These day Zamaldelica Express Auto is my go to plant. I hope to get higher potency from the original photoperiod version. The flowering time is also three months long. I can just grow through tropical raining season and hopefully harvest by dry winter time.
As much as I don’t like regular seed, I can not get on feminized version. Oh well, more work during short vegging period.
Germinating in substrate without any fertilizer. More work but survival rate is much better. These are regular seeds and I want the maximum number to survive so I can get good female plants.
From the start, all five seeds popped okay. Messed one up in cotton pad stage and broke root off. This was the first one to bit the dust. My bad.
Put seedlings in 2-inches thimbles. Half peat moss and half pearlite with no fertilizer. I need as many regular seeds to survive to get at least a female. So, I did not put in hot soil as my lazy usual.
Day 7 - one seed decide not to go further. And there are three seedlings left.
Day 8 –Space in the light box cleared for two slots. And I transplanted two plants to 2- liter containers a little sooner than I should.
At the end of the week, these two plants did really well.
Day 14 transplanted the third plant to 2-liters pot.
Day 21- Zamal Delica is displaying the vigor and strength.
Plant 2 and 3 were transplanted after only one week. By the end of week 3, they look ready to go out for natural sunlight. They are 14 cm tall.
Plant 3 was transplanted one week later. And there was an issue with broken root ball. Root damage delay plant grow by at least a week. She is 8 cm tall. During an early stage, any mistakes show up big, after a few weeks of vegging, slower plants usually catches up. At least what I hope they would do.
Next week, I am taking them outside. They should be right at home in wet tropical season with genetic composition of Zamal/Malawi/Thai.
Moved Zamaldelica plant 1 and 2 were doing fine outside. I am letting them grow for a week more before sexing them. They look so nice. I may just take a cutting to see how the flower would be instead of putting the entire plant into flower.
Plant number 3 is slow. I did messed up during transplant but it should have recovered after almost two weeks. I think I am scrapping this one. Before that, I am putting her into shade area outside to induce flowering.
Environment during the week: Hot, cloudy, sporadic rain, Cretacious period weather where giant venomous lizards frolic in my backyard.
Hottest part of the day during the week;
40 degree C, Humidity 60%, VPD 2.9 steam cooker
Coolest part of the night during the week; 28 degree C, Humidity 85%, VPD 0.56
Feeding summary
Monday: Rain, Fed 2 liters, per liter (0.6 gram guano, 1.5 ml compost tea).
Tuesday: Growth compost tea.
Wednesday: Trimmed and trained. Fed 1.5 liters, per liter (0.4 grams 10/52/17 fertilizer).
Thursday: Light rain
Friday:
Rain
Saturday: Fish bone tea
Sunday: Water
Damaged by spider mites. Zamaldelica plants do not have good resistance to this kind of pest. Heat makes spider mite eat more and breeds faster. I still refuse to use chemicals pesticides. If I have to use microbes and neem oil more often, so be it.
Fed only once with 0.66 gram guano/liter very early this week. It was raining and very hot. Mold and bugs abound and I don't want to weaken plants by over feeding them.
Plant 1 is not growing much. Seemed that sex may start to show and I may not have to clone it at all. Let’s see next week.
Plant 2 is doing well, hope that it is not a boy.
Plant number 3 did not seemed to grow.
One of a bigger lizard wandered into my neighbor yard. I grabbed it and toss it back into a water ditch where it came from. My neighbor was impressed and took our picture. These creatures are nasty. They are full of deadly bacteria and has toxic saliva. Hope I don’t have to do this very often.
I clone for sex.
Trained height at 25 cm tall
Trimmed plant 1 and plant 2. The cuttings go to humidity box in the shade.
If they take roots, they are likely to produce flower in low light condition. Then I can see the sex of these plants.
Keeping both plant 1 and 2 in 7 liter containers until I have an idea of their sex. I don’t want to waste effort on a male plant.
Plant 3 is a runt. I am keeping it as a back up of in case plant 1 and plant 2 are boys.
Uncertainty at vegging stage is a part of growing from regular seeds.
Didn’t really want to transplant until I know the sex. But what the heck, worst I can do if I find males is to use cannabis soil for my other plants.
Zamaldelica plant 1, continue to grow as trained. Transplanted to 25 liter laundry basket at the end of the week. Still not showing sex. One clone from plant 1 surviving. And the clone from plant 1 is also not showing sex.
Zamaldelica plant 2, spread about. Transplanted to 25 liter laundry basket at the end of the week. Still not showing sex. One clone from plant 2 surviving. And the clone from plant 2 is also not showing sex.
Plant 3 that I was going to scrap was perky. Transplanted to 7 liter basket. Tried to train her and snapped two primary top. I then cut of the two tops and trying to clone them. Now plant 3 look like a stump. LOL.
I am leaving the clones from plant 1 and 2 to take root for a week then I am putting them in a shaded area to flower.
Still can’t tell sex from the clones yet. The genetic mix between Asian and African Sativa seemed to be a challenge to tame.
Zamaldelica plant 1, continue to grow well in liter laundry basket. Sativa do like more airy soil.
