GoodWeedBerlin Critical+ was my absolute go-to strain in the 2000s. Dinafem had stickers with designs of flowers from their genetics. On a ferry ride to Denmark, I was first smiled at by a Critical+ from one of those stickers, and 4 months later it was in full bloom in my tent back then. The productivity was a nice side effect, but the effect, taste, and smell were the convincing main features.
After Dinafem disappeared from the market, it seemed like Critical+ was lost too. At some point, I found out that Silent Seeds is the legitimate successor to Dinafem and that Critical+ survived there as a 2.0 version. After a nice chat with the Silent Seed folks at Mary-Jane two years ago, the seeds were back. I grew one outdoors, but unfortunately, I had to harvest it (at least) 2 weeks too early. The result was still convincing enough to bring it back into the tent now.
The Green Gelato aka Larry Bird aka Gelato#33 hasn't had a big history with me yet. I like dessert terps, have had good experiences with the Gelato family, and still had the single seed in the drawer.
To ease my conscience regarding the use of peat a bit, I decided to upgrade my used BioBizz Lightmix for this run and use it again.
The seedlings are still in fresh Lightmix, but in the final pots, a mix of used Lightmix with worm soil, coco (+Rhiza), rock dust, silicates, chopped stems, and sugar leaves from the last harvests, along with a finely chopped (+washed) banana peel is already maturing. By the time I transplant, there should be enough soil life back in there.
Even though 2 plants in a 40*40cm growing area may seem like a lot - with LST, it's the most productive method for me in that space.

GoodWeedBerlin The two little plants are in my kitchen setup, it's kind of like a partially open tent. This saves me the fan and provides kitchen light for the first 3 weeks. I also gave them a thin Atami mix for the rooting phase. In the small pots, I only put 75ml each, the rest went into the two prepared final pots. Tomorrow they'll go into the 8-liter final pots.

GoodWeedBerlin Two healthy young ladies have made the transition to the 8-liter pots with my BioBizz-Lightmix recycling quite well. The root area received a bit of Mycorrhizal Inoculant during repotting. After preparing the soil, I also added a few red clover seeds. They're happily germinating right now, allowing nitrogen to be released into the soil and keeping the earth loose. It's not a "must," but I like having some companion plants in the grow visually, and I still have plenty of red clover seeds. With companion plants, a grow looks less sterile and artificial (in a good way) and more like nature. Just hippie stuff, you know. 😉
Then, both of them received a neem shower twice, once before repotting and once after (RIGHT before the lights go out). Mainly as a preventive measure.
The first leaves have suffered a bit, but within a controlled range. A little windburn here, a bit of "too much light" reaction there - but I'm playing with both factors to keep the plants compact. The new growth is handling it well.
Next week, they'll move from the kitchen setup to the tent.
The Green Gelato germinated a day later and seemed to grow a bit slower. Now it's showing that after the single-finger leaves, it went straight to five-finger leaves. They took a bit longer than the three-finger ones, but they're catching up now.
The Critical+ is showing itself, just like back in the outdoor grow, as a very vigorous and fast-growing plant.

GoodWeedBerlin When I returned from my absence, I was greeted by 2 healthy, well-grown plants. Then I started with LST and accidentally topped the Critical+ 2.0. On one hand, I was a few days late to bend it (above the 2nd or 3rd node), and on the other hand, the Critical+ 2.0 has a very hollow main stem. I noticed that with the outdoor plant back then as well.
I'm letting the plants stay in the vegetative phase a bit longer than planned. Right now, the C+ only has 3 main branches. I'm waiting to switch to flowering until the secondary branches have enough foliage and stems to develop into their own colas during the flowering stretch.

GoodWeedBerlin Meanwhile, the two ladies have grown enough to fill the 40x40cm area well after the flowering stretch. So starting tomorrow, there will only be 12 hours of light, but at the full 100% of the 75-watt lamp (about 66% until flowering). The Green Gelato develops very large sun leaves, so I removed a few leaves, even though I'm usually quite cautious about leaf removal. Both received another neem shower before bedtime, as some sap sucker had taken advantage in a few spots. But it seems to be resolved. The recycled Lightmix seems to be able to compete with a fresh Lightmix at least. No deficiencies, no pH problems, and just as fluffy as a new BioBizz Lightmix.

GoodWeedBerlin The first week after switching to 12/12 at 100% light, the two used it for a first small stretch. In the first 12/12 week, I still give the Atami VGN growth mixture, after that the mixture recommended for the early flowering phase.
Tomorrow I will pack the SCROG net again, which makes it easier to continue the LST and distribute the shoots well. So not quite the classic SCROGing, but more of a "support level".

GoodWeedBerlin It's getting cozy in the tent. Except for the back corner, where a PC fan blows air from bottom to top, the area is well-covered. The Green Gelato can't handle as much fertilizer (max medium VGN dosage) as the Critical+, so by the time I mix the VGN for the main flowering, I'll probably set up 2 nutrient solutions, with the Critical+ getting the maximum recommended dose. First delicate scents are spreading in the tent. I did another top dressing with Silicate, as this is nitrogen-bound, probably the last time in this run. The plants look very healthy, the Green Gelato is very compact and strong, while the Critical+ is putting on a stronger stretch with more shoots.

