The journey has begun. This is my first attempt ever and the goal is to explore the most of a small set. Don't wish me luck, if possible, share knowledge, wisdom and good vibes!
June 11th - paper towel method starts
June 14th - seed transplanted to soil
June 15th - no changes
June 16th - no changes
June 17th - no changes (nothing? really?)
Noobs being noobs type of week.
Jun 18th - Wtf it's taking too long? Oh, the seed died you jerk! Bad use of the paper towel technique plus room temperature below 21 Celsius.
Yes, curiosity made me dig the pot and realize my first mistake. Shit happens... Let's get over it.
Jun 19th - New seed on the paper towel and now in a heated propagation dome (You drowned the last one, don't burn this one, you noob!)
The dome on a 15/15 min power regime. Pot watered according to manufacture's instructions to get ready for the new seed soon
Jun 20th - This one sprouted beautifully in 24hs (Nice job, you noob!)
Jun 21st - Waaaaaaay better than the first attempt. To the soil little one! (Who are you calling noob now?)
Jun 22nd - No changes yet. Felling anxious to see it growing its first millimeters above the ground. (update: it's coming up, see new picture)
Jun 23rd - Looks like it's going well. 20mm tall after 24hs on soil. Temperature and humidity stable.
Jun 24th - Still growing. Doubled its size in 24hs and at this point it has 40mm.
Starting another week. Keeping an eye on humidity and watering.
Jun 25th - it keeps growing.
Jun 26th to 30th - more leaves showing up, seems to be at a good pace.
Jul 1st - ending this week growing strong.
Starting 4th week but keep in mind I lost the first one due to my noob level of skills. As its growth is now visible and in a constant pace, I'm wondering to use LST in a very near future. The fact is I have the smallest room available and I'm trying a miraculous harvest to make it worth.
Jul 2nd - second pair of leaves are coming up strong and quickly. Amazed to see how it grew over the past week. No signs of lack of water or nutrients.
Jul 3rd - lamp distance adjusted and a bit of watering.
Jul 4th - good pace I guess, more and more leaves coming up, temperature and humidity under control, but still not sure if I'm watering enough. 2 yellow spots are calling my attention but I doubt it's lack of nutrients at this point.
Jul 5th and 6th - growing fast! Stalk is thickering too, many more leaves are joining the party. Watering 1L today to keep the borders moist.
Jul 7th - under control, growing healthy and fast.
Jul 8th - closing one more week with good results and reaching the mark of 10cm. Nice job you noob! For the records, it smells like tomatoes so far.
From 10cm yesterday to 12cm today, a promising week is expected. Focus on watering. Doesn't seem to be asking for fert yet. Let's see how it goes!
Jul 9th - even lower leaves seems to be growing fast. Plant took over the pot. Maintenance watering next days.
Jul 10th to 13th - I had visitors so I watered it 1.5L last Friday so I could keep it away from people in a very low maintenance mode. Temperature and humidity under control, no burned tips or stains. Growing big and healthy. Will be watering a bit next days to maintain soil moist. Still smell like tomatoes haha. Keep on rocking in the free world!
Jul 14th - I was adviced to add some fert. Watered 2L today plus 2ml of Fish Mix. Heeeeey noob, that's for outdoor, did you know? Yes I did. I bought the entire kit during the pandemic and a week later when the store was packing my stuff they run out of indoors. They say it works, so be it. Let's see. 19cm tall today, 8 pairs of branches and more popping up, a very compact plant. The tomato smell is more intense, will install the filter when I find some time.
Jul 15th - what a week ladies and gentlemen. Strong and healthy growth. One or another burn/yellow spot on the older leaves but nothing to worry about. Ending the week 20cm tall, doubling its size.
Next week I will get prepared for topping. The plan is to get as many branches as possible for 16 clones. Suggestions are always welcome!
Starting one more week! I may have took the wrong measure last time as it has 24cm now, can't believe it grew 4cm in the last 24hs. Well, good for me then.
