Hi ho!
Beginning the newest grow, this one will be growing White Widow in the same tent as Green Gelato, but this diary will be only for the Green Gelato. A couple of additional details beyond what's above:
- Two seeds are germinated, but only one will go through the full grow so I can choose the best looking one to take all the way
- Plants will be started in Solo cups and transplanted into 5 gal. fabric pots when ready
- Plants will be mainlined
- Nutrients are General Hydroponic Flora Series and CalMag
- Grow tent also contains a humidifier and a couple of oscillating fans
This should be a fun one!
4/30/24
Aaaand we're off, sprouts now appearing
- Plant 1 looking good, already seeing second leaves forming
- Plant 2 not so good, has helmet head, we'll see how she grows (this is why 2 seeds were sprouted, I'm only going to keep 1)
Conditions:
- light schedule is 18/8, 6 AM- 12 AM
- Tent checked at 6:06 am
- Temp: 67.6, RH 67%
- humidifier set to run at 80% RH, so real RH is likely higher in tent
- humidity domes still in place on seedlings
- No water as coco was still moist
Week 2 kicking off
- tent temps and RH staying stable (67-75 degrees F, 72% RH)
- Watering each day with light nutrient solution, keeping soil moist
- Will mix in regular water every third day and keep checking runoff PPM and pH
- Plant 1 looks best, developing OK
-Plant 1 Details
- Second set of leaves coming in
- Very slight discoloration on leaves, seems to be improving since starting feeding
- Plant 2 developing, but smaller than Plant 1
-Plant2 Details
- Second set of leaves looks like one might be stunted
- Looks like some damage from the helmet head
- Color ok
- No excessive stretching, keeping plants rotating every day or two to keep growth straight
5/9/24
- Things progressing nicely
- Roots visible in the drain holes of both cups
- Third set of leaves coming in on both plants
- Plant 1: Looking good, some crinkling around the edges of first set of leaves, but ok otherwise
- Plant 2: one of the second set of leaves didn't come in due to some damage, but third set coming in. Plant generally smaller than Plant 1, but looks healthy
5/11/24
- Third set of leaves and all branch nodes are coming in
- Tent conditions stable
- Light 350 PPFD at leaves
Plant 1:
- Small bit of deceleration on one of the first true leaves, all others looking OK
- runoff measurements: 5.5 pH, 990 PPM
Plant 2:
- New growth looking good, but mangled second set of leaves seem to be slowing growth a bit
- Generally smaller than Plant 1
- Runoff measurements: 5.7 pH, 1020 PPM
5/16/24
- Ending the week by repotting Plant 1 into final 5 gal. fabric pot
- Watering with just pH water and CalMag
- Plant looking great, nice green leaves, no sign of burn or discoloration
- Plant up to 5.5" in height
- Nodes coming in nicely
- Light at 450 PPFD at top of leaves
5/17/24
Beginning week 3 of veg
- Plant in final 5 gal fabric pot
- Slight increase in PPM for feeding
- 5th nodes coming in
- Plant looking healthy, green leaves, reasonable amount of stretch but not a runt
- Runoff pH at 5.6 and PPM very high, a lot of this is due to the fresh coco in the new pot
- Light at 450 PPFD, 18" away from top of plant
- Temps and humidity steady, with about a 7 degree F swing between night and day
5/19/24
- 5th set of leaves coming in
- Seeing some brown spots on the first and second set of leaves, but other growth looks good so not terribly concerned- these will be pruned off for the mainlining anyway
- Stem developing nicely and starting to thicken up
- Keeping the feed water pH slightly higher to keep the runoff pH up (around 5.8), PPM continues to fall off as the new coco is settling
5/22/24
- New growth coming in well
- Some serious browning and curling of some of the old leaves. A couple of things seem to be going on- while the runoff pH is generally around 5.7, the symptoms seem to indicate a high pH, so I'm going to keep going with pH feed around 6 to keep it stable.
- The other issue was light- the plant grew, and I was not taking measurements often enough. I noticed the leaves praying up and took a measurement and it was at 750 PPFD at the leaves! Dimmed the lights to get back to 350 last night and today, the plant seemed much happier. Going to keep an eye on it.
