GoodWeedBerlin My standard germination process: 8-10 hours in a glass of water until the seeds sink, then into the damp kitchen towel. After 48 hours, both have germinated, one had a slight head start. I'm looking forward to the first Humboldt Seed Company strain in my tent.

GoodWeedBerlin The two have now moved into the 40x40 tent and will be illuminated with the Caluma 75W from here on. Starting with 50% light output, which I will gradually dim up to 66% during the (probably quite short) growth phase. 100% will only be given for the flowering switch. The simplified logic behind this: If the duration of the light phase decreases by 33% and I can simultaneously provide 33% more light output, the number of light particles available daily remains the same. Repotting (into two 8-liter pots) and the move have been well tolerated by the two. Growth actually continued the very next day. What I forgot to mention in my two previous grows: When repotting, I add a pinch of Dynomyco Mycorrhizal to the planting hole and to the root. I find the logic behind it convincing, but I lack a one-to-one comparison to verify the effect. I'm completely satisfied with the two previous grows, so "never change a winning system." This also includes the Atami VGN line as fertilizer. Both plants show a small leaf mutation at the 2nd node, like I've seen in some other Hella Jelly grows. It's like a second leaf tip on the side.

GoodWeedBerlin It's been a long time since I've had such a massive mechanical error during a grow. But I overdid it with the first LST and topped one of the Hella Jelly plants. I didn't pay attention to where the stem was bending after I massaged it, and with a loud "crack," the top part was completely gone. Since I wanted to start a Hella Jelly outside anyway at the beginning of June, I made a virtue out of necessity and took the topped shoot as a clone (Clonex, rock wool cube, and a homemade recycling mini-greenhouse). In the tent, there will now be a week longer of growth than planned, but I can live with that. With the SCROG net, I should still be able to achieve a somewhat homogeneous height and distribution despite the two different structures.

GoodWeedBerlin The involuntarily topped plant has slowly recovered, and with enough leaf mass, there's also a little growth spurt. It definitely won't catch up to the other one, but together they'll fill the tent if I give them another week of growth. Everything is fine with the LST plant, not much vertical growth, but plenty of shoots. Some have 3 shoots per node. The cutting is alive; you can already see a first white root tip, and the leaves/leaf remnants still look vital and healthy.

The topped one has lost at least a week due to the involuntary (and too deep) topping, but is catching up well. The area is about 80% green, so it's time to switch to 12/12 starting tonight and ramp up the light to 100%.

GoodWeedBerlin For a week now, the ladies have only been getting 12 hours of light, and in the last few days, you can see how the branches are stretching out from the very compact framework. As a precaution, there was a shower with a neem oil mixture for 2 days before bedtime. As organic as neem oil is and knowing that it completely disappears after 3 weeks: once the flowers are there, I would like to avoid any spraying. So, a preventive shower. The cutting has developed roots and is already processing nutrients again, but from now on it will be by the window so it doesn't go into flowering right away. So far, a nice genetic variety, vigorous, many shoots, fine with training - keep it up, Hella.

GoodWeedBerlin After almost 2 weeks, the transition phase has now moved into the visible flowering phase. There are already more hairs growing than on my head. So far, I actually assumed that the two phenos were very homogeneous (so basically the same pheno) and that only the involuntary topping of one caused the growth patterns to differ a bit. However, the topped plant seems to be growing more like an Indica in terms of flowering, while the lady with the LST has a more sativa-like flower structure.

GoodWeedBerlin I was away for 5 days, and when I came back, a new scent awaited me. Sweet, delicious, indescribable, and quite different from the dessert strains I've encountered so far. I felt something similar last time with a Biscotti. The more indica-leaning pheno is developing a somewhat unusual growth pattern on the flowers of the two main branches. I'm curious to see how this progresses during the flowering stage. The Atami VGN nutrients continue to perform excellently. With the Hella Jelly, I'm using the medium mix from Atami's feeding schedule. No deficiencies and just slightly burnt leaf tips - I think it's working out pretty well. The clone I made from the accidentally topped plant is now enjoying fresh air and is in great health. When that happened, I decided to only be a little annoyed with myself if the clone works out. Now I can finally look myself in the eyes again. 😉

GoodWeedBerlin There's nothing bad to report about the genetics or the nutrients. Everything continues to do what it should, even if the temperature sometimes exceeds 30 degrees. I would confirm that the Hella Jelly likes high temperatures (I just hope that in the last flowering phase, the high temperatures don't "steam" the terpenes out of the plants. That would be a significant loss - the smell changes slightly but remains primarily sweet and delicious. These are definitely 2 different phenos. The more indica-dominant one really looks like it could have a very quick bloom, possibly finishing in 7 weeks. For the sativa-dominant pheno, I would guess a 2-week longer flowering time.

