25 Mimosa Shot

Northern_Ent April 26 Day 1: and we’re off…seedling is off to a good start. one more light frost tomorrow night and then they’ll all be outside. Was 22 C today but will be -1 C overnight tomorrow. May 1 Day 6: the seedlings were stretching under my starter light and i want her to out grow the overly wet soil block she was started in. The weather is hot in a couple days so i wanted them to get hardened off before it hits 28 C this weekend. Super early to be outdoors here but the forecast is good for cannabis. Rock on. Hybrid Wagon is Mimosa Shot and Sunday Punch EV. Sativa Wagon is Lemon Cream Kush and hopefully Durban Poison.

Northern_Ent May 3 Day 8: it was hot these last two days at about 26 C but young seedlings seem okay. it was a bit cold these other night when i left them outside instead of in the garage. it’s enclosed but not heated and is warm enough to help them get throught the night. And warmed water at about 26 C. Not over watering bit enough to warm the roots a bit in the morning.

Northern_Ent May 10: looking good. Overnight in garage and watering in early morning with warmed water. May 11: the wagon helps chase sunlight around the yard, but it also helps to find shade at midday when the seedlings are feeling a bit overwhelmed. May 12: rained this afternoon and high of only 15 C. in garage overnight. May 15: looking good. 👍

Northern_Ent May 17 Day 22: looking good. it’s been cooler for the last week than it was in early spring but we’re in good shape for this early in the season. Another five full weeks until the summer solstice so still lots of time for good vegetative growth. May 20: cool and rainy last three days. May 22: still quite cool and rainy but should warm up in a few days.

Northern_Ent May 24 Day 29: last week was quite cool so slow growth. Once the fifth node forms I’ll do the first topping for the manifold. Maybe by tomorrow. Forecast is perfect warm cannabis weather so there should be some nice growth this week. May 25: topped this morning as first step in manifolding. This will ultimately be a 16 cola plant. That is definitely my preferred manifoldimg target for outdoor plants - 32 is too many (too slow) and 8 isn't enough. May 29: seems good. She’s smaller than the Sunday Punch EV that was started at the same time.

Northern_Ent May 31: she’s doing fine. This Mimosa Shot is smaller than the Sunday Punch EV that was started at the same time, but still decently sized for the end of May. Still lots of vegetative growth to go. Topped her a while ago but she’s been slow to recover and I’ll be waiting a few more days before the next round of topping to build the manifold. June 1: added loose Scrog net to expose growth tips to light and keep fan leaves gently out of the way. Tried this loose Scrog approach last year and it worked great.

Northern_Ent June 7: i think Mimosa Shot likes it to be a bit warmer but she’s doing alright. Long daylight hours now and warm enough so she should make up for a slow-ish start. June 9: loose scrog net is doing the job of keeping the growth tips exposed to light. Very effective. Re-arrange it a bit as needed as the plant grows. No need to even tie it off as the weight of the string is enough. Video is a tip about keeping leaves moist in dry air. Plants are much happier when their leaves also get some moisture to make up for the low humidity. June 12: looks good.

Northern_Ent June 15: she’s doing fine. Applied a second layer of loose Scrog net. Works great. June 15: topped a second time. Internodal distance is a bit small for the manifolding I’m trying to do. Normally i would have topped it a few days ago but was waiting for it to grow out further. Maybe it wont be big enough to do 16+ colas and I’ll have to settle for 8 big ones instead. We’ll see. Did a foliar spray of Extreme Blend early in morning (every 5-7 days seems about right). Looks nice and dark green right now to capture peak sunlight around the solstice. June 18: rain day.

Northern_Ent June 21: start of summer and a new week for Mimosa Punch. Morning foliar spray with Extreme Blend, potassium silicate, and a few drops of Dr Bronners Peppermint Soap as a wetting agent. The peppermint smell also repels pests. The silicate will help make the stems tougher and better able to withstand any heat waves. Starting another lazy compost tea this afternoon. This will be the third one so far this season. Just 26 C-ish water in a 5 gallon pail with molasses, compost, coco coir and a weak dose of Monster Maxx. Leave overnight and give it a stir a few times. More than enough for the cannabis and I use the rest on the tomatoes and rest of the garden. June 23: adjusted net. Removed some fan leaves that were shading growth tips. To help keep the wagon plants kind of matched for height, i won’t top again to get 16 colas—just go with 8 on this one. June 25: foliar spray with Epsom salts to provide Mg and S. New growth is a bit too yellow. June 26: nice and green this morning so Epsom sallts did the trick.

Northern_Ent June 28: Mimosa Shot is doing fine. will leave this as an 8 cola plant. July 1: growing fine and it’s liking the warmer weather. July 2: added another scrog net layer to keep the 8 colas spaced out for sunlight. She has gotten taller and has gained a bit on the Sunday Punch EV which is also in the hybrid wagon. I think this MS just prefers overnight temperatures to be a bit warmer.

Northern_Ent July 5: Mimosa Shot is doing fine. Adjusted Scrog net. July 8: added Power Bloom and barley in a 1:1 mix as a top dressing. July 10: looking good and keeping up with the Sunday Punch EV. Has grown 5 inches in 5 days. July 11: still growing at an inch per day.

