In August earlier this year, Brightfield Group, a cannabis research firm, surveyed 2,400 participants in HelloMD. The study revealed that 42% of participants had tossed pharmaceutical drugs and have turned to CBD. More than a quarter of those surveyed said that they use CBD in one way or another to help treat arthritis, which was found to be one of the top conditions in the study. There have been numerous studies proving the efficacy of CBD for treating inflammation and arthritis: Studies show that CBD can significantly reduce acute arthritis, which is linked to many different kinds of joint disorders. CBD has also been shown to be beneficial in reducing the pain caused by various forms of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis which is one of the most painful and prevalent. A study conducted by GW Booz from the University of Mississipi Medical Center revealed that CBD is useful in reducing the impact of inflammation on oxidative stress, which further decreases the risk of organ dysfunction and damage. Oxidative stress and inflammation also cause many other diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes type 1 and 2, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and more. Research shows that cannabinoids help treat inflammation by suppressing the inflammatory response and diminish symptoms by inducing apoptosis in activated immune cells , as well as suppress chemokines and cytokines in inflammatory sites.

A study conducted by the University of California-Irvine revealed that CBD may be effective in treating schizophrenia just as well as other antipsychotic medications for the condition, and at a lesser cost. According to Daniele Piomelli, co-author of the study and professor of pharmacology at UC-Irvine, “The results were amazing, not only was CBD as effective as standard antipsychotic drugs, but it was also essentially free of the typical side effects seen with antipsychotic drugs.” Despite the mounting evidence that CBD acts the same as antipsychotic medications, there is also increasing data about the importance of choosing the right strain because the ratio of THC to CBD will affect the success, or lack of, when using it for medication. Additionally, CBD is much more fast-acting whereas pharmaceutical drugs often take several days or weeks for its effects to be felt. For patients who have severe episodes, this can be brutal. In a study, researchers analyzed the effectiveness of CBD in animal models with depressive and anxious behavior. Once they were injected with CBD, the mice began to show normal behavior once again.
