After taking the summer off, I'm ready to start up again! Running a few beans I got out of a choice King's Tart that was hit with pollen from a Z Pointer Herm. The Wild Runtz are bag seeds. Not expecting too much out of them but it would be nice if they work out.
I'm soaking the seeds in hydrogen peroxide and water at a 4:1 ratio. They'll go into paper towels for a few days to crack the shell, then into coco that's being buffered in calmag.
Sept 4
My King's Tart seed have all sprouted and have nearly inch long tap roots. They all went into seedling bags with the buffered coco.
Sept 5
Cotys open on 2 KTs and one is about to open. Soaked 2x Wild Runtz because two seeds from Perfect Tree didn't sprout.
Sept 7
- Avg. VPD 0.97 (7 days)
- High VPD 1.26
- Low VPD 0.73
- Avg. Temp 77.8F
- High Temp 80.6F
- Low Temp 74.1F
- Avg. Humidity 70.3%
- High Humidity 76.3%
- Low Humidity 61.7%
The last of my King's Tart crosses sprouted. Looks weaker than the others but I'll give it a week and see what it does.
The Wild Runtz both sprouted in the water within 24 hrs, so I've sown those as well.
Sept 8
--------
- 1x WR sprouted
- 12ml to each KT
Sept 9
--------
- 1x BP seed was stuck, mouldy stem, thrown out
- Buffered coco for transplants (0.9 EC / 6.2 pH)
- Average conditions 76.9F / 72.7% / 0.87 kpa
Sept 10

Sept 12
---------
- Soaked pH pen for 24 hours
- BP2 still not sprouted, threw out
- 24ml each @ 0.9 EC / 6.0 pH
Sept 15
Looking good so far. Fertigation has started on the transplanted KTs. Wild Runtz are about 5 days behind. Conditions are pretty stable and right in the pocket.
- Rinsed coco with 1.1 EC / 6.1 pH

Sept 16
- Watered @ 1.1 EC / 6.1 pH (0.5L / 21c)
- Runoff @ 1.2 EC / 5.8 pH
The pH might be a touch low but that should come up after a few waterings. I haven't transplanted the last KT or either WRs because they're still too small
Sept 18
I might actually be way out of VPD range for germination and early veg. Going to aim for 0.6-0.9 kpa until late veg. Getting all sorts of conflicting info online. Say something if you know something
Sept 20
IN: 1.1 EC / 6.2 pH (.33 L)
OUT: 1.1 EC / 6.2 pH
Runoffs are good. Will start lowering pH to 5.9-6.0 next week. Should be able to transplant the rest by end of week as well.
***VEGETATION WEEK 2 (Sept 22-28)***
Sept 22
-------------
- Rinsed coco with 1.1 EC / 6.1 pH
- Transplanted last KT and 2x WR
- Some root damage to one WR seedling
- Watered KTs @ 1.1 EC / 6.1 pH
- All seem sensitive to high VPD
All remaining seedlings are into the square pots now. One of the WR plugs kinda fell apart in my hand when peeling off the fabric mesh. It snapped the main tap root off so she may not survive, but we'll see. WRs are 5 days behind the KTs.
Sept 23
-------------
- Watered KT 1-3
IN: 1.1 EC / 6.0 pH @ 21c
OUT: 1.0 EC / 6.1 pH @ 24c
Environment is now more stable so I'm taking off the domes. Room stays between 72-77F / 70-75%. They get a light breeze from an oscillating tower fan on low speed. The first 3 KTs to transplant are working on node 4, while the others are starting node 3.
I've been watering every other day since transplanting but I'll start daily waterings soon. Based on my Runoff values, EC may be raised to 1.2 as well as another drop in pH to 5.9.
Sept 24
- Watered ALL @ 1.2 EC / 6.0 pH
- OUT: 1.1 EC / 5.9-6.2 pH
- Runoffs for KTs all 1.1 EC / 6.2 pH
- Lower pH to 5.9 next watering
Sept 25
- IN: 1.2 EC / 5.9 pH
- OUT: 1.2 EC / 6.3 pH
Strange seeing the root zone pH rising after lowering the feed pH. Maybe that's where they want to be right now.
Sept 27
IN: 1.2 EC / 6.0 pH
OUT:
WR1: 1.1 EC / 5.9 pH
WR2: 1.2 EC / 6.0 pH
TR1: 1.0 EC / 6.1 pH
TR2: 1.1 EC / 6.1 pH
TR3: 0.9 EC / 6.1 pH
TR4: 1.1 EC / 5.9 pH
Going to lower the EC on the younger plants due to higher EC runoff and pH levels lowering. Generally means over fertilizing in my experience.
Sept 28
IN: 1.1 EC / 6.0 pH (KT 1-3)
OUT: 1.1 EC / 6.1-6.2 pH
IN: 0.9 EC / 6.0 pH (KT4 & WRs)
OUT: 1.0 EC / 6.0-6.1 pH
I changed the fixture to T5s for more light. It really boosted the heat and dropped the humidity. VPD spiked to 1.4 kpa. Working on ways to keep the humidity up, or lower the heat a bit.
I'll be buffering more coco this weekend to prepare for transplanting, likely by Monday. Three of the KTs are working on node 6 now, almost ready for topping. Others are about a week behind.
***VEGETATION WEEK 2/3 (Sept 29-Oct 5)***

