TheBudWhisperer Week 1 (redux) - well the first girl of this strain shit the bed due to light leaks... again. We used the shitty translucent air hose that came with the new air pump and might as well have installed a small flashlight inside the res. π Roots completely rotted out.
New bean into the rooter today and weβll try this yet again. The margin for error with hydro is pretty slim, especially for this dumbass potheadπππ€.
Feb. 27 update - well sheβs up and rollβn... again. Gonna give er another go and see what happens. If the roots rot out again then weβre not escaping the higher temps issue and will have to try a cooler or something as a res. π€π€π€
Mar. 3 update - roots not yet at the res. But all factors accounted for. Stable ph/ec, no light leaks, frozen water bottles to mitigate temps. Sheβs on the grow solid now. Well take it another 5-7 days before the first res. Change just to let βer be for now. Alls still good so farπ€

Back with yet another from the folks at Spliff Seedsππ! What can I say, the beans are proven and what better qualifier than this strain. Sheβs a cross of Super Skunk and White Widow - Just a perfect mix of yield and strength if all goes to plan. Good for pain issues and nausea but what weβre shooting for on this grow is robust growth, high THC, a massive body stone and some trophy budsππ. TheBudWhisperer Week 2 update - it seems that weeks 2/3 are the defining, nail-biting moments when it comes to my hydro grows. After she shit the bed on the first go, weβve now addressed and/or rectified every conceivable thing that could go wrong:
Light leaks - covered every damn source I could find/think of including silicone covers for the hydroton rocks and net pots themselves.
Nute mix - cut out the hydroguard completely. Weβre gonna try to run a clean room style res. With H202 instead. Seems to be working for the sapphire scout so if it ainβt broke....
Temps - this is really the only factor that could be an issue. Been keepβn temps down with frozen water bottles twice a day. It wasnβt required in later stages on the last successful hydro grow and is just for the sake of eliminating all potential limiting factors.
Either way - if she shits the bed with root rot again then weβll have to look at utilizing a cooler or something for a res. Just to keep the solution that much colder. There would be no other potential reason for our issues to date.
Now we hold our breath for the first res. Change and pray that we finally have this system dialed in. Thanks for taggβn along.πππ
Mar. 6 update - right on sched. And the roots have started to pop out of the net pot. Should hit the res in the next 12 hours or so.
Mar. 9 update - alls lookn great and growth is advancing strongly. Sheβs lookβn a little pale right now and that should rectify itself when we up the nute mix slightly on the first res. Change. Weβre likely gonna FIM this one to cut down on recovery time as well be launching this one into flower as soon as sheβs mature enough to keep pace with the sapphire scout thatβs already primed for some buds.π

TheBudWhisperer Week 3 update - we are officially 24 hours through the first res. Change and Iβm happy to say sheβs responded very well. this is always where my plants shit the bed but this one is lookn like my best yetπ€. Roots are developing very well and she was juuust ready for a FIM. Weβve lost the blueberry seedling which was essentially DOA (thankfully not system related) and now itβs about catching up to the sapphire scout. Weβll leave er about a week to recover from the FIM and then launch off for flower if all goes wellπ Uppβd the nute mix slightly as she was lookβn a tad pale. Alls good and updates will follow as she recovers this week.
Mar. 13 update - and wouldnβt you know it.... spotted a little bit of brown gunk o one of the roots this morning while doing the ice pack changeπ€¬. I know that bs when I see it by now. This time, I delicately cleaned it off and spiked the solution with a direct hit of another 5ml H2O2 in the hopes that it can counteract any further pythium buildup. Itβs gotta be the temps. Thatβs the only thing that makes sense by now. Well see how she fares and keep a close watch over the weekend.
Mar. 14 - no more brown gunk. Probably not root rot and Iβm just high and paranoid again. Things are lookβn good. Bent over the stem today to start the branching foundation. Itβs amazing what such a small adjustment like this does to the plants development - especially after a FIM. In a few weeks weβll have a mass of mains pumpn out some bad ass budsππ. Weβll be moveβn pretty quick from here on out people. Should be a good test of min. Veg. Time in hydro. Stay tuned and as always - πππ

