Planted the seeds on 11/12/17 straight into coco+perlite mixture (coco from a brick) - sprouted in three days. These are 16 days from seed and I'm worried they're a little small. I'm growing in pretty controlled conditions, got passive intake and an extractor fan - ambient temps dont exceed 30°C in the grow room. 300W CFL hanging about 5 inch from the top of the tent. I water every 2 days with 1L of nutrient ph 6.5 water, containing canna A and canna B (1ml/L). The smaller plant (the Runt) popped a day later and seems to have yellowing on its leaves -
not sure why that is but any tips or comments would be appreciated! (:
UPDATE: 31/12/17 - Day 20
The plants have definitely increased their rate of growth, seen new leaves come out over the course of 24 hrs or so. Made a change in lighting from 24/0 to 18/6 and i think that's made a decent change. I'm struggling to keep the temps in my grow room down, they get up to 34-35 when the light is on and then down to like 25 when its off. know how i could keep the temps down? im growing in a closet so ventinf outside just isnt an option. I have an outake and and an intake fan although both of them arent extremely powerful due to restrictions on grow conditions. Also thinking of repotting from 1gal to 8L? initial plan was to have 3 autos in 1gal root nurse bags but the third didnt pop, would increasing the bag size have any worthwhile impact on the yield?
the runt suffering from some nute burn at day 20, gonna halve the feed not sure if i even need any right now probably do because im growing in coco coir as compared to soil
01/01/2018 - Day 21
I have taken the start of a new week and the new year to make some changes to growing conditions:
- in week 2, the nutrient water i was watering with was made up to a pH of 6.5 however this didnt reflect the pH of the coco coir as the runoff tested at 7.0 which is why i watered early last night (to flush excess alkaline buildup in the growth medium his week, using pH 5 water to water them
- dropped the height of the plants and lamp to 3 inches instead of five, to force them to grow bushy and short
- the light-on tent temps are starting to hit 32-33°C which im worried may cause some stunting due to heat stress, any solutions for closet growers?
- changed the position of the fans for venting; the extractor at the top above the lamp and the intake at plant-level.
just need to monitor effects of feeding and introducing cal-mag supplements on the extent of growth
04/01/18 - Day 24
Spent some spare time adjusting the pH of the growth medium because the run off was reading 7.2 pH which indicated a problem in the coco, flushed both plants with approximately pH 5 water until a run off of 5.75 was achieved to get approximately a 6.5 pH in the growth medium. used approximately 7.5L of the pH 5 water to flush and then fed them by hand. of course, this will lead to droopy leaves and some problems in the next few days but better i fixed the problem now rather than a month from now when it'll be an even bigger one. can expect some yellowing and curling, got some calmag coming tomorrow which should fix any problems
06/01/18 - Day 26
some major growth in the past few days, new nodes appearing and the plants are showing 3mm of growth overnight so possibly close to a half a cm per day. I've read this strain (and a lot of autos in general) tend to have a growth spurt around the 4th week which is what the girls are coming up to in the following days so fingers crossed we see some vertical growth over the next 3-4 days. ive been keeping the light like 2.5inches from the plants, seems to be doing pretty well but far might pull it further away to get them to stretch? limited on vertical height (50x50x100) so might be a better idea to keep em short - any tips would be appreciated.
One of the fan leaves on the runt is getting yellow, think this might be due to the overwatering from the other day causing the nitrogen levels to drop so i have provided some cal mag (enriched) in the latest watering (05/01/18) to help em get greener and perk up a lil hopefully.
Will be taking pictures at 48hr intervals from now, to go with the more frequent watering as the plants root system grows as well as a preventatitve measure to elimate any smell leaks
08/01/18
Think I've fucked up the first plant pretty badly; need to fix the pH asap. gonna keep using vinegar while i can but i've got some phosphoric acid coming on weds which would help. gonna flush with pH 6.0 plain water til i get a run off of 6.0 and that should maintain the pH till tomorrow evening. fingers crossed everything will turn out alright haha, other plant doing fine, some nice structure to it!
