This is a Laughing Buddha clone taken off a plant in veg. - my other diary, Laughing Buddha Clone (2019(I). There have been a few generations of cloning since the original Barney’s Farm seed.
I took this clone about 33 days ago. It has started to grow vigorously and was prepped to be given away to family amongst other clones. At the last minute I actually gave away Hash Plant (2019) (II), hence the diary was deleted, and I kept this plant instead. This gave the recipient a but more strain variety.
I repotted to a larger container using a light, rich mix of sunshine soil#4, sheep manure compost, worm castings, alfalfa compost, and bone meal.
Lots of water and time in the immediate future. I love Laughing Buddha ... lets do it!
41 days since being taken as a clone. Its growth has exploded and I will begin the plans to do some LST. I’ll tie the branches down. I’m happy with the progress thus far.
47 days since being taken as a clone. I have tied this plant down and spaced everything out. I will continue to train it. I haven’t given any plant food. Just vegging away.
Approx. day 54 since being taken as a clone. The explosion has happened and it adds noticeable growth every couple days. I’ve began topping it to help contain and manage the height. I also continue to tie branches where appropriate. This is the typical Laughing Buddha genes.
About day 61 since being taken as a clone. This is a true beast, a Buddha bush. I’ve tied it, topped it, but I already see forsee size as an issue. Still managing the purple streaked stems which has been common for me with Laughing Buddha and Sunshine Soil #4. I fed 24-8-16 All purpose Miracle Grow plant food with a dip of blackstrap molasses.
Approx. day 68 since being cloned. This plant is a massive bush. I transplanted into a pot that is about 10 gallons. I used VPW20 soil, blood and bone meal, sheep manure compost, worm castings, and some pulverized egg shells and used coffee grinds.
About 75 days since being taken as a clone. This is my most beast plant. It was giving me very bad space issues. It was nearing the lights and still had five weeks of veg. to go! I have already topped almost all the branches, and was just finishing making it a uniform bush. But time is a factor....
What a twist! I’m just going to place it outside! It is now thrown into the Canadian Maritime climate, which has been a poor summer so far. The typically short summer may restrict the potential of a long flowering plant like Buddha, but this thing is massive!
I top dressed the soil with VPW20, sheep manure compost, and blood and bone meal.
The current daylight hours is 15hours48minutes, it will experience darkness for the first time. The daytime high is 18 degrees celsius.
About day 82 since being taken as a clone. The environment has changed substantially for this plant since being moved outdoors - mostly rainy, cool nighttime weather, with a few blistering hot days. Canadian summers are unpredictable. I’ve got a couple weeks of veg to go I wager. I may have top dressed the soil but I see no need for liquid plant food just yet. The green is unreal.
Daytime high is predicted to be 25 degrees celsius, the daytime hours is 15hours41minutes.
About day 89 since being taken as a clone. I was in need of the big 10L container. More importantly, I live next to a lumber mill which has an incredibly bright and intrusive security flood lamp. I was aware of this and sensed the risk coming as the stock of wood ebbed and flowed behind my yard. Anything above my fence line is now flooded with nighttime light so i transplanted Laughing Buddha into the ground. This gives plenty of space to grow for a few more weeks, and stretch, and still be below the height threshold. I have to about the bottom of my garage window to work with.
I also trimmed many branches off, and trimmed up the vegetation. This was badly overgrown and was putting much energy into small, dwindling branches.
I wager about 2-3 weeks before stretch. The projected day time high is 25 degrees, rainy. The daytime length is 15hours31minutes.
Day 96. This plant has already filled in much of what I trimmed off. Should be good to go into flower in the coming weeks. I fed a bit of 24-8-16 All Purpose Miracle Grow plant food with a dip of blackstrap molasses. But, the rain generally irrigates the plant food away.
Rain today. The high is 24 degrees celsius. The daytime length is 15hours19minutes.
About 103 days since being cloned. It was a hot one today, with a daytime high of 31 degrees celsius. I’ll probably hit it with some plant food tomorrow, and may start transitioning to flowering food. I am guessing stretch will soon be upon us. The daytime length is 15hours9minutes.
Approx. 113 days since being cloned. I am officially starting to count flowering. Buddha has clearly stretched/is stretching, and is giving off a subtle smell. I fed 18-18-21 Tomato Miracle Grow plant food to help transition. Lots of vegetation and potential bud sites. Nothing visible yet...
Today’s daytime high is 28 degrees celsius. Daytime length is down to 14hours41minutes.
