Skunk Hero RBX1 - Organic grow in OTC Living Soil Setup
Today I started the Ethos Skunk Hero RBX1 grow. We will be testing out the Vivosun Seed Starter with heating pad as my ambient is still cold and dry (64 degrees and 36 RH)
Medium is an over the counter mixed living soil that is 3 different layers in 7 gallon fabric pots.
Base layer - 2.5 solo cups (1.5 pounds) of Natures Living Soil. Then Fox Farms Ocean Forest to 1/3 level. Mixed and watered to activate the living soil
Middle layer - straight FFOF
Top layer - 1/3 coco coir and 2/3 FFOF
This soil mixture will be assembled and cook in the tent to stimulate the microbe growth and develop a healthy and hot soil while the seeds are germinating and getting through the first couple weeks of growth.
The goal is to run an organic grow to flower with minimal inputs. This is a "just add water" setup but I'm sure there will be some amendments and top dressing along the way.
Plants will be topped and LST applied in veg.
Tent- Cool Grows 4x4
Light - HLG 600 R Spec
Vent - 6" vivosun inline fan w/charcoal
2X vivosun fans
Thanks for checking it out!
Heres to a successful grow!
We are on day 6 from planting - 6/5/24
The Ethos Skunk Hero rbx1 sprouted in just 3 days from planting the seed. The vivosun Seed Starter worked amazing on this one.
The Seedsman peyote wifi I germinated with it still has not emerged yet.
We already have our first set of true leaves emerging and I moved it to its final pot already to establish roots, the tap root was already quite long. And I didnt want to tangle the root in the seed tray holes
Covering with a clear dome for humidity and heat retention. Light measured at 236 ppfd under the dome.
I can tell this girl is gonna be a grower. Just have to be careful with my watering in the large pot.
Week 2 was smooth, bounced back from transplant and starting to grow. Added a humidifier to the grow tent too as it's been very dry here, around 35% rh. She's looking happy.
Watered once with a solo cup worth of RO water th week.
Week 3 in the books. Pushing out the 4th set of leaves and growing well.
I imagine we will do the topping in the next week.
Light watering this week about 2 solo cups.
Temps and humidity have been a constant battle but been able to maintain around 75 degrees and 50rh .
Week 4 went pretty well. She is beautiful to look at.
She grew a ton, very short node spacing it's only 7 inches tall but 13 inches wide and has 5 nodes (after topping).
Unfortunately my VPD got super high one day as my humidifier cut out and she soaked up a bunch of water and has a bit a nutrient burn now.
I just watered with a half gallon to flush some nutrients down. hopefully we won't have that problem again I have a better humidifier on my list.
I have not fed any additional nutes. The soil is very hot and I think the roots are in to the super soil layer now.
I did have to go ahead and do the topping since I'll be out of town a few days and she was pushing the 6th node already. Not ideal with the nutrient burn but she seems to be resilient.
The grow room is starting to smell already. Wet skunk.
HOT HOT HOT soil. Her leaves are definitely getting burned and are super dark green. I am going to have to continue on with the grow for learning sake hopefully we can still make through flower without issues or herm. I still have not fed any nutrients at all.
This week I did a couple defol sessions of lower leaves and then another round to remove some of the giant fan leaves covering the bud sites trying to grow.
I did a little lst to get those lower branches out in the light.
I think ill give it one more full week in veg to soak up some more of the nitrogen in the soil and then flip to 12/12 lights.
Have learned a ton already on my first grow. Can't wait to see it through to the end.
Light defol
Added the ScrOG net
Lst a bit to get side branches out away from main stems
Growing pretty well still, seeing a slight reduction Iin burning of new leaves. Hopefully as we move in to flowering stretch that will fade out.
Still no added nutrients.
She's making a nice come back. New growth is lighter green and not showing nutrient burn. She is in the stretch now and starting to put out a few white pistols. No signs of herm after inspection.
I will probably add some nutrients after this week to promote bloom.
