Germination

Welcome to the Smoking Tiki's hut! For this grow, I'm using some of the seeds I won at the Sensi Seeds Fall Cup contest last year. I kept the seeds in my fridge door during 9 months as advised on the Sensi Seeds website. It worked very well because all the seeds successfully germinated after 48h! 😎 I used 3x3 seeds. I selected 2x3 seeds with the bigger root to put them in some pots. I will let them grow a bit and then select the 3 best plants to make it until the harvest. My set-up: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Mars Hydro TSW2000 (300W). This is the first time I'm using this light, I'm curious to see how it will turn out! - Tristar fan (30W) - Greenmigo dehumidifier (155W). This one removes more humidity with less W then my previous dehumidifer which was an old one. - Compo Sana universal soil (2x40l) - Timer - Weather station + pH meter Have a nice journey through my grow diary!

The 6 plants came out of the ground 😎 Even if the seeds were quite the same after germination, there is a significant difference between the plants growth. I will wait until the transplant in the final pot, but I already have a good idea about the 3 final candidates 😏 I've decided to increase the light power during the week because the plants bear the light intensity. 4 plants out of 6 are growing quite well, I only need 3 so it's alright. The growth is a bit slower than during my previous Sensi Seeds grow (if interested, see here https://growdiaries.com/diaries/157797-grow-journal-by-smokingtiki/week/869197). In my previous grow I was using a 24h light schedule so that's maybe the reason. The roots continue to reach the bottom of the pots. I increased the light power again. The growth is going quite well this week. I've selected the 3 best plants (one of each strain) for the final pots transplants. The Blackberry Cake is a bit late compared to the other ones but it keeps growing and the roots look good. I moved a bit the light away from the plants because they seemed to be slightly light burned. I also started the fan (when the light is ON), and set the dehumidifier to 65%. Good growth this week, the roots have already reached the pots! The Blackberry Cake seems to develop nicely but it's still smaller than the two others. I topped the plants and started to apply some LST and they responded very well. This is the first time I try to do some LST without bending the main stem, let's see how it goes. I increased the light power to 75%. I moved the fan to be further away from the Blackberry Cake because it seems that it suffered from the wind, the leaves look and feel dry. During watering, only a small quantity of water ran down in the saucer and I poured 2l in each pot. The Blackberry Cake and the Cashew Kush looked a bit droopy, I think I should have watered a bit sooner. It starts to smell in the room 😏 Plants heights at the end of the week : ------------------------------------------- Blackberry Cake : 12,5cm Jack Herer : 18cm Cashew Kush : 19,5cm

This week, I continued the LST on each plant everyday. Unfortunately, I broke one branch of the Cashew Kush by pulling too hard on it. Since it was one of the double branches (see last week photo), I'm curious to see if the other smaller branch will now increased its growth to compensate the loss. The growth is good despite some probable nitrogen excess (curled tip + dark green leaves) on the Blackberry Cake and the Cashew Kush. This is not the first time I'm facing this with Sensi Seeds plants in this pre-fertilized soil, but they always turned out fine in the end! I added a bit more water to these two plants to try to eliminate a bit of nitrogen excess. I also increased the watering frequency. I wanted to give some light to the lower branches without defoliating too much, too soon. So, I get the idea of removing only some leaflets on all the plants. I don't know if this technique has a name and if it's useful. If your heard about it, please let me know 😎 Plants heights at the end of the week : ------------------------------------------- Blackberry Cake : 21cm Jack Herer : 25cm Cashew Kush : 25cm

I defoliated the 3 plants to give some light to all the branches. I broke one branch of the Cashew Kush during the watering. I inadvertently pulled on one of the string used for LST with the bottle cap. I also noticed that another branch of the Cashew Kush broke because of the LST, but the tip is still attached to the rest of the branch. I already broke 3 branches of this poor Cashew Kush so far, sorry little plant 😞 I also almost completely broke one branch of the Jack Herer but since it was still attached a bit, I've tried to fix it with some tape and wire. I already did that in the past and it worked but this time the extremity of the branch did not make it 😔 I'm now watering every 2 days. No fertilizer yet. Due to increasing humidity before defoliation, I put the fan ON 18h/day again. Humidity was around 65% before the defoliation and 62% after. For the last days of the week, I set the dehumidifier to 50%. I slightly reduced the light intensity from 75 to 70% to try to reduce the light burns of the top leaves. Next week I'll set the lamp to 12h/12h. Plants heights at the end of the week : ------------------------------------------- Blackberry Cake : 25cm Jack Herer : 32cm Cashew Kush : 32cm

This is the first week with only 12 hours of light and the plants grow pretty well 😎 I removed some leaves here and there to give some light to the new branches but no major defoliation. The broken branch of the Cashew Kush from last week (see D42 - Cashew Kush) has survived and went back towards the light, it's a strong plant! 💪 The light is now set to 100% and is really hotter than at 75%. I cannot leave my hand on the top of it for too long or it burns a bit. Despite of that, I have no temperature issues in the room. The plants keep growing and the first pistils have appeared a little bit more than one week after the 12h/12h switch. It looks like some of the leaves close to the fan received too much wind so I moved the fan to the other side of the crop to see if it's better, it seems to work. The Blackberry Cake branches grew much this week and unfortunately I didn't see that the LST strings were too tight 😒 Now I removed them but they left some marks on the branches. It already happened to me with previous grows but the plants recovered 😎 It has been two weeks since the 12h/12h switch, I think I can expect some small flowers during next week 👊 Plants heights at the end of the week : ------------------------------------------- Blackberry Cake : 50 cm Jack Herer : 47 cm Cashew Kush : 56 cm