Day 118 since being cloned. Tally-ho! This beauty is huge! Wow, even having grown Laughing Buddha before I am impressed. I can’t wait to see pronounced buds. The projected daytime high is 19 degrees Celsius. The daytime length is 14hours17minutes.
Day 126 since being cloned. Bad picture day as it is pouring rain. There are pronounced sex hairs on the plant now, and the start of buds. Recently gave 18-18-21 Tomato Miracle Grow plant food with a dip of Earth Alive Big Blue Alga and blackstrap molasses, but am having drainage issues with the surrounding soil (the stuff I didn’t add) and so I don’t really think the plant gets much or at least all of what I give. Getting nervous as this plant is taking forever to trigger, a harvest date of mid to late October is not ideal for the Canadian Maritimes.
Daytime high is projected as 23 degrees celsius, the daytime length is 14hours7minutes.
Day 133 since being cloned. Really pronounced bud development now. Everything is coming along, no more vertical stretch, and transitioning to mid and late flower. I recently fed 2-7-7 Shultz Cactus plant food with a dip of Earth Alive Big Blue Alga and blackstrap molasses. This plant has resisted mold and insects/pests so far. The projected high is 22 degrees celsius, the daytime length is 13hours45minutes.
Day 141 since being cloned. Just chugging away, gaining density and size. Some of the branches have wonderful node spacing and will produce major buds. The leaves are doing fine and there is no sign of slowing down. I’ll be looking to give some flowering food soon and then cut off the nutrients.
It is progressing to fall quickly, most nights are getting to single digit temperatures. The daytime high today is 18 degrees celsius. The daytime length is 13hours21minutes.
Day 147 since being cloned. The weather is advancing quickly, and its getting very cold at night. Yesterday, we experienced the tail end tropical storm type after effects of Hurricane Dorian, so Buddha got beat around with winds and a ton of rain. It was still heavily overcast and rainy when I took the pictures this morning. Luckily, I don’t think the buds are big enough to worry about mold.
The projected high is 18 degrees Celsius, the daytime length is 13hours1minute.
Day 154 since being cloned. The buds are dotted up the entire branches and are massive. This plant is deceptively huge because it was tied and multi-crowned earlier on, there are many top buds. I fed 0-10-10 Alaskan Morbloom plant food with a dip of blackstrap molasses, this is the last nutrients until harvest. I have to wait a little longer for Buddha: mid to late October ideally.
The projected high is 22 degrees Celsius, the daylight length is 12hours38minutes.
Day 160 since being cloned. Look at the buds! I’m loving the size and density. Nothing to say other than I’m done applying plant food and am just waiting for the end. I’m aiming for mid October so a few weeks left. The leaves are still nice and green. You can see some nice frosty trichomes. Lots of smell, especially when disturbed - just faint and sweet.
The projected high is 22 degrees Celsius, the daytime length is 12hours18minutes.
Day 167 since being cloned. I’m guessing Laughing Buddha had around two weeks left, at earliest. The nights are getting colder but I will try to hang on as long as possible. Just water (just rain) being applied. With major weather recently behind, I’m hoping this plant will dry out a bit and gain some strength to stand back up in places. I will consider defoliating the biggest fan leaves in the final stretch.
I am setting me expectations low here: firstly, the density of indoor and outdoor grows (in my climate/location) are not comparable. This plant has vegged and grown for a long time, and the branches are quite full of bud, but its nothing like my indoor buds under LED (same strain). There is so much more vegetation. Again, in my climate and setup it looks like indoor will be superior to outdoor.
Secondly, if you have been following my outdoor grows I live near a mill which has an industrial floodlight that shines on the back of my garage and property. I was concerned with the light tampering with flowering and I aimed to keep the plants below the fence line. It is true that Buddha is below the night time glare - but an update would be my other two plants hermied BAD. I am getting many seeds in my Hash Plant and Black Indica buds. My hope here is that Buddha is enough in the dark to not take light damage, and did not get pollinated by the neighboring plants. I may not grow outdoors next year.
The projected high is 14 degrees Celsius, the daylight length is 11hours52minutes.
173 days since being cloned. The last outdoor plant standing. I defoliated this week as I don’t want any mold and don’t want water and moisture amongst dense vegetation. The mornings have been very cold and the buds are incredibly frosty and covered in trichomes at early hours. These pictures are near the end of day.
Laughing Buddha is projected for mid to late October, and its the fifth, so this is the final stretch... almost there!
The projected high today was 14 degrees Celsius, and the daytime length is 11hours32minutes.
178 days since being cloned. October 10th and I have a bit of mold (photo 10/11). I don’t really mitigate when I see mold, I just chop. Laughing Buddha has a mid to late October outdoor projected time, so I am almost at the window anyway. We are expecting rain for the next few days and so I think this is a smart time to harvest. This is the last look!
