Week 1 - and she’s off! She was soaked for 24 hours in tap water and then after another 24 in the paper towel she was ready for the rapid rooter. Nothing particularly special about the method here - hydro buckets with a recirculating drip nozzle for the first few weeks until she’s sizeable enough to work on straight DWC.
Background
Finally got the cabinet on empty and ready for the new grow. This cycle we’ll be running all hydro with 3 different strains. Finally managed to troubleshoot and stabilize the res. with the last plant so this will be the measuring stick run for truly jacking out the nute mixture (and hopefully the yield too). This one is from the folks at Humboldt and particularly interesting in terms of genetics. An indica dominant cross of Girl Scout Cookies and True OG. She should be a heavy hitter and expect we’ll mainline ‘er to full effect as best as possible. Can’t say enough about this seed co. - the last run of their 707 was phenomenal as an outdoor and is now a go-to sativa in the ever-expanding selection😉. Thanks as always for stopp’n in and check’n it out👊. She is not expected to disappoint👍.
Week 2 update - lookn good for the most part. A little droopy today but still push’n out those early fans. Roots r at the res. Now and the pump has been removed. Difference is now showing by about a week between hydro and coco mediums which is interesting - see photo. Now it’s all wait’n for the first topping👍.
Feb. 17 update - and this is always the nail biting part for our hydro grows; late week 2 after the first res. Change. The hydroguard and h2o2 are competing with each other for dominance and we really should’ve done away with one or the other to see results instead of re-creating the week+ gong show we had on the last run... they got shocked pretty good for a couple of days after the change but have since started visibly growing again. Only time will tell and if we can avoid another root rot disaster to the next change we should be ok.🤞🤞🤞

Week 3 update - now this is the kind of growth that I expected with a hydro setup. Why the results are markedly varied and different with the other 2 plants is anyone’s guess 🤷♂️. The difference over the last 7 days is remarkable. Only at the start of week 3 and we’re already topping ‘er for the mainline. The root mass is white as snow and she’s super happy. We’re doing away with the Hydroguard and sticking with the straight H202 on the next change. The 2 should be essentially cancelling each other out and I’m still not convinced on any specific reason for our root rot issues from the past. We’ll top up only the next few days while she’s Recovering. We’ve started the mainline and can’t wait to see what the next couple weeks brings with growth👍. All extremely well friends - I’m gonna smoke a fatty In ‘er honour tonight😎🤟
Feb. 22 - and yet another lesson has been learned, despite how stupid the cause is believed to be - light leaks from the cheap translucent airlines for the stones is why the other 2 have suffered while this one has flourished. Like a constant flashlight inside the res. Whereas the BLACK airline for the stones in this bucket is keeping everything nice and dark. As if I didn’t foresee or give this any thought when we bought the new air pump. Unbelievable and has cost this cycle another 3 weeks of veg. Not giving up and newly popped beans will follow On the other diaries. Apologies to anyone watching but the wait will be a little longer me thinks. On the flip side we should have a massive yield on this one if all goes to plan.
Feb. 24 update - first topping went very well and she’s back on the grow pushing out the 2 new mains. Should be starting some LST in short order to build out the mainline👍😎.

Week 4 update - the one thing I’m starting to hate about hydro is how humbling it can be. Start of last week the roots were white and everything was perfect. Fast forward just a couple days, a topping and res. Change - all of sudden the root mass is brown and I’m freak’n out because I accidentally used the hydroguard instead of the H202 as planned. Not sure why I changed anything at all at this point and I blame the weed😉. Either way, she’s still on the grow and advancing each day despite a double res. Change within 24 hours. I’ll get a shot of the roots later if possible but it doesn’t appear to be root rot and just nute staining🤞. Well see what happens but I can’t help but remain cautiously optimistic despite the constant challenge. Thanks for check’n er out and watching my dumbassedness unfold in real time.👊
Feb. 28 update - another look at the root mass in combination with the plant itself seems to suggest things are still good. Shit changes in real time with hydro I swear - but the roots look stained, not rotted, ph and ec are stable and the new growth is advancing noticeably every 12 hours.
So maybe I’m paranoid and we have no issue at all??? 🤷♂️.
Mar. 1 update - stoned diatribe #3 - roots are fine, ph/ec stable, growth is solid. Think the past week it’s taken for this girl to recover from the topping and stripping has thrown me for a bit of a loop. All’s still really good with this one - at worst maybe a little too high a nute dosage and some excess N (which I’ll be making a note of for future runs).