- Rinsed more hydrated coco with 4L plain water @ 6.3 pH
- Buffer new coco @ 1.5 EC / 6.3 pH (CalMag only)
I only had enough buffered coco to transplant two KTs. Got some more brewing this morning to get the last bigger KT potted up. The rest need considerably more time until they're ready. Looking to top these near the end of the week, once they recover from the transplant stress.
Something strange I noticed between the three larger KTs...KT2 and KT3 both have side branching started from node 2 on, but KT1 has nothing. Looking into what that means, if anything. KT3 also appears to have a bit of crispy top. Light strength isn't exactly high yet either.
Oct 2
- Humidity on the low end (during lights on)
- Rinsed buffered coco with 1.2 EC / 6.2 pH (2L CalMag only)

Week 6 summary:
I decided to cull one plant (WR2) because it looked like she was going to continue struggling. Strange growth (three tips at every node) up the stalk with the secondary branches not really growing. Leaves were bronzing and crispy (maybe too much wind).
Nutrients are at 1.6 EC, but with slightly high runoff values (+ 0.4). pH has stabilized at 5.8. Added silica to the mix to strengthen the branches. I want to get up to 1.8 EC before flowering so the plant can get used to higher doses of nutrients.
VPD has been right where it needs to be (0.8-1.1 KpA) since adding an evaporative humidifier (no mist) to the room during lights on. HUGE difference.
I took an hour off the light schedule this week and will take another hour off next week to get to 16/8. Last week of veg will be at 14/10 when I defoliate and take cuttings. I like to think the gradual decrease isn't as shocking to the plants vs taking 6 hours off in one day. Who knows lol
***VEGETATION WEEK 6/7 (Oct 27-Nov 2)***

Getting the balance between heat and humidity right has been a challenge ever since I started growing...
In the beginning I had a portable AC unit running for the duration of lights on, which worked for the heat, but flattened the humidity. Not to mention expensive .
Then I bought air cooled lamp hoods (HPS/MH) for the next grow and tied in the ducting to the extractor. This worked a bit better, but the room still ran hot and humidity continued being a bitch to keep above 50%. The extractor would run non-stop at reasonably high speeds.
At the start of this grow I decided to change it up again. I had an inline fan with a carbon filter pulling air from the lamp hoods and venting into a room adjacent to the grow. Again, a slight improvement but I was still getting temps up to 84F at 75% intensity. Humidity improved, but by the end of the light cycle it was too low and sent VPD way out of range (1.55). This configuration also made the inline fan and carbon filter incredibly hot.
Today I changed it again. Instead of pulling air from the lamp hoods, I changed the fan direction to blow over the bulbs. I unsealed the end of the lamp and added ducting to go through the grow room and vented out into a different area (a much cooler area of my basement that has no heat vent).
The result was an instant game changer. Temperatures (with lamps at 100% instead of 75%) never went over 79F. Leaf temperature dropped by 6F. Humidity stayed put, allowing me to set new environmental triggers, while simultaneously running the intake fan for the entire lights on period. HUGE for air exchange. VPD (at the end of the light cycle) went from 1.39-1.55 down to .95-1.22 for 12 consecutive hours. The vented heat actually warmed the basement and my furnace never kicked on once. Zero heat loss in the house overnight. Insane.
Super stoked as this should not only increase the quality of my flower, but save me some real cake in heating this winter.
Oct 31
-----------
- Watered ALL @ 1.6 EC / 5.8 pH (AM) (2-2.5L)
- Took 2x clones of each plant (10)
Everything good. Going to give them an extra week of veg to see what they do under the new conditions. Most branches have started the offset nodes so these ladies are almost officially ready to bloom.
I took cuttings off all the plants and got them into another veg room to root. I'll keep the Wild Runtz going no matter what and select (maybe) two phenos of the King's Tart cross.

