Planted 5 Afghaan 90 Broad Leaf Variant seeds directly into the expanded clay a few inches deep. Here is the description. of the seeds from The Real Seed Company:
"Genetics: Afghan (Dutch – American Heirloom)
Type: Pure Indica
Height: 0.75 – 1.2 metres
Indoors: c. 56 – 70 days
Outdoors: October
Classification: C. sativa subsp. indica var. afghanica
Afghaan 90 is a pure Afghan Indica heirloom direct from 1989 / 1990 Amsterdam seed stock.
This sub-line has been selected to breed true for broad-leafleted semidwarf traits. Plants are compact, with very short internodes. This is a pristine, classic Indica.
A curious trait of semidwarf variants of Afghaan 90 is that, after seedling stage, leaves on one side of the plant are much larger than on the other.
The background story of this strain is that seeds labelled ‘Afghaan’ were acquired in Amsterdam in 1990 and stored long-term. Now, 30 years on, this old-school Indica is alive and kicking, resurrected straight from the original seeds.
These are high-yielding plants with big colas that dry to nice, solid nugs. Often purple colours are shown.
Buds are intensely resinous. Aromas in flower range from candy-sweet floral to diesel and hash. Smoke is earthy and spicy. The Afghaan 90 BLD line has a special lime-scented variant.
This heirloom Afghan has a high that’s positive and warm, with pleasant body effects and a sense of well-being. Notably, there is none of the paranoia or dysphoria associated with some pure Indica heirlooms. “It really is the best pure Indica in the world,” says one customer."
These are not feminised seeds which is why I have planted 5, I only intend to fully grow up to 4 plants. If my some miracle all 5 are female I will remove the smallest one.
My last grow was an attempt to grow Kerala, a pure South Indian sativa landrace. It was incredibly challenging and the results weren't so I have decided to go for something easier and grow a classic heirloom Indica.
Seeds were planted directly into the expanded clay pebbles
Everything going well so far, raised the light intensity to 40% which has increased the temp and decreased humidity but we are still in a happy range. The plants are a bit taller than i would like which will make training a bit tricker. Going to top next week.
Changed the reservoir last night. Forgot to check the water temperature and cold shocked the roots. Water temp went from around 27c to 16c!!. The leaves have crisped up on all but 1 plant. They should recover in a few days though. I've now topped all the plants leaving the 1st 2 nodes which i'm starting to train horizontally using soft ties on the bamboo frame.
Was away for Christmas for a week. They fully recovered from the cold shock and have grown significantly. I removed the interior fan leaves and any downward facing shoots and moved the soft ties to pull down the dominant branches. I tied down plant 3 which was lagging behind the others a bit.
I plan to flip to flower in about 5 days then will need to remove the males and figure out how to optimise the remaining space.
Flipped to flower yesterday. All plants looking good. Adjusted the soft ties to keep the shoots at even height and to get the plant growing outwards as much as possible. Changed the reservoir solution with bloom nutrients. Ec is 1.7, pH at 6.0.
This is a crucial moment to see which plants are male and which are female. The number of females greatly determines what is to be done next.
If all 5 are female i will likely remove plant 3 as its the smallest and in the middle. If only 1 is female i will likely reveg for a week.
My plan is to use topping and LST with the ties to direct the female plants into the space left by the removed males. I will also likely move the plants around.
Sexed the plants. Ended up with 4/5 females which is a great result!
Plant 5 was the only male and has been removed. Plant 3 wqs moved to position 5.
Did more defoliation removing lower shoots and internal fan leaves.
Did more training with soft ties to keep the plant growing horizontally and keeping all shoots equidistant from the light.
Laid out a scrog net for further training but it might not be necessary. This is a very short bushy pure afghan plant so i'm not anticipating much stretch. Ive been removing a lot of lower shoots because the internidal space is very short and the leaves are very broad and thick an simply won't get enough light.
It's nice to be confidently on top of a grow after my landrace sativa nightmare last grow!
3rd week of flower, plant 2 appeared to herm a lil, popping a few bollocks which i have removed.
There appear to be 3 distinct phenotypes. Plant 1 streches a little and trains very nicely, a large but still short and bushy plant, probably my favourite growing-wise. I'll call this Phenotype A.
Plants 2 and 3 are very short and stocky, almost too much so to be trained. Theu have barely stretched and remained very stocky. I'll call this Phenotype B. Plant 4 is stretching out a lot more than the others. I'm calling it Phenoype C.
We'll see how they develop.
Ran out of bloom nutrients, will add more in a few days.
Humidity has drastically increased so I might bring in the dehumidifier soon.
Week 4 of flower
Plants 1 thru 3 have stayed squat and broad, plant 4 has stretched a fair bit, expressing some kush genetics.
Plant 1 has the most mature flower followed closely by plant 2, then plant 4 then plant 3.
Height disparity is a bit annoying for consistent lamp distance but other than that things are going well.
Moved in the dehumidifier because the humidity was in the 70-80s, the plant has started budding and afghans haye humidity.
Plants 1 and 2 seem to have the same phenotypic expression, dwarf, broad leaflet, fast flowering, lime-scented. From the realseedcompany.com: "The Afghaan 90 BLD line has a special lime-scented variant." I think these are this phenotype
Plant 3 is slow and uglt, doesn't like being trained and generally a mess. Its doing its thing though and who knows it could be the best smoke.
Plant 4 is clearly not expressing the BLD trait and has taken off for the stars.
The phenotypic disparity is a bit frustrating because the lamp distance from the dwarf plant is much higher than i'd like but at the same time i will have 3 distinct phenotypes to smoke.
Plant 1 and 2 look like they will finish a food few weeks before the others so i'll probably need to do an intermittant flush in a few weeks.
Plant 4 got so tall i had to remove some tops. Last thing i was expecting.
Plants 1 and 2 getting heftier. Plant 3 lagging a bit, plant 4 set to be a huge yielder.
Flushing for 3 days then gonna harvest plant 1 and add nutrients for the others
Plant 4 has kinda stolen the show absolute monster plant. Had to remove a few more tops but she should be a heavy yielder.
Plants 2 and 3 probably need an extra week or 2 on plant 1 and plant 4 probably another week on that.
So plant 4 is pretty much the main event, absolute monster of a plant.
Plant 1 is nearly ready, water is pH'd but currently no nutrients, flushing for 4 days, gonna harvest plant 1 on Sunday.
Plant 2 and 3 need an extra week or 2, they are struggling next to plant 4 which is stealing the show and the space.
Harvested plant 1, got around 50g, cobbed about half of it, will report smoke in final harvest report.
Plant 2 coming down soon in a week or so.
Plant 3 still sucks.
Plant 4 is ridiculous, utter monster plant 4 is the main