- Runoff pH around 5.7 and PPM around 1100
- Watering every day, alternating days of pH water and feeding
- Plant is almost ready to be topped, but going to give it a few more to make sure the leaf issue is stable
5/24/24
Welcome to week 4! Plant is recovering from the brown leaf issue and the excessive light, so she got her first haircut. This plant is going to be mainlined, and since it's in the same tent as a White Widow that is a week behind (see the other diary), I think I might top this one three times and the other only 2 so they can be flipped to flower at the same time.
- Light at 350 PPFD at leaf top
- Runoff pH fairly stable around 5.8, PPM around 1000
- Watering every day, alternating one day with feed, one day without
- Plant had 6 modes when topped
- Topped down to third node and removed all leaves and nodes above and below the third
- Trying a different training approach with the plant ring, making a grid with the plant wire then will be tying the plant to that. The ring is attached loosely to the fabric pot to keep the plant from pulling it up.
5/26/24
Plant recovering from topping really well. The old fan leaves are not getting any better, of course, but the new growth is green and healthy, and turning toward the light as it should.
- Second set of nodes on the branches coming in
- Was initially worried about her being a too compact to train well, but her wingspan is really good and I think the mainline training will turn out pretty well with this strain
- Continuing with same watering and feeding schedule, alternating days of water and feed
- Light and tent conditions staying steady and stable
- Making slight adjustments to the training each day to keep her flat
5/28/24
Continuing to do really well after the topping, second set of nodes coming in nicely and plant is developing a good wingspan.
- No changes to tent conditions or watering/feeding schedules
- Plant taking about .5 gal of water each day and producing a fair amount of runoff (which I'm saving and giving to my outdoor garden)
5/30/24
Keeping on the training adjustments to keep plant nice and flat, things looking fine and stable.
- Bouncing back from the topping as well as could be, 4th set of nodes coming in
- Second topping should be able to happen in a few more days
- No change to feed and water schedule, tent conditions stable
- Light now at 400 PPFD, plants seem happy
5/31/24
Going into Week 5, this is probably my favorite part of the grow because it's so hands-on with the plants with the training and topping. Never a dull moment!
- Growth going nicely, should be able to do the second topping this week.
- Touching up LST each day to keep plant flat and low while getting it to spread out. This plant seems to be taking it pretty well and the final base of the canopy should wind up being just about as wide as the pot, so lots of room to spread out
- Turned off the humidifier in the tent as the transpiration from the plants plus the runoff in the basins is keeping things in a good range for now.
- Sticking with the same feed/water routine and amounts as last week and will keep it going like that through the rest of veg.
- Plant seems to be starting to take up more water now
- Runoff pH around 5.8 and PPM consistently in the mid-700s
- Seeing a little minor discoloration on the tips of two of the oldest leaves, but not on new growth and doesn't seem to be spreading or getting worse. Will watch it, but not overly worried at the moment.
6/2/24
- Plant looks good and healthy, continuing to spread out nicely
- Should be ready for second topping in the next couple of days, going to try to wait a little longer to let the White Widow in the same tent catch up a little bit
- Runoff pH and PPM holding fairly steady at 5.8 and 700 PPM
- Plant starting to take up a bit more water now
- Saw some condensation on touching leaves, so turned up the vent fan a bit to pull in more air and bring down RH
- Raised LEDs to keep space, PPFD still measuring around 400 at leaf tops
- Plant staying nicely flat, touching up LST ties each day to keep it that way
6/4/24
Things continue to move along nicely, no surprises, and she continues to grow well.