12/01/18
Got greedy and decided to move my plants from 1 gal to 8L growbags - pretty sure i fucked up all roots bar the taproot so not very optimistic on these surviving. attached some photos i just took, one set of leaves on the slightly older plant has yellowed off and starting to die. germed three more to dampen the agony. i thought i could get a flawless grow the first time round but i reckon some mistakes you just need to make to learn! got some rhizotonic coming on monday, fingers crossed that will promote some root growth and fix this mess.
19/01/18
In terms of age - this plant is 39 days from seed but closer to 33 days from germination. At this stage, i'm happy with the progress that im making and how well the plants are growing. i've realised im spending too much time on this grow so i've limited checking up on them to once every two days so next update on the 21st.
27/01/18
So much for every two days LOL - had a lot of irl work to keep up with but yeah the weekend brings with it the start of flowering! from what ive read from othe4 diaries, this strain experiences major growth during the first few weeks of flower so fingers crossed heavy LST should keep that at bay but might need to take more drastic action... the space situation is that deep lmao. upped the feed dosages as theyve gotten bigger now so hopefully they react well in the coming days. might consider come bloom nutes
29/01/18
First proper week of flowering - id say its got at least another 4-5 weeks before its chop chop time but im happy with the progress and will feed more on tuesday evening! happy growing (:
03/02/18
Apologies for the inconsistent updates - at the beginning I was really worried if I'd be spending too much time on here updating every tiny little detail but I'm glad that's not been the case. I think updating every 5 days is best in terms of seeing results and from week 7 I'll be making sure that I only upload relevant pictures - looking back I've realised close-ups dont really offer much information. Seeing the first white hairs around the bud sites now, I've counted 8 side branches per plant with the Runt (darker one) having a very nicely kept canopy of bud sites. I've managed to do this by training the main stem of the plant to almost go round in a circle around the side of the plant - this was attemped on the Don as well but with a less impressive result. The two plants are also distinctly different in colour and stature - the Runt being darker and bushier (clearly it's genotype is more indica leaning) while the Don is more spindly with longer fan leaves and a paler colour. I should note that it also has a relatively greater internodal distance especially after the 5th node - characteristic of sativa genetics. There is some nutrient burn on both plants with the Don having lost two fan leaves to improper rootzone pH balance and the Runt having some burn on its fan leaves. Next watering will be a light feeding of nothing but Calmag pH'd at 6.0. I dont expect this strain to be too far from the finish - perhaps another 4/5 weeks - but what do I know!
06/02/18
Having lots of yellow fan leaves on the smaller plant, this one has given me problems since germ LOL - I thought it was a nutrient issue but after increasing nute feed (especially N), I saw slightly faster growth and some nute burn but no solution to the yellowing. This has led me to believe that it's a pH issue so I flushed the plants a few days ago and removed the yellow leaves. Fingers crossed this fixes the problem although any comments would be appreciated.
10/02/18
The yellowing seems to have stopped but I do still get smaller yellow leaves falling off - possibly because I've really been restricting how much nitrogen is available to them. Will be switching to bloom nutes next week.
12/02/18
Boosted the bloom nutes this week - although I reckon I might have added too much during todays feed even though the ppm was steady at 600. We'll see. The canopy that I spent so long to create has finally - as predicted - experienced the flowering stretch leaving some sidebranches at a different level to others showing apical dominance but this is nothing a little mid-week LST-ing wouldn't fix.
The smaller plant is about 1-2 days ahead of its counterpart in terms of bud formation so looks more mature but I know I'll be getting a fatter yield from the Runt.
Thinking of what I wanna do for my next grow now that this one is in its final third. Mephisto?
14/02/18
Day 59 - major growth approximately an inch and a half of vertical growth in the past two days so much so that I've LST'd the main and side branches down (45 degree angle). Fed twice in a row so the next watering will just be pH'd water and then approximately two more weeks of feeding and a 10 day flush.
17/02/18
As week 8 comes to an end, I've not really seen much change bar an inch/inch and a half of vertical growth. I hope this means that it's stretch has come to an end and now will be focusing on fattening up buds and resin production. I've not really seen an improvement in the growth since the change from 6500K to 2700K but I hope that it's more evident in the coming few weeks, At least the pictures look a little nicer now :D
19/02/18
Day 63 - Not much change over the past few days bar the flowers getting slightly larger. Saw a small amount of frost on the leaves near the top of the cola of the runt (the one that's a few days ahead) so fingers crossed this continues over the next few weeks as right now it's not looking too pretty.
