Ohhh Boy, exciting time in my grow tent this week😃. Added a few new grow toys this week (Merry Christmas to me, lol) A digital Wi-Fi microscope, and an INKBIRD ITC-608T, Temp/ Humidity, Monitor/controller. The girls are showing their fall fade colours this week. Buds are swelling, pistils turning orange, and trichomes are turning cloudy. Been flushing with dechloranated tapwater Ph'd to 6.5. The tent smells delicious!!!!😋, a pine/lemony citrus smell, and I find myself sniffing my fingers long after working on the girls😍. These girls are quickly heading towards harvest! Grow question regarding harvest timing to follow. Hope everyone had a great week 🙏.

Grow Questions

Over the next several weeks...What should I expect to see, regarding the fan and sugar leaves. Do the nutes in the leaves get consumed for flower production? I don't want to freak out over any change in appearance. I plan on only using pH'd water till harvest. Thanks 4 the advice

the plant will only canabalise itself during the flower stretch if it doesn t find its nutes in the soil or through it's foliage. The rate at which the plant will seek out nutrients depends on its metabolism which in turn depends on the light schedule and the "vapor pressure deficit" (VPD). You're 10/10 VPD-wise, and your light schedule is intense actually so you can expect BIG growth ! Big growth means more nutes needed, simple as that. Therefore you should for sure expect to see some yellowing, starting with the bottom fan leaves. Since you're not going to be giving any more nutrients, you need to keep an eye on what's going on - there will be "expected yellowing", but you need to stay on top of it in case you run into som "unexpected deficiencies or related problems... does this answer your question at all? hope this helps ! 🚀

This being my first harvest, I ask the following. When to Harvest? What % amber trichomes? Are trichomes the only factor? I'm not looking for couchlock! Darkness nap, before harvest? What process do you guys and gals out in GD land use? Thanks for sharing your Knowledge. DeaneR🙏

Congrats on the cool new kit ! Yeah trichomes are the only thing that matters, after all pistills will turn Amber once you chop , and how quickly or even if they turn Amber is strain dependent . So you want to check out the trichomes at minimum 40x or more, 60x is more comfortable and 100x looks like an alien planet. You're at something like 60% cloudy right now, So keep checking daily because the trichomes can turn overnight . So for maximum thc as you know you want all cloudy no clear, and for that it's better to wait until you see the first Amber trichomes. A lot of the time a plant will ripen faster on the main cola rather than all over at the same time, if that's your case harvest the main first then the rest a couple weeks later. The dark period is basically so that there are less photosynthesis chemicals present at the chop which really helps with the cure, 12-24hrs is all you need, more than that you're likely to mess with the trychomes but boost terpene production. Remember though - thc production happens mostly during the cure ! The cure is very important ! The cure starts the moment you chop until the bud s humidity reaches 50%, light is a no go, try to chop in the dark and jar in the dark to preserve the very sensitive terpenes. Chop, then hang the plant whole, drying period is done when the little popcorn buds snap off the stem audibly . Manicure and jar the buds, inspecting them daily for one to two weeks (remove them completely from the jar then back into the jar again) , then weekly for the next four weeks. You can add boveda packs after the first week or two I be used the 62% ones but I'll be trying the 58% ones next. A bit more than what you asked for, but I hope this helps ! Good luck crossing the finish line ! 🚀

@CRiSPrGrow, thanks, I understand that my nutes are not chelated and readily available to the plants, however, these plants have been started from seed in amended Promix HP Myco. I only add water, and a bit of cal/mag. The micro biology life should be in the media by now, right? I also understand that the nutrients I am using are not immediately taken by the plant like in a hydro system. I will look into your suggestion of enzy. humic + fluvic. The goal is...help the roots, process the nutes! Can't post pics...the gals are sleeping💤 I'm trying to keep things simple for my first grow...see how it goes, and learn and adjust the next go. Thanks for the advice👊.

@DeaneR, worst thing you can do is over fert, sometimes leaves die and thats normal, sometimes leaves die and your plant wilts lol, i cant tell if you dont put up the pics you know 😄 the way your fertilising now seems intelligent to me though... just remember that ferts dont go directly to the plant, they need to be broken down first either by bacteria or by chelation agents... worm casting will help, but enzymes or humic + fluvic acid are better.

@CRiSPrGrow, Thanks for the info! Today I am seeing the oldest fan leaves starting to yellow in places. I topped dressed with powder time release Gaia Green 4-4-4 and 2-8-4 fertilizer at the start of week 5, and worm castings 5 days later. Thinking of retop dress with 2-8-4 at the start of week 7 to carry the girls through to harvest? I lack the experience to tell, just what is deficiencies, and what is normal in flower😕. I hope I have the girls soil setup to carry them through, trying not to over fert.

