DudeGrowsWeed Hi there GD Crew!!
This is a grow I started a few weeks ago, but am just getting the time to get the diary going. Over these few weeks I've had some successes and some failures. Here's the basic timeline:
May 15th - Late afternoon I started the following seeds by first scuffing the seed shells using an emory board. I put a tiny pinch of Recharge in solo cups filled about 1/4. Then I soaked the seeds in individually labeled cups overnight:
• 5- Night Owl Chem Town F3 Auto Regs
• 3- Night Owl Banana Basecamp
• 3- Night Owl DDOS OG
• 2- Fast Buds CBD 20:1
May 16th - All seeds were sinking to the bottoms of their solo cups by morning. I then planted one DDOS OG in my 2x4 tent and one Banana Basecamp in my 2x3 tent. All remaining seeds were planted in my outdoor raised bed. The planting sites were arranged in the raised bed in a 3-2-3 pattern.
• 3 Chem Town across the back.
• 2 Banana Basecamp mid-left & 2 CBD 20:1 mid-right.
• 2 Chem Town front left and center & 2 DDOS front-right.
*May 16th was a new moon and the beginning of a rising Taurus moon. Some say there are rooting advantages in planting with a new moon cycle so I thought I'd try it (I don't think it makes a difference btw)
May 18th - DDOS and Banana Basecamp both popped in the indoor tents.
May 20-22 - 3/5 Chem Town, 2/2 DDOS 2/2 Banana Basecamp and 0/2 20:1 popped.
May 24 - I decided I needed some replacements for the seed sites that were now vacant. I tried to start my last 20:1 seed, Mephisto's Wedding and Star Froots (MVG). I soaked these seeds for 24 hours and then moved to paper towels in a zip lock bag the next day.
May 26 - Star Froots starts showing tap root and I plant it as a replacement in the front-left site.
May 27 - By this date I had a couple of losses of seedlings. One of the Chem Town and one of the Banana Basecamp died off. So I started 2 Green Crack CBD 1:1 seeds - soak, paper towel...
Cheap dirt lesson... Around this time I started wondering what was happening. In preparing the planting sites I did place down some Seed Starting mix. I made the mistake I always advise against and bought the cheap shit at the Dollar General. When I dug around the planting sites that failed I discovered that cheap starter mix was below the surface bone dry, like sand. So I dug deeper and wider to mix that cheap shit in with the good organic living soil from the bed. I also carefully dug around the remaining living seedlings and found various degrees of the same dryness at all sites. I was able to get plug sized soil clumps with the seedlings put to the side as I mixed the dry stuff with the good stuff at all remaining plant sites. I also moved one of the Chem Town's and one of the DDOS to different locations. Chem Town's were now center-front and center-rear. DDOS were now right-front and left-rear.
June 6 - I finally started to see some signs of tap roots from the Green Crack CBD 1:1 seeds, but nothing from Mephisto's Wedding or the 20:1 seeds. I decide to plant the 1:1 seeds in a solo cup (I also put the 20:1 seed in the same cup towards the rear). I then started a fresh Mephistos Wedding and Creme de la Chem seed in separate solo cups. No soaking or paper towels this time. I swear I have the worst success with soaking and paper towels. I get much better germination rates germinating in soil.
One more loss... What looks like a squirrel was digging in my garden and took out one of my last two Chem Town's. So I'm down to just one Chem Town now. Kinda sucks. But that's nature.

DudeGrowsWeed This is a 3 week update...
Indoors, all is great! DDOS and Banana Basecamp are both humming along happily. Finally got my ACI Controller AI+ replacement set up in the tents. I have the main Controller AI+ unit mounted on the side of the 2x3 tent about 2/3's of the way up. I have the Temp/Humidity probe fed to the 2x4 tent and is also mounted on the side of the tent at the same height. This allows me to monitor the conditions of both tents from the ACI app. However, there are limitations to running temperature/humidity triggers based on the built in sensor and the sensor probes at the same time.
I am now running all fans on either cycles or fixed on speeds. Currently the exhaust for the 2x4 is fixed at a speed of 3, the exhaust fan for the 2x3 is fixed at a speed of 1. The S6 fans mounted higher in the tents are fixed at a speed of 1. The S6 fans mounted lower are on 14 minutes at speed 1, 1 minute at speed 3 cycles. At the soil level I'm averaging around 70% rh and 79f degrees. At the sensor locations I'm averaging around 45% rh and 85f degrees.
Lighting Setup
I have all lights mounted as high as possible in the tents, with the exhaust fans and carbon filters placed outside the tents and sucking air out of the top ports of each tent. The two SF1000's in the 2x4 were set to max (10) and hit a PPFD of 204 and DLI of 18 at the planting site. I then dimmed the VS2000 in the 2x3 to the exact same readings. At the current plant heights DLI is up to 19. By leaving the lights mounted and set to these dimming settings I'm hoping the plants will naturally grow into their next ideal DLI range. I'm also running my lights 24/0 to maintain consistent environments without any temperature or humidity swings. So far, that's been working great.
Pest Control: Gnat Management
You will see in the pictures I have had a bit of a fungus gnat issue. They are under control now and some of the pictures show yellow cards that were in place for several days in a row. Now that the roots have hit the SIP reservoirs I have been able to allow the top soil to dry back and I also scattered some Mosquito Bits across the surface. Mosquito Bits help break the breeding pattern of fungus gnats, yellow cards catch the already hatched adults, dry soil makes a inhospitable environment for them to start over again. That's the idea at least. I was keeping the top of the soil more moist than usual to get the main seeds and cover crop established - which led to the fungus gnats.
Indoor Setup: DIY 27-Gallon SIPs
Indoors I'm growing in 27 gallon DIY SIP containers. These were built from 27 Gallon Black and Yellow totes I purchased from Home Depot. I also purchased some 4" flexible irrigation pipe that I used to line the bottom of the totes. I left one longer length piece of pipe in each tote that bends upward at the corner and I use for checking water level and filling the reservoirs. Above the flexible irrigation pipe is a layer of lava rocks. Then its almost 2 full bags of Coast of Maine Stonington Blend Growers Mix. I also have live red wiggler worms in each tote, approximately one pound of worms in each tote.
I'm honestly still working on the ideal top dress routine and I think I went a bit too heavy towards the end of my previous harvest. I'm planning on sticking on a 2 tbsp Stonington Blend Plant Food and 2 tbsp Fish Bone Meal on a monthly basis and see how that goes. I'm seeing a little burn on some of the older leaves, but the newer growth is looking great! Already showing pistils!!
Outdoor Setup: Sub-Irrigated Raised Bed
Outdoors I'm growing in a raised bed I built several years ago. This is probably the 5th or 6th year growing in this bed. It was also built to be a SIP bed. But I used PVC pipe and drilled holes in the pipe that's below the soil and filled the areas between the PVC pipe at the bottom with baseball to softball sized rocks. The soil in the bed is a combination of Coast of Maine Stonington Blend Growers Mix as well as their Raised Bed Mix. Its probably 2/3 Stonington Blend and 1/3 Raised Bed Mix.
I did not use the bed in 2025 due to some health issues (I could tell you stories...). But have reamended the bed this spring with 15tbs Stonington Blend Plant Food and 15tbs Fish Bone Meal starting in mid-April and have some cover crop going. The bare area (without cover crop) is where the squirrel had been digging and I then dug it up further looking to see if it left an acorn in my bed. I did place down new cover crop seed, but it hasn't come up yet.
