Flowering 2x4 was continuously too cool even with all the lights at 90%. So I installed some inner canopy lighting, little S16 bars from AC Infinity. and then I set the lights up more as an array and angled the plants so the highest parts are in the center now.

I was struggling with some of the earlier Platinum Lantz seeds, so I started looking more closely at my germination process instead of immediately assuming there was a weakness in the line. These are some of the physically largest seeds I’ve ever germinated, and that made me wonder if I needed to adjust how I was approaching them. I changed up my recent germination method to give the seeds more even moisture around the entire shell and let them fully open before planting. This time, all three seeds germinated successfully with no real issues, at an average germination temperature of about 82°F. At this point, I think it’s much more fair to say the earlier problems were probably on my end rather than assuming the genetics were weak. There could still have been other variables involved, but after going 3/3 with the updated method, I’m comfortable taking responsibility and learning from it. That’s part of why I’m documenting this project honestly. If I’m going to evaluate a line fairly, I need to be just as willing to question my own process as I am the genetics.

I always use the same clean three-compartment baby snack container with RO-moistened coffee filters for germination. For these last three Platinum Lantz seeds, I changed the method by wrapping each seed fully in the filter “clam style” instead of leaving it exposed on top, and I raised the average germination temperature from my usual ~77°F to about 82°F. That revised setup gave me 3/3 germination. When I checked on them this morning at 41 hours, I honestly wasn’t expecting even one to be ready yet, so I was very happy to find that all three had germinated with taproots already coming out. :) I changed a couple variables this time, so I can’t say for certain whether the biggest difference was the warmer temperature, the more even moisture coverage around the entire seed, or a combination of both. The compartments are translucent, so normally I can simply lay the seeds on the coffee filters and monitor them without opening the container, and that method has worked for me for years. Since these were wrapped in the coffee filters this time, I held my phone light underneath the container to check them. I could just barely see what looked like a taproot through one of the filters, although I thought it might just be a shadow from where I had folded it. I opened the little “clam” to check, and sure enough—it was a taproot. Then I checked the other two and found all three ready to go. We’re now running five Platinum Lantz plants. The final test obviously isn’t over yet, but compared with my original attempts and the three subsequent failures, we are finally off to the races. So far it has taken 10 seeds to get me to 5 plants, with 2 seeds still left as backups. Part of me definitely wonders whether one of the seeds that didn’t make it could have carried some amazing trait I’ll never get to see, but that’s also part of the game. Survival of the fittest. And out of those first attempts, I still ended up with two plants that are absolutely killing it, so I’m feeling a lot better about where this project is headed now.
