I have finally caught this diary up to my current progress. Week 1-4 was a backlog of data, everything I post now will be current as posted. I welcome any comments or suggestions. I'll keep posting lots of pictures until someone tells me to knock it off, prob 2-3 individual plant pictures and a couple group shots of each day. I also plan now to add notes of the changes I make to the grow.
1-1-2018:
I have been configuring the intake/exhaust for my sealed hood. Pulling air from the room with the ballast at 600W and 750W worked great as the outside temps are in the teens and single F degrees. When I switched to the 1000W setting I overloaded the capacity of the room to cool the light and was getting low 80's. I decided to pull in air directly from outside (5F @ low RH) to cool the lamp and fixture. Other than some condensation and frost on the ducting it's worked great so far, the fixture is cool to the touch and the glass is cool enough to place a hand on it. All 6 plants seem to want higher temps and lower humidity, when I keep the temps around 80 and humidity below 50% they are significantly perkier and show more vigorous growth.
1-2-2018:
Watered the garden yesterday evening, each plant got watered to runoff. I'll post daily group shot photo's, unless something exciting happens I wont post daily individual plant photos. Plants recovered from the watering around 4-5 hr after watering, lights on. I'm seeing that after topping each plant, by way of plucking off the very top/last node as it formed, that all the growth is being distributed from the bottom up. What I mean by that is the lower nodal growth is stretching up and meeting the uppers, so that it's naturally forming an even canopy.
1-3-2018:
Decided to vent my exhaust outside the building my grow tent is in. As the weather warms up venting the exhaust inside wont work at all, only option is to remove the variable of changing weather as a factor. Space heaters are running more now, but temperatures are more stable without all the excessive tweaking to fan speeds and such. Most of the plants are getting close to having the lower growth match the upper growth in height and hope to see some growth in overall height.

Picture Update
1-6-2018:
Just another Picture update. Getting pretty bushy, limited vertical growth but very aggressive growth of lower branches. going to veg another week or two, will modify light schedule to 16/8 next week, followed by either 14/10 or 24-48 hr dark period followed by 12/12. The leaf damage seen in the pictures from Day 35 is from my aggressive, block handed topping job, only wanted to pluck off the very top node , and that involved prying apart the second to top nodes pushing out.
Wish my issue had a category lol. All my buds have been seeded to some extent and therefore will effect how the buds ripen. I want to know how much seeding alters my harvest timeline, and can I still look at trich's for bud ripeness as the pistils are orange with clear trich's.
Your buds will take a little longer and I think it gives a distinct change in taste, but maybe that is just me. Obviously the THC content will be lower. It kinda depends how much it got pollinated too, like was it pollinated by a rogue male growing a mile away or a male a foot away. Good luck anyway. I'll follow see how you get on. Peace
man thats a very nice collection of dense buds you have there
once you start some feminized seeds, some clones, or use a bag to sex you will be good to go; your setup is working very well
@Jaindoh, I'd love to eventually do some homebrew seeding, for now these seeds will have super unstable parents, might keep em to do some free range outdoor growing. Next grow will be Nirvana genetics that I might keep any male pollen.
Appreciate the compliment on the setup, it's a work in progress 👍
Sounds interesting here.
Blasting young plants with a 1000w light is not really the best thing to do. You shall wait a bit more.
You might need to ScrOG your plants to fill up all the light coverage with 6 plants , technically you’re gonna grow 166,66W plants (I’m growing 100W plants if it can help to get an idea).
Personally, I think that 1000W light is way too much for this size of tent.
It’s gonna be tough to fit 6 monsters inside your tent bro , to get 1gr./W.
You shall Veg at 400W and Bloom at 600W. 6 100W plants will be more reasonable for this size of tent . And you be able to reech those 1gr./W more easier.
@JUNGLE_B4RNS, Luckily for me I don't have to grow in my house or garage. it's a pretty well insulated little building. It really surprised me how much more heat 1000w puts out vs 600W. Might just be an indicator of how inefficient my grow light ballast/lamp setup is haha. I have a wall mounted radiant heater that heats the room no problem, but being my first grow I wanted to see what dealing with 1000W in a 4x4 would look like. I think as it gets warmer out i'll have to dim down to 750W or 600W to deal with the heat. Intake temp of my fixture is 15F exhaust vent is pushing out 72F air.
@JUNGLE_B4RNS,
It's getting into the single digit F where I live and that means either I turn the light up or use more heaters haha. I appreciate the advice 👍
@PigBearMan, I'll start my hand exercises now! Im really focusing on just letting these things go, so far they've had no complaints, just watering with weak nutrients every 2/3 waterings.
@bobo420, thank you! judging by the stem swing (I grab the stem lower down and gently swing the top back and forth and have been doing it since start of flower) the tops are getting decently heavy.
We are almost using the same set up. The nutrients and the light wattage. I think things are looking great!!! My lights keep the temp in the tent perfect for them. Cant wait to see your end result!
@TheMachinist, Yes! I absolutely love my High Pressure Sodium light. I started the grow with a LED light from amazon and was not impressed at all. So i got a new 1000 watt HPS bulb for my girls and they exploded in growth. I honestly dont think you can give them too much light.. You can deff burn them and get them too close to the light. However you have to listen to your plants and see what they say. I might considering getting a metal halide bulb for the veg period but the high pressure sodium has impressed me on so many levels. I actually hang my HPS pretty low for the majority of the grow just in my last few weeks of flowering i lifted her to the highest position. I also run a T5 along side her for the smaller girls i start. I do a staggered grow so i have girls at all stages at all times.
@wheedtobeus420, Thank you very much! Do you plan on vegging next time with the HID? If you can afford the power, I recommend using HID lights for veg, I have nothing to compare to personally, but just by looking at journals on GD here I would say the HID in veg was a big help. It seems silly to have such small plants and such high amounts of lights, but I would rather give too much than too little, by keeping the light high up in the tent I let the plants grow to the light and I think it worked out well.
@Ripper, Thanks! These pictures were take under the HPS, but taken in RAW with a canon T5i, then edit in photoshotp. I try to get as close to real life as possible, they are actually darker green than shown, but its as close as possible.
