jack seedling can get out of there. I’ll also admit to being not so excited for this strain after smoking another very closely related strain, also of the mango/tropical/sativa variety and not being as impressed I thought I would be. Yes, that was something else entirely but with a similar terp profile expected from this it’s a little deflating. Ah well, plenty of time left to grow many more strains after this one.
7/30 Day 64 from sprout. Big changes everywhere today. The Stoopid Fruits is no longer an autopot grow and is now an outdoor grow. I had room in the garden for it and this now gives me the flexibility to do some real interesting stuff. First this frees up my 3x2 tent for drying the Fanta Sea, instead of drying it in the 3x3. Next I was able to get the Mac N Jack transplanted into it’s final 3 gallon autopot in the 3x3 tent. So after drying is complete I will then have an empty tent which I have some interesting ideas for, either going back to running 2 autoflowers again or maybe even participating in a grow off challenge, the details of which will be coming in a couple days.
But the big takeaway for this grow is that updates may be much more seldom. It won’t always be easy to keep track of what’s going on now and many things will be out of my hands. I’ll still shoot for a weekly update or 2 so we’ll see.
Well, for the past month I've already known this just wasn't gonna make it. Buds are only just beginning to form, and it's almost October. The weather in my area will only allow a few more weeks of flower time before the weather gets too cold. So she won't produce anything useable, but I suppose she's a nice garden plant. Not sure why she didn't go in to flower sooner like my CBD plants did, but it is what it is. This will likely be my last update unless I feel like seeing how far she can go with the weather.
Well I decided to just let her be for awhile and she's actually packing on some size finally. Now in my area everyone is harvesting their outdoor so obviously she's way behind the curve. I'm not sure this will result in anything useful being so far behind, but I suppose there's still a little time before first frost hits. May as well see what happens before then. The powdery mildew is sadly starting to take over so I trimmed off the worst of it that I can see.
Well she was harvested on 10/29. A good chunk was lost to bud rot unfortunately but I'll still have a few ounces I think once drying is done. I'll do the smoke review in a few weeks once I feel good about all the details.
Bro why do I not know when you start a new diary!?!?!?! 🤣
Hey I got a question, do you not give them anything but cal mag/iron up to week 6 veg? I’ve never used an auto pot before but my friend in town uses them with great success like you.
@FrontRowAG_BrianG, I think the autopots do work great and are convenient, but on a commercial scale I'm not sure it would be feasible. Something like drip irrigation, water rings on a timer, or a flood system would probably be vastly cheaper with similar results. One thing though that's crazy about the autopots is that literally nothing drains out of them for the duration of the grow. I have not had a single drop of water go down a drain yet once it heads to the plant. So from an environmental perspective it's probably the best solution available to prevent waste fertilizer from getting out into the world, but that's probably the only unique perk.
@Dmars, I’m following you now. I thought I was but I was just following your one diary. I love bouncing ideas back and forth. We are working on obtaining a commercial building pretty soon. My buddy swears by the auto pots. I’m trying to convince him it’s too expensive on a commercial scale lol. That’s what my friend does is starts in pure coco and at some point starts the auto pot under them…not sure what week of veg but I’ll ask. He’s been using them for years tho
@FrontRowAG_BrianG, so the whole process for starting a seed to getting it into an active autopot is something I need to work on still (this being my third autopot run, with my second ever run being the Fanta Sea). You can see with this one that the leaves started to yellow after my first watering with just calmag water. My thinking was that since I used some left over miracle grow in a solo cup to get it started that I wouldn't need to jump right in to my usual water mix. I think the best way forward next time around might be to just start in plain coco, give calmag water for germination, but once we are in the seedling stage I'll just scoop some water out of my res and hand water with that until it's ready for the autopot to be turned on. I gotta update all the nutrients used and other details in this diary, it's not completely up to date.
@FrontRowAG_BrianG, Yeah, it had a good stretch. I'm getting worried though, it should be forming buds by now but I'm not seeing it. I have a shorter season than most so it could be problematic.
