First grow - 4 uncommon bag seeds from what I was told was “birthday cake”
Germination date: 4/14/2019
Starting with one 135watt horticultural Lighting group quantum board. 3 x 3 grow tent added. 4” fan and filter installed. Moving along. Happy 420!
First nutrients feed april21st 2019 - (only peat pellets and water until now)
April 22 - transplant to 1 gallon pots of pure coco coir
April 23rd - Added a second 135 watt quantum board - horticultural lighting group - this time 3000k - I got a decent deal on eBay
April 25 - added humidifier
Transplanted to 5 gallon fabric pots
Built basic drip system
Plants got heavily stressed when I got sick and let them dry out and humidity got way too high when fan went off briefly I think.
I removed some dead growth
High stress training - topping and branch removal - light defoliation
Low stress training - tie down, bending
Upgraded to larger rez tank
Turned up the wattage and voltage of the two hlg boards and I put two of my sold trips into the tent two SolStix into the tent - now at 400 watts total wattage for the LEDs
Pretty great week- plants really seemed to respond well to the topping and training.
Humidity too high soon
Week 6 - last week of veg. Really wish I added a scrog net- next grow. Or maybe next week?
Upgraded waste and feeding system - and went away for a few days with no issues - the automation works fairly well
**thank you to Dr. MJ Coco of cocoforcannabis.com
Really filled up the canopy.
Flipped to 12/12 on Sunday night (5/26/19)
Added canna boost to nutrient mix this week
Feeding 4 times per day - dialed in to a pretty even time to waste - approx 15% runnoff with 2-3 minute fertigation events (varies based on amount of hours since last feeding - 4.5; 4.5; 6; or 9 for now - may go to 5 feedings with more even spacing next week
Training and pruning
Upgraded to 6” can lite filter and ac infinity fan
Built and installed scrog on final night of week 7 (6/1/19) [pretty late in it’s grow to add a scrog! But I’m gonna try!)
Lollipopped a bunch
Tucking and training -
Week 8 - second week of flower
One plant is much smaller - still not confident on sex of any of them ... maybe that small one is a male - I’m guessing they’re all female tho. Either way i may need to slaughter that little guy - the other plants are just overtaking the tent - might not be worth keeping that little one in there.
Update 6/5/19 - I’ll take some updated pics tomorrow - I’m 95% sure I have FOUR out of four female plants.
Just picked up some yucca to try - and I got some more led hangers so maybe I’ll upgrade the lights today - the rapidLED far red flower initiator isn’t coming until Wednesday unfortunately but I have two more SolStix I could add.
Update 6/5/19 - far red flower initiator and the two (now 4) solstix are installed - I need to make a simple aluminum frame - maybe this weekend
Picked up some 29% H202 to clean the rez tank and pumps and filter etc (not to put in the nutes for the plants tho!)
Got a better air pump and airstone for the rez.
New Vivosun oscillating fan - wtf!? Made for grow tents but can’t turn without stopping on the sides of the tent!? - I emailed them maybe it’s defective.
Beginning week 9
Plans this week:
Make a long time lapse while away this weekend - post more photos too
Lollipop
Tuck and tie a bit
Possibly build a second scrog level?? Thoughts anyone??
Research and purchase or build a “grow room controller” - tent: temp, rh, light(?), co2(?) — rez: ph, ec, temp, water level - maybe more stuff like tie in the cameras, also basement temp and rh, fan and lights and pump contro. Nutrient dosing and ph control would be awesome but likely too pricey— but I’m a geek and this will be fun! I’d prefer a prebuilt system but I’m not totally opposed to building an Arduino/pi style solution (reliability and time to get it right are concerns tho - plus I have an arcade cabinet project I’d like to get to soon) — **ANY THOUGHTS OR ADVICE ANYONE???
To do list:
I picked up some angle aluminum and I plan to finally make a single frame for the numerous LED lights
Mount things to the wall (temp and humidity sensors, timers, utility light, etc)
General cleanup and house keeping - wire management etc
Install new portable air conditioner in the basement - this will be a bit of a project - casement windows and other issues
Hopefully this week: install a utility sink in the basement and tie into the water lines and waste lines of the house (no more carrying water and waste upstairs!!)
Installed portable AC finally. What a project / still need to do some finish work like paint and screw in the well cover etc - but it’s working.
Raising the lights is such a pia. I really gotta make a darn frame! This week I hope (I said that last week) [the plants are way too close to the lights this week]
Started mammoth P.
Plants are huge and smell pretty nice with the tent open. Now that the ac and dehumidifier are operating it really doesn’t smell in the basement. Flowers are really developing.
I’ve done some super cropping they’re so big.