Here we are, the 3 plants started flowering a little bit more than two weeks after the 12h/12h switch 😎 The Jack Herer is yellowing a bit but I started to use some Bio-Bloom, I hope it will help. I reduced the dehumidifier setpoint to 45%. With this setting, the humidity near the plants stays between 40 and 50%. Sometimes, I slightly open the room window to help to decrease the humidity. I have some arthropods called "Protaphorura" in my soil since the beginning of the grow. I didn't manage to take some pictures of them before now. First, because of the pot size, and then too many leaves. They also measure about 1mm long so it was not easy to get a correct shot. I always get some in my soil but from what I found on the internet and experienced, they are harmless. I think the plants finished their stretch this week. The buds are now getting bigger and some trichomes have appeared on the leaves next to the buds 😎 The smell is also stronger than last week. I have some small issues with the plants. Yellow/brown tips for the Blackberry Cake and the Cashew Kush and yellowing leaves for the Jack Herer. The BioBloom seems to slow down the issues so I hope it will be alright. The previously broken branch of the Cashew Kush was not flowering so I removed it. On the other hand, the Blackberry Cake nicely recovered from the LST strings marks 💪 Plants heights at the end of the week : ------------------------------------------- Blackberry Cake : 80 cm Jack Herer : 59 cm Cashew Kush : 83 cm

As I thought, the 3 plants have finished their stretch and have reached their final heights. The buds are growing! I added another support under the Jack Herer and the canopy is now quite flat. A few lower leaves felt this week but the plants are looking good overall. I increased the BioBloom dosage from 1ml/l to 2ml/l. I also moved the light up a bit to 60cm above the canopy because the yellow leaves/tips are mainly located right under the light. Mars Hydro recommends between 30 and 45cm but I don't want to burn my plants and my grow area is pretty large. I found a small harmless insect on the Jack Herer 👽 Plants heights at the end of the week : ------------------------------------------- Blackberry Cake : Final height 80 cm Jack Herer : Final height 59 cm Cashew Kush : Final height 83 cm

It started to freeze outside this week, the temperature in the grow room dropped a litte bit which is quite good. The plants are looking pretty good and I decided to lower the light from 60 to 50cm above the canopy to see how it goes. After 3 days I see no sign of light burn. I don't think I will go closer than that because I don't want to loose too much light on the external branches. There are a lot of trichomes on the buds now 😎

I increased the BioBloom dosage from 3ml/l to 4ml/l as recommended by the manufacturer. A few leaves continue to yellow here and there and some brown spots appeared but overall they are still green and the buds develop pretty well so I guess that's ok 😌 They also reached the 100th day milestone this week 😎

Last week I thought that the 50cm distance between the light and the top of the canopy was ok. But this week, I get some signs of light burns on every plants and I decided to put it back to 60cm. This distance seems to work best for this grow. I think the Cashew Kush shows some slight signs of nitrogen deficiency so I added a bit of BioGrow (1ml/l) and hope it will help. For more info about the "Soil people", see week 9. As part of the "Tent-X Ultimate Grow Challenge" contest, I received a free Tent-X controller, a MBS-TH Humidity/temperature/light sensor and a LMA-14 light control adapter. I requested them on sunday and get them on thursday so it was super fast, thank you @TrolMaster_Europe ! 👌 ------------------------------- Controller + MBS-TH review ------------------------------- The Tent-X controller combined with the MBS-TH sensor provides information about temperature and humidity. The light detector of this sensor is used to trigger the day/night mode of the Tent-X controller but doesn't measure light intensity (you need another sensor for that). I've tried to connect the controller to the phone app and it seemed to work. I will not use this function because it requires to connect the controller to the internet with an Ethernet cable and I don't have an Ethernet plug in my grow room. I set-up a rudimentary fixation system to hang the controller and the sensor since I'm not growing in a tent, but it works haha. Now, I can make my measurement in the center of the canopy instead of making them just above the ground. ---------------------------------------- LMA-14 light control adapter review ---------------------------------------- This adapter allows you to control your light via a RJ45 cable. I'm not using it because my light and my fan are synchronized and my fan cannot be controled by a RJ45 cable. I don't want to have a timer for the fan and a controller for the light. I just use the timer for both. However, Trolmaster sells some plug sockets that can be controled by RJ45 cable so you can control everything with your Tent-X controller.

Last week, the plants showed signs of light stress. It's been almost 2 weeks since I moved the light from 50cm to 60cm above the canopy. The Cashew Kush is still stressed right under the light but the two others look good now. It's not perfect but overall the plants look alright and are slowly approaching the harvest time. The Cashew Kush had less yellowing leaves this week, I think the BioBloom helped👍 Next week, the plants will reach the range of flowering days given by Sensi Seeds so I started to check the trichomes 👽 I decided to compare what the TrolMaster controller measures in term of temperature and humidity with what my weather station measures. The measures are very close when done on the same spot. Based on that, I compared the temperature and humidity just above the ground of my room and in the canopy. The differences are not significant which probably means that the air circulation is good 👌

The plants are slowly ripening. I set the dehumidifier to 40% but despite of that, it's hard to go below 45% in the room when the light is ON. I open the window regularly to bring some fresh air in the grow room and decrease the temperature and humidity but the weather is quite hot for the season and it's raining a lot. I will probably harvest the Blackberry Cake and the Cashew Kush end of next week 😎