The clone is not showing sex. And is a bit shaky. I’ll put her in a shaded spot to see if it would show pistil or ball. Somehow, I think this will take a good while.
Zamaldelica plant 2 just started to recover from leaves and branch trimming. Clone from this plant is also not showing sex yet.
After a week, the two cuttings from plant 3 is looking good. Actually better than the mother plant.
Plant 3 is still small. Instead of scrapping it, I am putting the mother into flower. Well, I am trying any way. Zamaldelica does what it does. The cuttings will go into 18 hours LED grow case next week.
Not so easy to tame Zamaldelica. After a full week in the shade, it still not clear cut on what sex the clones from plant 1 and plant 2 are. These clones look real nice but sex status remain as “Questioning”.
Also took training wire off. Letting plants move about in the wind to strengthen sativa stems. Plants prop themselves up and are taller.
Zamaldelica plant 1, and plant 2 continue to grow. They are respectable size. On the other hand, I hate to spend any effort on a male plant. Waiting one more week until the fortune telling clones would let me know what to do..
The two clones from Plant 3 are looking great. Clones from large healthy branches do better. And clone from twigs takes three weeks longer than clones from good side branches.
Plant 3 was put in the shade for a week. Still can’t tell sex either. Hope it’s a she because I do like these two clones.
I want to see which is an easier way to tell sex.
1) Keep parent plants and clone to tell sex.
2) Let parent plant flower but take clones before hand.
So far, no result from either way yet.
Still can’t be definite on the gender. This is after putting clones in the shade for two weeks. I am running plant 1 and 2 through the course as if they are girls. This week, I trimmed off leaves and sucker branches.
Think that I need to play with c/n ratio (carbon / nitrogen). Basic idea is that plant will flower once they have metabolized and store up carbohydrate. If they have too much nitrogen, then they would continue to get bigger and grow more leaves.
So I start feeding Zamaldelica plants with molasses and bloom nutes at the end of the week. Hopefully, by next week, the clones would let me know their gender.
Plant 1 – slender with two main columns.
Plant 1 is in well familiar form. Looks like a Thai and behaving like a Thai. In this case, she won’t flower until fall equinox.
Key is to keep her small in a container.
On the clone, I still can see long pistils coming out. There are some buds that I can’t decide if there are leaves buds or balls. My mistake is probably by giving worm casting in the mix. I don’t think she will flower until nitrogen is depleted.
This may take a few weeks. Light deprivation only make her stretchy.
Plant 2 – unfamiliar Sativa.
Plant 2 has four main columns. The main crotch split from the weight and not quite healed. So, I looped a piece of wire to keep it from splitting further. I need to glue this split crotch later to prevent disease.
Plant 2 produces many side branches. Would be great if she is a garden basil that I use for cooking Thai food.
Zamaldelica plant 2 leaves smell like it would make a nice salad.
Plant 2 clone is not flowering either. At least I can see that it has leaves buds and not ball.
Plant 3 – vigorous runt.
Plant 3 was slow. And still had not caught up. It is doing well in the rain.
I took out the two clones and transplanted to a 2 liter pot. One died after a couple of days while the other is okay. Could be that I did not mix the soil well enough and there were pockets of concentrated fertilizer that killed the root.
Strategy for this plant is to flower the mother and raise the clone. Again, the mother plant 3 had not flower after same treatment as plant 1 and plant 2.
Nope, still don’t know gender of my three plants yet.
Three weeks in the shade. With bloom nutes added, neither the clone nor the plant that I put into flower had shown flower.
Continue to grow Zamaldelica as I would a female plant. So far it had been nearly three months of effort on unknown gender.
The plants are getting too tall and I topped off about 10 cm of the top shoots on plant 1 and 2. Letting the bigger plants recover for a couple of weeks and I’ll put the mother into flower. Also kept the shoots and clone them in case the mothers would tell me their genders.
Plant 1 T – slender with two main columns. I suspect that this plant is a male.
First clone of this plant stretched but still no pistils nor ball. There are some buds that look like flower but it could easily turns to leave buds.
Plant 2 Z – thick stem bushy plant. The smell is a bit different. This is the Zamaldelica that I expect from the product description. Cut the top of main cola’s to make clone.
Clone from plant 2 is fully vegging LOL.
New buds are green and clearly leaf buds.
ball.
Plant 3 – vigorous runt.
Plant 3 was misshapen from broken off tops early in the grow. Stem snaked about. The clone form plant 3 is doing very well. However the thing is I am concern about is the gender. Again, this plant is also still fully in veg.
So, one more week to let plant recover from topping. Then I am putting the mother in flower regardless of the gender.
Hybrid of three land race Sativa’s behaves like an honest landrace. So I keep on soldering with this one. It is difficult but there will be less adulteration with Indica nor Rudelaris.
Thank you for following. Comments and suggestions will be appreciated.
None of the clones shows gender. I have space but ran out of patience. I am putting the mother plants in shade to flower.
They are good 4 ft, (120 cm) tall plants. If any is a male and flowers while I am away, pollen storm will engulf my entire garden.
Plant 1 T – slender with two main columns. Saw hairs on the plant. Hair is green so it could still go to leaves instead of flower.
