So begins my 2nd Kalashnikova grow. I planted one too early in the season outdoor and it went into flower very early. This turned out ok as I got an early harvest. This one should now go the distance as I have planted this one in mid October (Southern Hemisphere).

Kalashnikova is on track at this stage. No real setbacks, and good weather. First triple leaves have appeared. It’s nice to come home from work and see the little changes that occur each day.

This week Kalashnikova started to change a lot, and showed it’s bushy / branching characteristics. It is pretty clear this plant is going to grow nice and wide. It has started to take off, so much so that I gave the plant its first topping. Probably too early, but it has recovered well. It seems that one of the new growths is outperforming the other at this stage.

This week I transplanted Kalashnikova into a larger pot of organic soil and perlite. She has handled the move perfectly and continued to thrive. Each new topping growth has regrown evenly and nicely. It was at this time my last Kalashnikova began to flower so I am very encouraged that there are no signs of flowering this time around, and I will be able to see what this strain can really produce. We have excellent warm weather at the moment, except we have not had any decent rain for too long. I collected rainwater from the last deluge, but have nearly run out so reluctantly I may be going back to filtered tap water shortly.

I tied Kal down nice and flat this week, with no damage done thankfully. I’ve got 10 - 12 nice growth sites forming now. I have spotted a few hairs under the new growths which i will keep an eye on over the next week. It’s getting 14 daylight hours now so there is no way it should flower, but I’m a bit concerned because my last 2 plants both went off early.

Well once again I have only made it to 6 weeks and my plant has bolted. Clusters of pistils have formed rapidly and the first buds are appearing. Not that I really mind as I can switch feeds and get a nice early harvest if all goes well. I just don’t get why it keeps happening???,, My plant gets great exposure to sun and is getting about 14 hours each day now. In fact it is only about 3 weeks until the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. I have fed only bio Vega and water till now,, I am really at a loss as to why my plants flower so quickly. Regardless of this, Kal has had an explosion of beautiful growth this week and is looking lush. I have given its first major defoliation and created a homemade screen, but I may be a tad late as I have been caught off guard with the early flowering. Hoping for a good bit of stretch in coming weeks and all should be good😊

A good week of stretch for the Kalashnikova this week has branches punching through the screen. Bud growth was good but I am now hoping to accelerate this by beginning light deprivation each evening

After a slow week Kalashnikova has taken off again. Last week I decided to go back to light deprivation technique to encourage flowering. After 1 week of this the buds have lined up all the way along the branches and have increased in density. The smell is getting stronger and the vertical growth has also slowed. A final decent defoliation today and I am expecting some nice changes in the days to follow.

There are definitely some differences between this Kalashnikova and the first one I grew, even though they came from the same packet. I am now noticing some purple hairs on the top buds. There was definitely no purple on the first one. Also the smell is different,, really similar but there is a subtle difference that I can definitely notice. Possibly not as strong and pungent as the other one, but still lovely aroma that fills the backyard. It will be really interesting to see if this difference translates into the smoke. Another good week with buds growing together and thickening up enough to cover the stem. Some good resin production too. I’m thinking somewhere between 2 and 3 weeks to go.

It feels like an uneventful week for Kalashnikova this week. It doesn’t seem to have changed all that much. For this reason I took the support and Scrog off as the plant has formed into the ideal shape and is holding its shape. I hope this will allow more direct light access and help the buds to fatten up. Maybe I am just being impatient as it’s only 5 weeks of flowering. A few crispy tips so I have backed off the notes this week, and a rare couple of days of rain has been a real bonus.

Kalashnikova seems to have kicked along a bit this week. I don’t think I will get really fat buds like last time, but the buds do seem more dense on this one. A lot more red hairs now and I can see it maturing more rapidly,, hoping to push it out a couple more weeks and fatten those nugs

Week 13 and Kalashnikova is Pretty much ready to go anytime now. I will harvest this weekend. Good amber trichrome production and a really nice smell. Buds are more dense than last time. Definitely a different experience this time around. I’m really happy with the size of the buds after only 13 weeks growing outdoors. Really looking forward to seeing if the sweetness in the aroma is also in the taste. I have pretty much phased out all nutrients, just on filtered water and nothing at all for the last 2 days. She is ready👍

All in all the Kalashnikova has been a great strain to grow. It is a lovely looking plant, visually attractive with buds that begin like popcorns and swell up into beautiful big clumps spread across the branches. Short and stout and lovely to watch it grow.

