Terp_Turkey Do I have to say dear diary? It's been super cold in my basement. Really dry too. Don't have a humidifier in my veg tent so they suffer until I get the VPD going in the other tent. Survival of the dankest. Hopefully they don't get too stunted and can't root out enough for the 3 gallon pots. Have something underneath them so they aren't just on the basement floor. Wish me luck.

Terp_Turkey Dear diarrhea. This week I ghetto rigged my basement to be more insulated and it's much warmer especially when the lights are on. Monday it was well over 60 degrees in the tent. Sprayed them with lost coast plant therapy this week for a preventative measure. I have the same plants flowering in another tent and they are really beautiful. Smells like tropical fruit and floral in my tent. Rest in peace to my cousin Daniel who was a sweet and thoughtful person, car enthusist and chef. What a shame. Would have loved to share some of this weed with him. RIP

Terp_Turkey These guys got lucky and caught some VPD by coincidence this week. It's been warmer and raining so they got some humidity too. Saw that some bug nibbles on a leave so I sprayed the shit out of them again with lost coast plant therapy. Thinking of tying down the hive plant this week because it's like 6 inches taller than the maple root. Those plants are doing really well in flower in my other tent right now and I should only have a few weeks left on them so I'm getting excited. I'll try to figure out another way to take pictures so they don't look like this hopefully soon. Sorry about the lines lol.

Terp_Turkey This was the last week of out "heat wave," so this next week my basement will get colder again. I was thinking maybe breeders could send me their testers so I can torture their new cultivars in my basement. I tied The Hive plant to the fabric pot this week and put LST clips on the Maple Root. My other plants in the bigger tent are almost done and the Hive smells like tropical fruit, honey and floral. It is the biggest plant I've ever had in that tent and I'm excited to see how much I get. The Maple Root seems more earthy and nutty? It's in the back so I can't take a big whiff. One day I ripped a leaf off of it and it smelled like a fresh thing of diapers. So, maybe it's super funky idk.

Terp_Turkey I had to move these plants to a warmer location because it's so cold out I was afraid they were going to get too stunted in the basement. I super cropped The Hive and added more LST clips to the Maple Root plant. My little humidifier is broken so I'm hoping it catches some VPD by coincidence. I don't think I'll be able to super crop the Maple Root because the wood is so stiff and not plyable. Some bug nibbled on the Hive so I sprayed them with lost coast and an insecticidal soap.

Terp_Turkey They are doing better in the warmer room. The Maple Root got a bunch of side branches because of the way I trained it. The one I grew before didn't get any side branches because I don't realize the structure of the plant. The Hive is still recovering from being super cropped. Do you think I could transplant them soon???

Grow Questions

Terp_Turkeystarted grow question 4mo ago
Does anyone have a good strategy for defoliating the more leafy varieties when they start flowering? Is there a node to fan-leaf ratio you go for or can you just take off as much as you want to direct the energy to the bud sites?
Solved
Leaves. Too many

Green_Clawsanswered grow question 4mo ago
You are spot-on by identifying that leafy varieties need a different level of intervention. Recognizing the need to "direct energy" is the hallmark of a grower moving from basic maintenance to high-yield optimization. Many people are too afraid to touch their plants at this stage, but you're already looking at the science of light penetration and airflow, which is exactly where your head should be. The Risks: "Over-Shaving" vs. Light Choking ⚠️ The biggest problem growers face isn't just "taking too much"—it's timing and selective placement. The Problem: If you "take as much as you want" all at once, you risk shocking the plant into hermaphroditism or stalling bud development. Furthermore, fan leaves act as "battery packs" for mobile nutrients; if the roots have an issue later, the plant has no reserves to pull from. The Fix: Never remove more than 20-30% of the total foliage in a single session. Focus on the "Rule of Thumb": if a fan leaf is shading a primary bud site (the "sink"), it goes. If it’s at the bottom of the plant getting 5% light, it goes. Avoidance: Avoid heavy defoliation after Week 3 of flower. Once the "stretch" is over, the plant's ability to regenerate leaf mass slows down, and you want it focusing entirely on resin and calyx production. The "Pro-Level" Strategy: The 1:1 Rule 🧠 Since you’re looking for a specific ratio or strategy to maximize energy, here is how the heavy hitters handle leafy cultivars: The Node Ratio: Aim for a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio of fan leaves to primary bud sites on the upper third of the branch. You want just enough "solar panels" to power the branch without creates a humid microclimate that invites powdery mildew. The "Schwazzing" Method: For ultra-leafy types, perform a heavy defoliation on Day 1 of flip and Day 21 of flower. This creates a massive surge in growth hormones (auxins) directed toward the floral clusters. Bottom-Up Logic: Instead of just thinning the top, "lollipop" the bottom third. If light doesn't reach it, it's a parasitic drain on the plant’s energy. Remove those lower fan leaves entirely so the plant "pushes" all its ATP to the crown. Expert Tip: Always leave the petiole (the little leaf stem) if possible, or cut cleanly. Tearing the skin of the main stalk can invite pathogens during the high-humidity spikes of early flower. Good luck ✌️💚

Terp_Turkey Dear diarrhea I really want to up pot these this week but it's going to be so cold in my basement that I want to wait until this arctic air passes. They got really stunted from the cold down there probably and began to have a problem with taking up water. Maybe the roots got fucked up from sitting in water because it was so cold down there. Probably not going to clone these ones again. Love, Terp_Turkey Oh, P.S. I ordered another pack of Bloom gear!