July 16th - getting ready for a busy week. Upcoming topping when it reaches 30cm or when the 8th pair of branches is strong enough.
July 17th to 19th - did nothing but follow its development. It's growing bigger everyday, still strong and healthy. Watered 1L today, no fert added. More space between the branches as it gets taller. Ready for topping. Will wait the visitors to left so I can work on it with the attention this baby deserves.
July 20th - more growth today, waiting for a good moment to do the topping.
July 21st - topping done! 9 pairs of branches, hope it gives me at least 16 good clones. 35cm tall after topping.
July 22nd - ending one more week in a good pace. Watered 1L today with fish mix to boost the growth a bit after the topping. Next watering will be pure water and the other with flowering fert, my consultant says it will be good to the upcoming cloning procedures. Stay tuned! Or not.
Hell yeah! Another week starting today, it will be a calm week inside the grow room but with plenty of activities outside. After topping the plant now it's time to see the branches getting taller. As I'm cloning in 10 days or so, I'm preparing all the procedures for that including LEARNING more about it. Won't be posting daily updates this week, unless my noobness takes me in the opposite direction.
July 23rd - starting to map my branches and that's it. Watered yesterday so the next 5 days are just simple follow up.
July 24th - STOP THE PRESS! I thought it was about time to get the cloning project moving so it's done! 15 clones on the way. Some will die for sure as I'm a greedy noob, but, well, you know, it's a dirty job but someone gotta do it. More details on the pics. Now let's wait and see how much of stupidity I did. Stay tuned.
July 25th - the clones seems to be holding it up strong. Heat dome and extractor on 15/15 but temp around 34ºc and humidity 84%. Vents still closed. A quick spray to fix the situation.
July 26th cloning day #3 - after a quick spray and lift up the led temperature is now stable at 31/32ºC and humidity at 94%. Dome vents still closed, no signs of yellow leaves yet. Branches still strong and up.
July 27th cloning day #4 - temp and humidity stable, a couple of leaves getting yellow, done vents still closed, the experiment seems to be running ok.
July 29th cloning day #6 - noob alert! Some clones are biggerthan it should and some very small, not all will make it. No signs of roots yet but temp and humidity are stable. My wife just want me to get rid of everything and I'm struggling to keep it. Damm! Let's see how far I can go... Sadness define.
One more week. Maybe the last one, we'll see.
July 30th cloning day #7 - some yellow flowers as expected, no visible roots. Two clones taller than it should but I am finding a work around for them. Temp and humidity stable. Some water sprayed to maintain the dome and the root riots moist.
July 31st cloning day #8 - no changes. Switched heated dome to 15/30 power regime to fight high temperature. 2 out of 15 clones definitely won't make it due to my noobness.
August 1st cloning day #9 - and then, tada! 7 out of 15 clones with visible roots. Temp decreased to 31ºc after adjusting the dome, humidity up to 96%. Spraying pure water once a day.
August 2nd cloning day #10 - 13 out of 15 with visible and strong roots. Even the one I thought it was going to die. What a strain ladies and gentlemen. All 15 new pots are ready, air filter installed. Counting the hours to move to the next phase. Go for it you NOOB!
August 3rd cloning day #11 and the last one. 13 out of 15 clones with visible roots, one about to die and the other one without visible roots. All of them were transplanted to soil today. Watered 200ml each with fish mix. 2 more days under 18/6 light regime and then let's go for the flowers!
August 4th - after 24hs in soil 3 seems that won't make it, the others looks like they are stable, but not pretty.
August 5th - ending this week in good shape considering the fact that I'm a noob and all the procedures are new to me. One clone is dead for sure, let's see if the other two will make it as the other 12 looks healthy. I was supposed to put them to flower today but will wait another day or two to be sure the transplantation went OK.
Starting a short week, just some extra days to be sure the roots are strong enough to put them to flower.
August 6th and 7th - some water sprayed on the leaves and a bit on the soil just for maintenance.
August 8th - maybe one more day and I'll be confident to put the to flower.