GoodWeedBerlin Week 3 of flowering is always time for lollipopping, so I removed everything from the lower third (except for a few mini buds that I'll use later to get the scent on my fingers). With earlier lollipopping, the plant seems to put so much energy into trying to replace the cut leaves and shoots that the effect doesn't show the desired productivity in the top buds.
Both plants are still healthy. The Critical+ is stretching noticeably more, but that should be manageable.
In this run, I used silicate from the very beginning for the first time. I'm making that my standard. The plants seem clearly more resilient than without.

GoodWeedBerlin Both have arrived healthy in the main flowering stage, and accordingly, there's now the Atami VGN mix for the flowering phase. In contrast to the pre-flowering mix (where the C+ could handle more nutrients than the Gelato), the needs for the main flowering mix seem very similar. With the medium recommended mix, both show minimal burn marks on the leaf tips - exactly the feedback I hope for with proper nutrient settings (upper edge of tolerance). Since the Critical+ has stretched more, I raised the Green Gelato a few centimeters higher. The buds on the C+ are developing very quickly, while the Green Gelato buds appear very compact. With the first nutrient application for the main flowering, the trichome production really picked up speed. Accordingly, the smell in the tent has also become pronounced. The Green Gelato gives off a candy cloud, almost a bit artificial like with sweets. The sweetness of the Critical+ feels more natural, leaning towards lemon. The bitter part of the C+ is either not really pronounced yet or is being overshadowed by the sweetness.

GoodWeedBerlin Two completely healthy plants are in the middle of their main flowering stage. The buds of the Critical+ are still developing a bit faster than the Green Gelato, whose buds are very dense and resinous. According to the breeder, the C+ is ready after 7 weeks of flowering, while the Green Gelato is ready after 8-9 weeks. As of now (end of week 5), I would expect at least one week longer for both. Accordingly, there is still at least one week of the Atami VGN flowering mix before the ripening mix is introduced.

GoodWeedBerlin The two ladies are slowly approaching the final stretch. Since the Critical+ is getting there a bit faster, there are now 2 different nutrient mixes starting today. Continuing with the main flowering mix for the Green Gelato, but the Critical+ is now being given the Atami VGN ripening mix.
In the main flowering stage, the Critical+ is not a real beauty visually, it never has been (similar to a Zkittles). But the hidden values...
On the other hand, the Green Gelato is a prime example from the Gelato family. Subtle purple and a nice layer of sugar.
Both emit a strong smell, the Critical+ is now beginning to mature towards its final scent, while the Green Gelato continues to deliver sweet candy notes to the nose.

GoodWeedBerlin The Critical+ is only getting water from today. The stated 7 weeks of flowering duration really applies to the beginning of the harvest window. Unfortunately, I have to wait for a weekend for the harvest, this weekend would be a bit early (especially since I don't want to have a week without nutrients before the harvest), next weekend a bit late, considering the colors of the trichomes. The Green Gelato will now get the Atami VGN ripening mix. The trichome colors are closer to harvest than the usual flowering development. It will definitely get another 2 weeks (+), unless too much amber develops in the trichomes by then. Visually, it would definitely be worth it not to grow the GG squished into a half 40x40 tent. Structure, vitality, color, smell - no outlier in the Gelato family but a prime example.

GoodWeedBerlin At this point, the Green Gelato can't be stretched out wide enough to cover the entire area, but it can definitely spread out a bit more and enjoy its last days ripening with a little less crowding. The Atami VGN ripening mix has been given to it twice already, and the trichomes indicate that the harvest is approaching in the next few days. The amount of trichomes is extraordinary, and the smell stays in the candy section, artificially berry-like.

In 7.5 weeks of flowering, it built up a top biomass; for me, Critical+ remains the "best value" among the cultivars I know. The really decisive factors will be taste and effect, but since the 2.0 version hardly differs from the original Dinafem Critical+, I expect the same from the 2.0. Towards the end, it started to foxtail a bit, and the trichome coloration progressed rapidly, so it was clear that it should be harvested today. The smell at harvest time is a mix of skunky and lemony, which I love about it. I’m giving one star less for its appearance in the late flowering phase. Nothing that you would need to hang up high; the inner values count. But since photographing is part of the process, I’m still giving a deduction.

The Gelato also made the transition from the end of flowering to ripeness a bit faster than expected. 15% amber, 70% milky, and 15% clear - I didn't want to wait any longer. A hint of gassy has crept into the sweet candy smell. The bud of the main cola is impressive, and the side branches have decent weight too. The flowers are dense, with purple only subtly mixed into the color - it’s not significantly cooler at night than during the day here. So, it's no wonder that the colors didn't come out more vividly. The trichome density is uneven, but in the dense spots, it's already pretty intense.

GoodWeedBerlin The end of this run came a bit faster than expected. One week after the Critical+ 2.0 (53 days of flowering), the Green Gelato (60 days of flowering) also fell. Throughout the entire run, there were no issues with pests or nutrient deficiencies/excesses. The recycled Lightmix exceeded my expectations, it's a great soil. In the future, I will recycle every Lightmix at least once. Atami VGN delivered as always, and both genetics probably contributed to the hassle-free cultivation.