26/02/18 - Day 70
In my first week plans for the grow, I was expecting to harvest today. I have atleast another 3-4 weeks left. I'm starting to think about what grow I want to do next; I'm definitely going to be doing just the one plant because it's too awkward having two. Gonna have a single mephisto in a 15L pot. keep posted for that.
the don is getting frosty, there's frost on the main bud as well as some of the side colas. the runt is getting there, probably has 4-5 weeks left.
27/02/18 - Day 71
Quick update, work didnt need me today so had the day off - did some quick defoliation, my hands were getting restless. i removed a handful of sidebranches near the 2nd/3rd nodes because those were never seeing light as well as some fan leaves and scraggly leaf/bud near the bottom of the colas. the Don is smelly mighty good.
05/03/18 - Day 77.
Just learnt a fundamental lesson
06/03/18 - Day 78
Buds getting bigger and frostier. Will post images of smaller plant later on during the week.
I just realised yesterday that my garden has been exposed to 35°C ambient temperatures for the past four weeks; the effects of which are very clearly visible in the degree of growth at the the tops of the colas as compared to the bottom. Temperatures now idling around 30° consistently after adding an extra fan.
12/03/18 - Day 84
Had a major major fuck up - was out raving with my mates and forgot to water for three days. don't know how it happened but it did and i lost a lot of fucking foliage and some small branches. fed as soon as i could and nuted up. back in action for the final few weeks of this grow, hopefully potency isn't affected too much by this even though the plants currently look like shit. updates on day day 88. the small one will probs finish within 100 days. the bigger probably 110 - got the creme de la chem germing as I type this
18/03/18 - Day 91
The small plant has 75% milky trichomes, started flush a few days ago and changed the positioning of the plants within the tent. i know its a little late but i also added a scrog net (next grow will involve a topped plant). gonna flush for a week and harvest on 22nd if everything goes to plan.
ive realised the extent to which the bigger plan suffered nitrogen toxicity after realising how poor the bud to leaf ratio is today; gave it a heavy manicure and defoliated any dried out leaves, large unneccesary leaves blocking light and got rid of scraggly growth and lpw buds. the feed was off during flower - gonna use a different formula for next grow.
possibly 3-4 more weeks for the larger plant. more updates in Week 13 - really happy this grow is coming to an end - I have learnt a lot and im definitely looking forward to implementing everything I've picked up into my next grow. better genetics, better setup, better preparation. Happy Growing!
24/03/18 Day 103
The harvest on the first plant was absolutely awful. I harvested far too early and the buds all look underdeveloped. Oh well, not bad for a first grow veg was excellent think i bottled it during flower LOL> The second plant is well into Week 13 now and is looking fantastic. Some of the buds have been swelling up and getting nice and dense. I think this strain will potentially hit 130 days but I don't mind at this point, learnt the dangers of being impatient the hard way 😆 The long flower time I reckon is due to heat stress and underwatering during week 8-11.
The first plant is curing as we speak, smells really sweet - gonna give it a month long cure. 12g dry.
31/03/18 - Day 110
Been really busy with daytime commitments so have been giving this grow minimal time and attention recently. The plant is doing very well despite one of my extractor fans breaking down in the middle of the night. Also had some more issues with underwatering but the buds are swelling up and getting stinky. More updates in Week 15.
05/04/18 - Day 115
This plant has been dragging on and on however I think this grow is coming to an end - started flushing yesterday so fingers crossed we should have this wrapped up before Day 130. Been a very long grow and I think that's due a combination of genetics, environmental factors such as heat stress, underwatering and overfeeding as well as a longer flower period due to the type of lighting used.
There are lots of purple specks on the buds and I initially thought this was burn from heat stress due to proximity to lamps but glad to know that it's due to night-time temps plunging below 20C on most days. The undersides of some leaves and stems are also turning purple.
A little worried that the plants might run out of food but at this point I'm just gonna bank on the coco and food stores to carry it the rest of the way. More updates in Week 16.