August 9th - visible constant growth. It's now a matter of leaving it grow a bit taller or not. A bit water spray today and that's it.
August 10th - I decided to put them to flower when they get around 15cm tall and it may take another week or two. I watered them today, 100ml each, pure water. It seems I was able to save 2 out of 3 dying clones, great job you noob! 14 plants in a tiny tent, will it work? Make your bets haha!
August 11th - after a detailed examination I was advised that the clones were good to go. 2 of them with signs of over-fert so I did a flush to wash the soil a bit. Watered 250ml the others. Roots are coming out from the bottom and it may require more constant watering during the next phase.
So I was able to get 14 out of the 15 initial clones. Plants are healthy, in general. I may be a greedy noob but I'm expecting something between 7 to 15 grams on each. 9 more weeks and we'll see the results. Any advice is welcome :)
August 12th - Light schedule switched to 12/12, clones are well watered but due to some over-fert signs I will wait a week to add big bud and bud candy. A new journey has begun. Go for it you noob!
August 13th - lamp distance adjusted. Everything going fine so far.
August 14th - still stretching a bit. Humidity decreasing slowly. No signs of pistils. Top leaves on the overfed plants are a nice green so they should be OK.
August 15th and 16th - more vertical growth as expected. Humidity increased a little bit.
August 17th - such a big growth last days so I had to defoliate a bit and maybe more on the next days. High humidity so I put a dehumidifier on the tent, let's see how it goes.
August 18th - closing this week in good shape. Finished defoliation. Humidity 5% lower and my focus is to reduce to around 55%. I think I saw some pistils but I may be wrong.
A new week of flowering, let's add some nutrients and see how it goes.
August 19th - just regular stretching
August 20th - watered today, 150 ml each, with bud candy and big bud. Humidity is down to 75% and today I opened up a bit more the passive ventilation so I guess it will be under control on the next days.
August 21st - installed a second thermohigrometer on the tent to compare data. High humidity is still hard to fight, but I'll get there.
August 22nd - average humidity at 65%, based on data from 2 higrometers.
August 23rd - still growing strong. Planning another round of defoliation soon. Humidity a bit higher today.
August 24th - defoliation. Identified the pots that need more watering than the others. Some pistils are showing up!
August 25th - closing the second week of flowering in good shape. Clones are healthy and strong, humidity almost under control, pistils growing. Watering tomorrow.
One more week!
August 26th - watering 200ml each with mix of nutrients. Humidity a bit higher and it may increase because I watered today. I'll keep an eye on it.
August 27th - humidity increased 5%. Leaves still growing fast, new defoliation round coming soon. More and more pistils. A few slightly burned tips, overfed them again you noob? Well see...
August 28th - humidity decreased 5%. It seems it's no overfed at all.
August 29th and 30th - humidity is stable around 65% to 75%. Still growing leaves and more and more pistils taking place.
September 1st and 2nd - it seems there's no more vertical growth but leaves are wild. Full of pistils.
September 3rd - starting one more week with defoliation and watering 200ml each. I made a confusion and added bio bloom instead of top max, maybe it's a potassium bomb. Let's see how it goes you noob!
September 4th - increased humidity due to the recent watering, it will get down on the next hours. Almost no signs of overfeeding yet.
September 7th - ending week in good shape but still high humidity, around 70%.
September 8th - starting one more week with defoliation and watering, pure water, 125ml each. Now a quick travel and see you again Monday!
September 13th - all good with the babies! 4 out of 14 are a bit less greener than the others, will review the plan and take some action next days.
September 15th - watered today with ferts and nutrients, last use of big bud. Humidity under control. Buds getting fatter and sticky. Will start watering each 3 days from now on.
September 16th - starting one more week. Evaluating the impacts of the last watering with ferts and nutrients to water again this week.
September 17th - higher humidity and small signs of overfeeding but nothing to worry about.
