Deep watering to run off, (water coming out of the bottom of the pots), then waiting until the top 1-2 inches of the soil is dry again before re-watering is much better than giving smaller amounts of water every day. You need for the soil to be moist all the way through and to encourage the roots to grow down deep and not stay near the surface, which happens when you water shallow and too often. A constantly moist soil surface can also lead to fungal problems too, as well as inviting fungal gnats.
Watering to run off also helps to prevent nutrient salts from the fertilizers from building up to toxic levels in the substrate and eventually burning the plants.
It may take 1-5 days for the top 1-2 inches (2-5cms) to dry out again and for your plants to be ready for their next deep watering.
A finger stuck into the soil is the most reliable and cheapest "water meter" you will ever find.
Hope this helps, Organoman.