- Runoff bucket 1.6-1.9 EC / 6.0-6.2 pH
- Heavy defoliation and pruning
Getting wildly different readings from my environmental probes. Nearly a 10% swing in humidity between the hygrometer, dehumidifier & room probe. Gotta sort this out quick now that we're getting into bud development.
There's pretty decent tufts of pistils on all plants. KP1 (the biggest plant in the room) has really thick branches. I'm worried it might be a male/hermie trait. Keeping a close eye on that one.
I semi-flushed all the plants with a mild solution of PK 14/15, CaMg and Silica. About 8L each brought the root EC down from 2.4 to 1.6-1.9. I'm going to lower my feed strength for the week because past notes has my runoff EC skyrocketing to 4+ after watering with anything over 2.0 EC.
FLOWERING WEEK 3 (Nov 24-30)
------------------------------------------------------
TARGETS:
EC: 1.8 (IN)
pH: 6.1-6.2 (IN)
TEMP: 25-27c (DAY) 19-21c (NIGHT)
HUMIDITY: 55-65%

Nov 25
------------
- Watered all @ 1.8 EC / 6.1 pH (AM) (2-3L)
- Runoff bucket 1.9 EC
- Watered all @ 1.8 EC / 6.2 pH (AM) (2-3L)
- Destroyed KP1 (Male/Herm)
- Suspicious growth on KP2 as well (watch close)
I think the stretch has stopped, at least I hope so. Some stretched a bit over 2x and a few maybe 1.5x. I got some stakes into the 5 gallon bags to tie up any drooping branches.
It's already really gassy in the room, pretty strong considering the budlets are tiny.
There was bound to be one...discovered a male flower about to pop on KP1 and destroyed it. I had a feeling it would herm because of the suspiciously thick branching. Way too thick. There's another plant in the room with similar growing traits and I'm keeping a close eye on it. My guess is it's going to herm as well. Plus side is I caught it early and there's more room for the others now. Silver linings.
Nov 26
------------
- Watered all @ 1.8 EC / 6.1 pH (AM) (2-3L)
- Runoff bucket 2.5 EC
- Inspect KP2, male flower found, destroyed
- KP4 male flower found, destroyed

Nov 27
-----------
- Watered all @ 2.0 EC / 6.2 pH (PM) (2.5-3.5L)
- Runoff bucket 2.6 EC
- Tied down branches
...and then there were two. Had to destroy two more plants last night. Not taking any chances with cross pollination. Bit of a bummer that I'm down to one of my crosses but hopefully it turns out. I've got one clone vegging of each strain now after throwing out the ones from hermed plants.
FLOWERING WEEK 5 (Dec 8-14)
---------------------------------
TARGETS:
EC: 2.0-2.2 (IN)
pH: 6.2-6.3 (IN)

Dec 8
----------
- Watered all @ 2.1 EC / 6.2 pH (5:30 AM) (4L)
- Runoffs 2.3-2.4 EC
- Watered all @ 2.1 EC / 6.2 pH (8:30 PM) (3-4L)
- Clipped several large fans off each plant
- Watered all @ 2.1 EC / 6.2 pH (11:30 PM) (2L)
Things are looking good into week 5. Should start to see them really bulk up in the next 14 days. I'm watering 2-3 times a day, and at a slightly lower EC over my last grow. Higher volumes and more events have kept the EC relatively in check. pH is stable at 6.2.
Runoffs are highest at the end of the light period, but are much closer to base if I add a third watering before bed. EC is almost balanced after the watering at lights on (+0.1). Since the plants aren't feeding at night, the higher EC shouldn't do any damage.
The environment is very good. High temps of 26-27c with humidity at 58-60%. Average VPD is 1.24.
Wishing I went a little higher up the plants with my pruning and defoliation before bloom (and after week 3) because there's a lot of hidden (and small) bud sites at the bottoms. I clipped some large fan leaves to open up the airflow through the middles, which I really didn't want to do this late.