September 21st - late watering today. I was supposed to do it 2 days ago but the plants were OK, no extreme signs of overfeeding so I added a bunch of them today. The 5 plants that are a bit of less green than the others I added a higher volume as it follows: bio bloom 4ml/L, bud candy 2ml/L, top max 4ml/L, and overdrive 2ml/L. Let's see how it goes and the next watering will be pure water. My only concern so far is that the smeel is still weak, I was hoping to feel a hard punch when I open the tent but that's not happening yet. Maybe a new round of defoliation will come but the leaves are too close from the buds that I'm hesitant to chop them. Any advice is welcome!
September 22nd - New week starting, a small round of defoliation and watering a few plants with pure water.
September 23rd - buds are not as fat as expected maybe because I didn't add enough bio bloom in the previous weeks, but it is what it is, noobness comes around. Pure watering next days.
September 24th - watering today, 150 ml each, pure water. It seems they are thirstier than I thought. Will water again in 3 days with ferts and nutrients but in a small amount as I still see signs of overfeeding. But in general they look nice.
September 29th - starting one more week with power watering, 200ml each. Humidity was stable around 65% but I guess it will increase next days. Overdrive doing its job beautifully, hope I don't overfeed now. Let's see what happens...
September 30th - as predicted, some signs of overfeeding but nothing too serious. Humidity stable. I'll keep an eye on it....
October 2nd - stronger signs of overfeeding but not that serious. Just bought a microscope to control the trichomes. Pure watering pretty soon.
October 4th - pure watering haha, another round of water plus ferts but just 1ml/L of bio bloom + top max and 2ml/L of bud candy + overdrive. From now on just pure watering to flush them very soon. Milky type of trichomes. Harvest is coming!
October 5th - starting the last week, finally!
October 6th - flushed the plants with 6L each. Now waiting for the first signs of amber trichomes to start the harvesting process. Strong smell, enough to make my wife to freak out, haha. At least she didn't kill my plants months ago, I'm very grateful for her. Let's see how it ends...
October 11th - last day of the last week. First spots of amber trichomes, just in time! Lights off. Harvest tomorrow.
Stay tuned for the final results.
Positive vibrations to you all!
What a journey dear farmers, what a journey.
This was my first weed grow ever, so everything was new to me despite having a bit of knowledge and some support from a friend that grows for some years. This comment will summarize my experience and may be useful to others newbies that just like me are looking for a mini-guide on how to grow cannabis for the first time.
Context: I have a small room that could be used to place the tent, far from the eyes of the people that live with me. Also, I was looking to yielding the most possible and to achieve that cloning was the way to go. So, it all starts here.
1. Tent: I had to choose one that fits in my space (55cm wide). The only tent available was the HS40 from Secret Jardin (40cm X 40cm X 120cm).
2. Lights: My budget limited my options and the lack of knowledge made me choose a lamp that is both for vegetation and flowering. So, I went with the Todo Grow Led, 60w. According to the manufacturer, it has enough potency for the area of the tent.
3. Strain: the hardest part was to find a strain that suited my goals: high THC levels and that doesn’t grow too tall because of the tent limitations. Surely, I could have used some LST or similar to work this limitation around but as a newbie, I didn’t have the skills nor the time to learn and apply the technique as the plant grows. In this scenario, I found Barney’s Farm LSD, after reading some reviews I decided to give it a try.
4. Pots and Soil: I started with a 7L pot for the mother plant and as a greedy newbie looking for cloning, I decided to put the clones in juice carton boxes of 1,5L. Why? These boxes had the right measure to place up to 16 “pots” in the tent, with little to none spacing in between. It worked but I could have improved that as watering carton boxes will damage its structure at some point. I cut two corners of their bottoms for draining purposes. For the soil, I went with a light-mix from Canaterra as I had the ferts and nutrients to be added during the process and it’s also recommended for cloning.
5. Ferts and Nutrients: I first bought a starter kit from Bio-Bizz but as Advanced products were affordable, I bought them too, after some weeks. I forgot to use bio-bloom as I should so the buds were not so fat as they could. Nooby type of mistake. If I had everything wrote in a clear schedule type of notes, it would never happen.
