At my friend's house he has seeds that he got in Mexico from a giant operation. He said he just wanted to buy some green while on vacation down south, and the guy he met took him to where they grow and showed him the plants. No idea how big the space was but he said huge. They gave him a baggie of seed to grow, and he found some seed in the bud which he said he didn't keep. Hoping he didn't bring home schwaggy Hermie bag seed and instead find something worth keeping.
Extremely variable and mixed genetics means this will be a fun little project.
He had 11 seeds and wanted more, so every time I go over to his place and checking up on the plants and keeping a log. We will be selectively breeding these 11 plants, sativa to sativa, Indica to indica, that kind of thing. The goal is to just produce more seed, but not so randomly that we have no idea what it is; it'll be nice to know whether it's a sativa or indica dominant growth style. There will be no bud produced from this grow diary, just pollen and seed.
Seeds were labelled with the ID MEXxx where the last two digits are number based on how fast they germinated, 01 germinated the fastest and had the longest taproot whereas 11 took an extra day.
Stick around maybe I'll put some observations keep you all informed.
Starting to see their reactions to the environment. Most of them are pretty picky about the humidity with the wrinkled leaves, but it's no big issue and they seem to be growing through it just fine.
some have skinnier leaves, and some have wider leaves, some are shorter, and some are taller; you can already see the differences between the indica and sativa growth traits.
Did a stem rub today, d12, not all smell, but if they do it's smell pretty basic except mex04 that smells like rubber or gas. Super exciting as this is what we're breeding for, the special ones.
Mex10 has good fast branching. Maybe one cross will be 04 x 10 to mix the indica with the branchy sativa. Already getting excited with the possibilities.
These are growing incredibly fast. Day 16 and it almost look like some of them have caught up to the ones I have back home. I can't believe it. Some are smaller and some have curled leaves. likely because we live in a very dry climate and his basement is 20%
D22: some are growing very fast, some are twisted. #4 and #5 smell rubbery and gassy with a stem rub. A few just smell woody and plain. Most are standard fruity/hempy.
I think the males will show sex this week, I see a few small growths in the nodes of the biggest.
D24: transplanted, ready to switch to flower soon. Some have lots of branches, some have none, some have nice thick roots, some have thin roots. Earthy smells, skunky smells, woody smells a little bit of gas. One one had shown sex so far, and it was the first male. Paired them up in pots due to limited number of pots. Doesn't really matter as they'll be in flower soon.
D27: first month almost over, half are showing sex. 2 males and the rest female so far which is great. Some of the preflowers are very tiny on leafy plants so I fear some will have a crazy leaf to calyx ratio.
D28: will be going into flowering tomorrow. Two or three confirmed males, a bunch of confirmed females. Still amazed at the phenos present. All so different. Indica, sativa, branchy, and not. Some with some neat characteristics of colouring already.
Some are showing signs of nitrogen tox with the claw which is interesting because they're all in the same living soil, getting nothing but water. Shows how some are hungry and already consuming lower leaves while others are already at their tolerance level. You can see that little fella in front all droopy and dark green which I think is just a sensitive plant.
D31: first full day of flower. Killed Mex08 as there were a few males, and this one was just not interesting. Some are very sativa and slow flowering, still don't know the sex of a few of them. Might kill the Wilty number 4 as it's just bad.
#6 vs #10 have very similar traits so I will choose one of those males to keep based on the flowering speed, flower size and structure.
Same with #7 vs #11.
I'll have three total male pollen collections, and four nice females to use them on meaning it will be very easy to make the 12 crosses. I also brought over the small twin to mix with a strong male.
I also took clones of the four females and one sativa that is very slow to show as I don't want to have to take a cutting in flower. May keep them and grow them to try the smoke in each and/or keep a cutting for backcrossing to bring out the diesel smell.
D34: #11 made my decision easy, I figured it was a male but also had female flowers after three days of flower. Don't need those straight herm genetics so I chopped it out.
D35: pulled number 11 as it was a straight up Hermie with balls first then flowers after the switch to 12/12. Don't need those dioecious genes floating around.
