+ Dinafem White Widow XXL Autoflowering: https://www.cannabisseeds.co.za/buy-cannabis-seeds/autoflowering/white-widow-xxl-autoflowering/ For all of the below growing supplies I used futurama.co.za and had it delivered to my door for like R150. Also check out hydroponic.co.za for good prices online. If you're in Jo'burg and don't want to pay for delivery check out the gthydro.co.za shop in Fourways. I've seen a lot of recommendations for jamiesgardenshop.co.za online as well. Please let me know if you guys know of anywhere else with killer growing supplies etc! I would love it if someone would import Fox Farms soils or something American/European growers use. Lekker! + Freedom Farms Premium Classic Growing Medium - 30L Best ready made organic super-soil vibe I can find in SA. Ingredients: Coco Coir, Worm Castings, Compost, Perlite, Vermiculite,Volcanic Rock Dust, Bone Meal, Gypsum, Dolomite Lime, Kelp Meal, Organic Nutrients. + Freedom Pot - 20L Fabric Pot Fabric pots allow the roots to breathe better, help prevent under and over-watering and air prunes the roots leading to a denser root mass. + Freedom Farms Coco Perlite 50/50 Growing Medium Just using a small amount for the seedling so I don't burn the root on the Premium Classic. + Mycoroot Supreme Root Growth Treatment Mycorrhizae. It was R49 so why not. Beneficial micro-organisms break down the soil and make nutrients more accessible to the plant. + Bonaqua Still Water No idea what's in my city's water so thought I'd play it safe with bottled water, for the start at least. Bad pH will hurt your plants. This is Reverse Osmosis (RO) water with a PH of between 6 and 6.8, which I've seen recommended a lot. Typical Mineral Composition mg/L pH 6.5 TDS 44 Calcium Ca 0.6 mg Magnesium Mg 3.2 mg Sodium NA <5 mg Potassium 3.4 mg Chloride Cl 5.6 mg Sulphate SO4 14 mg Alkalinity CaCO3 9.8 mg Nitrate N <1 mg Fluoride F <0.1 mg Iron Fe <0.1 mg Aluminium Al <0.1 mg +++ + Germination Day 1 8pm: Put x 1 seed in a shot glass of room temperature Bonaqua Still Water and into a dark cupboard for 12 hours. + Germination Day 2 8am: Put x 1 seed in a folded paper towel and wet with Bonaqua Still Water. Placed in between two small plates and put into a cool, dark cupboard for 24 hours. + Germination Day 3 8am: Seedling has sprouted a 1mm root. Left in folded paper towel in cool, dark place. 8pm: Seedling has sprouted a 10mm root. Planted it that night into the Freedom 20L Fabric Pot filled with Freedom Farms Premium Classic. + Fabric Pot /Soil Prep worked in about 7.5l of water into the roughly 15l Freedom Farms Premium Classic by hand. The bag says you should "water thoroughly the first time you water", so that's what I took that to mean. Made sure the medium was fully saturated. Had about 200ml runoff. So maybe do 7l. In the middle I made a small 5cm deep x 5cm wide hole and filled it with soaked plain Coco Perlite 50/50 Growing Medium to prevent burning the new root on the Premium Classic. +++ + Day 1 (01/11/2018) 8am: Hello, beautiful! Made a plastic propagator out of the top of a 1.5l Bonaqua Still Water bottle. Spray/mist the propagator and the seedling about 3 times a day. Placed the plant next to a glass sliding door that gets no direct sunlight, only reflected light. + Day 2 - 4 Placed the plant beneath some trees in my garden allowing it to get broken sunlight from 9-5. (8 hours) Max temperatures are around 25°C during the day and minimums are around 15°C at night so pretty ideal from what I've read. Plastic Propagator still on and misting a coupe of times a day. + Day 4 Plant is looking a little stretched. Not enough sunlight I think. Will start tomorrow with 1 hour of direct sunlight in the morning and work my way up. Propagator came off, still misting a few times a day. + Day 5-7 Worked up to 8 hours direct sunlight. Plant immediately showed a huge improvement and immediately started growing bigger, wider and stronger. Definitely light starved her a little, I think. Needed to give more direct sunlight sooner. With my next autoflower (next month) I'm going to go day 1 under trees/indirect sunlight, then day 2 with 4 hours direct sunlight, and then by day 3 all the 8 hours direct sunlight I can get. I would even consider that playing it safe. I planted some bag seeds in the same Coco Perlite 50/50 mix and gave them direct sunlight for 8 hours a day from the get-go and they are crazy far ahead of where my auto was after the same amount of time. One out of the three died though... So my suggestion with expensive auto seeds is a 1 or 2 day hardening off process but not more than that.

