Excited to have the Jack F1 sprout up and growing!
Will be running this grow as directed from Spliff Seeds as far as lighting schedule and nutes go. I will not be letting the plant veg too long. The tent is 6X4X4, this is a heavy sativa strain. Height will be of the essence. I only grow for personal medical use. Hoping for good medicine here. Not quantity. Nutes are Dr. Earth soil and amendments. Nutes should be sparse according to Spiff, so the first couple rounds will be skipped.
Spliff Seeds’ genetics continue to amaze me.
This girl had a little drama off the bat, she was overwatered. I am using a new soil and haven’t had any experience with it until now. It holds moisture too well if you are frequently watering. Not only did she bounce back, but she has exploded in vigor.
The breeder suggests not topping this one as she produces one main cola. I would think, at this rate, I will be flowering her next week or maybe the week after. Amazing genetics!
As per Spliff’s suggestions, there have been no nutrients added yet, other than the organic ingredients in the soil. These consist of Alfalfa meal, bone meal, earthworm castings, and kelp meal.
Week three started out with this plant looking for water and space. Not as bad as her sister in the tent, Amnesiac, but starting to show signs. Both were saved by transplanting in their permanent five gallon cloth pots. You will notice the stress in the very bottom leaves in the left picture, the photo taken directly over the plant.
Her root ball was dusted with Dr. Earth’s Premium Gold dry organic fertilizer. This fert also contains Myco and microbes, which is why I did this. I contacted Dr. Earth about doing this before I did it. Through a series of emails, I can see why the people who use these products love the company. They went above and beyond for me. They were the ones who suggested dusting the root ball, and I can see it has had a very positive effect.
Edit: A special thank you and shout out to Oscar from Dr. Earth Organics!
Transplant was on 12/18. She still seems to resemble an indica but Spliff reassured me during another awesome customer support email conversation that the Sativa resemblance happens during flower. I really have to say, 2 fantastic customer support issues!
Thanks, again, to Spiff I know I need to flower soon. Probably on Monday, 12/30. These are both Sativa heavy and I really don’t want to risk the head-space in the tent. I originally wanted to do some LST but I feel I need to grow these naturally and do some lollipopping. I don’t know why, call it “The Force.”
Edit: Began flowering light schedule today, 12/26.
Flowering actually began for her last week, but in the middle and I feel this can be safely counted as the first.
I have been tucking fan leaves to allow under branches to get more light so they can mature on their ride up with the stretch. I did have a little concern as the new growth from this was lighter green than the rest. I am sure it was just because they are growing so fast now, but to be safe I added some Epsom Salts for some magnesium and I added some molasses to the last watering, just to give the soil microbes and mycorrhizae some nutritional simple carbohydrates to activate them to start doing their thing and breaking down the nitrogen sources in the organic soil. The lighter green new growth has turned the regular shade of green now so I am not going to be stressing over it.
Being that this is all organic, I also applied a top dressing of Dr. Earth Flower Girl to get it started breaking down. Dr. Earth organic ferts are like crushed up, powdered materials. They need time to start decomposing and getting the nutes into the soil. Normally I wouldn’t have started flowering ferts this soon after the switch. Time will tell.
I have to say, Dr. Earth has really impressed me so far. I belong to a group on facebook that I have shared some pictures on and everyone is really impressed with how the plants look. These are the same people who are usually slamming others about their plants, as most groups do. I will keep top dressing every other week as they suggest and see how it goes. Of course, I will be reporting here as well!
One last thing: The humidity is inflated. I had just watered the day before and we have some dampness issues in the environment the tent is in. That issue has been addressed and obviously, the water is being used up by the plants.
Somehow, my weeks got messed up. This is only week 5. I am unsure how to fix this on the site.
This week has me experiencing a little girl who is growing into a teenager with a pretty severe drinking problem. The stretch is on but, for a Sativa, she is really behaving well. She is drinking almost as much water as I can throw at her.
The nutrients were a mixture. I added more top dressing of the Dr. Earth Flower Girl. I also topped her organic soil off to fill the cloth pot again. I have found that soil tends to settle pretty well in cloth pots, and this is something you should do to maintain moisture in the soil. I watered these in with a moderate solution of Alaskan fish emulsion for some quick nitrogen. She is still needing this nutrient and it is nice to be able to give it to her while the organic flowering nutrients are still breaking down.