- Touched up LST ties daily to keep plant flat and spread out
- Maintaining same water and feed schedule
- Runoff pH and PPM holding fairly steady at around 5.8 and 643, going to slightly raise pH in the feed water
- Taking up more water now, lots of canopy
- Turned up vent fan a bit more to try to push humidity down below 70% (currently at 74%)
- Ready for second topping, should do this in the next day or two
6/5/24
- Gave her a second topping today and secured the LST
- Fed with 960 PPM, 6.7 pH water to bring medium pH up a bit
- Runoff was 6.0 on the nose and 560 PPM
- Humidity this morning down to 71%
6/7/24
Hello, Week 6 of veg! Recovery from second topping moving along nicely, everything recovering well from the second topping and filling in nicely while still staying very flat. For those interested, the mainlining technique is from Nebula Haze at https://www.growweedeasy.com/manifold - this has given me great results in the past and varies just slightly from the OG mainlining technique.
- Continuing with same water and feed schedule- watering every day, feeding every other day
- Fed higher pH water today and yesterday to bring the medium pH up a bit
- Runoff pH and PPM at 5.9 and 604 respectively
- Light still at 400 PPFD, lights about 24" from top of canopy
- Daily minor adjustments of LST to plant ring and grid to keep things flat
- Will probably go for one more week of veg, then flip to 12/12, but we'll see how both plants in the tent are doing
- New growth looking nice and green, some older growth has some minor chlorosis, but that won't be around long since they will be defoliated when flipping, so not worried about these
6/10/24
Not a ton of updates as things are just steady on and no real issues. Plant continues to fill out nicely and is ready for a good defoliation when the 12/12 flip happens at the end of this week.
- Regular touch-ups of LST ties, but now starting to let the main colas turn up to get ready for the flowering stretch
- Footprint and canopy shape and height are good- nice and flat with decent horizontal space for how it will fill up the tent
- No change to water or feed schedule
- Runoff pH and PPM at 5.8 and 580 respectively, PPM trend suggests a heavier feeding won't be a problem, so might start to double up feeding days
- Taking up more water and nuts now
6/12/24
Steady as she goes, getting close to flipping at the end of the week. Starting to let the colas and tips start to extend upwards now that the mainline is established.
- LST is in place and should be good to go for flower now.
- Plant is starting to get thirstier
- Plant is really ready for a good defoliation before the flip to flower, as the canopy is getting really dense and think.
- Leaves are very healthy and green, looks good. Stalk is thickening well and branches look robust and solid.
- Starting to make a change to the water/feed schedule with 2 days of feed then 1 day of plain pH water
- Runoff pH and PPM at 5.8 and 617 respectively, so feeding a bit more going into flower should be fine
6/14/24-
Tent has been flipped to 12/12 and a major defoliation. Plant is 10" high, but lots of horizontal spread, so the flowering stretch will dramatically increase the hight from where it is now, but should leave lots of vertical space in the tent between the canopy and the lights.
- Major defoliation, removed the large old fan leaves and most of the leaves inside the plant or that were touching. Left a "skirt" of leaves around the outside both to keep the plant healthy and so it has some additional leaves left, but also as a bit of an "early warning system" in case there are any nutrient or stress issues.
- After the defoliation, you can see the plant structure with the mainline much more clearly (see before and after pics)
- Slight modification to feed, but going to keep with a feed schedule of 2 days of feed then 1 day of water. Will adjust based on runoff values.
- Runoff pH and PPM at 5.9 and 554 respectively
- Other tent conditions stable
6/16/24
Smooth sailing into flower, plant is starting to stretch, picking up about 1" per day. Filling back in after defoliation, but still plenty of light and air penetration.
- Water feed schedule is now 2 days of feed then 1 day of plain water
- Runoff pH and PPM at 5.9 and 631 respectively
- Tent conditions stable, though humidity is slightly ticking up as the leaves come back in
- Plant continues to take about .75 gal of water per watering with around 10% runoff
6/18/24
The stretch keeps rolling and the plant has confirmed that it's female. Four days after the defoliation for the flip, and it's almost completely filled back in, so doing well and rolling on!
- Slightly bending some of the stems to keep everything as flat and even as possible
- Continuing with same feed and water schedule, plant is taking up more nutes and water now
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.1 and 645 respectively
- Humidity in tent creeping up as the plant fills back in
- Turned on second fan to keep air moving
6/21/24
Going into Week 2 of flower, things are moving right along. Plant looks healthy and is very lush, the stretch continues with about 1" of growth per day. Canopy staying nice and flat and the mainlining has done very well. Next week will be another big defoliation and lolipopping as needed.