Week 5 update - we’re just gonna chalk up last week as an inevitable bout of extreme paranoia due to multiple failed attempts with dwc in the past. While it’s strange that this plant did just fine and the other 2 rotted right out, I got a little giddy when I pulled up the root ball today. Massive, healthy and twice as big as expected. After the first topping, She recovered and started rapidly growing again last week, only to be topped and pruned again at the start of this one. We’re sticking with a traditional mainline this time round - 8 mains instead of 10 to keep it a little cleaner and more organized. No worries about recovery time either as this one may be in veg. For 8+ weeks while the new seedlings catch up to er. All told, everything seems stable and she be primed to be a monsta!👍😎💪
Mar. 8 update - her stems have beefed up like mad and even newer growth is more difficult to tie back and manipulate. Spread out the mains a little more today and should be good to go for flower end of the week or so( pending maturity on the other plants in the box).
Thanks to for swing’n👊

Week 6 update - still smooth sailing. She’s ready to launch any time now and the root ball is massive. Might have to consider some root pruning in early flower given how limited space in the bucket is now. Some of her fan leaves got a little torched under a hot spot so moved the light up a touch to offset. We’re still adjusting and spreadigg NT out the mains but she doesn’t make it easy and the her branches firm up real quick. Estimating about a week before we launch flower assuming the other plant in the cab. will be ready. Alls good and flower show come’n up👍.
Mar. 15 update - in anticipation of the upcoming flip, we defo’d out the big fans and selectively trimmed out a few of the lower growth tips that have started to stretch up. I’m gett’n greedy again and couldn’t resist leaving 4 of em in place. Well see how well they develop and trim off if necessary during the stretch.

Week 7 update - we’re gonna run the flip to transition this week. While I’d like to give it another week for the neighbour plant to bush out a little more, I’m tired of waiting around and the root ball on this thing is massive. I don’t think we’re getting away from having to prune it as-is, so best not to waste any more time in veg. I expect one helluva bush outta this girl when alls said and done. Environment stable, roots nice and healthy and stem structure is mad solid👍😎. Her branches are now so strong they’re ripping the Velcro anchors off the lid😳 she’s have’n none of the veg. Training anymore I guess😂😎.
Mar 20 update - clipped out the larger fans today. Not much doing there, just enough defo to get er focusing on the stretch. I’ll prob. Tie down the 4 secondary branches we left in the middle just to keep things uniform. About time we got to flower👍

Week 8 update - still smooth sail’n as she works through the stretch. Her root ball is massive and easily filling half the buckets volume. We’re now topping off every day and she’s getting thirstier and thirstier. The mains have thickened out so much now that the ties won’t hold them in place. We stripped out some of the larger fan leaves in the middle to open er up some more and also snipped off a few growth tips here and there that won’t form a portion of the finished bud structure. Alls well folks - should be gett’n budlets in short order👍😎.

Week 9 update - oh dear... having waited that extra week or two so that we could get another on the grow and in flower at the same time has proven... interesting. This girl is now a massively mature cannabis plant👍. We had to chop ‘er out a little just to keep things airy in there. So much for keeping er tidy. She’s stretching like mad and while I do expect to see little budlets this week - she’s defo got some more reach in ‘er🤟. Added in some terpinator to the mix. This bitch gonna be huge peeps😳😎. Humboldt’s done it again! We’re lett’n er go a little😉. Can’t wait to see this one flower out!🤞🤟🤞🤟

Week 10 update - This thing is just awesome 😎. 17” of barely tameable awesome. Continuing to prune back just enough foliage each week so that the canopy is full but not constricted. steady as she goes. We’ll be upping the base flower nutes this week by a small margin. She gett’n topped off every day, almost twice a day. Other then that she’s practically on auto pilot until the chop. Loving the ease of dwc.
Woulda loved it even more if we had two others just like er. Few more weeks to go yet but she’s startn to get pretty😎👍. Alls terrific.

