Green Crack, Water Only grow
Started with a cheap LED, solo cups, heating pad, and tap water
will transplant into a 2x4x6 tent, but I'm hoping to shave 10 days off the tent time so I can pull an extra harvest out of this setup every year
Tent room is cooler than desired (75) and humidity is a little low 40% I covered cups in plastic wrap and hoped the heating pad that serves my tomato and pepper starts every year will help do the job
Three beans dropped in cups packed with Great Lakes, Two more beans in Indicanja
Day 1 falls on 7/11with 4of5 Seeds popping (48-60 hour germination time)
Day 4 edit - one seedling started looking a little leggy, cheap led seems inadequate for these ladies. moved all 4 starts to tent along with one that has yet to pop. Temp is holding steady at 80°
Humidity was at 45% added a pan of water between seedlings and fan, RH now up to 55%
driver may be moved out of the tent soon, humidity is low but I'm hoping it increases in a few days when the smart pots are mixed with water
Day 5 and Seed 5 is just starting to pop, and maybe a double sprout? Also, damn I love this new light and it looks like the seedlings do too. Second sets of true leaves forming and the leggy sprout is holding steady
Day 6 and damn, sprout 5 looks weird, it's popping but I'm not sure what I'm looking at.. it's different, no leaves.
After watering it fell over, I plucked it from the soil and wtf?.. there were two tiny starter leaves under the soil and the Taproot was above. I flipped it over, filled in a little soil.. we'll see what happens. Looking like a 4 plant run instead of 5, which is fine.
Anyway, more importantly — I moved the driver outside of the tent, humidity is still low, and temperature is edging up around 83° despite being lights out for the hottest part of the day. (Maybe July wasn't the best choice of start times — live and learn) Experiencing some leaf curling (claw) most likely from oversaturating the solo cups, but it could also be too much nitrogen in the soil, a little too much wind, or I've really screwed up and these ladies are not happy in the cup. Don't think 10 days in the cups is doable. transplanting to 7gallon smart pots tomorrow — hopefully all that wet soil brings up the humidity a little bit. If not, I'll be better prepared next time with a humidifier
Day 7 and the 5th seedling still not looking good, but showing a little green. two of four have rebounded from overwatering, two still showing the claw, but not as bad as yesterday. I failed to get process pics, but 3of4 transplants went great. Roots were visible in a couple places, but not at the bottom, nor were they overly balled up.
#4 had a chunk of soil split off just before dropping in the hole, that one had recovered from the leaf clawing so if it stunts, I'll know why.
So while the first week hasn't went as planned, but I've learned a lot and hopefully 10% of the way along