Putting plant 1 T in an 80 liter pots. Plan to add about 10 liters of earth worm casting in the mix. More root space and rich fertilizer probably won’t encourage her to flower. Let’s see how big she can get.
Clones from plant 1 – might be a pistil?
Looks like it but can’t be absolutely sure. Clones will be in the shade for one more week.
I do have a new clone from last week topping that look like it will survive. This give me the freedom to do anything with this particular clone.
Plant 2 Z – thick stem bushy plant. Didn’t even see hair yet. Just lots of leaves buds. Also Putting Plant 2 Z in another 80 liter pots. That is all the 80 liters container that I have. They are so big and I can’t lift it up when they are filled.
Clones from plant 2. Buds are leaves buds. Can’t tell gender.
Plant 3 – vigorous runt but still not telling gender.
Plant 3 clone looks real nice in the light box.
I do hope to see flower soon. Zamal Delica sure grows like a tropical native. Means that they will flower in season. And I better; keeps pot size small, not feed them nitrogen, deprave them from light, pull them down.
Clones were five weeks outside of the light casting, still no flowers. The mother plants are big enough and I put them into flower.
In short, cloning to get sex did not work for Zamal Delica. Well, in general, putting land race Sativa into flower with summer day light does not work.
Plant 1 is in an 80 liters pots. Putting it away from light. No particular issue. No flower yet after a week. Soil of the entire pot was re-mixed. 30% by volume of earth worm casting.
And I decided that I would be putting the first round plant 1 clone in 7-liters pots to continue growing.
Plant 2 – is also in an 80 liters pot. 2/3rd of the soil pot was re-mixed. Old soil is mainly pumice. This one can use wood vinegar with watering. Acidic water should release Silicon, Calcium, and Magnesium from pumice.
Mother plant 2 looks like she is in pre-flower. Oh I so hope. But can’t be absolutely certain just yet.
Again, I opt to put plant 2 clone back into veg and expand the pot to 7-liters.
Second round cuttings of plants 2 looks okay. If it survive, I have more opportunities to test plant 2.
Plant 3 clone is coming out of the light box. And I am putting the mother plant away from night casting shadow to see if it show me flower.
If plant 3 is a she, then I would be nurturing the clone.
Second round, with one top from each plant got me only one surviving clone. This clone is from plant 2.
Still transitioning but all three plants look female. I guess it depend on how you count flowering period. I only call it flower when pistils and buds are clearly developed.
Plant 1 mother is big. Leaves yellow since I neglected to water her for two days. Pistils on clone is seen. Great.
Plant 2 is more branch. I can’t see pistils on the mother. However, I can see pistil threads on the clone.
Plant 3, put the mother into shadow. This one is the shortest and staying in 7 liter pot. Yub, it’s a she. I keep the clone to let her grow big.
Problem is I planned on two females. Now I have three Sativa plants with 15 weeks flowering period. Oh well, I’ll reconfigure my plan.
Zamaldelica mother plants are three weeks away from light leak. Plant 1 and 2 are still in pre-flower stage. Plant 3 is smaller with less robust root but had produce female flowers.
Plant 1 and Plant 2 mothers are in big 80 liters container. Even with so much cloud the flower pistils died off and flower buds turn to leave buds. This is what I get from giving her root room. Wiser people had said that Zamaldelica would behave better in small restrictive pot.
Plant 1 and plant 2 clones happily re-vegged. After transfer from 3-liters pot to 7-liters pot, it took the clones only one week to completely fill this pot with root. Normally, I gave my plants three weeks at each step. So, I up size their pot to 20-liters basket. I must be addicted to pain. I know that the girls will continue to be wild and will not act civil with larger pot. Well, I am letting them ride out the monsoon rain season. If they get too big, I’ll trim them as I would on a hedge.
I have made a second round of clones. I doubt that I would have space for it. However, for 6 plants rule scenario, big Sativa tree is preferred.
Plant 3 nicely flowered. Transplanted her to 20-liters basket. And I noticed that her root had not fill out the 7-liters pot.
Plant 3 clone did well. I changed the pot to 25-liters basket. Yes, this is bigger pot than the mother. I want to veg her a little longer. Again, root had not quite fill out the pot. Plant 3 is not vigorous. I am not going any further with this pheno.
No feeding yet. Recent transplant has enough fresh earth worm casting and sugar plant cake as fertilizer. As in my other plant, I stimulate the root at each transfer with rooting hormone and chitosan. Also added compost tea since it had made my other plant veg much better.
Zamaldelica are doing really well in their natural environment. Well, as close to natural as a poly-hybrid from Asia and Africa could be.
This week was full of tropical rainstorms. Strong wind whipping plants side to side. And the rain lasted all day long.
Plant 1 and plant 2 are growing big and taller. This is expected. I don’t think she will be over two meters. Pistils are showing. No feeding yet but I think I’ll need to feed next week. I think heavy rain leaches off good part of the nutrients.
Clone from plant 1 and plant 2 quickly shot up after transplanted to 20-liters basket. Clone from plant 2 seemed to have more branches and growing better. I have trimmed small branches off to dress the structure.
