ppm control

can you mix distilled water with regular water to lower ppm? From what I understand from a web search To raise the values of the ppm I need to add more nutrients And to lower the value The solution is a reverse osmosis filter Just trying to think of a cheaper solution

Yes! you most definitely can! PPM (parts per million) indicates the solution's electrical conductivity (EC) or the amount of salts and minerals are in the solution. By adding distilled water to nutrient rich solution the electrical conductivity will decrease because distilled water has no nutrients in it! an action called osmosis happens and to simplify it, the same amount of minerals and salts equally disperse in a larger volume when distilled water is added which reduces their conductivity and thus salinity (PPM/EC/TDS). More nutrients = More salts and minerals = Higher salinity Most places have adequate tap water to use for irrigation but if it is an issue for you a cheap alternative to a reverse osmosis setup is to collect the condensed water from air conditioners! it may take awhile but it will supply you with cheap distilled water with a little effort. Hope this helps! Good luck and happy growing :)