TheBudWhisperer Week 4 update - well impatience got the best of us and weβre not waiting any longer to launch flower. It wouldβve been preferable to give this girl another week to veg. But her neighbour ainβt waiting for er anymoreπ. Sheβs juuuuust barely shown signs of a full recovery from the FIM and while weβre still waiting to see how many mains weβll pull out of it, the effect on the side branches is already very noticeable. Regardless of number of mains, I consider a FIM successful when the stem starts swelling to the side branches like this (see stem photo). Crazy that only 3 weeks ago she was no more than a seedling and this shows just how fast you can get a plant growing to maturity in a hydro applicationπ. Despite what the book says, weβre holding on switching to bloom nutes and uppβd the grow nute dosage a little to give er that extra push through this 1st week of stretch. The root mass is incredible for 3 weeks - probably better than the sapphire scouts even at this stage. No rot, no light leaks, just a bit of nute staining and new growth every hour it seems. Canβt wait to see the mature bud structure on this strain - itβs gonna be awesomeππ€π€.

TheBudWhisperer Week 5 update - through the first week of the flip and sheβs now starting to show signs of moving into transitional veg. No major issues have cropped up and all the readings - ph, tds etc. Are showing stable. Iβm again having difficulty trusting that the browning of the roots isnβt root rot, but all signs point to a healthy plant (albeit, one thatβs had its limits pushed in terms of stress and growth timelines). Probably just being fickle (and stoned) here - the roots have tripled in size and sheβs definitely still growing healthy up top and we havenβt had any ph spikes that would indicate a contaminated res. We pruned out the larger fan leaves and now that the side branching has some legs, we lstβd most of em out towards the rim. This should spread things out somewhat as we move through the stretch. Uppβd the H202 concentration by 25% as a precaution. Also moved over to bloom base nutes on the last res. Change but dropped the concentration a touch as she was showing some very slight nute burn on her tips. Thanks as always for checkn er out - the fun part is about to beginπππ.

TheBudWhisperer Week 6 update - coming into week 3 of the stretch and I must admit, massive changes over the last week. It was hard to be positive given what Iβve put this poor plant through... if youβve been following along, she wasnβt lookn so good a couple weeks ago and I still proceeded to put er through a fim and trim... all within 3 weeks of veg. Again, this is mostly for the sake of the neighbour plant which is a god damn beast, but whateves. This girls been Randy as hell though since she entered the stretch. Sheβll definitely be squat but I expect very big things regardless. Root ball has again doubled in size and sheβs loving the nute adjustment to slightly lower levels. Weβve bumped it this week and also added in Terpinator for a flowering boost. Against our better judgement we did prune back a little more at the start of the week to allow for max exposure. So far, a good decision it was - hehehe (que Star Wars/yoda reference). My thoughts go out to everyone trying to keep it sane right now. This BS virus has everyone shook but we will prevail eventuallyπ. Stay chill and blaze a fatty yβall. First world problems are always a good thing to have when so many others are suffering out there - remember thatππ.

TheBudWhisperer Week 7 update - 4th week of flower and sheβs really stsrtβn to blow out nowπ. The leaves were all mottled together as each branch fought for its territory. We tied er down again and did some selective pruning to keep things airy. Sheβs responded incredibly well and has been praying to the light ever sinceπ. No change to the nute sched. For now - well look to up the base flower mix another 5ml next week. Sheβll probably stretch a little more but first budlets def. starting to show. Alls still good below the hood - heavy nute staining north of the water line but nice n white otherwise. Thanks for checkn er outπ.

TheBudWhisperer Week 8 update - 5th week of flower and canβt be happier under these circumstances. It was always the hope that this one wouldβve had the same amount of veg. Time as itβs neighbour but she shit the bed in her first 2 weeks and we had only just enough time to get another seed on the grow before it would be too late. Pretty amazing that this is a photo strain on only a 3 week veg. With a FIM thrown in to the mixπ³. Sheβs taken the abuse and accelerated schedule like a champ. The root ball has really filled out and sheβs still stretching north as she adds budlets at the same time. Weβve now run out of KIND Base so weβre supplementing with calmag instead. Not a major change and hopefully no ill effects from itπ€. I canβt wait to see this thing in full flower - spliffs photos of er are just delicious. All is still extremely well in here yβall. Letβs hope we can keep it together until the finishππ€π.