GoodWeedBerlin The buds are continuing to fill out, and both plants look absolutely healthy. The smell of sweets is now noticeable even outside the tent; however, I often keep the tent open to avoid heat buildup. I've increased the feeding frequency a bit over the last two weeks, but I haven't raised the average nutrient mix from the Atami schedule. Looks like the ladies are fine with that. I expect to see the indica-heavy pheno entering the ripening phase in the next few days, and the corresponding Aami VGN mix will be available from then on.

GoodWeedBerlin For the indica-dominant pheno, we're in the last 1-2 weeks. The two main colas have a clear mutation; whether that's helpful or disruptive, I'll probably only know after trimming. The more sativa-dominant pheno still has hardly any brown hairs; I maintain the assessment that it needs 2 weeks longer, but will yield more. The smell has changed a bit and has become more subtle. It's a bit like walking from the candy aisle to the fruit aisle; grape is probably the closest to the current smell.

GoodWeedBerlin The indica-dominant pheno is screaming to be harvested, tomorrow or the day after is the time. I've already harvested a side branch to create some airflow in the tent. The 7 weeks of flowering time for the indica pheno comes at a price. The buds are covered in resin, but relatively small. Visually, the sativa pheno is definitely more impressive. It clearly shows that it has nothing to do with the 7-week number. It grows beautiful, big buds and isn't heading towards the harvest window at all. A mix of the two phenos would be nice.

Pheno#1 (Harvest Flower Day 50) The Indica pheno was due today. I didn't grow the Hella Jellys to harvest a couch-locker, and 15% trichomes are at least already amber-colored. For the phenotype, it really aligns with the stated flowering time of 45 days, even though I just harvested on flower day 50 (the speed surprised me a bit - I started watering without additives a few days too late). The yield visually turned out to be a bit more than estimated on the plant yesterday, but the pheno is still not a high-yielder. The smell is (now that it can be smelled alone) back in the candy department, but it has left the door open to the fruit department, and somewhere a bit of forest smell is coming in. Smoke Update: It was a summer grow, and I have hardly any cooling options, so the big terpene festival was more during the run than after the harvest. What remains is a delicious, sweet smell and taste that reminds me more of various blueberry cultivars than anything else. Very potent, no couch lock but also nothing to operate heavy machinery afterward. Pheno#2 (Harvest Flower Day 65) The Sativa pheno has made good use of the last two weeks alone in the tent and has built beautiful, large, ripe buds. The smell of the fresh plant is not quite as blueberry as with the Indica pheno. Here, the candy department is more dominant so far, but a hint of blueberry is mixing in here too.

GoodWeedBerlin The indica-dominant pheno has been harvested, the sativa-dominant pheno now has plenty of space and light and can definitely continue to grow for another 2 weeks or longer. I didn't expect such different phenos. I know about HSC's efforts to breed homogeneous cultivars, and in the Hella Jelly version, there's also a backcross for stabilization. For me, that's not a downside in this case. It's nice to be able to give the second plant a few more weeks in the whole tent while plant one is already drying and maturing. I have a cutting from the first pheno outside, so I'm glad I caught the fast-flowering one.

GoodWeedBerlin I took the Indica pheno out of drying today and packed it into Grove Bags to cure. With 38.5g dry weight, it's still not a high-yielder (the Gary Payton that grew in this setup had 60g), but it's more than I feared. The Sativa pheno gave me a little scare last week; a branch had some bud rot sneaking in. Luckily, I caught it early (2 leaf tips were dry in an otherwise healthy bud). I harvested that branch completely and generously cut out the small area of bud rot. Other than that, it looks healthy and is now entering its final phase of life. Up until today, it had the Atami VGN curing mix, but from now on, just water. It shouldn't need much longer than a week. The cutting from Pheno#1 is struggling a bit with the rainy summer and a snail infestation, but it's managing, otherwise it's doing fine and should safely deliver the missing grams from its mother by the end of September.

GoodWeedBerlin With Pheno#2, no additional flower shimmer has appeared. The buds are nicely matured, both in terms of mass and trichomes. She's enjoying life and still shooting out some new hairs, but the trichome color speaks a clear language: harvest will be in two days. Yesterday, I let her go thirsty for a day, and today she only got 0.5 liters of water. The extra space (and time) has been well utilized by the Pheno. The outdoor plant that came from the Pheno#1 mishap is already giving me an idea that this is actually an outdoor cultivar.