Week 11 update - 5th week since the flip and we’re still seeing vertical growth as she stacks on more budlets🤙. Again, just some light pruning to keep the canopy airy. No signs of burn. Probably gonna leave this as the top end of the nute sched. Until we start clawing it back in later stages. She’s got a root ball that has literally consumed 3/4 of the volume of the bucket. Can’t lift her out with one hand anymore and she gets wrapped around the hoses fierce💪🤟. No issues, smooth and easy like last week - just how we like it👍😎.

Week 12 update - startn week 6 of flower and she’s still bloody stretch’n on the vertical. Another 2.5” over last week and the buds are startn to stack up like mad🤙. The early frost is crazy crystals and they’re everywhere😎. Still coast’n, just some light pruning and no issues to report whatsoever. Alls lookn well till the bell y’all👍😎👊.

Week 13 update - 7th week of flower and she finally stopped stretch’n. Buds are packing on weight but at this point, final yield may not matter. The frost on this plant is thicker and more abundant than anything I’ve ever seen. Just insane😳🤙👌. She’s maturing quite nicely and we’ll see how much longer she runs for. I’m think’n like 2-3 weeks inclusive of a flush and we’ll be ready for chop. Probably the strongest plant I’ve grown under non-natural light👍. No change in nute sched. And we’ll keep it the same until we decide to flush I think. Topping off with the same nute mix hasn’t jumped ppms north of 900 so she seems to be getting and using everything she needs. Just a great grow all around. Fingers still crossed to the finish🤞. Hope everyone’s safe and healthy😎👊.
Update - noticed just the very slightest bit of tip burn o some of the newer growth so looks like we’re at the top end of her range for the mix ratio. Gonna start clawing it back next week with plain water top offs. She’s just gorgeous👍👌😎.

Week 14 update - week 8 of flower and still smooth sail’n. She’s in great health overall - just Hoping that she starts to bulk up a little more. Seem to be finding that the diesel crosses don’t yield quite as substantially as other strains and this one is looking to be a medium yielder given the extended veg. Time she’s seen. Man - she’s got it where it counts though - scary amount of frost and it just gets better and better every day👌😎👌. She’s starting to show signs of maturity now so we’ve moved to half strength top-offs just to ensure we keep the ppms under 1000. We’ll take ‘er to the end of this week and see where she’s at. Trich monitoring will now be in full affect yall🤟. We’re close now for sure😎😎😎.
May 11 update - starting to see some ever so slight yellowing on the tips of the sugar leaves. My guess is that she’s topped out and ready to start finishing up. We’ll change out the res. On half strength solution today and move to plain water top offs. Re-assess and flush once the trichs look ready👍. We are oh-so-close now🤙.

Week 15 update - coming into the 9th week of flower and she’s definitely starting to finish out now. Trichs are starting to round out nicely but still not quite there yet. We dropped out the nute mix by half just to ensure that we’re not actually running up on some late stage burn - some slight yellowing of the tips was noted last week. Could just be a sign of the finish.
She’s a straight up gorgeous plant. The yield isn’t likely to be quite what I hoped for but despite the size of em, the bud structure is amazing and still plentiful all the way through to the bottom. The wife calls ‘er “knuckles” due to the crazy thickness of her mains at each node👍😂😎. Full disclosure, I’m left to wonder if I could’ve pushed her harder - we’ve been well below the 1000ppm mark for the whole grow so I’m not sure if that ultimately translates to too light a mix/reduced yields. What I do know is that there has been no issue with her at all so, maybe we just have to accept that this is how she rolls??? Either way - alls well in the quarantine cell y’all🤟✌️. Sat safe everyone.