TheBudWhisperer Week 11 update - coming in to week 8 of flower and sheβs still got a bunch more work leftπ. Vertical growth has finally tapered off and sheβs done a good job bulking out at the same time. The colas are rounding into what will be massive bud formations when sheβs doneππ€π. She continues to drink about a litre or two each day and at this point itβs safe to say that sheβll likely outweigh the mainline sapphire next to βer π³. Iβm just amazed at how well this plant has done on a 3 week veg. Top notch genetics IMOπ.
Alls good in da hood folks - weβll be watching Close for the finish but I do expect another 2 weeks at least. Thanks for swingβn in as alwaysπ.

TheBudWhisperer Week 12 update - we knew it was coming eventually with this plant. She had all the signs of a girl workβn on some fat buds. The last week has really seen βer bulk out and the all white hairs are starting to turnover as well. Sheβs still got some work to do for sure but we did claw back the calmag by half. Saw just the very slightest bit of yellow on the tips - might not even be burn but no sense in pluggβn the calmag further at this point. Just unreal buds on this thing - thereβs buds inside the buds that have buds inside them.... I know, trippy eh? Still waitβn on more signs of maturity but we expect big things this week.π
Hope everyoneβs stayβn safeβοΈ

TheBudWhisperer Week 14 update - 10th week of flower and sheβs turned over perfectly with tons of those burnt hairs now showing largeπ. The smell is insane - sweet, gassy, almost fruity and def. stinky. The buds are dense as hell tooπ. Weβre not far off now but trich check suggests weβve still got some more time before the chop. Prob. Not more than another week or so. Stay tuned, these buds are massive and itβs gonna be an awesome weigh-in.πππ

Spliff does it again!π - helluva grow for sure. This one was surprising in a lot of ways actually. Scent profile was amazing once she hit full flower, buds were dense and packed with resin. And she grew - like a bowssss! The widow in er was obvious from the start for sure. We did have a late reveg on er - looks like a light leak mightβve stressed out in the last few days. All told - no damage to the harvest and we def. got max value on this beast fo shoππππͺ.
The overall on the grow is definitely at least 8/10. Waiting on the full cure to re-evaluate my ratingπ€.
Taste & Smell: ππππ
Effects: πππ
You can definitely give this one an A+ for scent profile. Totally true to the description too - fruity, gassy and strong. Put the carbon filter to test. Canβt wait to see the profile round out on the cure. She already smokes real buttery and smooth, as-is, right now. Higher marks here for sure.
Effects are at a middling rating until sheβs rounded out a little better. Definitely indica leaning but wouldnβt say itβll blow away the experienced stoner. More testing required here....