Slow stretchy start because I went too easy on her with direct sunlight in week 1. + Day 8 I topped up the pot with more soil to cover some of the stretch. She gets direct sunlight as much as possible now and is looking so much better. I try to cover the sun side of the 20l fabric pot as much as possible with a cooler box lid. + Day 11 Looking amazing. This is the kind of growth i would have liked to have seen 4 days earlier if I hadn't kept her out of direct sunlight for the first few days. You live and you learn 😂 + Day 14 Kapow! 💥

+ Day 19 Started with first nutrients today. Waited four days longer than I would have liked because of the slight stunting in the first few seedling days with not enough direct sunlight. Going with organic everything for this grow cos it's harder to hurt your plant and your soils microbes with organic fertilisers/feeding. Used Seagro and Kelpak I bought from Builders Warehouse for R53 and R79 respectively. Dirt cheap. Went with 1/5th of the recommended dosage on each of the bottles. Fabric pot was super dry and took 4.5l of water. Bonaqua 😂 Had accidental 200ml of runoff. Changing to tap water instead of bottled water from here on out. I read that you can get the chlorine in tap water to evaporate if you leave it out in the open for a few days. Chlorine kills soil microbes so definitely not what I want in my organic setup. I fill three 5l bottles with tap water and leave them outside for 3 days. It's crazy, the water smells like a chlorine swimming pool at first but after a few days the smell is gone. Seems to work. Apparently there's some other chlorine ion this trick doesn't work for but it's better than nothing. Also desperately wish I had a pH meter but they're like a grand for a good one. Maybe next season! Bag seeds with direct sunlight from the start are flying. If you compare the auto's day 6 with the bag seed day 6 it's crazy. Sweeeet!

Away for 2 weeks :/ Here are 2 photos the wifey sent me towards the end of week 4. She was awesome enough to move them around (when she could) for more direct sunlight. So the nodes are looking pretty tight/close together and the plant is looking relatively nice and dense.

Back after 2 weeks away! A buddy did a good job looking after them for the second week. He wasn't able to move them around to follow the sun though so I think they stretched a little bit. They were getting about 5 hours direct morning sunlight where they were. If I move them around though I can get 8 hours direct sunlight. I think the extra light would have kept the nodes tighter and the plant denser. Going in to Greenthumb Hydroponics (gthydro.co.za) in Jo'burg tomorrow for a bunch of stuff like Bio-Bizz Bloom, sulphur free molasses, more Freedom Farms soil and pots, an airpot, jiffy peat pellets and green tape for LST'ing. Amped! With my nutrition I'm basically going for a cheaper version of the Bio-Bizz organic nutrients range. Seagro intead of Fish-Mix. Kelpak instead of Alg-A-Mic. Both of the above I got from Builders Warehouse for cheap. Molasses instead of Bio-Grow. Lastly, I'm buying the Bio-Bizz Bio-Bloom because I can't find a cheaper alternative here in SA. I'm growing fully organic with organic soil because it's easier. It's much harder to get the feeding or watering etc wrong. I'm trying to focus on my soil life; microbes, mycorrhizae etc. I lst'd one Blue Cheese bag seed and topped the other. Keen to carry on experimenting with these two. They're looking dark green and super happy in the soil I made for them myself with bone meal, kraal manure, coco and perlite. Been giving them Seagro, Molasses, Kelpak and Guanoflo. All fully organic. Let me know what you think! Do you agree that not being able to move the White Widow Auto around and keep her in direct sunlight more has stretched her out a little bit? Thanks! Lekker!