Last day of week 5! Couple notes...I've run out of VeloKelp and the grow shop is sold out so I'm subbing in Grotek's Vitamax Pro. It doesn't have kelp in it, but the nutrients ratio is the same (1-1-1).
I discontinued CalMag earlier than usual this time. My tap water is pretty high in minerals, specifically calcium. Remo's nutrient chart says to stop at week 6 anyway. No signs of calcium deficiency (brown spots, red/purple stems) so it should be ok. Too much calcium can lock out phosphorus, which is super important for bud development and we don't want that. I've had runs in coco where I didn't supplement calcium at all and they did great so I might dial back the CalMag going forward.
Environment is still stable, albeit with a slightly higher VPD than I'd like during lights on (1.4-1.5 KpA). After week 6 I'll start lowering the temperature and humidity slightly. For now just trying to stay the course and keeping the coco fkn SOAKING WET. I've only let the pots dry out once, and that was by accident. Only seeing a tiny bit of brown leaf tips, and that's normal with the amount of water I'm dumping into these things.
Still trying to water three times a day, but it's tough. Runoff EC is generally between 2.4-2.9 with a pH of 6.2.
Kingpin has a very strong burnt rubber/gassy aroma. Seems to be leaning more towards the Z Pointer terps than the strong cat piss profile of the King's Tart mother. Trichome production is similar to KT, caked. Wild Runtz has a sweet, fruity, minty fuel smell which is absolutely mouthwatering.
FLOWERING WEEK 6 (Dec 15-21)
------------------------------------------------------
TARGETS:
EC: 2.2-2.4 (IN)
pH: 6.3 (IN)
TEMP: 25c (DAY) 19c (NIGHT)
HUMIDITY: 50-60%
VPD: 1.0-1.5 KpA
- Discontinue Silica
- Reduce CalMag by half
Very crucial week here. Generally after week 6 buds don't gain a lot of mass unless they're 9+ week strains. I really have no idea how long the flowering cycle is on these so I'm treading carefully.
I'd like to be at peak nutrient strength right now but I don't want to cause any lockout from overfeeding. Runoffs we're getting high and pH was dropping below 6.2.
The mix is a bit tricky here because the feed schedule says to stop CaIMag at week 6. That's likely assuming an 8 week flower cycle, but again, I don't know the cycle yet. For now I'm reducing the CalMag supplement by half to satisfy cation exchange in the coco.
I've just removed Silica from the feed schedule after learning you shouldn't use it past week 3 of bloom 😆. That supplement was a massive boost to the solution pH, which is now missing and making if difficult to reach the target of 6.3. I'll have to run out and grab pH UP for the first time ever.
Solution EC target of 2.4 is difficult to achieve without exceeding Remo's recommended element ratio as well. Still out of VeloKelp and I ran out of PK 14/15 so buying a few new bottles is inevitable.
Shit looks good though. The Wild Runtz stash seed is exceeding expectations in a 3 gallon pot. The long colas on strong branching are starting to fill in with white pistils still sticking up.
Kingpin is about as wide as it is tall (40"). The top 10-12" is bulking up really nicely. I'll have to start tying outside branches to each other to avoid any snapping later on but she looks sturdy.
Pulling a few leaves out of the middle to get more light and airflow through her might be good. At the same time, I haven't done a lot of defoliation in bloom (fan leaves help keep humidity up through healthy transpiration) and the environment has been on target so I don't want to fuck with them too much.

I took a trip to the grow shop and they had VeloKelp back in stock (didn't call me) so I grabbed another litre. Also picked up a small bottle of Sensizym and the pH UP. Totally forgot about the root cleaner up to this point. I'll only run this for two weeks before discontinuing.

Dialing back the EC. Doesn't seem sustainable with the amount of solution I'm dumping in to maintain the root zone EC. Getting a ton of runoff and that means waste. I'll drop back to 1.8-2.0 EC tomorrow and see where it's at.

Busy week and just wanted to get in and out of the grow room as quick as possible. Fkn exhausted. Didn't measure any runoffs but I can assume it's over 3.0 EC based on previous waterings. They don't seem to be drinking as much anymore so it might be time to dial back the solution EC.

Not having a great week. Got covid on Sunday and I've been dropping the ball big time. Sleep schedule is fkd. I left the humidifier on with the blue display lights shining for almost an hour after lights off...I left the runoff trays full in the room, forgot to open the heat vent...not the time to start fkn up. Get it together.

- Runoffs: 1.8-2.0 EC
Mini flush to get the root zone EC down. I want to start letting the pots dry out a few times so they'll need the room for the EC to climb between watering events. Swelling is still going and there's still lots of white pistils so I can't let off the gas too much yet. Should probably add the odd dose of calmag here and there as well.

This week I just worked on slowly bringing down the EC, temps and humidity. Lots of cloudy trichomes and some amber so they're nearly ready to harvest.
Been getting some curled leaf tips and crispy edges...might be the drop in humidity or wind burn. VPD has been higher than I'd like at this stage as well (1.5-1.6). I've clipped some of the larger/damaged fan leaves to improve air flow through the canopy.
Kingpin is giving off a strong eucalyptus aroma, similar to Vick's Vap-o-Rub. Wild Runtz has a fruity/gassy/minty smell. Both have pretty large buds but it's obvious WR has more density. I'll need to put a beer can or something next to them for scale as the pictures don't do any justice to the size.
Next week I'll continue watering like normal with plain pH'd water. I'll finish them off with large doses of distilled water to reduce the ppm even further. Would like to see a clear runoff below 100 ppm if possible before chopping.
Harvested on Day 64. Chopped individual branches and hang dried 7 days. Fan leaves removed day one, large sugar leaves day 3. Clipped the buds off the branches and into 14L totes on day 7. Final trim was day 10 from harvest.

Smoke report doesn't work, obviously. Last diary here. Been a great experience sharing with you all! Keep on growing!!