Week 16 update - 10th week of flower and like the energizer bunny, this girl just keeps on go’n👍. Trichs still haven’t coloured out fully yet so we continue to wait patiently until chop day. Over the last couple days she started to show some slight colouring in the leaves so we should only be mere days away now🤞. Harvest is fast approaching and she’s still lookn stellar and do’n great👌. Thanks for stickn around and hopefully next update is the chop and deets👊.

Week 17 update - well she had pretty much exactly 1 more week in ‘er and god damn has she coloured out nicely. The scent profile has been all earthy kush until this week and she’s now got a whiff of that cookies we were hoping for too👍😎👍. The bottom half of the plant is now colouring out nicely and she’s almost ripe for the pick’n. Trichs are pretty much spot on, been runn’n the flush about 3 days. Next post is the harvest deets peeps🤙. This plant is gonna be something special.😎😎😎

Medium:
Look, I love coco/soil, organic/synthetic just as much as anyone. I’ve never really hated on any particular method and each has its uses depending upon the environment. That being said.... hydro is likely to be the predominant indoor method for us going forward. It ticks all the boxes that the average hobby grower is looking for. Maintenance is generally pretty easy, while I’ve found myself monitoring ph and tds more frequently, I’m still only mixing nutes once a week instead of three. The hassle factor is crazy mitigated here: 1:. From a sustainability perspective, nute consumption is wayyyy down, saving more dolla bills y’all!
Added bonus is that veg. Growth rates are just insanely fast. Easily a 2 week savings in time pre-flower🤟😎😳.
It is a little bit of a tricky medium but once you dial in the ratios - smooth sail’n the whole grow. I can focus on training/maintenance instead of feeding🤟🤟.
If there’s a drawback to DWC it would be that I’d have concerns about leaving it for more than a couple days when she’s in full flower. They just drink so much that It’s a constant top off. All told, far and away the most effective and economical medium we’ve used😎.
Method 🎚️🎚️🎚️🎚️
Under this COB light system, the best method to date has definitely been a mainline. It’s got so much canopy penetration that we’re pulling down 16” long colas packed with well developed buds. The mainline training didn’t take long in DWC - roughly 4 weeks of veg. And she was ready for the flip. We only extended it a further 2 weeks to keep pace with another grow in the same space. Otherwise, I would’ve cut the veg. Time back to 4 weeks which would’ve made the behemoth of a root ball a little more manageable. We also iceballed the res. With frozen water bottles twice a day throughout the grow. Just to keep temps down and avoid any potential issues. Whether or not there’s a better, more efficient way to get these kinds of results remains to be seen. We’re still trying to strike that balance between faster veg. Times and maximized yields. If anything, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the hermie issue at the end had something to do with the root ball binding on itself due to size. The true culprit was an unanticipated light leak but still - The ball could’ve been 2/3 the size and likely have produced similar results🤷♂️. I’m giving the method a slim 4 because it was a great success but too long a veg.
Yield/Harvest🌴🌴🌴🌴
Regardless of the final number, we had hoped that the yield would’ve been bigger. She’s a beauty of a plant but didn’t really puff out as much as we were hoping for. At least not a mainline on a 6 week veg. At 5.125oz we’re obviously not complaining and the colours in late flower were some of the best ever seen😎👌😎👌. What she did yield was frosty, dense and surprisingly stinky AF. I see no discernible difference in the quality of the terp. Profile vs. Any of our previous organic soil grows. For those who tout this as an advantage in soil media, I say get urself a bucket and a bubbler, then we’ll talk. Hydro is just straight up awesome: 1:. 4 palm trees on the yield - any haul north of 5oz is a great addition to the cellar: 1:😎: 1:😎.
Props - many thanks as always to the gd folks who made the platform available for us all. Big pound to all those at the boof party. Got a bunch of outdoor and couple clones to tend to now. Hopefully be see’n all you peeps around. Thanks for stopp’n in👊.