Plant 3 is producing dense flower. I held her back in 7-liters container. I only re-planted her in 20-liters basket last week. And she stretches and grew with more soil. Flowering is faster and thicker.
I think auto versions are made from this denser and smaller phenotype.
.
Plant 1 is 170 cm tall, produced the start of flowers after three weeks in the shadow.
Plant 2 is also tall. She is slow and still in pre-flower stage with the same low light treatment.
Plant 3 was kept small. And she is well ahead in flowering
Gave the plant a spray of anti-insect microbes and some potassium fertilizer. Zamaldelica does not have strong resistance against spider mite.
Happy to report that nothing exciting happened this rainy week 😁
This week diary comes right off my phone.
Plant 1 is staying 170 cm tall. Ain’t so bad. Good work Ace Seeds on muti-Sativa hybrid.
Plant 2 grew 10 cm to 180 can height. Not that tall. Female flower finally shown. Yea.
Plant 3 has ver short internode. Most of her length is filled with flowers and leaves. Let’s see how strong is her resistance to botrytis. The structure is dense and not airy.
Gave the plant a spray of anti-insect microbes and cal mag.
Fed them with and some phosphate salt fertilizer, compost tea, sea weed, and fish bone tea.
Raining most of the week.
Plant 1 is in bloom and stop stretching. She is 170 cm tall. Open and thin structure with long leave spacing. Overall, not so big as I first feared.
Plant 2 slow down in her stretch. She is 185 cm tall. Holding my breath and hope she would stay under 2 meters. Pistils just started to be clearly seen only after four weeks into flower. This one will take three weeks longer than her batch mates.
Plant 3 is still developing flowers. She has short leave spacing in hybrid Indica manner.
Fed them with and some potassium salt fertilize. I alternate this every other week with phosphate fertilizer. Seemed that less feeding is better with long flowering type.
Riding in along in the jungle.
Fed plants once with and some phosphate salt fertilizer. Spray once with anti-insect microbe as preventative action. And it was raining and hot all week. This week rain is forecasted to be heavier.
Plant 1 is producting lots of flower. I was positively surprised with plant 1. She vegged like a classic sativa but the branches are long squirrel tails of flower.
Plant 2 flowering seemed to have just started. She is more branchy. Her leaves are yellowing. Probably due to added worm casting. I am not excited by yellowing Sativa leaves. Looks natural to me at this age.
One clone form each of plant 1 and 2 were put into 40 liters container. They are doing well and are starting to flower.
Plant 3 continues developing flowers. This is the easiest phenotypes to start flowering. Her clone also started to flower. I kept the clone in light casting but with cloudy days, they flowers any way.
I am going to feed them very lightly for a month. This is cruising stage. Key is to keep bugs away until harvest.
At work, people are so tense on this covid thing. Yes, things are terrible. And the storm shall soon pass. I think it is better to focus what can be done. Support and love are needed more than ever. My secret is that I use weed to keep me sane. Wish this is legal so the world will have more positivity.
Week highlight – I scrapped moldy plant 3. So many plants, it is easier to start over.
Plant 1 is becoming my favorite phenotype. Height is about 6 foot with wide spread branch. Fits well in 80 liter pot. And squirrel tail flower is developing nicely. Think I’ll clone this phenotype for one more round.
Plant 2 is a little bigger than plant 1. Flowering takes longer. And I don’t like this trait.
Plant 3 is fuzzier than her batch mates. She flower the easiest with short internode distance. This phenotype would be great for a tent set up. I saw brown leaves and took closer look. Sure enough, there was fussy mold. I could recover her but don’t see the point.
Fed plants once with and guano – about half a gram per liter of water.
Put clones in pot.
Plant 1 and plant 2 clones – one of each – in 40-liter pots.
Plant 3 in big 80-liters pot. This week I need to give her compost tea. It tends to stretch plant. This should increase internode distance a little. Hope it would help with mold. Regardless, raining season should lighten up in a couple of months. And they should not be mold issue for a self-respecting sativa by then.
Disaster struck.
Plant 1 – flowers were so heavy. Main stem split badly and 2/3rd of the plant was lost. (sob).
So, I put stakes on plant 2 in case she get heavy.
Dried the broken off branch. There is about 6 more weeks to go. Plants was very green. And it was a lot of work to trim only to get very small buds. Oh well, little is better than none. Smell wicked though.
Plant 3 clone was dying. Roots were damaged. Either by hot soil or by rough transplant. She is not going to recover. And I pulled plant 2. I have more plants lined up than flowering space. And this 80-liters pot is now available.
Then, I moved plant 1 clone from 40-liters pot to 80 liters-pot. Hope she survive. I think she would. Plant 1 phenotype is vigorous.
Plant 2 is doing okay. Some yellowing leaves. I am used to Sativa shedding leaves.
Plant 2 clone is okay too in the 40-liters pot.
I have two more small plant 3 clones. I am running them through the gauntlet but this phenotype seemed better suit for indoor grow,
Fed plants once with and potassium based. Stimulate them with fish tea, compost tea, and root stimulant.
Seeing some purple on leaves of plant 1. In hot weather, it means phosphate and magnesium deficiency.
