My favourite plant of my first grow graced me with 8 seeds and I was able to pop 2 of them. Mama was an impulsively popped freebie seed that was easy to grow, yielded beautifully and her generosity apparently lives on. Interested to see what kind of genetics these throw back at me. Not expecting them to be like my favourite girl but growing them in honour of her anyway. 🌱
We killed the 2 seedlings, forgot to water them oops! Trying to pop another seed, fingers crossed 🤞tap root has emerged and we threw it into a shot glass of coco coir.. hopefully!
We got lucky and managed to pop the last Afghan seed successfully and so she’s going into the pro-mix grow bag I won in the thanksgiving contest because autos don’t like to be transplanted and I really want to give her a fair chance this grow.. considering how loved her mama was and she only had 1gallon. I’m a bit nervous of overwatering this seedling though so I’m leaving her in the starter cup of hp for a few more days. She’s under 12-12 light right now because my harvest has been delayed but whatever, I’ll give her 24/0 by the time she’s planted too.
Transferred the little seedling into 2 gallon promix cx grow bag and she’s under 24/0 lighting. Had intended to use the hp grow bag but want to use it for something else plus Afghan’s mom grew super in peat so I want to try coco. Started feeding at 1/2 strength. She looks ridiculous in the big pot but I don’t want to risk transplant shock so going straight into final size. 2 gallons should be a decent size for her. Mom was flowered in 3 litres and yielded really well so I’m hoping this is a good size for her. She will be moved into a 2x2 tent as soon as there’s room and I will probably run her at 18-6 for the rest of the grow.
Mmm.. doesn’t appear to be anything happening above the soil yet but that’s a lot of coco to root out.
While she roots, I’m smoking the fruits of her mama. The jar is getting low.
Happy growing 🌱
She’s growing slowly but she’s growing.. hopefully she’s been filling out her roots 🤷♀️
Runoff is kind of high and I think the feed schedule is too much for her. I have a new nutrient formulation so I reset the substrate by flushing 3 gallons of the new solution through the pot until runoff matched. Snipped off the lowest leaves too close to the substrate. I think she liked it. She’s got some growing to do now but she seems to be responding well to the lighter feed.
I want to top her but I need to see growth first..
No signs of flowering yet. I pinched out the growth tip to promote branching. Lowered light time to 18 hours from 24. At this point her mother was showing signs of flower.. I wonder if there’s not enough auto in the generics of this seed.. I am open to the possibility that she will need photoperiod light to flower but for now I have plenty of time to enjoy her progress.
Hmmm no signs of flower yet but the topping went well and she’s getting nice a bushy.. let’s give her another week to see if she’ll initiate flowering automatically and if not we will switch to 12-12 lighting.
Well she has not automatically entered flower yet and we ran out of vertical space in her veg tent so her topmost leaf tips started to yellow/bleach from the light. We were expecting a 25% chance of getting auto from this S1 so photoperiod she must be. There’s not even those pre-flower pistils or balls for easy sexing so I had to get macro shots of her nodes to confirm that she’s a she.
Height was 15” before crimping her branches to make her an even 12” height like her new neighbours in the 3x3. Lights switched to 12-12, humidity is lower in here but temps are the same. Also getting the same feed as per recommended schedule, nitrogen starts getting reduced from week 3 of flower. She’s drinking more though, to get adequate runoff I’m giving her 1.5L per day, probably due to lower humidity as well as growth rate. Watered once daily. I should probably split watering into 2 feeds put runoff is still in good range at this point.
Run off is approx 1100 ppm 6.3pH.
I’m going to have to take a few clones of her since she doesn’t seem to have enough auto in her to flower without light manipulation. There’s still a chance she could be ‘fast-flowering’ variant though which would also be cool. And I like the idea of preserving her anyway until we know how she produces. So 2 cuts rooting now and in 3 weeks we will save the best cut for a temporary mother and toss the spare. I let her mom get overripe on purpose to force a few seeds but now I need to be carefully monitoring her and be ready to cull if she shows any herm traits.
She’s been under 12-12 light since Feb 28, pictures taken Mar 2. Bud sites are lightening, flowering should commence soon!
Still getting veg feed 800 ph6 daily drain to waste, I continued crimping her tops to stay even with the rest of the canopy last week in the 3x3 but will stop now. No defoliation or additional pruning. I’m waiting on my new light and drainage table before installing the drip emitters and increasing the feed frequency.
March 6 lights came today. Cleaned out the tent, hung new ventilation and lights, set up stand and tray, replaced plants and dropped net. Added vitathrive and potassium silicate to the feed and dropped the net on her. She’s being ScrOGed in the 3x3 with 3 other photos from seed. Lights 16” readings around 850ppfd. RH in tent is kind of high, 60-65% I need to finish installing the drainage and we might have to get the dehumidifier out but I’m waiting to see how the weather will turn.
Switched feed to 50:50 bloom/grow. She’s flowering now and is filling out the net (left side). I had to remove the fat bastard, it was male, but Afghan was happy to take over the extra space. Finally setup the automatic drippers! Drain to waste twice per day. Input 6.1pH 700 ppm, output 6.4pH 800 ppm.
She’s drinking and growing fast. More olive silver green than the hybrid photos sharing the tent. They are a more vibrant shade of green. Her top leaves were a bit damaged from a spray-n-grow treatment that didn’t dry before the too close lights came on. Raised lights and snipped the most damaged leaves. Drinking fast and ppm in runoff is dropping she’s getting 1 minute of water every 5 hours.
Flowers are bulking up
The clone under 20/4 is also flowering so this seed does have auto genes it was just slow to start flowering. I guess this will be the end of Afghan for me
The pH fluctuations and light burn combined really hurt her and I removed a lot of very damaged crispy leaves. Yet she’s developing better than the rest of my plants so she’s fairly resilient! I’m hoping to get something off her for my troubles. If the rest of my plants weren’t heading to the scrap heap I’d probably chop her too. But I’m hopeful she’s worth the wait.
She’s finishing up. 80% red pistils. Couldn’t been better but I’m glad we stuck with her. Finally figured out how to keep my water stable so lessons learned and next round will be impr