GoodWeedBerlin Since I couldn't find a better way to include the 2nd harvest in the diary (might be related to the fact that I have a photo from the harvest running for Photo of the Month July), I'm just using a regular weekly update again. After 65 days of flowering, the more sativa-dominant pheno was ready as well. It made good use of the last two weeks alone in the tent and built beautiful, large, ripe buds. The smell of the fresh plant isn't quite as blueberry-like as in Pheno#1. There's more of a candy department vibe here, and the hint of blueberry is by no means as dominant. In terms of weight, it should clearly surpass Pheno#1, which means my minimum goal (for every artificial light grow) of 1g/Watt is definitely achieved, even though the Hella Jellys aren't true high-yielders indoors. I've packed the harvest for drying in DryFerm Bags for the first time, and I'm curious about the result. Update Smoke Report: Not only the taste and smell but also the type of high have improved (even) after a proper curing time. The dominant blueberry right after the harvest has developed into a much more complex note. A delicious mix of fruit (blueberry, grape, and a kind of "mint fruit" that brings a fresh vibe) and candy (sweet, but not a chemical sweetness). The potency is beyond question. The full hit takes a few minutes, lasts a good while, and brings good vibes. The legs stay fresh, the head is not clear but active without the negative spiral that other sativas (like Amnesia Haze) sometimes create for me. Definitely not my last Hella Jelly grow. Great job HSC.

GoodWeedBerlin Since the clone has now completed its outdoor life cycle, here's a little update: The Hella Jelly was ready for harvest on October 15th. The fast flowering from the tent showed similar results outside. There was only a small bud at the very bottom with bud rot. Both the timing of the harvest and the low bud rot are positive records in this outdoor environment. My earliest harvest before was on October 17th, and that one wasn't fully mature. In recent years, I had 10-20% bud rot damage, this time under 1%. The harvest from the tent is now completely mature. The taste and effect have become even more pleasant. While the first (fast pheno) has retained and refined its smell, pheno 2 has added a very clear new note: When I open the jar, the scent of strawberry jam hits me. Definitely a genetics I'll grow again. In the tent to find the fast pheno for outdoors and then outdoor like this year.

I see you had a couple of polyploid cola's. I wonder if this is a common trait among Humboldt cultivars?

@@NuggetNick, I am not sure if they would have developed polyploid colas, if I wouldn't have topped her (accidentally) after the second node. I rooted the cutted top and planted it outside. This clone doesn't show any polyploid grow patterns so far (but a great outdoor growth and behaviour). As the Humboldt cultivars have experienced more outdoor in their genes, I guess that it might be one of their outdoor survival mechanisms to shoot more biomass from a single node. But I am not to deep into genes and stuff - just guessing.

Greetings from Augsburg. I'm going to put her in the tent this winter. It's nice that I can follow her live. They look good, I'm curious how long they'll take; I'm 50+, back in the day (1996) everyone took 65+, so the fact that one takes almost 55 is already cool, but a Sativa with 45?? 55 would be killer! 45 is a statement. Wishing you a good harvest, I'll stick around and check it out, you're doing quite well ;) - I also use Atami, they're good. Cheers Rob P.S. How come you think that the trimmed ones yield less? They actually yield more since they eventually have more leaf mass, so they push faster. I top Autoflowers twice... I always have to throw away tons, like 50g and such ;))))

@onkelodi, In my experience with photoperiod plants, the leaf canopy of a topped plant reaches about the same level as a properly LST-trained plant after 6 weeks of vegetation (and can even surpass it from then on). I actually want a maximum of 4 weeks of vegetation phase for 2 plants in a 40*40cm space. In the small tent, I sometimes top my autoflowers to achieve uniform buds, but in a setup with more space, light, and soil, I'm quite sure that with proper LST you'll harvest even more than with topping (2 side branches and the reduced main cola). LST has the same effect as topping, except that the shock of being topped is absent and the main stem continues to grow (although not quite as dominant as completely untrained).

@GoodWeedBerlin, Ahhh 40 x 40, sorry I didn't see that, yeah then 4 weeks is already good. I didn't want to lecture you anyway, with how your girls look you don't need any lectures, just a bit of LEGAL small talk, haha didn't think that would still happen, especially here in Bavaria. I can tell you that topping brings more yield than LST if there's space, since I always rip off all the small branches and only leave the head buds/main stems. The whole main cola thing was already old news 35 years ago. Better to have 20 main buds, but you have to radically prune the plant during veg so they're all the same height and remove all the small branches and buds during flowering. If a couple of head buds grow too fast, I just break them, they'll be back in 10 days, it's just weed. Outdoors, topped plants also yield more if they're tied down, supported, and in a sunny spot; I had my Durban at the fishing lake back in 1992, haha. If you leave all the branches on to let them grow tall, the yield is worse. LST and topping is my thing, since they don't have any leaves, just stems^^ ..but they come back quickly because they need to grow, then everything goes into the stems, same when it flowers. A buddy almost cried when I completely stripped his too big Weddingcheesecake, ALL the leaves gone, all the small branches, his wife came out into the garden, I think she cried :) now she has 32 head buds and fills the tent. But we don't need to talk about you, you're growing in a baby tent ;) they look really good I have to say, and topping is already a risk there. I'm really curious how fast they are, if they'll be ready in 50-55 days. I just started the Gastopia cut, the Strawberry Rock Pop, and Weddingcheesecake Fast.. Enough of autoflowers, now back to feminized, old school^^, even though the last autos were pretty cool. You could mention which flowering day it is next time, not just the week.