Plans this week - house keeping and cleanup; prune dead leaves, tie a few tall stalks down; maybe start Canna PK booster (no - next week I think). Take more pics. Pulse sensor comes this week. I’d love to figure out and install the HLG 36 UVA. Manage humidity and temp. Move drain bucket into tent (change to smaller container with new holes and grommets); install utility sink in basement (no more carrying water and waste up and down stairs! This is a work in progress).
6/21/19 Led frame is coming along - tougher than I thought. I took down all the lights at lights out tonight and hope to finish in the morning.
Plans this week: new bluelab guardian connect coming (ph/ec/temp monitor for the reservoir tank) I think I’ll finally mount things neatly on the wall. More pruning the lower canopy; and some low stress training maybe. I hope the flowers keep maturing and start really gaining some girth this week. I’m excited and hopeful but a bit scared of the pk booster and overall nutrient level/EC increase - I’ll keep watch for nutrient lockout etc. Other: Utility sink/drain/water line install I hope. This grow is taking up all my “project time” - Hopefully I can finally spend some time on my arcade cabinet project starting this week.
The plants didn’t get light for 37 hours the other day (6/23?) . I had removed the lights to build the frame. I thought I had everything ready for a quick swap. And then I got sick; daughter’s car broke down; my plan for the light frame wouldn’t work; I ran out of angle aluminum; and did I mention I got sick. Anyway they missed only one 12 hour light period plus 1 extra hour (plus their normal dark periods before and after- so that’s how I calculate 37 hours) They actually seemed to mature and redden a bit faster with the extra darkness. Gotta think positive.
Upgraded the tent! (6/24/19) It’s now a hydropolis 3x3 “plus size” (extra few inches bigger all around and 8 inches taller than my old vivosun) - much nicer. Wow what a tough job. Very tight space in my room. This is way too late to be moving plants to a new tent - but sliding the old removable tent bottom with all four plants and scrog all at once over to the new tent wasn’t as bad as I feared. Setting up the whole tent again and moving everything was a pain in the ass though.
I did a little pruning of the back side of the plants which I hadn’t gotten to in a while - some dead leaves under the scrog mostly. I wonder if all this trim (from recent days too) is gonna yield any amount of even sorta decent bubble hash. I’ll freeze it and try.
I hope they like their new home. I did a lot of the swap and setup with the lights totally off in my basement and using only a green headlamp. Argh.
I partially failed in my effort to make a complete aluminum frame. I didn’t include the 4 solstix in the frame. But I did make a frame for the two HLG 135s - I re-hung the solstix individually and with their lame individual drivers that are underpowered (I’ll get to the the rewiring and driver replacement one of these days)- I added the far red puck, and I finally added the new HLG QB36 UVA (I’ll try it for the first time tomorrow - with sunglasses on!) - update: tried it. Seems pretty sweet - wish I had some directions or some idea if I should only be using only one stick like I am or the entire 4 that I think they sent me in error.
I’ve got a reasonable amount of space between my lights and top of canopy now (15+ inches) - if the damn stretch is finally done I might be ok. I really shoulda flipped sooner like everyone warned me. Live and learn.
The utility sink/drain line/water line is still not installed - so I’m still carrying water up and down stairs which sucks.
I’ll use pk13/14 this week after this rez tank empties and I give it a good cleaning in a day or so. I’ll also continue to use mammoth p and all the other nutes. - ok tank cleaned and making a new soup for feeding later today (pk 13/14 started on 6/25/19 11:30pm - I plan to use it for 7 days??)
I changed the drain/waste bucket to a small bin - and placed it inside the tent — it works well with the condensate pump- so tomorrow I’ll drill holes in it, install grommets and run the drain lines to it permanently - which will be much better than the 5 gallon bucket sitting outside the tent in my small space - plus the gravity drain lines were a pain coming out of the tent and I had to weigh them down to keep their height below 2.5” - now it’ll be just one pumped line. - ok done. I drilled a bit too fast and cracked two of the holes. Siliconed it for now- I’ll replace the little bucket this week or next - it’s fine for now. (6/25/19) So much better! - now no more gallons of water weighing down the drain lines and no more drain lines coming out of the tent - except for the single pumped line that goes out the standard tent hole. And so much neater in the tent etc. Woot!
**I think I may have some hermaphrodites/seeds (maybe just false seed pods I hope??)... oh no! Thoughts?? (See pics) [also I think I may have found a male part with pollen!- see pic... I hope I’m wrong] - **update - ok definitely hermies. Continuing.
—-
Still struggling with humidity.