6. Cloning setup: the basic – root riot, clonex, and a heated dome.
7. Air Filtering: the basic: an extractor plus a carbon filter.
8. Conditions Control: Two termohygrometers, one on the base of the plant and the other up high so I could have a better reading of the internal conditions. A dehumidifier was needed during the process as well.
9. Extras: A PH test kit to check how my tap water is and then I decided to used filtered water. A microscope to daily check the trichomes. A water pulverizer. A fan for temperature control and/or drying.
Seedling: I used the paper towel method and failed the first time. Too much water. The second attempt was successful. No issues to transplant the seed into the soil.
Vegetation: No bumps at all here. The strain is very resistant and the place where I’m growing had no problems such as extreme temperatures, mold, bugs/flies, or anything that could bring issues to the plant. Topping has no secrets, successfully done (oh, really?). Defoliation was challenging at first because I was afraid of cutting too much, but after the first round, you know what has to be done. Watering (with and without ferts/nutrients) has no mystery, just had to learn how much water was needed in each stage of the plant.
Cloning: Here’s where Youtube videos played an essential role. My biggest mistake was not cutting the branches the same height. The process of preparing the branches, sticking them into the root riot, using clonex, and the proper use of the heated dome went smooth. I initially planned 16 clones but I was able to get 15 from the mother plant and just one died because I made a mistake (held it by the branch and the root riot felt, destroying the roots). For a first-timer, 14 out of 15 is not bad. But if you are cloning, be gentle. And smart.
Flowering: Due to my tight schedule – and a pity written plan – I couldn’t follow a strict watering behavior that caused a bit of overfeeding in some plants. The overall watering (plus the improvised pots) was poorly executed and maybe the final results could have been a bit better. As the written plan was weak, I almost missed the flushing window, so I had to do it all at once. Regarding the trichomes, I wasn’t looking for a dominant couch locking effect, so I harvested the plants on the very first signs of amber trichomes to be sure they were mature enough. The accidental samples I had (when I missed the spot during defoliation) were good enough to me so I was looking for milky/cloudy trichomes.
Harvesting: Take your time. Really. A pleasant but time-consuming activity.
Drying/Curing: I’m still in the process of drying the buds as I write and post this here. It will be 7 do 10 days drying and I’m trying my best to keep humidity below 60%. Curing will be another process but I know I’m going to smoke my buds before they are cured (partially/totally).
Some minor considerations…
Overfeeding: feeding a plant can be a daunting task. As I was using good soil, I didn’t have issues with underfeeding. Stick with the manufacturer's recommendation for a start and adjust it according to the results on your plants. When in doubt, less is more: use less than the recommended initially.
Flushing: When I overfed my clones I had to flush two of them. Moving the plants from the tent room to the toilet was a nightmare. Smell all over the house, angry wife, etc, etc. If I was using a proper pot
instead of a juice box, I could have managed to flush the plants in the tent room.
Tools: Invest in them even on the minor ones such as one syringe for each fert/nutrient so you don’t mix or waste them. Don’t get a microscope that attaches to your phone by a clip, it was terrible to focus and I had to take 30 pictures to get a good one so I could analyze the trichomes. Bud cutters, sharp scissors, latex gloves, alcohol for cleaning.
Myself: I smoke tobacco for over 20 years so I don’t have too much taste anymore so please just disregard my evaluation about how does the plant taste and especially because I tried a sample before harvesting, not properly dried and cured. One other thing is that my nose doesn’t work that well so I took some time to realize how much smell was coming from the plants.
Final Thoughts
Growing is funny. Growing is educational. Growing is a fantastic experience. Growing is kicking dealers’ asses. I wish I had started years ago and now I wish to have more space to keep growing non-stopping many different strains and without the domestic problems, I had (almost had my plants destroyed haha). Thanks to the few people who liked my diary and sent me supportive messages. A special thanks to “El Papito” who advised me from the beginning and that unfortunately is far away from me and won’t be able to try my buds (don't worry, I'll smoke your share).
Positive vibrations and happy growing everyone!