TheBudWhisperer Medium:
Look, I love coco/soil, organic/synthetic just as much as anyone. Iβve never really hated on any particular method and each has its uses depending upon the environment. That being said.... hydro is likely to be the predominant indoor method for us going forward. It ticks all the boxes that the average hobby grower is looking for. Maintenance is generally pretty easy, while Iβve found myself monitoring ph and tds more frequently, Iβm still only mixing nutes once a week instead of three. The hassle factor is crazy mitigated hereπ. From a sustainability perspective, nute consumption is wayyyy down, saving more dolla bills yβall!
Added bonus is that veg. Growth rates are just insanely fast. From the moment she popped her head out to the start of week 4, this girl was fimmed, pruned, trained and flipped. She put out a full oz. more than the 6 week(v) mainline beside erπ³. Now that is just straight amazingπ. The key advantages - BIG F$&KβN YIELDS and auto pilot care for up to 2 weeks.
It is a little bit of a tricky medium but once you dial in the ratios - smooth sailβn the whole grow. I can focus on training/maintenance instead of feedingπ€π€.
If thereβs a drawback to DWC it would be that Iβd have concerns about leaving it for more than a couple days when sheβs in full flower. They just drink so much that Itβs a constant top off. All told, far and away the most effective and economical medium weβve usedπ.
Method ποΈποΈποΈποΈποΈ
Under this COB light system, the best method to date has definitely been a mainline. Itβs got so much canopy penetration that weβre pulling down 16β long colas packed with well developed buds. Hereβs where strain, medium and method kinda collide though. This girl was on a hurry up and go schedule. We lost the first one to root rot and had to get this one off the ground and mature before the cycle sched. Was gonna flip. Not to mention it was totally screwing with our spring nursery timing too. She was fimmed once and then splayed with LST. Not much either - just enough to get er spread apart a little. So you combine ultra fast growth rates of hydro with a big yield strain like this on a fast paced training method that limits required recovery times... and you get this monster. Just a perfect grow that anyone would be extremely happy with.
We used frozen water bottles In the res. twice a day throughout the grow. My issues with light leaks and temps are well documented and Iβm constantly running up against one or the other as a hurdle. This plant was no different and she started to re-veg. In the last few days prior to chop. All due to a light leak from the cabinet beside this one that was running on an 18/6. Gonna have to plug some light holes prior to next grow. Other than that - she was amazing and the method here is getting an unusually high and very rare 5/5.π³
Yield/Harvestπ΄π΄π΄π΄
The final number is just so sweet. 6.04oz and she vegβd less than a month. Overall, I could confidently say thatβs both faster and better than most typical autos in generalπ³πππ. Any time your rockβn out 5+oz is a good haul but in this kinda time frame - thatβs just crazy. We let her go just a little longer (again, as per Spliffβs direction) and it was worth the extra patience. Sheβs dense as all hell and a nice add to the stashπ€.
Thanks as always for stickn around and watchn this one unfold. Sorry the update was so late but itβs been busier than expected. Even in the middle of COVID bullshit. Hope everyone remains safe and healthy. PEACE!βοΈ
I'm loving spliff seeds at the moment!! Got more autos on route and some purple berry kush fems. I cant wait to see the outcome. Your plants are looking AMAZING by the way !! π π β π₯ π
@mr_h_kovert, lets just hope she recovers quick. My other hydro run is getting outta control and I gotta flip this cab over to 12/12 sooner rather than later π€ . Hopes alls well bud!
Maybe white silicone covers could help as well? I've seen some white covers on other people's DWC setups, because I guess the white helps reflect off some of the light/heat. Darker colors suck up a lot of light, especially black, but at least the red isn't as dark as the black.
@DoctorPhilgood, yeah I looked at stock covers but couldnβt find any for my size of net pot. This is my workaround. Iβm not so concerned with heat dissipation or colour as the res. Itself is all black. My issues are consistently root rot due to light leaks as far as I can tell so Iβm eliminating that possibility altogether. Iβll know if the issue is temps in about 1-2 weeks I think π¬ π€ π¬
@ShotGunBob, gonna day about on the light side of perfect. She started to re-veg in the end so I wasnβt gonna press my luck but Iβd say 20% amber at the high, 10% at the low and clear/glassy on the larf as expected. That help???

Nice....looking good....I like having my tents open except photo's lights out.....F.Y.I. my issue I thought was iron....doesnt matter....my tops on the ones I was trying to keep from getting to the same place....WOW....they are blowing up like a cactus top....and getting WIDE...like flat and wide...maybe quarter size on the youngest one....MORPHEOUS the self topper.....the one I had given ph water only not the CYCO dr repair that contains iron along with their other micros......
I used Fulvic Humic acids Cal....Mag....Sul....Carbonator....Zyme....and a heavy PK........also a carb and micron builder........
But thats the 330ppm TEA....my 260 in between feeding is just 5ml/g of DEMETERS DESTINY CALCUUM.....and MAGNUM mag sulfur.....its like hot tap water after I add it to my RO water.....
THEY ARE LOVING IT.....I figured something out......what I'm not totally sure...but I fucked it up perfectly.....
