This post kicks off the start of this journey and my first ever DWC run. The DWC setup is two six inch net pots with hydroton per 17 gallon tub with one air pump and two airstones per tub. I'll be using the 6 part General Hydroponics nutrient line and hydroguard to help prevent root rot.
EDIT: Added photos after putting seedlings in dwc setup. PPFD is around 185. Humidity 65%~. Temps in the mid 70's.
Unfortunately lost my photos of this week. It doesn't really matter as the seedlings were crazy overwatered. This is my first run at dwc and I had no real idea when to top feed or how high to have my water levels in the reservoir. I basically stunted the hell out of the seedlings during this week.
Week two was me just trying to figure out what to do with seedlings in dwc. Very little growth and a bunch of twisting leaves. Pic's will come back in week three.
Alright, pics are back! Week three is when I had some struggles with light leaks and brown algae. The roots were just a couple of noodles coming out of the net pots. Brown algae was also clinging to them and I did res changes hoping that would fix it (it didn't). I also bumped up the PPM's to 500~ which was a mistake. The root development was slow and the plants were obviously stunted. I was also dealing with the pH rising constantly.
Week 4 I beat the algae! The hydroton WILL always leak light is my takeaway from this week. This was a great learning moment with DWC for me. I lowered the ppm's from last week and they seemed to respond well to that. As you can see in the pics I fully insulated my res and covered the hydroton with net pot covers. This removed all light leaks and I haven't had a problem with algae since. This also helped keep res temps down as an added bonus.
The Liberty Haze is the most compact plant I've ever grown with nodes incredibly close to each other and has some good root development finally starting. The Dosi seems to still be struggling with just a couple noodle roots per plant. I think the lack of roots means I should've been top feeding to encourage more root formation.
So this is week 5. I definitely lost a week due to all the pH fluctuations and root zone issues but things seem to have finally stabilized. I'm still getting some twisting on the leaf tips and have no idea why. All I can think of is root damage from my previous issues. Also I noticed that the leaves all seem to be laying down and not really perky.
Later in the week I noticed things were starting to pick up and roots were exploding and a really nice white color. I also noticed some N toxicity with some clawing at the tips of the Liberty Haze.
Week 6 chugging along. I did some light defoliation this week on the larger Haze plant. I've pretty much given up on the one dosidos as it's getting the same nutes as the other but just never gets better. I also topped all four and did some LST.
Growing well. The one Dosidos has finally seemed to start feeding and has regained a nice green color while the other dosidos is fussy and doesnt want to recover. Tons more LST on the larger haze to try and keep the height down. Also did some LST on the dosi's.
This is the first week of 12/12. They've kinda gotten away from me. At this point they're growing so quick I was basically forced to flower or things will get a bit crazy later on. I was really hoping the shorter ones would catch up to the large haze plant, oh well. I Lollipopped the bottom third of the largest plant and set the timer to 12/12.
Also: I've been using the Flora Trio (three part) line of nutrients from General Hydroponics. This site shouldn't have just removed them as an option after the buyout because you can still get the older branded ones basically anywhere. I've been using at the light feed schedule listed here: https://generalhydroponics.com/resources/flora-series-feedcharts/.