Is my plant stretched? Is it because I was away for two weeks and wasn't able to keep her in direct sunlight more? She was getting 5.5 hours direct sunlight for those two weeks but when I'm home I can get 9.5 hours direct sun. Is there anything I can do? Are my nutrients right?

hey @Biird , you're right that less light might make the plant stretch, but it's also a question of light intensity so it's more of a problem for indoor grows. Overall what I can see is that your plant is actually very healthy and vigorous and you're basically average height wise for the strain - so dont worry , the stretch is going to start now hopefully it will double in size, the bigger the better right? more bud ! you're doing a good thing with the mollasses - carbs are great for this period of growth ! i wish i could give you pointers but you're 100 that's the truth. 🚀

Alrighty then! Worked my way up this week from 1ml/l to 3ml/l Bio-Bloom. Unsulphured molasses (in place of more expensive Bio-Grow) to feed the soil microbiology. Giving her Kelpak (a kelp extract) in place of more expensive Alg-A-Mica at 1/5th the recommended dosage. Plant is looking a little pale so still giving her Seagro for nitrogen, a fish emulsion at 1/5th the recommended dosage. All fully organic. Lst'd her lower branches and think I noticed an improvement almost overnight and the next day with the lower bud sites becoming bigger. Temperatures are hitting 35 which is definitely a bit hectic for the girls I think. Will probably get to 40 in Jan/Feb but let’s see what happens. Brand new baby White Widow Auto XXL on it's way! Using everything I learned with the first one. She's already killing it in terms of height and age. Amped! Lekker!

Game on! Head is fattening up nicely and starting to look sticky. Kapow! 💥 I was mostly at home this week and able to keep her in the sun as much as possible. Day temps where around 35-40(!) though so I misted her as much as possible and tried to keep the fabric pot in some kind of shade where I could. If you're not at home to keep an eye on your plants in temperatures like that I would try and make sure your plants are in the shade around lunch time as it gets pretty brutal out there. I could be wrong but I don't think keeping them in direct sunlight AS MUCH as possible is as important during flowering as it is during veg. What do you think? Did a small CalMag top-up as I've seen this recommended around mid grow. Lekker!

Again I was away for work most of the week. Heads growth has slowed but they are still getting bigger and denser every week. Just not as fast as they were at the beginning of flowering. I have a second seed of the same genetics and same setup in week 4 now, but I've given it as much direct sunlight as possible from the get go and the thing is thriving. These genetics are incredible. The amount of growth it does in such as short time is amazing. Very happy with these Dinafem genetics from www.cannabisseeds.co.za!

Was away for most of the week for work. What was different this week though was that it rained a ton. Almost all day, every day. It's the first time this grow season that that's happened here. When I got back all the plants looked extremely happy. Dark green, big and lush. So no nutrients at all this week, and no tap water, just plain rain water. Think it's really a lesson maybe that less is more really. I have a pretty great amended super soil with the Freedom Farms Organic Classic and don't really need much more than that for an auto. Also, I have no idea what my city's tap water pH is and chlorine content etc is so that could easily be a huge problem, too. Also, the plants would have LOVED the lower temps in the day with it raining all the time as opposed to 35-40 (104 degrees fahrenheit!) So I think it's maybe a combination of all of those things really. I think I'm going to hit her one more time this week with Bio-Bloom and then start flushing for the last week. Will use my grower question this week to ask for some advice from you guys! Kapow! 💥

Single plant leaf finger has turned purple/almost black! I know plants turn purple from cold but it's not that cold, just really rainy. What's happening? Any other pro tips for finishing her off these final two weeks would be great too! About to flush. Anything else!? Thank you!

