Spyder7answered grow question 5 years ago I use Pro-mix premium potting soil, which has some perlite in it, though they don't tell you the exact ratio and I found the soil's drainage last grow left something to be desired; I had no issues related to it, but to avoid stagnant water only being slowly absorbed by the soil, watering/feeding could take as long as 15 mins in the last weeks.
The same company also makes pure perlite, and for this grow I bought a bag to mix in some extra. I didn't need to add much, but they don't tell you how much is in the premium potting soil and you can't really estimate the ratio when its already mixed in. But I added an extra 15% of perlite to 85% of their potting soil with an unknown amount in it already, and after mixing it all up, watered it just as I would water a plant in a 3 gallon: I put 1.5L of water into it and it absorbed it like quicksand, with a small amount running off at the end.
Their recommended ratio, if adding it to soil with none present, is 1 part perlite to one part soil for an outdoor grow, and 3 parts of soil to one part perlite if growing indoors. I used less since their potting soil has some in it, and just adding in an extra 15% of raw perlite greatly improved drainage.
