I'm not sure how to add this strain to the Mephisto Genetics library. This is the first of three freebies I got from Mephisto with my order. I'm interested in this one's lineage ... seems like a lot of heavy hitters all combined for this girly.
She germinated with no problems and sprouted promptly in 2 days (2 days in the glass of water, then 2 days in the soil before she popped her head out). Aaaaaaand we're off!
Just started week 3 of growth (eg. days 14-21) ... same ol, same ol (which is good!)
It's around day 16 or 17, and I decided to go ahead and top her. I really don't know if it affects potency, but I love the way topping shapes the plant. It makes it a lot easier to deal with training (LST isn't really "low stress" if you're constantly snapping branches off, is it??). Regardless, this girl is growing nice and fast ... figured she could handle a gentle top now. Seeing how well my Pinot Noir bounced back from topping - she exploded into growth and looks oh so nummy now. Every strain is different, but hoping this one responds nicely as well. Time will tell!
Update ... near the end of week 3 .. she's really starting to move now - growing considerably every day. There's this period of time after topping a plant - where those bottom sprouts are trying desperately to peak out the top and see what's going on ... but there are a couple of ginormous fan leaves shading them from above .... so, I like to use the "staples" to gently push those fan leaves down below the sprouts ... broke one of the fan leaves - not sure it matters at this point or not. Nonetheless, she's now got good exposure to all of her "parts" ... she's going to explode over the next two weeks ... exciting times :)
I both love - and hate - this time in the growth cycle .... things kinda stand still at this point ... but it's riiiiiiight before the phase where everything explodes and seems to double in size overnight .... there are a few issues that I have concerns about ...
First, I picked the whole plant/pot up this morning and saw that the main tap root had grown straight through the fabric pot (bottom) and into the run off in the drip tray. I use a riser to keep the pot off the bottom - but the risers turned out to be part of the problem. Regardless, the roots had grown out quite a bit ... I didn't want things to start getting root rot or anything, so I snipped off the root that was hanging out. I have no idea what kind of damage that is going to do (if any). Nonetheless, I just ordered new risers that should definitely keep the pot from touching the runoff. This should make sure the roots air-prune as they're supposed to. I think this issue is one of the last major issues I'll need to correct (already dealt with the temp/humidity/airflow issues inside the tent). Anyway .... I'm rambling at this point. Thanks for reading - and sorry it was largely incoherent :)
Snipping the roots that were growing out of the pot didn't seem to hurt much ... plant has just kept on growing. From above, you can see lots of nodes .... probably only a couple of days from preflower.
2024-07-12 ... outer buds are getting taller. The center buds aren't filling in just yet ... bud this girl has a nice leaf structure - seems to let more light in - just a little tuck here and there.
Her lower branches grew pretty far - and since I kept pulling them down and letting them continue to grow "out" - it gives her a really wiiiiide canopy. The leaf-to-bud ratio is very nice - which will let virtually every bud site have nice exposure to the lights/air. She's been flowering for almost a week and I'm just now starting to see the frost creep out onto the sugar leaves .... as usual, hoping to see that increase. She stayed quite short - would have been a very bushy plant if I hadn't topped her - I think.
Toward the end of the week now .. the peach fuzz is starting to show ... yay!
She is lovely ... has a "bakery" smell to her ... sweet, kinda like a white/yellow birthday cake smell ... the frost is starting to get thicker ... and the buds are already puffing up nicely (without being too airy - although they aren't super dense, either)
Nothing special to report this week ... just watching her fatten up and get nice and sticky. She is looking beaauuuuuuutiful ... and that smell is just so sweet and lovely!
She's still a week or two away from harvest ... but I'm already excited about planting another one. The sugar has gotten so thick on this lady... and the smell is just delightful (sweet/bakery).
The buds are starting to get heavy - branches are starting to fall over ... needed to add support stakes to keep a few branches upright.
I seem to be lucky when it comes to overall yields ... if only I cared about that. I just want good smoke ... and I have yet to find that perfect strain (for me, that is). I am hopeful with this girl .. just look at those buds ... just want to lean in and take a bite out of those nuggets ... nom nom nom .... :)
It's soooooo close now .... been looking forward to this one ... can hardly wait! The frost is thick and beautiful .... branches are starting to fall over ... needed even more supports added. I don't see much amber trichomes ... but I see mostly cloudy, so I believe it's almost time (prefer more of a head buzz than body).|
The only sad part, is that the wonderful bakery smell has all but gone away :( There's more of a neutral, herbal scent now (herbs/spices). We'll see how she smells when trimmed up at the end.
I really wish the correct strain was in the list ... If I enter a custom strain, it doesn't give credit to Mephisto ... and I think it should, so I chose this as the base. This review is actually for a freebix hybrid ... Sundae Thumper x Northern Cheese Haze.
Early in flower, when the smell first came on ... I smelled a bakery ... which led me to the name: Sheet Cake ....
Then, later in flower, the sweetness went away ... still had a bakery feel to it, though ... which led me to: Cheese Danish ...
When it dried, the purple's really came out strong ... most purple plant I've ever seen (some buds looked almost black) ... so, of course I wanted the name: Purple Haze ...
Of course, I didn't expect that to be available ... which led me to: Blurple Haze ...
I thought that was a great name ... then I Googled it ... duh, someone already came up with that ... So, I thought, maybe: Blurple Cheese ... or, Blurple Lights ... wanting to give some nod to the parent lineage.
I also though that maybe: Blue Cheese Danish would work ... might just be too much of a mouthful, though ... so, back to: Cheese Danish
Not sure though ... the smell is mostly "funk" at this point ... appealing funk, but still funk ...
What name sings in your head the most out of those?
Regardless of the name ... man oh man is this a nice smoke. Strong - both in how it hits and the level of the effects. My last harvest was Pinot Noir ... very good buzz - strongest I'd had at that point ... but this is the first plant that hits me decently with just one hit ... Right now the sweet spot is around 3 tokes (for reference, my favorite dispensary strains hit plenty with one hit, maybe two).
As far as growing goes ... EXCELLENT strain ... there really weren't a lot of leaves ... it had a wonderful structure to it. She was topped - and the lower branches grew out pretty far - LST opened everything up very early on - and the minimal fan leaves meant every nuggest was exposed to air and the lights. Awesome stuff ... the yield was nice ... nothing super special - in fact, a bit less than I expected given that the nuggets are pretty dense.
It dried very slowly for 2-3 weeks (I trimmed about 2/3 of it after 2 weeks, then got lazy and didn't get around to the last 1/3 until the end of week 3). I keep the humidity steady in the dry room at around 62%.
I really can't say enough good things about this strain ... only negative is the smell mostly went away. I'm not sure if that's just what this strain does - or if it's an issue somewhere in my grow process. I will most definitely be growing this again soon (2 cycles from now, probably).