I’ll try to do the bulk pre-sunrise tomorrow morning, but I may have to do some of the smaller bud tonight after sunset in terms of time available. This plant is very frosty in the mornings so waiting for the plant to sequester nutrients is worth it with this one.
I am surprised by the lack of yellowing and general deficiencies, I really didn’t feed much all summer. I’m not sure if I just amended the soil sufficiently, or if the rare feeding was enough.
Remember that this plant has a fun story, starting as a clone indoors, getting massive, and then getting transplanted into the ground as a mature plant. Direct comparison to indoor Laughing Buddha reveals that this strain does much better indoors. The buds are much leafier outdoors, and slightly less dense. Smell is similar in both instances - strong fuel like, pungent, sort of sour.
Hopefully this plant doesn’t experience many hermaphrodite seeds [see: Hash Plant 2019 (IV) and Black Indica 2019 (II)]. My goal was to keep the plants below my perimeter fence line to hide away from a strong industrial light. My other outdoor plants were not very lucky. I’m also wondering if a stressed hermaphrodite produces seeds internally, or if it produces pollen and self pollinates. If it is the latter, I’m afraid the pollen would have fallen on Buddha as well.
The projected high today was 18 degrees Celsius, the daytime length was 11hours16minutes.
This write-up reviews a Laughing Buddha clone that was primarily grown outdoors. The original genetics comes from Barney’s Farms. This clone is a regular clone. It was rooted and grown indoors under LED lights, and then transplanted outdoors directly into the ground as a full grown plant. The projected window is mid to late October, and I cut slightly early (around October 10th) as I spotted mold on a bud.
Overall, the big detractor is my outdoor location and there was a big risk of light pollution in flower. Two nearby plants were seeded badly by a large industrial floodlight. Laughing Buddha has also experienced some seeds, although not as many. So, does a light stressed induced hermaphrodite produce pollen? Was Laughing Buddha cross pollinated by Hash Plant (and wouldn’t this produce feminized seeds)? Was Laughing Buddha also stressed from light? If this was the case it proves that light stress does not have to be direct light. Whereas I docked those other grows big time for a loss of quality through seeding, I will only subtract a small amount in this case. I suspect seeds are common in outdoor grows.
I had already performed LST before moving outdoors so this plant had many crowns that got huge. I was very happy with bud density and size, on a direct comparison the buds were less dense than Laughing Buddha indoors. The strength of Buddha’s yield comes from the bunches of bud that spot the branches. If you allow this strain to get big, it will reward you all the way up the branch. Whereas bud density was less, overall yield was much more than indoors. 134 grams would be more then I usually get indoors, and I composted lots of subpar or veggie bud - I only spend time with the nice crowns and main stems.
Taste, minus the odd seed, is nearly identical to indoors. Slightly less strong, the smells are almost the same. Fuel like, sour, not like sour diesel at all. I find the outdoor buds less harsh and pungent, and maybe more of a sweet deep undertone? Not like berries. I find Laughing Buddha hard to describe. A sour fuel is the best description, but I think that misplaces people when they think of strains they have experienced.
So overall we have determined that Laughing Buddha is a huge yielding strain indoors and outdoors. It is resistant to mold and pests where other plants are vulnerable. This is good because it allows you to keep it outdoors longer, and it has a looooong flowering time. In the Canadian Maritimes that trait is important. Its unclear on how it did in terms of stress in my particular environment. Taste is pretty much the same, just less pronounced with the outdoor version. Bud density is comparable both indoors and outdoors. Other than seeds and just not quite the same quality bud as indoor, I am quite happy with this strain as always.
Nothing to report. The light stress thing is well documented. The seeds are more well developed than the others I experienced this year but the plant was also living much longer. Not sure what I’ll do with the seeds, something immature and mischievous. I really didn’t pain myself with harvest. I cut off alot of bud, but I have low patience and tossed a bunch too. Outdoor grows are much more veggie and a hassle in this regard. I didn’t give all that much food outdoors and this plant was still green at the end. I’m not sure if that is strain dependent or I just did a good job staying ahead.
She’s going to explode 💥 with buds 🌲🌲🌲🌲👍🏼 The flavor of LB is epic. Fkd up and was enjoying yesterday probably a little too late in the day b/c I was up until 4:30am- she’s definitely a strong 💪🏻 Sativa
Sounds like you have a magic recipe 👍🏼 Laughing Buddha is a great 👧, have one now in the Single Cola Bitches that’s really making me want to scrOG one 🥅