Northern_Ent July 12: looking good. Starting force flowering which is 12 h of darkness at same time each night for 2-3 weeks to initiate flowering. Doing ten hours of darkness (9:30 pm to 7:30 am) plus a ‘bonus’ two hours by using the far red light for a few seconds before dark which causes the plant to go into dark mode about two hours faster. So, it’s like having a 26 h day with 12 h of dark. This is a great trick if you have daily access to your plants. July 15: doing fine. July 18: Mimosa Shot has finally caught up in height to the other plant in the wagon (Sunday Punch EV). Added defoliation as a technique this week, but really that happens every week.

Northern_Ent July 19: second week of force flowering for Mimosa Shot. She’s doing fine and height wise has mostly caught up to the other plant in the wagon. Defoliated the understory to remove small buds and most fan leaves. Left some big fan leaves down below but took most out to improve airflow. July 21: doing fine. July 22: Foliar spray with Epsom salts and potassium silicate in the morning. The magnesium in the Epsom salts seems to help with the yellowish new growth. July 23: added another loose Scrog net layer this morning. Tying the net to water bottles to open up canopy to sunlight. July 25: watered yesterday with some leftover water from steaming beets for dinner. That water likely had lots of N because beets are high in nitrate and the plants look really green today.

Northern_Ent July 26: Mimosa Shot has mostly caught up to the other plant in the wagon and they are now the same height. Did a fourth lazy compost tea. See video explaining how I make it using things like blackstrap molasses and Epsom salts both of which are cheap and easy to find at the grocery store. July 29: nice and sunny today. Plants look great. July 31: defoliated inner fan leaves and small lower buds. This ‘lollipopping’ saves the plant from wasting effort on small buds that aren’t going to amount to anything. Also improves air flow and maximizes sunlight on the remaining buds. Added a round of Gaia Green seaweed extract when watering (label says once every two weeks). Aug 1: Plant is showing red petioles and there is a blue-ish tint to the leaves both of which are signs of P deficiency. Added another round of 50/50 malted barley and Power Bloom as top dressing.

Northern_Ent Aug 2: Mimosa Shot is hitting her stride now. She didn’t like the cooler temperatures as much as Sunday Punch EV, for example, but she’s loving this hot start to August. Aug 3: done with force flowering and will now just leave her in the yard. So, back up to 15.5 h of daylight here now. Still using far red light at dusk. Aug 6: Mimosa Shot has stretched again, likely mostly due to 3 days of hot weather.

Northern_Ent Aug 9: Mimosa Shot is doing fine. She was slower starting than her wagon partner Sunday Punch EV, but she is liking the warmer weather. Got UV led lights from AC Infinity going today. These are designed for indoor so I can only put them out on nice weather days. Did this last year and seems to work. The UV lights make Edmonton in the fall feel more like California in the summer, or at least that’s the idea. UV is critical for trichome production so it’s a good way to boost THC percentage. Aug 14: rainy the last few days. Mimosa Shot likes to be a bit warmer. It was slower getting going in the spring, and now it seems to be suffering from a P deficiency. Reddish petioles, and a blueish tint to the leaves. She has received Power Bloom and barley just like the other plants, but still seemed to be lacking something. Ed Rosenthal’s Grower’s Handbook says P deficiency can be due to cold weather. Decided to try and dissolve 0.5 tsp of Power Bloom in 1 L of warm water to use as a high P foliar spray. As always, used a bit of Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap as a surfactant, and apple cider vinegar to adjust pH. Power Bloom mostly dissolved but with some undissolved. Unfortunately I don’t have a working TDS or EC meter. Not sure how strong it was so just sprayed a bit on the fan leaves.

Northern_Ent Aug 16: Mimosa Shot is progressing but it has been cool and rainy lately. There are indications of P deficiency because of the cool weather. The top dressing of malted barley and Power Bloom will do its thing so I’m not worried about it. Hoping for more direct sunlight though. Aug 18: video shows use of far red light at dusk. To keep on a natural schedule, I use Civil Twilight as listed on timeanddate.com for my location. At this time of year it is getting earlier by 2-3 minutes every night. The far red 730 nm light puts the plant into dark mode two hours faster and is like getting a 26 h day. It works and is a good trick if you have daily access to your plants.

Northern_Ent Aug 23: Mimosa Shot is doing fine. More sativa like than I expected bit she is starting to fill in and smells nice. She only has 8 colas because she didnt like the cool spring, but it’s hot here for at least the next 10 days so she will finish strong. Aug 26: just over 30 C today and upping water volume. Doing three waterings of about 3 L each, and spraying down grow bags when they’re in direct sun for too long. Aug 27: hot again reaching 32 C today.

Northern_Ent Aug 30: still hot. Sep 2: heat wave is now past and we’re now into a couple days of smoke. Cut back water volume from 9 L/day when it was hot to 5-6 L lately. Sep 5: don’t take flash pics of photoperiod plants unless you follow it up with a red light.

Northern_Ent Sep 6: the bud type seems a bit disappointing. Likely just this particular phenotype but she is not really forming normal looking buds. Whatever, the smell is very nice and there will be enough mass and potency for extracts. Sep 7: added a final round of malted barley and Power Bloom. Sep 12: don’t take flash pics of your plants unless you follow up with a far red light to put them into dark mode. Otherwise you run a higher risk of hermies.