CRiSPrGrow
CRiSPrGrow
@DeaneR, good question D! So basically you do want to time your chop accordingly : if your rh is low <45%, you can chop the day after your last watering; for rh 45-59% something like wait two to three days depending; rh >60% then you want to wait four to five days after the last watering... Not super important but it does help the drying bit 👊🏻

@CRiSPrGrow, Thanks sooo much. Great info. I have a darkroom for drying in my basement...nice and cool, have to check the humidity though. Definately have to stay ontop my duties down the homestretch. 62% govitas in the mail, One litre mason jars onhand, and I have a couple smalll hygrometers I will keep in the jars to watch RH%. Going to hang whole and dry trim. At cutdown, what moisture should the soil be? Thanks again!✌️

Hello bro , 25% of relative humidity isn't good at that stage you should be at least between 50 and 60%. Cheers 😄
DeaneR
DeaneR
@OutForReal, turns out my Hygrometer was way off! I was actually around 45%RH. Using an INKBIRD controller/monitor now, and a couple of cheapo hygrometers. All 3 reading the same.👍. Now able to contrl RH%.
DeaneR
DeaneR
@OutForReal, Unfortunately I'm in a winter climate with forced air natural gas heating. Real hard to raise humidity. I am running a humidifier in the tent, and fill it twice daily. Not sure just how accurate my hygrometer is... with 2 fans moving air in the tent plus the carbon filter fan. Thanks for the advice! 👍

For Sure She will change. Buds will swell,Trichomes will appear on the Flowers/ Sugarleaves. leaves will fade/ get autumn clours, Some leaves get yellow/ brown. She will end her circle of Life if Trichomes are milky/ amber, Hairs are orange/ brown/ smelling and got alot of glue/,Leaves get Autumn colours

To answer your question: Ideally you want to harvest when most thricomes are cloudy. I myself prefer to avoid amber thricomes. It is not the only harvest cue, but it is the most accurate. The other way would be by the color of the pistils.

@DeaneR, That’s the first I’ve heard the name, and I suppose it’s appropriately respectful, as it cannot be Lamb’s Bread unless it’s 100% Sativa. Sounds like a great combo.
growdoctordc
growdoctordc
@DeaneR, There is little further bud growth as the trichomes mature. If anything, they may appear to shrink up a tiny bit. I doubt weight is reduced though, but that’s only my guess. I’d have to grow identical clones, and harvest them at different times, and weigh the dry result, which I’ve never done I’ve harvested at various stages, I’ve done a bit of hydro, and soil both in and outdoors. Outdoor is a pain in the ass, and I let my outdoors crop go wild, so the girls are seeded at harvest. Cleaning seeds is also a pain, but the high is sublime, and I have thousands of seeds every season. It’s not the ultra high THC, punch you in the face high you often get with lab grown, but it’s extremely pleasant. I prefer it for everyday use.
DeaneR
DeaneR
@growdoctordc, at that stage...50%+, how much has the bud swelled compared to the first onset of amber trichomes? Inquiring minds want to know😶

@DeaneR, ok just seems like a crap ton of nutrients so 4X7= 28 tablespoons in a 7 gal pot ? How much would I put in for 284 bloom Gaia green . I’ve got 444 all purpose and 284 bloom both are Gaia green dry powder. Thanks let me know I don’t wanna fry my plants haha! Teach me mr Miyagi 🙏 I’m doing autoflowers using the promix hp like you did in this grow . I’m going to be doing it outdoors

@JayrocAutos, Actually 4 Tablespoons of Gaia fertilizer / Gallon of media, as per the label instructions. If growing Autoflowers, doubling up in 7 gallons will work just fine. Goodluck with your grow👊.

@DeaneR, awesome that you're a drummer. I am too! I've been playing since the age of 3 and I play all over the US. Lots of fun. Actually, I don't know why my brain pulled up Freddy Hubbard. My only guess is that I've been asked to learn a few of his songs for a jazz combo I'm subbing for. Anyway you're absolutely right! Jimmy Smith originally released that song on Root Down (and Get It) the album and Paul played drums on the original track. He also played for Lawrence Welk. It is his fill that is sampled in the Beastie Boys song. That is how I figured out who was playing originally. LOL! I've got so many songs bouncing around in my brain at this point I'm starting to really mix things up. Newest drum related purchase: the new Rogers Dynosonic 6X14" in white marine pearl. The only Dynosonics I have encountered up to this point have all been metal, but they re-released an all maple shell with reinforcing rings and I wanted to try it. I've got a 1964 Ludwig LM400 Suprasensitive and a more recent Ludwig Black Beauty suprasensitive which both operate on a similar principle, but they discontinued that model the last time I checked. I have some other snares from the era that were trying to come up with a similar concept including a Slingerland TDR and a couple other things. I can geek out on this stuff all day so I better just stop! Thanks for the refresh on my brain!

@@Jondalar, Interesting. I've been messing around on drums for over 35 years. I believe Paul Humphry played the skins on this track. It was a long jam session that I edited down. This is Jimmy Smith's rendition from 1972. I wanted to use the instrumental remixed by the Beastie Boys on 'Ill Communication', (1994), but could not find it. Johnny Klein played drums on LW from 1951-1975..

Few people concern themselves with soil moisture content at harvest. I’m impressed. Not sure why, but it indicates a thinker, and I’m all for that! I let my soil dry out after an extra long flush, but that’s because I do a combo dry/cure that begins with the bagging up of the root ball, and inverting the whole plant. This slows the dry, and I believe enhances flavor. By the time she is dry, she tastes great! No jar curing required
growdoctordc
growdoctordc
@DeaneR, So they ditched the soil but kept the roots! Fascinating We don’t truly know what keeping roots on the plant do during the dry, but being as they are the heart of the plant, it seems intuitive that they contain compounds, alkaloids and flavor. My non scientific findings suggest it’s a good idea Thanks @DeaneR for that story
DeaneR
DeaneR
@growdoctordc, I watched a show that was filmed in Jamaica. The farmers uprooted the plant, held it on the horizontal, then proceeded to belt the stalk at the rootball with the backside of a machette, till there was no soil in the roots.

@Mrs_Larimar, not sure, all plants are getting the same light. This light has good even spread. The oldest plants are the most affected, but also in the windiest part of the tent. So...shoulder shrug....so many variables😚