Next week, I am switching to phosphate salt and molasses.
This week, I went to a company outing with evening party. It was no fun. Until I lit one up. Then people started to follow suit. Then the party started. Fun is infectious, it just need a little catalyst.
Head whacking strong!
Immature flowers were dried, ground, and smoked. Effect was immediate. Strong smiling sativa high as expected. Then the effect kept getting stronger. After that, I had trouble finding my balance. Smoking a Zamaldelica joint got me to my cannabis limit. It was so strong, I still was high when I got up in the morning.
I thought auto-Thai and auto-Zamaldelica were very strong. Zamaldelica is stronger and will put most people into greening out zone after a full bowl. A couple of long drags is all it takes to get good high.
I can see no quick medicinal benefits from Zamaldelica. Aches and pains are all in place. My heart was raising. My legs was wobbly. Things were funny when I was high. I got the thirst and hunger. Went to sleep easily enough.
I like the up high very much. However, Zamaldelica surely would incapacitates me, so, I won’t be smoking it that much. It is best smoke when I am by myself for a long period. And Zamaldelica buds are definitely too strong to make edibles. On the other hand, is each plant is so big and productive. I now realize that I have too many Zamaldelica plants.
Side note, I just got myself an electric coffee bean grinder. It is so much easier. And ground buds also need less storage space.
One issue is that grounded weed is denser. And I need to roll thinner joint to avoid greening out.
Week notes:
Torrential rain for one or two hours practically every day. Interior or dry climate weeds would have died from root rot. And I found feeding was difficult. Rain flushes away nutes but it was difficult to guage how much. I want to fail on the side of underfeeding. So I fed slightly higher than normal. If the nutes get wash off, I get less buds but still better than no buds.
I fed the girls with phosphorous nutes. Some leaves were turning purple on plant 2. Also bought a new additive. This is a mixture between sea weed and fish amino acids. It stinks but seemed to be stimulating root well. I also started feeding yoghurt and molasses.
Spray once on Saturday with anti-mold microbes. Bugs have all drowned in the heavy rain. Just in case, I added cal-mag to the spray ingredient. Then, the rain came about couple hours later. Oh well, I spray microbe again in the middle of next week.
Growing progress
Plant 1 – flowers is getting heavier. Looking legit. Plant 1 clones are still okay despite shoddy transplant.
This is the phenotype that I like. Normally, I would clone it. In this case, I don’t know what to do with crazy strong purely for fun buds. I want more of medicinal weeds. But plant 1 is a very good phenotype. So, I do wonder if I should clone un-needed weed or not.
Plant 1 clone seemed to survive rain okay.
Plant 2 is doing okay. Some yellowing leaves. Flower is not uniform. Lower and middle sucker branches have flower. But these are small. Higher bigger branches received more light and flowers are less developed. Staggered harvest and some branches will be worthless. I need to tuck these branch away form the light.
Plant 2 clone is okay too in the 40-liters pot. The plant received less light in the night. And as spring solstice passed, she also is getting less light during the day. Flower development is faster than the mother plant. Zamaldelica needs under 12 light hours to flower.
Plant 3 clones are progressing along. They should be big enough by the end of October. And that is the starting of my dry season. High resistance to mold is not good enough during tropical raining season. I need “very high” resistance. And I am not making more clone of this phenotype number three.
10 Weeks after the parent plants were put into flower. Plant 1 is stacking. Picture of the main cola doesn’t really show how well she is fattening up. Zamaldelica, on the other hand, is not showing frost. Next week, I’ll trim and then cola density will be morevisible.
I am not worry about potency event without frosty trichome. I smoked immature buds from broken off branch and got one hell of a kick. My harvest decision will on when I think that flowers won’t get any bigger. Most likely I’ll go by browning pistils.
Activity notes
This week was again full of rain. Overcast sky and temperature cooled down a bit. Still hot by European standard. Drizzling rain alternates with tropical storm down pour. Mold resistance is exceptionally strong in Zamaldelica. I fed the plants then the rain flushed all away.
Activity notes
Sunday – started make yogurt from whole milk and a small bottle of yogurt.
Monday – Fed yogurt to plants.
Tuesday – Fed additives to plant – sea weed tea / root stimulant auxin / compost tea.
Wednesday – Spray anti-mold microbes – both Trichoderma and Bassiana, added calcium to the spray.
Thursday – Fed one third strength potassium orchid fertilizer.
Friday/Saturday – rain.
Progress
Plant 1 – flowers is getting heavier. Next week will be the final feeding week. And I’ll start to trim off leaves. Some sign of mold damage on lower colas.
Plant 1 clone was vegging for only 6 weeks. She look much smaller.
Plant 2 has ball type flower. She is spreading out and looking like a good old country Sativa. Lots of open space between branches and nodes. This phenotype is not for indoor. And productivity will probably be less than plant 1.
Plant 2 clones is denser, however. She was grown with less light. Perhaps I did not feed her compost tea during vegging. Looking very nice and not overly big. Plant size can be influence by light intensity, additive, and timing of trimming.