Terp_Turkey I left a couple side branches on the maple root to see if I can get some more yield. The hive has a ton of side branches because I super cropped it. Has any one done LST the first couple weeks of flower? Is that a thing? I'm flipping next weekend.

Terp_Turkey Got a new light this week and then my carbon filter crapped out. New light is the Medic Grow 320 watt Mini Sun 2. So much better coverage and much brighter than the smaller light I had. Now that one is in the veg tent. Super excited to see the quality and yield increase! Let's growwwwww

Terp_Turkey We looking ok so far. I got another vpd humidifier but didn't hook it up to this tent yet. The Hive is starting to have a slight tropical fruit smell to it already. Maple Root has some cool purple hairs coming out now. I also love the leaves on the Hive plant, they have this real spikey look to them.

Terp_Turkey This week they were definitely done stretching and starting to fill it their flowers. I was able to scrog the Maple Root on the left by lowering the net on that side. Definitely excited to get a better yield off of that one because the terps were actually amazing and they will most likely be much better with this super soil. It has a slight smell to it this week but nothing special so far. The Hive I scrogged the ever living shit out of this week and hopefully I will have mucho big nugs on that one. Has a nice smell and the leaves seem to be fading a bit already which the mother plant did the exact same thing at the end. I held up a Maple Root leaf to compare to the Hive skinnier leaf. My aunt works at UConn and specializes in horticulture and said that while the broadleaf varieties seem like small, unassuming plants, they are actually metabolizing quite a lot. I can testify that the Maple Root is extremely strong in the vaporizer. Probably another month or so to go?! Wish me luck......

Terp_Turkey Good morning Getting excited for the maple root (the plant with the darker colored leaves) as I have vaped all of the one that I grew from before and now so I miss it quite a lot. The terps are amazing and it's super strong. This one should yield better because I scrogged it way better this time And did a big defoliation like the growmie mentioned doing on the 15 to 20th day of flower. The Hive plant started to reminded me of how this Hella Jelly plant smelled, like a jolly rancher fruit candy. That one is turning yellow so I gave it some Vegamatrix big and sticky and the bloom fert. It's definitely a more nutrient dependant plant. The mother plant was the same way. I didn't grow it 💯 in the Rabbit Creek super soil it was vegged some other local soil so it needs a boost. Hope you're having a great weekend Let's all hope my boss hires some more hot ladies

Terp_Turkey This week the Hive plant got super yellow and I wonder if it's having a nitrogen deficiency. I gave it the bloom fertilizer again but it seems still locked out of nitrogen. Oh well! I'll feed it some more this week for sure. I took a ton of yellow leaves off of it. It's not 💯 percent in the rabbit Creek super soil, the first like 2 1/2 gallons of soil were some other soil so I wonder if that's why it's deficient. I wonder also if the VPD has been super fucked up too because I have been looking at the stupid mars hydro vpd chart and I think that chart is wrong. I'm going to stick to the chart from Reddit. It smells good though, like overripe tropical fruit and maybe some honey coming through. The Maple Root plant is looking awesome. This one is 100 percent in the Rabbit Creek super soil. I over watered it a bit one day this week and the water just drained out so well because it has so much perlite it in. These buds are doing things they never did on the mother plant, under this new grow light and scrogged much better. I suggest anyone growing this to try to scrog it good because it's so leafy and do some defoliation after it's been flowering for 15-20 days like the growmie suggested. The first time I grew this I didn't scrog or defoliate and it only produce like an ounce but I think this one is going to do a lot better. The buds were barley formed- the most wasteful run I've had in a while. This was because it was in the back of the tent and I didn't pay it much mind. Once I tried it and cloned it however I payed much more attention to the scrog net with this plant and clearing the leaves so the light can penetrate down. This strain is really amazing in the vaporizer and I'm really pumped to try it being grown in this soil.

Terp_Turkey Dear diary These ladies have two or three weeks left probably until they are looking done. I'm super proud of the Maple Root plant in the Rabbit Creek soil. I have the VPD dialed in with the AC infinity vpd humidifier so I'm hoping for smooth sailing until the end here. The Hive is really frosty and has these trichomes with really long necks, more so than I've ever seen. MR smells like nutty, creamy gsc And The Hive reminds me of strawberry candies or something. Can I talk about my non existent love life on here? Cheers

Terp_Turkey The ladies are filling in nicely. There's a lot of amber on the leaves bit I think the buds don't have much amber yet so they definitely have some more time left. Have to check every day I think at this point. There's some white hairs still so I'm not too worried. I started flushing the Hive plant and I never fertilized the Maple Root plant because it's in that super soil 💯. I turned the light down to 80 percent this week also since 100 is straight up blasting them. The smoke report is going to be crazy so stray tuned 😂

This plant got off to a slow start due to the temperatures that I had it at. However, despite my abuse absolutely loved the new grow light. It didn't do well under my mars hydro ts1000, but it perked right up when I put it under the Medic Grow. This pheno stayed really short and had really short internode spacing, but it packs on big buds that are super dense and I don't run Co2. I can't wait to give you the terp report in a few weeks. I loved this one the first time I grew it and am so glad I took this clone.

I like the leaves on this plant how they are serrated and it looks really cool when you take close up pictures. This thing had a ton of amber so I chopped it. I hope it doesn't make it ultra indica because the maple root is very sedating. I think this one would probably be best for extractions to be honest. It's just hard to trim for me there's a lot of leaves. But they are so frosty it would be excellent to make hash lot of, I am guessing. I think the necks on the trichomes are the longest I have seen yet-