Others growing nicely, still no gender from the very sativa plant. I'm excited for that one to be completely honest, a full blown sativa would be fantastic.
D38: removed the dark green shriveled one. Down three now.
D42: everytime I go over to check on these plants they look so much bigger!
Got some nice nuts on the three chosen males, one is a little slower so I didn't take a pic of it. They're growing so fast.
You can see the differences in sativa and indica traits in the tent.
D45: STRETCH CITY. In one day those two sativas grew an inch and a half to touch the light. Look at the differences between d44 and d45. Pollen sacks should open very soon. Very happy with the male. Lots of flowers, nice and big flowers with a good leaf to flower ratio, nice stretch, very good sativa traits.
The second male has very tiny flowers but lots of them. And the final male is a short heavily bushing plant with a high leaf to flower ratio. Some of the females don't look happy anymore, I think it's the ones with limited root space.
D46: the first balls open! Still need to get paper bags so I guess I'll have to grab some after work today. Gonna wrap this whole plant up.
D48: the sativa male is taller then the light again, but I'm not moving the light just for it lol.
The indica male looks like it's almost ready to open up some flowers.
Cut the third male I was keeping. It was a straight monoecieous plant. Got balls first, thought he'd be a nice bushy pheno of a male, but yesterday showed lots of hairs. Boy then girls, reverse of the usual Herms.
D49: pulled that Hermie yesterday, two of the girls in smaller pots are complaining about lack of root space.
Down to two, non-herm boys which are all bagged up. I ended up trimming off the side branches so I could bag the main cola and not have to worry about too much stray pollen. Not that I think it matters too much, A week with the sativa balls open probably pollinated some of the female flowers. Which is fine because really the sativa pollen is the only one I care about.
D54: pulled the males, collected the pollen. Waiting on the seed now :)
D56: they're all in full flower. The sativa in them is making them slower and stretcher which is alright to me.
Back right plant has a beautiful structure, nice main cola and even side branches. It reminds me of some good strains I've grown in the past so this might be a very nice sativa hybrid.
Front right had the hungriest, thickest roots before transplanting and now it's showing deficiency because it's hungry again. It's the tallest and stretchiest female plant I've ever seen(the male in the corner was stretchier).
The other two are slower like a sativa but shorter and sider like an indica. Seeds 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 are the only ones left from 11. Exactly half were male or herm.
D65: flowering nicely. Pollinated flowers probably have 3 weeks to be finished, much less for the earliest seeds. The shells are already formed but still soft, and white or green.
The tallest plant has the biggest bud, surprising because it was pollinated first and usually sativas have more airy, smaller buds. I'm really happy with all the plants, but especially this one. Mex 09 is my fav.
The breeder seed is much more resinous than the others, obviously. It's hard to see the flowers swell and see the seeds inside.
Just formulating ideas to grow the breeder offspring and look for males to pollinate my favourite sativa female. Or vice versa. Not sure yet, but there's lots of possibilities with such mixed seed.
Seeds are real close to being done, earliest pollinated buds are now finished and I'm going to leave it for another week or week and a half to let everything finish up
D77: they're fading quite nicely. Noticing only two of the five actually have a smell, kinda like skunk and cat piss. The other three are woody or hempy and I'm hoping the seeds they produce have better Terps. I think they're pretty much done, I'll cut them down at the end of this week, let them dry, and mash them out to sift out the seed. I'll put all the plant material into jars and decarb it for edibles.
D97: been two weeks since the last update, harvest tonight or tomorrow night. They've been ripening up. It's been really cold at night the last week and the windows have been open so the grow room is kind of cold at night. The plants got some nice colour and a little bit of frost as a response. Had a seed germinate in the pot, a true weed. Also pulled one sex last week for a germination test and it sprouted in two days. Very fast, nice wide leaves. Won't be growing them out, just wanted to test germination.
Took three months exactly, got all the seeds done now. Kind of interesting how they all look a little different some seeds really big, some are small, some are grays, some are black. took me like 6 hours to manually separate all the seeds from the bud because I don't have any way to sift them.