Clones form third and final round of Plant 3 is the shortest and most dense. They are still in early vegging period. There were signs of mold damage after branch trimming on both plant 3 clones. They are recovering and will take a week longer before moving on the the next size pot. Oh well, this phenotypes will like dry climate better. I am vegging them until the end of October. Harvest would be around the end of Jan for plant 3 clones.
I enjoy different phenotypes from Zamaldelica. Each type behaves differently from another. Gardening from seeds is a bit of a gamble. I have extra plants. More plants than I can grow, in fact. So, strategy of selecting only phenotypes that is good for me fits the bill.
Happy growing y’all.
11 Weeks flowering, I finally see harvesting schedule of the plants.
I have three phenotypes from three seeds. I like plant 1 phenotype that is not too big and has vigorous grow. I don’t like the phenotypes that is too gangly with low productivity. Neither do I like the stocky slow growing phenotype with low disease resistance.
Depends on the phenotype that you get, evaluation will be very different.
Plant 1 – is the phenotype that I prefer. She is about 6 ft tall dense foxtail Sativa cola’s.
She will be ready in a couple of weeks. No more feeding. Next well will be trimming. And toward the end of next week, I think I’ll split the main stem.
There is a branch that rot from powder mildew. This can be expected after three weeks of torrential rain. The rest of buds are okay.
Not really related, Bruce Banner No 3 fast version clone was started laterfed the same way, exposed to the same rain. BB 3F put out big chunky cola’s after 5 weeks with no burn and no rot. With this to compare with, rating of Zamaldelica drops.
Plant 1 first clone is just developing flowers. Leaves yellows with over feeding. Stems are small from short vegging period. In my opinion Seemed that Zamaldelica does better with long vegging period. No way to avoid the size. And she does better with very big pot.
Plant 1 second clone is in veg. I’ll keep her. Yest, it takes a long time and big space. However, the up high is great to have in my stash.
Plant 2 – is disappointing. She is big in size but her cola’s are small and airy. Productivity is too low for this day and age of polyploid multiple hybrids. I feel that Zamaldelica plant 2 is more like a wild Saitiva but I am really not a purist.
Plant 2 fist clone is doing well. She is not too big in 40 liter container and doesn’t look like it will be too much work for her.
Plant 2 second clone had grown very big in 80 liters container. However, after a month into flowering, she just in “pre-flower stage”. I am pulling her to clear the space. I can better use resources for other strain.
Second round of Plant 3 clones are still in vegging, I am waiting for the weather to dry up before putting them into flowering.
Activity notes
Ending of our wet season, this week was again full of rain. Every one or two days there were torrential down pour. The key was to keep roots healthy with sogging wet soil.
Activity notes
Sunday – Fed Yogurt.
Monday – Fed enzyme. Sprayed with cal mag, anti-mold, anti-insect microbes,
Tuesday – Fed additives to plant – sea weed tea / root stimulant auxin / compost tea.
Thursday – Fed have strength phosphate orchid fertilizer, potassium salt, orchid fertilizer, seaweed/amino acid additive.
Saturday – yogurt.
Next week is pre-harvest week. If it is dry enough for a couple of days, I’ll trim off leaves. Trimming during rain open doors to infections. Hopefully by the end of next week it will be dry enough for me to either split the stem of ring it.
After twelve weeks of flowering, there are sign of mold. And I am calling it quit.
Trimmed off fan leaves. Checked on trichome. Over all, Zamaldelica plants do not show much trichome. Trichomes are not visible to my old eyes. Comparatively, and Indica dominance plant would have a sea of trichome. Plant 1 trichome is clear and cloudy. Plant 2 flower looks horrible but trichome is rich and nice. Trichome does not always predict potency. I smoked buds from a branch that broken from plant 1. And it was crazy strong.
Stem ringing and stem splitting is a good way to end a Sativa grow, I stabbed plant 1 in the trunk. Plant 2 trunk was too big and I ringed her instead.
Expecting that she will be ready after three to four days. So, this is the final grow entry. In a couple of weeks, I’ll close the diary with a harvest report.
On each plant:
Plant 1
Plant 1 can probably go much longer. She is still giving new white pistils. More clones seemed to be surviving well. One good thing about Zamaldelica is the vigor. She clones easily.
The top cola got mold. The cola is the most denst. And may be the anti-mold spray did not quite reach.
Under the microscope, trichome is few. Plant 1 trichome is clear and just beginning to get cloudy. She could easily go for a month more.
Plant 1 clone number 1 is thin and spindly. I only vegged her in 12 hours light for 6 weeks.
Plant 1 clone number 2 is thick and robust. She had been vegging for 12 weeks. My primary Zamaldelica will be from this clone.
Plant 1 new clones – as troublesome as she is to grow, she is still better than a land race Thai but with similar effect. I still have a small need of Sativa in my life. So, I think I’ll try maintain one Zamal Delica plant in my garden for a bit longer. There are three new clones that just started.
Plant 2
Plant 2 looks like she is tired. Flowers are miserably small but pistils are brown. She looks like wild land race Sativa. Numerous leaves (low calyx-to-leaves ratio). I hate trimming this plant.