**I even tried adding a second dehumidifier . Obviously I need a new strategy - I’m just not sure what.**update: It’s been lowering a bit - down to 51% approx. still want to get lower
Only a few more days to complete my plan of one week of Pk 13/14 with multiple daily fertigation. -
Highest base nutes and highest EC for the entire grow. I think I’ll start lowering it on the next tank. They’ve got some tip burn for sure. - **update - **update: finished the week of pk13/14 - added terpinator; lowered base nutes - I’ll be adding sugeree on next tank (instead of terpinator)
**I think I may have some hermaphrodites/seeds (maybe just false seed pods I hope??)... oh no! Thoughts?? (See pics) [also I think I may have found a male part with pollen!- see pic... I hope I’m wrong]
Yes Looks like there are some seeds already pretty well developed and I see pollen on the branch and leaves that was dropped out of that pollen sac. All is not lost though. Best thing you can do now is try to stay on top of it and pick off every pollen sac that develops before they open and stop as much pollination as you can to save the buds.
should I harvest now? Frickin hermies. So many seeds. Should I at least start to flush?? (Should I use/buy canna flush or something similar or just maybe cal/mag and ph 6.1ish water?) Or wait a week maybe and then flush for a week? I kinda just want this grow to end so I can start fresh with good known genetics. But I do want to try to have some decent smoke and yield if possible (maybe a lost cause??) THOUGHTS???
Update 9/8 - ok lowering nutes; preparing for this to be the last week (or less) before a week (or less) of flush
Day 49 update (Sunday 7/14/19):
Almost time to chop! I think my humidity is finally going to be manageable for the drying- the second dehumidifier helped enough it seems.
I cut out the base nutes (which for a few days were at quarter strength). I decided to stop with sugaree. No more cal/mag - I guess I should have cut that out weeks ago even in coco? So many different trains of thought. So I’ve now been flushing for a couple days using only water and canna boost and cannazyme along with mammoth p and hydroguard (ppm is at 200). I’m not PH correcting the reservoir tank and it’s up to 6.9/7.0 ph (I actually added a tiny bit of ph down before I decided to not worry about it) - I’m not sure if I like this strategy (seems to be an unsettled debate about ph correcting during final flush) I’ll switch to FloraKleen and water only (and still not ph corrected) for the last few days (in a few days or so - maybe a bit longer) THOUGHTS ANYONE??
I went to bed last night looking at pictures of bud rot and when I woke up I was convinced I had some. I actually chopped my first bud off the plants! one of my possible mold suspects (and one of the largest).
Manhandled it - dug around - (I did use gloves and I did sorta try to be careful but...) I probably lost and damaged a bazillion trichomes - but.... it’s fine! No mold/bud rot at all. Beautiful actually. Some of the little fan leaves just turned prematurely yellow awhile ago and some extra areas of red hairs that concerned me but It’s great! Super stinky. Super nice. Dense. Pretty. I’m hanging that one nice big bud in the flower tent above the lights and in the corner away from a direct fan breeze (this is not at all ideal - the main harvest will be done in darkness; with no other humid plants in the tent; with proper air flow; lower temps; and they’ll have had a full flush unlike this nice cola I chopped with its “partial”
flush only (see above) . It’ll be nice to experiment with taste before and after a flush since there seems to be so much debate about this. But I suppose my dry will differ too so not a very controlled test. This bud seems to be plenty mature and ripened - some amber trichomes - so I think this one bud chop may turn out to be a nice experiment caused by my neurosis about non existent bud rot)
Woot.

Week 14. Harvest
Happy Harvest Day!
(Unknown) believed to be “Birthday Cake” - Custom Breeder & Strain
Chopped on day 56 (exactly 8 weeks since the 12/12 flip) - I wasn’t planning on being so exact but that’s just how it worked out.
Wow what a job! Trimming is long hard work.
I wound up experimenting with some dry trimming and some wet trimming. I’m curious to see if I notice much of a difference. But I also got incredibly bored wet trimming which was my original plan. Also now that the growing plants with their humid vegetation are out of the tent, the humidity is actually a bit too low now. So I left some branches with sugar leaves and unmanicured (all trichomes free fan leaves have been removed)
I collected well over a pound of good trim. It’s in the freezer and I plan to make bubble hash.
I’ll update this journal in a week or so with my flower, trim, & hash yields; as well as my overall thoughts and final assessment.
Thanks for looking!
Update - harvest totals:
Harvest Totals:
Dry trimmed bud total:
217g (7.65oz)
Wet trim (frozen): 23.28oz
Dry trim (jarred): 18 grams
Water Hash: not known yet (first run if less than half wet trim yielded a sad 5 grams)
Keif & scissor/finger hash: not known yet: very little - 1/2 gram or so?