Her early flowering buttons are staying amazingly tight. I posted two photos to demonstrate. It’s almost like looking at the start of a sunflower.
She has a tent-sister, a Spliff Seeds Amnesiac, who is really stretching good. I am hoping she levels off this week so they will at least stay somewhat the same height. I have read that the Jack F1 strain is a slowly blossoming plant, so I’m sure she will start catching up soon, providing her sister slows down.
Hopefully, by this time next week, I will have some better flower pictures and maybe even be able to start smelling her a little. Currently, she is smell free besides the minty cannabis scent from moving the leaves and branches.
This week has the flowering stretch slowing down considerably. Budlets are forming quite will. Amazingly copious under the main cola forming on the top. The polyploid bud is steadily getting larger. I am really interested to see what this will look like when mature. I have read differing things as far as potency and yield. I am guessing that this will be simply a larger, more dense cluster of flowers and the potency really won’t be effected.
This week is my off week for top dressing. I did water her in with Molasses and Epsom salts, simply to give her an organic boost of carbs and magnesium to help her along with flowering. I should say, I fed the soil these things for her roots.
Still no smell as of yet.
I did add an oscillating fan in for more air circulation this week. I feel this may have an effect on how much the terpenes can diffuse into the air. When she starts growing her trichomes, I am sure that will change.
It really is shocking me how fast she is growing and her health. Spliff Seeds has a really healthy genetic stock in house.
I’m also enjoying the knowledge that I am growing strains that have been created with old school genetics that have been carefully bred to produce an amazing plant like this. I am sure next week will be even more intense as far as growth goes.
This week started out fantastic. She is really packing weight on her flowers. Still not showing trichomes proficiently but, they are slowly making themselves known. It’s been amazing to see the bottom “crown” of flowers coming up from the middle of the plant. She is taking the shape of a bullseye, the main cola in the middle and masses of flowers growing in perfect rings around the rest of the plant. Very symmetrical. I can’t imagine what she would look like if left to grow outdoors without altering the light schedule so early. She would be a beast!
I am also a little concerned. The very top sets of leaves are starting to develop a few rusty spots on them, and the tips seem to be turning the same color. I honestly think its a little light burn. To be safe I raised the light to max and have only been using water in case she is burning a little. Spliff Seeds does recommend not over feeding this strain so I am not worried about cutting off additives for a while. Being that it is only happening on the very top of the plant really has me thinking light burn.
Otherwise, the rest of her looks amazing. A very healthy green and sturdy plant. I wish she wasn’t so heavy on the sativa side. I honestly would plant her outdoors this spring and watch what would happen. I live too far north for that however. Unfortunately.
According to Spliff, I should be roughly half way through flowering. I have also read that the strain is slow to blossom, so I feel the flowers should really bulk up and continue to get longer, at least the ones that are growing up in the circles.
See everyone next week!
These past few weeks have had me banging my head against the wall over this plant.
I have figured it out thankfully...
In the last week, I thought the light was burning her. It was strange because her tent-mate (Spliff Seeds Amnesiac) was doing fine. Amazing actually.
Then some leaves began clawing, only on the top of the plant. Tent-mate was going strong.
Decided this strain may be more sensitive to nutes (even though I’m using organics) so I pulled all nutes two weeks ago and only have been using water. Burning progressed.
So there I was, medicated and staring at her, as one does. Watching her leaves blow in the oscillating fan breeze. And then, like lightening, it hit me. Exactly where the fan was blowing on her was where she was burnt. The other plant was closest to the fan, and it was blowing right over her. Truthfully, I have never had a fan running. Knowing my luck, posting every week like this, I figured I better get one going to spare myself the embarrassment of mold. I googled “Wind Burned Cannabis,” and it was like I was looking at my plant on google, right down to the spots and clawing. Lesson learned!! I will be trying to find a smaller fan and even then probably not point it right at either one of them.
I shut the fan off five days ago, and there has been no further burning. I am confident I have got to the bottom of the issue, FINALLY!