And part of the plant 2 delayed flower. It was exposed to more light and developed about a month later.
Under the microscope, I was pleasantly surprised. There is more trichome than plant 1.
I don’t like the look of plant 2 flowers. They seemed damaged by root burn and recovered. Small numerus calyx would take a lot of work.
So, I don’t think I am going to harvest this plant. I’ll give her away and won’t bother with the drying part.
.
Plant 2 clones.
Plant 2 clone that is staying in a smaller 40 liters pot is developing well. Cola is denser than the mother in 80 liters pot. How you grow Zamaldelica matters a lot on how plant will develop in term of calyx shape and density. Another lesson learned.
On the other hand, plant 2 clones in 80 liters pot had not flower after 4 weeks in the shade. So after 4 months of growing, I am pulling this one off. I can use the space for other plants that are getting ready.
Plant 2 is taller, less dense, and is very sensitive to light. I might as well be growing a land race squirrel tail Thai. I don’t want any more out of her. So nope, no more clone out of this one.
Plant 3
Plant 3 clones is vegging well. I plan to put her into flower by mid-December. So, I am going to close this diary without reporting on this phenotype.
Plant 3 is smaller and flower the easiest. I think her root system is weak and does not tolerate water logging well. She would do fine in a hill area. And this would be great in a tent. But she is not for me. Again, I am not continuing with clone on plant 3.
Daz from Mephisto Seeds bred and auto version of Zamaldelica as a Night Owl Seeds project. He commented on how he selected “middle of the road” phenotype to breed.
And I finally understand and appreciate his comments.
Ace Seeds also launched a Zamaldelica auto version.
If you don’t want to go on 7 to 8 months project, an auto version might be better. Zamaldelica Express from Night Owl Seeds was way strong. Zamaldelica photo is even stronger. One or two puff and people will get a good high. A small joint put me near greening out. In other words, a weaker auto version will still be an extremely potent smoke. For me, I just like growing photo better because it takes less care just need more head room and time.
Activity notes
Rain is letting up. Temperature drop by a couple of degree Celcius. I need the last few days before harvest to be without rain.
Activity notes
Sprayed anti-mold microbes on Tuesday,
Fed enzyme on Wednesday to help breakdown stuff from last week yoghurt.
Trim leaves off on Thursday. Found mold on plant 1. Trashed top cola. (T T)
Stabbed the stem on Friday evening.
Thank you for following this venture. What I have got out of this one will be small amount of super potent mango smelling buds with clean high. It is nice to have a variety on lemony/sour fruity Thai smell.
And I have a phenotype that I like to keep cloning for a while.
Final thoughts - I wonder if I can keep bonsai Zamaldelica in a small pot for more than a year. Two inch diameter trunk about a foot tall. I can tell people its maple.
Hi guys,
First grow finished. Yield was low from mold attack. I think it could be because it is grown out of season. Out of my stubbornness, I am continuing with this diary on how the clones would do in my best season.
High was execำptional. I don't like the taste and smell. Sure it is different from Thai and Haze but nothing to get too excited about.
Note on mold – Ace Seeds said that Zamaldelica has strong resistance on Botrytis and Powder Mildew. These are true. However, there are other mold species in hot and wet tropical climate that can still eat up cannabis. Zamaldelica plants have strong resistance in a sense that mold won’t kill them. Plant recover but cola’s and nuggets looks horrible. This kind of resistance is not good enough for me. Again, let’s see how they would do when grown in the right season.
Nonetheless, I feel that the conditions were not fair to evaluate Zamaldelica. So, I want to give this strain another go. This time, I have vegged her in the raining season and put her in flower during primary dry season.
I had three phenotypes. Type 2 is toast. Horrible looking buds that dried like hay.
Type 1 is good classic Sativa.
Type 3 is shorter and quicker but has weak root.
Good news it that were no hermie despites all sort of stress. Seemed like Ace Seeds weeded out hermies from their breeding stock.
So here I go again.
Plant 1 – a is the biggest one and had been vegged fro 11 weeks. Then she transitioned for 3 more weeks. So, about 8 to 10 more weeks to go.
Another idea it to keep this in a small container. Plant 1 – a and Plant 1 - b were put into 10-liters pot. Smaller pots mean it is easier to control height and diseases. Maybe it is better to grow 8 plants in 10 liters pot than one plant in 80 liters pot.
Plant 3-a and Plant 3-b are the shorter phenotype. And the clones just been moved to flowering spot. She flower much easier and I think both phenotypes will finish about the same time as plant 1.
What I am trying to do with this grow are:
Feed only lightly.
Keep the soil dry.
Aggressive trimming. I rrimed off disease inviting small branches.
I got three female plants and grown these in wet tropical season. The conditions is much too hot and wet.
Good thing is that the was no hermaphrodite despite all sort of stress.
Bad thing is that of the three female plants that I got, none are the same during grow.
The long flowering time comes from 3 weeks of transitioning period. And I found no difference in effect with flowers harvested after 6 weeks of flowering or 12 weeks of flowering.
Early harvest has less problem with molds and bugs. Less yield is better than tiny yield.