This is my 2nd Kalashnikova, and only harvested the 1st one in late November. There are distinct differences between the two. The shape and bud formation are the same, and the grow time roughly the same. But it smells much different, unbelievable sweet if you touch the buds. Almost like if you were holding a piece of bubblegum from your mouth. I never used to believe when someone said their weed tasted sweet, but I have never smelled such an unusually sugary aroma. Although it smells beautiful, it’s nothing like the earthy, woody smell of my first kal. Also, although the buds are much longer this time, they are far less dense and almost airy. Resin seems confined to the buds which are quite sticky, but the surrounding leaves weren’t that frosty or sticky when trimming. I guess although bigger, I will rate this as slightly behind Kal no.1. Will need to update after the cure to see if that sweetness is transferred into the smoke. All in all Kal has been fun and although I would grow it again, I have a few I would like to try ahead of it. Update - I have changed the “taste like” icons from sweet to earthy. Although the plant and buds smelled super sweet and fruity during the grow, the cured buds do not. They smell and smoke exactly like my first Kal. Earthy, woody, musky and rich is the best description. I really like the strong taste. It stays in your nose for hours afterwards. Best smoked with a dry drink like a ginger beer or ice water. Pretty strong shit! Not a real creeper, comes on pretty quick and lasts around 90 mins. Another week of curing before the boveda packs go in, the taste can get a touch better with another week or 2

@Shooey, I think if it’s watering, leaves would be droopy. And if it leads to root rot it wouldn’t be just light green. You would loose leaves. Tip burns, a tad strong on nutes. Yogurt - theoretically it doesn’t make a difference. My preference is for the fruity type. I hope that part of the fruity smell get in the buds. LOL. It make real difference in potency and how buds get wet and sticky.

@Med_in_Tropic,awesome med, and a happy new year to you too mate. Thanks as always for your advice. So you don’t reckon it’s the watering hey?? I think you are right about pheno for sure, you can see my first diary was also a Kalashnikova from the same order from greenhouse seeds,, and there are vast differences not only in colour, but also bud density and shape. I am feeding only organic bloom boost from bio canna, as this is for mid flowering onwards I am guessing it should be low nitrogen?? I am getting crispy tips on the leaves too so I think this usually means my feed is a tiny on the strong side but nothing to be too concerned as the rest seems really healthy. I would like to try the yoghurt. Is it pure / natural plain the best? Just mix 4 - 1 with water right? Cheers med

I think people mix in genetics and purposele mutate plants to suit main market in Europe. So with different environmental cues than what they were designed for, they behave weirdly. Flowering too fast is not bad. Some vegged for three months at 12 hours. Most Just hermie.

@Shooey, just discovered concept of doubling chromosomes to get yield. If it is public now, it means the avant garde people had been doing this for a while. This makes the variation bigger Cheers.

Shooeycommented5 years ago
@Med_in_Tropic, I think you are spot on med,, these commercial seeds are very sensitive. I even think further mutation with ruderalis (auto) has even more variables. Watching various diaries I notice a lot of differences in pheno’s, bud density and yields. All the best Med👍

@Med_in_Tropic, thanks Med👍 I have been a bit worried about this one but she seems to have picked up a lot in the last week. And thanks for your advice too. I did end up changing the water to filtered and started shading her after mid day, as I think it may have been some heat stress. Because I am force flowering by light deprivation each night, it is finishing flower in the hottest longest days of the year, probably not ideal but does help with the quicker harvest time,, I’m very happy about that😊

@EZgrower, hi EZ,, thanks very much mate. I really appreciate the positive thoughts. I definitely prefer joints my friend. I really savour the taste and enjoy the time out for a few minutes, also after 20 odd years of smoking I can’t really handles the bongs anymore,, getting old I guess😃. I will keep up to date on your diaries from now on,, all the best bro👍