I hope the yield hasn’t been hurt, and that I caught it in time. Some pistils are starting to turn a vibrant orange, and there is some frosting starting to happen. I am past the half way point but, I expect it to take the majority of the month (February) to really get the flowers plumped. I’m actually expecting the main cola to develop fine, but the fans and sugars will look pretty sad😔
The lower flowers are staying pretty small. These were the ones out of the wind, so I think it’s just genetics. It’s probably a side effect of flowering so early. Her lineage is meant to grow huge.
Hopefully the next update will have no more drama. The fan is off for now. I flirted with the idea of pointing it at a wall and just letting it produce some side breeze, but I’m a little gun shy. We will see!
It’s becoming obvious that the wind burned leaves are causing the plant to go into an early ripening mode. The yield will most likely be effected unfortunately.
She is smelling fantastic though. Hints of citrus and when smelled right off the plant without disturbing the flowers almost like peaches.
I included a pic of the bottom leaves to show they are in perfect health, just as more of a proof that it was indeed windburn. Ironically the lower flower branches are doing much better than the others. I also included a pic of one of her flowers along side the other plant in the tent that avoided the burning. It’s striking how different they look. I suppose this is obvious, since one has been highly stressed and the other is totally fine.
She is definitely not photogenic due to the ragged leaves but I’m leaving them on her. She has been through enough stress and I will just let them fall off naturally. Hopefully I will be able to selectively harvest her and the lower branches will make up for the loss a little bit.
Some leaves are starting to yellow now that she is aging. Pistils are ripening faster each day. She’s only about 42 days into flower so again, the yield will probably be effected.
I’m new to this platform. It seems like when you post a harvest that’s it. I cut her down last night but, don’t like ending it there. I will at least trim the sugars off and have it ready to be jarred before I end it! I don’t flush or do any dark period. If she’s ready, I chop her.
Let this be a lesson to those who stress their plants in flower, for good and bad.
I honestly thought some really bad things were going to happen but, in the end, all that happened was she matured really early. Pretty much shut down shop and started ripening. I did lose yield, that is without a doubt. To those who haven’t been following, I stressed her way too hard with a fan. Wind-burn would be the most accurate term.
I promised good news! I chopped her last night. Almost 24 hours ago. I sent these same posted pics to Spliff, just to share their magick with them. This was right after removing the fans so I could get these better pics. My fingers were literally sticking to the phone while I was typing. Did the stress create more potency? Obviously, she time will tell.
The polyploid: This branch was interesting. I had to harvest this branch only, a little early. It really ripened before the rest of the plant. As can be expected, the branch is much fuller than the rest. We all know how the flowers grow towards the light when we only have one. They are heavier on one side than the other... and drying to cure! This is the flower with a black background in my pics.
All in all, I would say this strain is very forgiving. She punished me for my abuse by flowering early and rapidly but, still left me with many viable flowers.
Her tent mate... Search my Amnesiac diary for that gluttonous pig! She is really enjoying the bed all to herself!
See you next entry. In the harvest section!
The yield was small, and it’s all my fault. I placed a fan a little too close to her and she basically was stressed and went immediately into flower. Her tent mate, a Spliff Seeds Amnesiac, is still flowering. She probably has two weeks left before she is finished. Jack F1 has a similar flowering time. This tells me how much I stunted her.
All that said, I do feel as if she takes stress in stride. There were no hermie issues, certainly no issues in potency.
The stress seems to have shortened yield, but increased potency. Obviously, this was an early sample before curing. This strain seems to runt out under stress but increase cannabinoid profile because of it. The ultimate of quality over quantity. I am not encouraging stressful environments though. If left to her own devices and genetics, this would have been the massive, flowering beast Spliff says she is. The effects description is more indica because I let her mature as much as possible before harvest to improve weight. She matured much more than I would have normally allowed. This has led to more of a body effect with more amber trichomes.
The effects are very long lasting. It is not creeper, it is felt almost immediately. They do not wear off fast, as in more modern strains. Obviously, there is a rush, but after that it keeps on ticking.
I am not a good judge on flavor. I switched to vaping many years ago, so I do not smoke. Smoke tastes like smoke to me. I am a good judge of smell though. My selections were as accurate as my nose is. I don’t work in the perfume industry either ha ha!
Just a second opinion on potency. She is heavy on Sativa. Made the mistake of smoking before bed. I really enjoyed the journey though the mind, but I recommend allowing more time for the cannabinoid profile to develop. Really speedy. And I liked it🤭