Congrats on a very cool and very rare genetic mutation. This could be caused by the start of senescense , the begining of the end of the plant's life - usually you'll get "autumn colors" not straight up black though! Anyway as in all thing genetic, you can't do anything about it, and you can expect it to get "worse" (better? More awesome?) As you flush and induce full on senescence. So for the flush the main idea is to get rid of excess nutrients. So as you you know there are three categories of plant juice : nutrient, micro nutrient and additives. For the flush you can use additives , as I do, to flush more effectively. So additives like enzymes , chelation agents like amino acids (humic and fluvic acids) or hydrochloric acid (no joke, this is often used!) Also known as flushing agents do help break down the nutrients and get rid of any excess nutrients. So the baseline is 3 weeks plain water flush in soil for the best smoo hear smoke or with additives like enzymes that's 2 weeks, with amino acids that's 10-14 days, with flushing agent maybe just one week 10 days will do. But you will be good with plain water. Try using ice water or cold water the last two weeks , it will do something with her roots and help get those colors and terpenes in. Anyway man hope this helps ! Congrats on a fantastic first grow ! 🚀

Flushing time. Using the same tap water as most of the grow, I leave the tap water out in the shade in plastic 5l bottles for the chlorine to evaporate. Don't know the pH though which sucks. Doubt it's like 6.5 or whatever's best for soil plants. Hoping my living soil buffers it though. Watering the plant like once every three days. Got nice wet dry cycle going. No nutrients. Just flushing. Plant is starting to show first signs of senescence/yellowing/dying. Not an expert though. Found an old microscope of mine which was pretty cool. Trichomes aren't cloudy yet and none are amber but apparently autoflower trichomes don't necessarily stick to the 80/20 cloudy/amber rule like photoperiods do before harvesting. One of my oldest photoperiod plants is showing female which is rad. It's just bag seed which I planted in about September and proceeded to stunt heavily with root heat stress in a small pot in the sun... Haha. Oops! Super happy to have a photoperiod plant now though to learn with. Transplanted her into Freedom Farms soil and a bigger pot for this last month or two of veg. Lastly, I LST'd the next WW Auto and keeping her facing the sun almost every day to see the difference and compare notes. She looks like she's crushing it with closer nodes and bigger lower bud sites. Can't wait to put everything I've learnt this season into growing HUGE photoperiod plants next season. Real amped.

Week 12! From what I can see it looks like she's nearly ready to go! The big fan leaves are yellow and some dead. The smaller leaves closer to the bud sites have started yellowing and dying. 90% of the pistils are red and dried up. Dinafem say it's an 80 day plant and it looks like they nailed it. Lekker!

South Africa has just legalised growing cannabis and my first ever growing experience couldn't have been more fun. This is something I've wanted to do since I was a kid and it was everything I thought it would be haha! I've finished drying and it's in a Console jar curing now but I tried a little bit and it is much stronger and better tasting than I was expecting! Being a first time grower and it being an autoflower I didn't know what to expect, but I'm super happy! Overall just really satisfied with the way everything went down and how much I learned and I can't wait to grow a couple more auto's while the season winds down. Mostly though, I'm looking forward to applying everything I learnt this first time round to growing the biggest, meanest photoperiods that I can next season! Really, really excited to try that! I consciously aimed this diary at the first time grower in South Africa so that hopefully someone growing here can learn something from it! I bought my Dinafem White Widow Auto XXL's from here: https://www.cannabisseeds.co.za/ But, for the greatest selection, I suggest here: https://www.greensmokeroomseeds.com/index.php?route=product/manufacturer They do all the top genetics like Dinafem, Dutch Passion, FastBuds, G13, Mephisto, Royal Queen Seeds, Seedsman and even TGA Subcool (shout out Mendo Dope!). And you can do singles of a lot of seeds so you can get some variety going on instead of having to buy 5 of one kind of seed like I did. They may not have stock of everything all the time so try and order either 2 months in advance, or shoot them a mail to confirm the availability of what you want if you want it immediately. Since this grow, I've had great experiences buying seeds from trophyseeds.com (who only advertise genetics on their site that they have in stock) and especially Sacredseeds.co.za who gave me a free 3-pack of Dutch Passion Autoflower seeds with an order I made with them recently. The pack was valued at R500, so that's pretty cool. All the international banks give away free seeds with orders and I would love for more SA seedbanks to do the same. I know I'll be back to sacredseeds.co.za because of it 👌 I bought the fabric pots and super-soil (by far the most important parts!) online here and their service was great: https://www.futurama.co.za/home-garden/cultivation/hydroponics-shop/?manufacturer=827 Another great online place for fabric pots, super-soil and nutrients etc is in gthydro.co.za. Or even better you can visit their shop located in Fourways in JHB. Most of the staff there are super friendly and helpful 👌 Thank you Grow Diaries and the community here for this awesome platform to document and share the experience! Can't wait for next season!