Slowly turning up the light over the next 2 weeks as well.
Another week down. New growth looks great. I plan to pick up some bloom nutrients this week, schedule got a little hectic and didn't get time last week.
Stretch is done and the bud sites are starting to fatten and grow, lots of pistols coming in now.
Everything is looking really good right now.
This week she started to fatten up a bit and the first trichomes are coming in. Everything is looking good, there are a lot of tightly spaced nodes on the 4 main colas. I think they will be stacked 3 weeks from now.
I have some bloom nutrients and cal mag coming early this week. No signs of deficiencies right now but want to be prepared. This organic/super soil grow has had no inputs at all yet.
Chugging along
Unfortunately she started drinking way more water and dried out one day and drooped really bad. After watering and feeding she perked up but we are losing some big fans leave and have some spots showing on some others after the incident. I think she will bounce back but seems like she wants water every 2 days now.
Buds are still growing and putting out nice pistils. Lots of trichomes starting to form.
W are still 3-4 weeks out from expected harvest so I'm excited to see how much weight she puts on under this R-Spec light.
Side note - seems like she's gonna turn completly purple. Lots of areas are getting more and more purple coming in.
We are approaching the last 2 weeks and I'm confident we will make it to harvest now. She has stopped putting on wheight and I don't expect more than one or two ounces dried at this point, but I'm glad she bounced back and we didn't get a herm after all the little problems along the way. She is starting to smell a lot more. Skunk with earthy tones so far. Pistils are starting to turn red and early trichomes seeing some milky.
Will continue to update as we get through last 2 weeks and harvest.
I learned a ton with my first grow and I will be starting the next seeds soon. I plan to do a lot more lst and multiple topping sessions. The plan is to fill the tent with 2 larger plants next round. I'm going to try a different soil in my mix the FFOF was way too nitrogen rich. And I'll top dress with roots organics uprising series the whole way. Shooting for half pound or more next round.
Another week down.
I'm guessing 7-10 days till harvest.
All feeding has stopped and she is only getting water, sucking up last nutrients from lower leaves now and they are turning yellow. The trichomes are turning white and a couple amber starting to pop up here and there.
This light brought out a ton a purple on the plant. Buds are dense when squeezed but not a ton of mass, I'm curious to see the yield.
Hoping to cut her down next week.
Final days for this girl. She put on some wheight and most all trichomes are white now. Some amber here and there.
She kept putting out pistils to the end so I can't use those as an indicator. I think I'm going to chop in another 1-3 days. I did dial the light back a click and dropped to 11 hours of light to finish flower. It could probably go another week if i wanted more amber but we are definitely in the harvest window and ready to get on with next one. We stuck to an all organic grow in super soil and only had 2 small feedings of uprising bloom and a little cal/mag for the entire grow. This will be the final weekly grow update till the harvest.
She now smells of citrus and pine. No skunk coming through on this pheno. I'm sure it will change a bit after drying.
I'm still only expecting 3oz or so since she didn't grow super big. We will see.
The color is stunning on this plant. The R-spec light really brought on the purple and pink.
I planted 3 more of this strain today for the next grow. Picking the best 2 and then I will be vegging and training longer to fill up this tent. Hopefully getting a 1 pound grow next round.
I hope you get some skunk smell. My pheno wasn’t skunky; it had a neutral sweet scent after curing. During the cure, it had a rancid watermelon odor that mellowed into a sweeter scent post-cure. Great yeilds and good smoke still. I still have more seeds in hopes of finding one.
@FLCBud, I only grew one seed out because I only have room for 1 plant. Hopefully, when I move in a few years I can have a dedicated grow space for more plants. I eventually want to keep 3 to 6 mothers of my favorite grows like if I found a good skunky hero, I'd keep that indefinitely and give clones away to gromies. You're plant has a beautiful fade.
@Habosabin, yes I was hoping for some heavy skunk, we will see what happens after cure. Did go ahea and plant the other 3 seeds I had maybe I can find a good pheno. Thanks for the comment!
