If you are going to defoliate, especially in early/mid flower as shown in the photo, then you want to trim the fan leaves ONLY. (Also look at the fan leaf stem, if it's green, do NOT cut that fan leaf).
No need to go Edward sciscor hands. Just trim the fan leaves that are casting a shadow or preventing light from reaching any good buds you desire below.
Now if you just want to leave it fine, your plant will have less stress and you mitigate a risk of a plant herming.
I won't say it's a bad thing, as it teaches growers first hand and experience they won't forget and how to avoid it.