- Feeding two days, then 1 day of plain pH water
- light PPFD at 700 and most intense spot
- Runoff pH and PPM at 5.9 and 703 respectively
- Tent environment in upper 70s during day, upper 60s at night, humidity in mid to upper 60s
- 2 oscillating fans going in tent
6/23/24
The first pistils are appearing! Everything looking solid, no issues at the moment.
- Plant is taking up more water and nutrients, added a third day of feeding since the runoff PPM is showing more uptake
- Runoff pH and PPM at 5.9 and 649 respectively
- Using 6.2 pH water is geeking the runoff pH consistently around 5.9 at the moment, so things are in a stable zone and pattern for now
6/25/24
Stretch continues, plant up to about 17" now. No issues, everything green and healthy, pistils developing, will get a big defoliation at the end of this week.
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.0 and 653 respectively
- Lights at 700 PPFD at canopy
6/27/24
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.0 and 605
- Plant looking green and healthy, bud sites starting to develop more substantially
- Will do a major defoliation in the next day or two to help them get more light and air further down on the plant
6/29/24
Week 3 of flower, time to dial back the hands-on part a bit.
- Major defoliation. More aggressive this time than last grows, I'll be more aggressive in making sure all bud sites stay in the light this time to try to reduce larf.
- Removed plant ring and all LST ties as they have done their bit
- Keeping with watering every day, 3 days with feed, one day without
- Adjusted light to keep at 700 PPFD at top of canopy and 24" of distance
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.0 and 695 respectively
- Moved a fan lower in the tent to try to blow up through the plants to keep air moving. A second fan is blowing over the canopy
7/1/24
- Added scrog net. The mainline has created a great shape, but the net helps keep things supported and spread out at the canopy.
- Plucking a few leaves as the plant fills back in from the big defoliation. Going to be fairly aggressive here to make sure all of the bud sites stay in the light.
- Budlets developing well
- Stretch seems to be slightly slowing
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.0 and 768
- PPFD at 700 at canopy
7/3/24
- Continuing to pluck leaves as they fill in and block light and air from bud sites, may need to do a little more clean up on the very bottom of the plant.
- Vertical stretch definitely starting to slow down
- Budlets continuing to develop nicely
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.1 and 844
- PPFD at 700 at canopy
7/5/24
Week 4 of flower, honestly, things start to get a little dull now- the intense hands on part is basically over as the flowering stretch ends, so now it's just about maintaining and coasting. But things are looking good, so no complaints!
- Continuing to pluck leaves as they fill in and block light and air from bud sites, but only a few now as the stretch is slowing down
- No stickiness yet and only a minor smell
- Vertical stretch nearing the end, but still ongoing a bit
- Budlets continuing to develop nicely, good light and breeze penetration into the plant
- Starting to see signs of frost getting ready to develop on some leaves
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.0 and 763
- PPFD at 700 at canopy
7/7/24
- More light leaf plucking as they grow in a shade out bud sites
- Vertical stretch is done but leaf growth is still ongoing
- Things are just starting to get a bit sticky
- Bud sites all looking good and seeing signs of fattening
- Minor frost development ongoing
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.0 and 785 respectively
7/9/24
No real news is good news, everything moving along well.
- Leaves look healthy, minimal leaf plucking to keep all bud sites exposed to light and air
- Resin production picking up, and smell building slightly
- Some minor darkening of some pistils
- Medium pH is shifting slightly upwards as plant changes gears, so shifting water pH down slightly to accommodate
- Gave plant 6.0 pH water with no feed, sticking to 3 days of feed, 1 day of plain pH water
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.2 and 719
7/12/24
Week 5, everything moving along well, no issues- just coasting toward the finish at this point.
- Plant looking healthy and green
- Vertical stretch has stopped and no more defoliation needed, just tucking and moving things out of the way at this point.