Hi. I think your plants are looking good. Can't see any deficiencies. The WW is flowering now .. so easy on the N from now and more P and K. But you using Freedom farms supersoil (??) .. so you don't need any extra fertiliser (theoretically). The soil is constructed such that one only needs to water from beginning till end. I found that with my plants where doing worse with 'designer' ferts than just to keep it simple with plain rainwater ... because of the supersoil. However make sure to keep your water feed ph round 6.5 (get a ph meter. I use a simple probe one R145 +-. works ok for me). I can see a bit of stretch on your plants (WW) but I wouldn't worry about that. The cheese bagseed looks good as well. Hope she turns out a proper female. Follow my bagseed diary.. I'll be going through the process of eliminating males and females and then spotting the hermephrodites. Problem with bagseed is that they are probably pollinated by an hermephrodite... and then the seeds - if not male .. good chance it's a hermephrodite... but you get good females as well. Thing is your hermephrodite bagseed might polinate your precious WW auto or feminised plant.. ending up again with dodgy bagseed. Thing with plants are is to keep it simple and they will grow. Remember it's a weed!! haha. Another thing (we've talked about this before) when your plants are in pots and outside .. keep them cool. Plants don't like cooked roots. Let me put it this way .. have you walked barefoot on sand on a hot summers day? ooo eina eina .. we'll same thing for plant pots.

I am defintiely following your bagseed diary. Every week 😉 It's amazing what you're doing. Well done! You taught me something there about the hermaphrodite bag seed thing. Looking good Bru! I'm also using the biobizz range and I've been pleased so far. Was under feeding at first but now going full tilt. Will be expensive in the end but will all be worth . I have bio grow, bio bloom and fish mix. Using the bio grow along with the fish mix so they both go further. Happy growing ✌️🌿

@BudsZA, That's awesome dude! I'm using cheaper alternatives to the Bio-Bizz nutrients that I can find here in SA. Doubt they'll be as good but hopefully they'll do the trick and then we can maybe all save ourselves some cash! 😂 I am using the Bio-Bloom though cos I can't find any substitute for that. Watching your grows! Lekker man!

Hi biird. Just reading your questions to Mark from DinafemSeeds. I allowed my baby plants to get morning sun and then afternoon shade (when it really get hot). The problem is not really the hot temperature in general but the heat cooking your pot where the roots are in. Your pot (haha - your pot's pot) or growing container need to stay as cool as possible in the heat of the day. Several options here: 1 Place the pot behind something where the plant itself get sun, but the pot is in the shade. 2 Dig the pot into the soil 3 Cover the soil in the pot with mulsh / straw. Hope that helps.

Hi @Simsalabim! Dude, that helps so so much. Thank you. I planted some bag seeds in the same Coco Perlite 50/50 but gave them direct sunlight from the very first day and they are super far ahead of where the autos where at that point. The only thing I made sure of was that like you say, the roots stayed cool; I put them on a big white piece of plastic which reflected the heat super well so the bricks didn't get hot at all. It's a big Garden Master garden refuse bag I got from Builders Warehouse for R10. (You can also wet it under the plastic if it's super hot and you've got the time!) At the end of the day, they're PLANTS and they like the SUN 😂 You just have to make sure the roots stay cool! It's so obvious! I planted 5 bag seeds 2 months ago in small brown pots and the roots got cooked. The plants were doing great and then they just stopped growing and have slowly gone yellow. I transplanted them and kept them but they are all about 10cm high after 2 months, yellow, and just completely stunted. My setup now is that I've got the polystyrene cups which the bag seeds are in, dug into to soil in the big pots I'm going to transplant them into. This keeps the roots totally cool, even in direct sunlight all day, and the plants are looking MASSIVE for their age. Thank you so much for your help, @Simsalabim!