And Zamaldelica resistance is not strong. She welcomes mold and I lost buds. However, Zamaldelica continues to produces new flower and pistils after mold attacked her. The cola look bad but she survive. This is not the strong resistance that I want.
Trimming is a real pain. The flowers are light but stack tight against each other with lots of thin long leaves. After drying, the flowers looks like classic Sativa. Once upon a time, ganja was also known as grass. And I ended up grind the flowers after curing. This saves space.
On each phenotype:
Phenotype 1 is my best phenotype. Strong and robust. Tolerates some wetness and takes fertilizer in light/moderate lever. However, I lost some flowers still rot in 90% humidity at 16 degree C day time temperature. Staking is a must as branches are thin but cola’s are big and heavy during flowering.
Phenotype 2 is also vigorous but is a heart breaker. She flowers a week shorter than phenotype1. Her flowers rot much more at the end five months of work would go to compost pile.
Phenotype 3 is quick and short. However, this phenotype has weak root system. And can use Mycorrhiza from early stage. She dies with over watering and over feeding. Dry soil and light to no feeding during flowering.
I am growing Zamaldelica one more time with clone from phenotype 1. And this is in dry season. So, let’s see if I feed and water less, how she will do. After this, I am going back to South East Asian Sativa variants.
Zamal Delica Clone – Week 19 in life, Week 10 in flower.
Updating progress on the clones.
I have kept only clone from phenotype 1. Toss out phenotype 2 and phenotype 3 for having weak root. I used Mycorrhiza too late. After plants started into flower, new root did not develop much. So, Mycorrhiza can not help
Zamaldelica clone is doing well in dry season. There was no mold. I only had to contend with spider mites and catepillars. And I have been feeding her much less than the mother from seed. Also watering was much less without help from the rain.
Again, flowers buds are small but numerous. I have not found a way to make them bigger. And the branch are unevenly developed.
After 10 weeks into flower, I group the branches in to 3 classes.
Class 1 – Mostly orange hair.
These are from lower branches and are ready for harvest. Flower started first as they received less night light. Some of these branches broke from the weight of buds. It is not that buds are heavy. Zamaldelica just has very thin branch.
I am going to harvest them tomorrow morning. I usually harvest at dawn when buds smell the strongest. Later in the day, the heat evaporates ganja smell.
As it is, bud from this round is smelling much nicer. It is more like a green mango. In the tropic, we take both green and ripe mango. Green mango is sour. And ripe mango is sweet.
Class 2 - Half orange hair and half white hair.
I am giving them branches one more week. It is a real bitch to trim Zamaldelica. Staggering harvest spreads the work load.
Class 3 – Mostly white hari.
These are top branches. And they look the best. I think they can go two more weeks.
Smaller clones are in 10 liters pot. They are producing well. I’ll weight them later. If you can make your own clone, I think it is more practical to grow many Zamaldelica clones in 10 to 15 liters pot. Height would be only around a meter. Flowering was easier once root was bound in a smaller pot. And they would produce the same or better with the same amount of soil. Zamaldelica was not about to use all the benefit of 80 liters pot in my short light hour environment.
So, many small Zamaldelica plants in smaller pot would be better than one big pot. I think the lingo is SOG.
I’ll harvest the smaller clones together on the last batch of the big clone.
Summarizing the weight.
62 grams from clone grown 20 weeks, (9 weeks veg/ 11 weeks) flower, 80 liters pot
20 grams from clone grown 15 weeks, 6 weeks veg / 9 weeks) flower, 10 liters pot
Conclusions:
Zamaldelica is better grown in smaller pot. (any land race Sativa really)
For same amount of fertilizers and other supplies, growing in smaller pots get better result.
Root bound Sativa in small pot flowers faster and more uniform. Cut cycle time by more than a month.
Sativa in small pot is half the height and was much easier to handle and otherwise care for.
Details:
I harvested clone in plant 1 in 2 steps. First at the beginning of the week. Then the rest toward the end of the week.
First harvest from clone number 1 dried easily. Buds were fluffy and this help speed up the drying process. The pistil is orange color. They look over riped. However, smell is of fresh green mango at the start of curing. Hope this batch can keep more mango smell. I don’t like the earth/carrot/nutty smell.
I got 25 grams from the lower branches.
Before second harvest, I nibbed off leaves from clone 1. This way wet trimming work was reduced. And I got 37 gram out of this harvest.
Smaller clones were in 10 liters pot. They are producing well. I have gave one away to a friend. This guy is so stubborn. He sticks by old lore but kept running into one disaster after another. Plant was ready. If he killed her again, he would still get very good smoke. This was meant to encourage him to keep growing.
Next week, I’ll be busy with a sticky and sticky Indica harvest. So, I harvest the remaining small clone a couple weeks early. And I was surprise at the dry weight.
20 grams of almost no effort.
I think the best way to grow Zamaldelica in a sea of green set up is to make your own clone. It would be a real project for conservationist. For me, I found out and then drop it to move on. :D :D :D
Again, thank you for following along the entire journey. Your support keeps me going. And thank you for following this epilogue weeks.
Positive vibe is really needed to give the world a sense of normality. Keep growing and keep it lit guys.