- Good air and light exposure to bud sites, some minor pistil darkening, buds starting to bulk up a bit more
- Resin production picking up, plant getting stickier
- Smell still pretty subdued, but present
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.0 and 764
- Plant is a bit thirstier and is wanting a slightly lower pH water to keep the medium pH at 6.0
- Feed schedule is still watering every day, 3 days of feed, 1 day of plain water, although I might slip in an extra day of feed now and then depending on what the runoff is showing
- Light measuring ~700 PPFD at the plant tops
7/15/24
- Frost development is picking up
- Buds continuing to bulk up
- Smell growing but still fairly subtle
- A couple of leaves at the very bottom of the plant that are out of the light are fading, nothing unexpected or concerning
- Medium pH continues to drift up as flower goes on, adjusting water pH down to keep it around 6.0
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.2 and 756
7/17/24
- Plant starting to get very sticky
- Scent picking up, notable notes of pine
- Buds bulking up, this should be a good yielder
- Despite the aggressive defoliation, it's still a bit thick in the middle- not going to pluck more at this point unless absolutely necessary, but making a note to go even further next time
- Continuing with watering every day, 4 days of feed, 1 day of plain water
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.1 and 756, both values are holding pretty steady
7/19/24
Helloooooo week 6 of flower! Things are developing, buds are bulking up, frost development is picking up, and stickiness and smell are building up. Picked up a microscope to get a closer look at the trichomes as they are developing and it should be a great help watching the buds develop and mature.
- Plant looks very healthy, some bottom leaves that are not getting light are fading, but everything else looks very happy
- Lots of frost coming in, very little color in the pistils so far
- Plant getting very sticky
- Trichomes are already starting to look a bit cloudy on the very tops
- Light still around 700 PPFD at the tops
- Watering every day, feeding 4 days then 1 day of plain water
- Plant continuing to prefer lower pH water to keep the runoff and medium around 6.0
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.0 and 827
7/21/24
- A few of the lower leaves getting no light have faded and fallen off- still pretty green, just some self pruning, rest of plant looks fantastic
- Smell continues to build and frost development still carrying on
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.1 and 809
7/24/24
- Plant getting very sticky, smell still relatively low but definitely present
- Trichomes on top getting cloudy, no amber, pistils still almost all white
- Bud development progressing, can see them bulking up, lots of frost
- No change to feed and water schedule
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.1 and 832
7/26/24
Wheeeeee- Week 7 of flower! Everything going smoothly as we're getting close to the home stretch.
- Starting to see a bit more fade in some of the fan leaves, buds look great
- Buds building up nicely, pistils still pretty much all white
- Opened an AC vent in the room to see if I can bring the temp down a bit and try to get some purple to develop
- Feed schedule the same: watering every day, 4 days of feed, 1 day of plain pH water
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.0 and 791
7/28/24
- Some very nice looking buds are forming
- Still no real color on the pistils, but they are starting to pull in slightly now
- And going to close the AC vent during the day and open it at night to pul those temps down a bit more and create a wider swing between day and night to try to get some purple
- Changing to watering everyday, but 3 days of feed then 1 day of plain water
- Runoff pH is ticking up higher, so going to give it lower pH water to keep it in the zone
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.2 and 804
7/31/24
- Some very nice looking buds developing as the stacking continues
- Still no color on the pistils, might be starting to see some signs of purple in the buds, though it's still very minor
- Starting to see a bit of fade in the upper leaves, moved light up by 1" to reduce stress and also try to replicate the fading sun in autumn
- Keeping AC vent closed during day and open at night, seems to be pushing the nighttime temp down to around 65 degrees while daytime is still around 77
- Changing feed and water schedule to watering every day, 3 days of feed then 1 day of plain pH water
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.1 and 836
8/2/24
Hello, Week 8, you beautiful thing. Getting close to the homestretch, making some minor adjustments in feeding and trying to land this flight smoothly.
- Bud stacking still ongoing, not really any change in color in pistils
- Might be starting to see some minor signs of purple in the buds
- Seeing a little light stress in the upper-most leaves, going to raise the lights by an inch or two to reduce the stress and simulate the fall light fade. Looking very green and healthy on lower leaves.