@biird, Excellent! Big photos: www.youtube.com/watch www.youtube.com/watch When (and if) they ever do legalize Cannabis where I live, I plan to put my landscaping skills to work and design some beautiful raised beds with waterfalls, ponds, and autoflowering plants of all colors! @Silverback_Guerilla, Thank you so much! I hope so! What a time to be alive 😂 Come next season (in about 6 months time 😭) it's gonna look a lot different on that lawn! Haha! They haven't decided on the amount you're allowed to have yet. So as long as it's reasonably for personal use I think you'll be fine. Think I'm going to go for 5 giant photoperiods in 100/200l pots next season.. And a few autos 😁

Not the end of the world if you harvested too early.. you'll get a psychedelic head high. Nice for active outdoor activities like hiking or trance parties. It won't make you lazy. So then just keep the weed for those occations. You won't fall asleep in front of tv tho. In fact a tv will make you nuts .. rather climb a tree.

“Think it's really a lesson maybe that less is more really.” Yes! Weird and very cool. Same coloring in my diary Bryce Harper. The entire plant was black and it grew in warm temps. A food farmer I know saw it and said “Figure our how to grow black leaves on plants all the time and we’ll be billionaires”. He believes they grow faster. I dunno. She was robust Enjoy your harvest

Wow. Your week 8 flowering is looking good. It's strange for me, as we both started germinating pips about the same time. My plants are still in veg stage and yours are fat of flowers. I still have to wait a couple of months before my flowering excitement starts. I guess the advantages of an auto flower.

hey @Biird , you're right that less light might make the plant stretch, but it's also a question of light intensity so it's more of a problem for indoor grows. 🚀

Hi, will say some additions to my answer. As long as the Gitl stretches, ( shes an xl lady) keep the kombination of vegetation fert. and blooming fertiliser,. But be sure not to give to much just giving the regular amount of vegetation fertiliser and add up some blooming. She will be a very big girl and she will need some N. Happy growing iam follow up, to see how she grows

Looks like we are same strain, and about the same timing today's my day 20. Good luck, look forward to comparing along the way.

@@Simsalabim, Hey man! I would love to know what you think of my Week 5 diary! Want the feedback because you're also in SA and I love your grow! Just starting my second auto today so will be using all the new experience on her! Let me know what you think? Thanks so much!

Another this is .. you can't compare an outdoor grow in SA with an indoor grow. We only get 14h22m max daylight is CPT. That is way less than say 18hrs of indoor gardening. Remember that flowering in non auto plants are triggered when daylight is less than 12 hrs .. so your vegetative window of daylight hrs is somehow limited (in SA) as when compared to indoor or from growers in northern BC where daylight hours are much more .. hence the plants grow more on a day to day basis. Watch youtube vids of Mendo Dope .. grazy stuff there. Also good educational stuff from them. They have a video called 'How t to grow Mendo Dope' .. a must see.

@biird, For seedlings I would not do any direct sunlight for the first week then gradually move the plants into more light each day. Allowing time to actimate to more sunlight 👍 When they hit 21-28 day's old they should be fine in full sunlight as long as not to intense and watered well 👊 Now, a good auto for your climate. If I could only pick one that Would have to be White widow auto or her xxl variant 👊 Another week of steady growth my friend 👍 All the best ✌️ Mark..

@DinafemSeeds, Hi Mark! Thank you so much! They just legalised growing in South Africa. I got my Dinafems from www.cannabisseeds.co.za and they were delivered discretely to my door in 2 days. Epic! Quick question, how much direct sunlight should seedlings in South Africa get? It's pretty damn hot and dry in SA and I don't want to stress my babies with too much sun! In summer, maximums average 35°C and minimums around 20°C. Thanks so much in advance, Mark. You're the man! P.s If there are any Dinafem Autos you would specifically recommend for our hot, sunny weather that would be amazing!
the end.