- Plants still thirsty, continuing to want slightly lower pH water
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.1 and 775
8/4/24
- Fade continuing on the leaves, nothing too significant, but continuing
- Trichomes beginning to cloud up on lower buds
- A few more pistils getting dark, but not many- still the white ones are starting to pull in
- Buds still bulking up
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.0 and 751
8/7/24
- Buds continue to bulk up really nicely
- Seeing some very minor fox tailing on the tops, so reduced the lights very slightly- nothing serious, but want to stay ahead of it
- Some more pistils darkening, but still largely white- starting to pull in more and more
- Not seeing a ton of lavender, but the frost is pretty thick on the buds, so there might be more than there appears to be
- Trichomes on all buds going cloudy, not seeing much if any amber yet
- Nutrient uptake slowing quite a bit, plant still thirsty, but runoff PPM is not dropping very quickly
- Feed scheduled reduced- watering every day, one day of feed, then one day of plain pH water
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.0 and 850
8/9/24
Week 9 of flower- looks like we're entering the harvest window! Coasting and maintaining a bit from here on out, probably one more week before harvest, but we'll see what happens.
- Starting to see a few more dark pistils, but most are still white. All are starting to pull in and tighten a bit.
- Trichomes on lower buds are mostly cloudy, still not seeing any real amber trichomes, even on the tops
- Smell is finally getting fairly strong
- Leaf fade on tops is picking up
- Moved light up a bit further to continue to decrease light and reduce light stress
- Plant barely taking up nutrients now, but still thirsty- going to be giving mainly plain water from here on out.
- Runoff pH and PPM at 6.0 and 848
8/11/24
Day 100 of this grow!
- Amber trichomes are starting to show up, trichomes on lowest viable buds are mostly cloudy
- Harvest will be this week some time
- Flushing for 4 days now, will keep going until harvest, plant has stopped taking up any nutrients
- Runoff pH and PPM at 5.9 and 743
8/14/24
Just waiting to harvest at this point- probably in the next couple of days over the weekend 😃
- Fade continues, looking steady, buds looking good
- Amber trichomes present, but not excessive
- No nutrients seem to be being taken up from the coco at this point, but plant still thirsty
- Runoff pH and PPM at 5.9 and 630
8/16/24
HARVEST!!!!!!😻
I will update this page over the next month as the plants go through their drying and curing process. Drying will take 2 weeks, then another 2 weeks for curing in jars.
- Plants chopped and major fan leaves removed, but otherwise will be left for a dry trim
- Plants hung in grow tent with the lights off and fans running
- Humidifier in tent set to maintain 60% humidity
- AC vent in the room will be left open to keep ambient temp as low as possible
- Plants will hang for around 2 weeks for a slow, gradual dry
8/23/24
- Drying progressing very nicely
- About 3 days in, the expected hay smell came and disappeared in about 36 hours
- Buds drying well, still no snap in the branches
- Tent temp staying between 68-72 degrees, humidity coming down to around 63% now as the plants dry out
- Probably another 5-7 days of very slow drying to go
8/30/24
Was really hoping to be able to trim and jar everything up today, but we've had a really rainy and humid week and the ladies just aren't quite ready.
- Not getting branch snap yet, but close
- Humidity is hanging around 63%, drier would be nice, but it's ok
- Temp has been around 73 degrees (where I have the AC set), cooler would be nice but it's ok
- Trimmed and ground up a bud to try it, and indeed it needs to be about 3-5% drier, but it ground up really well
- Buds are incredibly sticky
- Tasted great and was very smooth- even though a few more days of drying are needed, the low slow dry is letting them mature really well and this is going to be a great batch
- Hopefully 3-5 days more and we have a dry spell coming up, so getting close
9/3/24
Trim day! Finally the humidity eased up enough to get it across the home stretch- got the branch snap, and started in with the trimming.
- Interesting changes while drying, there were not a ton of amber pistils when harvested, but they all turned while drying
- The CannaBrush once again is amazing, but works best on the dense tops, the lower, looser buds need scissors
- Going to give it a 2-week cure with daily burping
- Ground up a bud and it's moisture and texture was perfect, looking forward to seeing how it matures in the jar
